ABSTRACT: Advanced organocatalytic synthesis methods were employed to prepare linear poly(carbonate)s with control over functional group incorporation and molecular weight. Pendant allyl or epoxide groups served as reaction partners in thiol-ene click or epoxide-amine reactions with ethylene oxide-containing crosslinking groups to form a panel of six novel poly(carbonate) nanosponges with crosslinking densities ranging from 5%, 10% and 20% via an intermolecular chain-crosslinking approach.

Structure-Property Relationships of Poly(ethylene carbonate) and Poly(propylene carbonate).

Project description:Conformational characteristics of poly(ethylene carbonate) (PEC) and poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) have been revealed via molecular orbital (MO) calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on model compounds with the same bond sequences as those of the polycarbonates. Bond conformations derived from the MO calculations on the models were in exact agreement with those from the NMR experiments. Both PEC and PPC were indicated to adopt distorted conformations including a number of gauche bonds and cover themselves with negative charges, thus failing to form a regular packing and remaining amorphous. The MO data were applied to the refined rotational isomeric state (RIS) calculations to yield configurational properties such as the characteristic ratio, its temperature coefficient, the configurational entropy, and average geometrical parameters of unperturbed PEC and PPC chains. In the RIS calculations on PPC, the regio- and stereosequences were generated according to the Bernoulli trial or Markov stochastic process. In consequence, it was shown that the configurational properties of PPC do not depend significantly on its regio- and stereoregularities. The internal energy contribution to rubberlike chain elasticity, calculated from the temperature coefficient of the characteristic ratio, has indicated the possibility that PEC and PPC will behave as elastomers. The practical applications and potential utilizations of the polycarbonates are discussed on the basis of the conformational characteristics and configurational properties.

Calcium Carbonate Skeletal Material Is Synthesized via Phase Transition of the Calcium Carbonate Cartilaginous Material.

Project description:The formation mechanism of calcium carbonate (CC) skeletal tissues in biomineralization has remained poorly understood for a long time. Here, we propose an artificial CC biomineralization system equivalent to the natural one in terms of the primary physicochemical mechanism. Our system is constructed of a polymer gel and a CC solution unsaturated by a dissociated anionic polymer. The gel network consists of proton donor and proton acceptor polymers, which are analogues of polymers in the natural biomineralization system and have affinity for each other through hydrogen bonding interaction. Artificial biomineralization takes place within the polymer gel to produce a monolithic composite of the network and CC, whose powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicates calcite or calcite/vaterite. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy observation of the composite during the mineralization process revealed a two-phase structure (network/CC solid solution phase and CC hypercomplex gel phase). As artificial biomineralization proceeds, the solid phase grows in size at the cost of the gel phase as if the latter is substituted with the former, until the solid phase occupies the whole depth of the composite. These results suggest that the hypercomplex gel is the precursor of the resultant network/CC solid solution, and its discontinuous change is a phase transition to the solid solution. Despite minute differences in higher-order structures between our model system and the natural system, the fundamental structure of CC skeletal tissues in the latter can be interpreted as a network/CC solid solution, whereas that of CC cartilaginous tissues as a CC hypercomplex gel. Then, it can be deduced that, in biomineralization, the CC skeletal tissue is in principle formed via a phase transition of the CC cartilaginous tissue.

Polymer Networks Synthesized from Poly(Sorbitol Adipate) and Functionalized Poly(Ethylene Glycol).

Project description:Polymer networks were prepared by Steglich esterification using poly(sorbitol adipate) (PSA) and poly(sorbitol adipate)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) mono methyl ether (PSA-g-mPEG12) copolymer. Utilizing multi-hydroxyl functionalities of PSA, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was first grafted onto a PSA backbone. Then the cross-linking of PSA or PSA-g-mPEG12 was carried out with disuccinyl PEG of different molar masses (Suc-PEGn-Suc). Polymers were characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The degree of swelling of networks was investigated through water (D2O) uptake studies, while for detailed examination of their structural dynamics, networks were studied using 13C magic angle spinning NMR (13C MAS NMR) spectroscopy, 1H double quantum NMR (1H DQ NMR) spectroscopy, and 1H pulsed field gradient NMR (1H PFG NMR) spectroscopy. These solid state NMR results revealed that the networks were composed of a two component structure, having different dipolar coupling constants. The diffusion of solvent molecules depended on the degree of swelling that was imparted to the network by the varying chain length of the PEG based cross-linking agent.

Poly(trimethylene carbonate-co-ε-caprolactone) promotes axonal growth.

