We recently reported that neural stem cells (NSCs) become senescent and commit to astrocytic differentiation upon X-ray irradiation. Surprisingly, under self-renewing culture conditions, some of these senescent cells undergo p53-independent apoptosis, which can be suppressed by caspase inhibition and BCL2 overexpression.
