High-performance transparent and stretchable all-solid supercapacitors based on highly aligned carbon nanotube sheets.

ABSTRACT: By using highly aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets of excellent optical transmittance and mechanical stretchability as both the current collector and active electrode, high-performance transparent and stretchable all-solid supercapacitors with a good stability were developed. A transmittance up to 75% at the wavelength of 550 nm was achieved for a supercapacitor made from a cross-over assembly of two single-layer CNT sheets. The transparent supercapacitor has a specific capacitance of 7.3 F g(-1) and can be biaxially stretched up to 30% strain without any obvious change in electrochemical performance even over hundreds stretching cycles.

Stretchable, weavable coiled carbon nanotube/MnO2/polymer fiber solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Fiber and yarn supercapacitors that are elastomerically deformable without performance loss are sought for such applications as power sources for wearable electronics, micro-devices, and implantable medical devices. Previously reported yarn and fiber supercapacitors are expensive to fabricate, difficult to upscale, or non-stretchable, which limits possible use. The elastomeric electrodes of the present solid-state supercapacitors are made by using giant inserted twist to coil a nylon sewing thread that is helically wrapped with a carbon nanotube sheet, and then electrochemically depositing pseudocapacitive MnO2 nanofibers. These solid-state supercapacitors decrease capacitance by less than 15% when reversibly stretched by 150% in the fiber direction, and largely retain capacitance while being cyclically stretched during charge and discharge. The maximum linear and areal capacitances (based on active materials) and areal energy storage and power densities (based on overall supercapacitor dimensions) are high (5.4 mF/cm, 40.9 mF/cm(2), 2.6 ?Wh/cm(2) and 66.9 ?W/cm(2), respectively), despite the engineered superelasticity of the fiber supercapacitor. Retention of supercapacitor performance during large strain (50%) elastic deformation is demonstrated for supercapacitors incorporated into the wristband of a glove.

Electrochemically Oxidized Carbon Nanotube Sheets for High-Performance and Flexible-Film Supercapacitors.

Project description:The development of flexible, high-performance supercapacitors has been a focal point in energy storage research. While carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets offer promising mechanical and electrical properties, their low electrical double-layer capacitance significantly limits their practicability. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to address this challenge via the electrochemical oxidation treatment of CNT sheets stacked on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate. This introduces oxygen-containing functional groups onto the CNT surface, thereby dramatically enhancing the pseudocapacitive effect and improving ion adsorption. Consequently, using the material in a two-electrode system increased the capacitance by 54 times compared to pristine CNT. The results of electrochemical performance characterization, including cyclic voltammograms, galvanostatic charge/discharge curves, and capacitance retention testing data, confirm the efficacy of the electrochemical oxidation approach. Furthermore, the mechanical flexibility of the electrochemically wetted CNT sheets was validated through resistance and discharge retention testing under repetitive bending (98% capacitance retention after 1000 bending cycles). The results demonstrate that electrochemically wetted CNT sheets retain their intrinsic mechanical and electrical properties while significantly enhancing the electrochemical performance (0.59 mF/cm2 or 97.8 F/g). This work represents a significant advancement in the development of flexible, high-performance supercapacitors with potential applicability to wearable electronics, flexible displays, and next-generation energy storage solutions.

Stretchable Transparent Conductive Films from Long Carbon Nanotube Metals.

Project description:Flexible transparent conductors are an enabling component for large-area flexible displays, wearable electronics, and implantable medical sensors that can wrap around and move with the body. However, conventional conductive materials decay quickly under tensile strain, posing a significant hurdle for functional flexible devices. Here, we show that high electrical conductivity, mechanical stretchability, and optical transparency can be simultaneously attained by compositing long metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes with a polydimethylsiloxane substrate. When stretched to 100% tensile strain, thin films incorporating these long nanotubes (≈3.2 µm on average) achieve a record high conductivity of 3316 S cm-1 at 100% tensile strain and 85% optical transmittance, which is 194 times higher than that of short nanotube controls (≈0.8 µm on average). Moreover, the high conductivity can withstand more than 1000 repeated stretch-release cycles (switching between 100% and 0% strain) with a retention approaching 96%, whereas the short nanotube controls exhibit only 10%. Mechanistic studies reveal that long tubes can bridge the microscale gaps generated during stretching, thereby maintaining high electrical conductivity. When mounted on human joints, this elastic transparent conductor can accommodate large motions to provide stable, high current output. These results point to transparent conductors capable of attaining high electrical conductivity and optical transmittance under mechanical strain to allow large shape changes that may take place in the operation and use of flexible electronics.

Highly flexible and free-standing carbon nanotube/hollow carbon nanocage hybrid films for high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as promising electrode materials for energy storage devices, especially flexible electronics owing to their excellent electrical, physicochemical and mechanical properties. However, the severe aggregation between CNTs significantly reduces the electrochemically active surface areas and thus degrades the electrochemical properties. In this study, we demonstrate a facile layer-by-layer strategy toward preparing a CNT/hollow carbon nanocage (HCNC) hybrid film. Through electrochemically removing the impurities in CNT films and optimizing the concentrations of HCNC, the hybrid film exhibits a high specific capacitance of 183.7 F g-1 at 10 mV s-1 and good cycling stability of 85% retention after 5000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Our study provides potential scale-up synthesis of free-standing CNT electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Composite Structural Supercapacitors: High-Performance Carbon Nanotube Supercapacitors through Ionic Liquid Localisation.

Project description:Composite structural supercapacitors (SSC) are an attractive technology for aerospace vehicles; however, maintaining strength whilst adding energy storage to composite structures has been difficult. Here, SSCs were manufactured using aerospace-grade composite materials and CNT mat electrodes. A new design methodology was explored where the supercapacitor electrolyte was localised within the composite structure, achieving good electrochemical performance within the active region, whilst maintaining excellent mechanical performance elsewhere. The morphologies of these localised SSC designs were characterised with synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy and synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography and could be directly correlated with both electrochemical and mechanical performance. One configuration used an ionogel with an ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte, which assisted localisation and achieved 2640 mW h kg-1 at 8.37 W kg-1 with a corresponding short beam shear (SBS) strength of 71.5 MPa in the active area. A separate configuration with only IL electrolyte achieved 758 mW h kg-1 at 7.87 W kg-1 with SBS strength of 106 MPa in the active area. Both configurations provide a combined energy and strength superior to results previously reported in the literature for composite SSCs.

Super-stretchable, transparent carbon nanotube-based capacitive strain sensors for human motion detection.

Project description:Realization of advanced bio-interactive electronic devices requires mechanically compliant sensors with the ability to detect extremely large strain. Here, we design a new multifunctional carbon nanotube (CNT) based capacitive strain sensors which can detect strains up to 300% with excellent durability even after thousands of cycles. The CNT-based strain gauge devices exhibit deterministic and linear capacitive response throughout the whole strain range with a gauge factor very close to the predicted value (strictly 1), representing the highest sensitivity value. The strain tests reveal the presented strain gauge with excellent dynamic sensing ability without overshoot or relaxation, and ultrafast response at sub-second scale. Coupling these superior sensing capabilities to the high transparency, physical robustness and flexibility, we believe the designed stretchable multifunctional CNT-based strain gauge may have various potential applications in human friendly and wearable smart electronics, subsequently demonstrated by our prototypical data glove and respiration monitor.

Polypyrrole/Carbon Nanotube Freestanding Electrode with Excellent Electrochemical Properties for High-Performance All-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this study, a facile and environmentally friendly method was used to prepare a freestanding supercapacitor electrode displaying excellent areal capacitance and good cycle life performance. First, we prepared polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPyNP) through a simple in situ chemical polymerization using the plant-derived material curcumin as a bioavailable template. A PPyNP/f-CNT freestanding composite electrode of high mass loading (ca. 14 mg cm-2) was prepared after blending the mixtures of the prepared PPyNP and functionalized CNTs (f-CNTs). The performance of the as-prepared material as a supercapacitor electrode was evaluated in a three-electrode setup using aqueous 1 M H2SO4 as the electrolyte. The PPyNP/f-CNT freestanding composite electrode exhibited a high areal capacitance of 4585 mF cm-2 and a corresponding volumetric capacitance of 176.35 F cm-3 at a current density of 2 mA cm-2. A symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor assembled using two identical pieces of PPyNP/f-CNT composite electrodes exhibited maximum areal energy and power density of 129.24 μW h cm-2 and 12.5 mW cm-2, respectively. Besides, this supercapacitor device exhibited good cycle life performance, with 79.03% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. These results suggest practical applications for these PPyNP/f-CNT freestanding composite electrode-based symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitors.

High-performance symmetric supercapacitors based on carbon nanotube/graphite nanofiber nanocomposites.

Project description:This work reports the nanocomposites of graphitic nanofibers (GNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the electrode material for supercapacitors. The hybrid CNTs/GNFs was prepared via a synthesis route that involved catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The structure and morphology of CNTs/GNFs can be precisely controlled by adjusting the flow rates of reactant gases. The nest shape entanglement of CNTs and GNFs which could not only have high conductivity to facilitate ion transmission, but could also increase surface area for more electrolyte ions access. When assembled in a symmetric two-electrode system, the CNTs/GNFs-based supercapacitor showed a very good cycling stability of 96% after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, CNTs/GNFs-based symmetric device can deliver a maximum specific energy of 72.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 686.0 W kg-1. The high performance of the hybrid performance can be attributed to the wheat like GNFs which provide sufficient accessible sites for charge storage, and the CNTs skeleton which provide channels for charge transport.

Stretchable Transparent Light-Emitting Diodes Based on InGaN/GaN Quantum Well Microwires and Carbon Nanotube Films.

Project description:We propose and demonstrate both flexible and stretchable blue light-emitting diodes based on core/shell InGaN/GaN quantum well microwires embedded in polydimethylsiloxane membranes with strain-insensitive transparent electrodes involving single-walled carbon nanotubes. InGaN/GaN core-shell microwires were grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, encapsulated into a polydimethylsiloxane film, and then released from the growth substrate. The fabricated free-standing membrane of light-emitting diodes with contacts of single-walled carbon nanotube films can stand up to 20% stretching while maintaining efficient operation. Membrane-based LEDs show less than 15% degradation of electroluminescence intensity after 20 cycles of stretching thus opening an avenue for highly deformable inorganic devices.