Project description:Mammalian central nervous system (CNS) neurons do not regenerate after injury due to the inhibitory environment formed by the glial scar, largely constituted by myelin debris. The use of biomaterials to bridge the lesion area and the creation of an environment favoring axonal regeneration is an appealing approach, currently under investigation. This work aimed at assessing the suitability of three candidate polymers - poly(ε-caprolactone), poly(trimethylene carbonate-co-ε-caprolactone) (P(TMC-CL)) (11∶89 mol%) and poly(trimethylene carbonate) - with the final goal of using these materials in the development of conduits to promote spinal cord regeneration. Poly(L-lysine) (PLL) coated polymeric films were tested for neuronal cell adhesion and neurite outgrowth. At similar PLL film area coverage conditions, neuronal polarization and axonal elongation was significantly higher on P(TMC-CL) films. Furthermore, cortical neurons cultured on P(TMC-CL) were able to extend neurites even when seeded onto myelin. This effect was found to be mediated by the glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) signaling pathway with impact on the collapsin response mediator protein 4 (CRMP4), suggesting that besides surface topography, nanomechanical properties were implicated in this process. The obtained results indicate P(TMC-CL) as a promising material for CNS regenerative applications as it promotes axonal growth, overcoming myelin inhibition.

Cave bacteria-induced amorphous calcium carbonate formation.

Project description:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a precursor of crystalline calcium carbonates that plays a key role in biomineralization and polymorph evolution. Here, we show that several bacterial strains isolated from a Hungarian cave produce ACC and their extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) shields ACC from crystallization. The findings demonstrate that bacteria-produced ACC forms in water-rich environment at room temperature and is stable for at least half year, which is in contrast to laboratory-produced ACC that needs to be stored in a desiccator and kept below 10 °C for avoiding crystallization. The ACC-shielding EPS consists of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. In particular, we identified large amount of long-chain fatty acid components. We suggest that ACC could be enclosed in a micella-like formula within the EPS that inhibits water infiltration. As the bacterial cells lyse, the covering protective layer disintegrates, water penetrates and the unprotected ACC grains crystallize to calcite. Our study indicates that bacteria are capable of producing ACC, and we estimate its quantity in comparison to calcite presumably varies up to 20% depending on the age of the colony. Since diverse bacterial communities colonize the surface of cave sediments in temperate zone, we presume that ACC is common in these caves and its occurrence is directly linked to bacterial activity and influences the geochemical signals recorded in speleothems.

Formation and Structure of Calcium Carbonate Thin Films and Nanofibers Precipitated in the Presence of Poly(Allylamine Hydrochloride) and Magnesium Ions.

Project description:That the cationic polyelectrolyte poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) exerts a significant influence on CaCO3 precipitation challenges the idea that only anionic additives have this effect. Here, we show that in common with anionic polyelectrolytes such as poly(aspartic acid), PAH supports the growth of calcite thin films and abundant nanofibers. While investigating the formation of these structures, we also perform the first detailed structural analysis of the nanofibers by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction. The nanofibers are shown to be principally single crystal, with isolated domains of polycrystallinity, and the single crystal structure is even preserved in regions where the nanofibers dramatically change direction. The formation mechanism of the fibers, which are often hundreds of micrometers long, has been the subject of intense speculation. Our results suggest that they form by aggregation of amorphous particles, which are incorporated into the fibers uniquely at their tips, before crystallizing. Extrusion of polymer during crystallization may inhibit particle addition at the fiber walls and result in local variations in the fiber nanostructure. Finally, we investigate the influence of Mg2+ on CaCO3 precipitation in the presence of PAH, which gives thinner and smoother films, together with fibers with more polycrystalline, granular structures.

Study of Preparation and Properties of Stereoregular Poly(cyclohexenylene carbonate).

Project description:Fixing carbon dioxide as a polymer material is an effective and environmentally beneficial approach for reducing the harm of CO2 greenhouse gas. In this paper, carbon dioxide and cyclohexene oxide were used as co-monomers, and a chiral binuclear cobalt complex with a biphenyl linker was employed as the catalyst to successfully prepare a poly(cyclohexenylene carbonate) with high stereoregularity. The influence of catalyst structure, CO2 pressure, and operating temperature on the copolymerization rate and polymer structure were systematically investigated. Optimal catalyst structure and operating conditions were determined, resulting in an excellent poly(cyclohexenylene carbonate) with a stereoregularity as high as 93.5%. Performance testing revealed that the polyester had a molecular weight of approximately 20 kg/mol, a glass transition temperature of 129.7 °C, an onset decomposition temperature of 290 °C, and a tensile strength of 42.8 MPa. These results demonstrate high thermal stability and mechanical strength, indicating the potential for expanding the applications of aliphatic polycarbonate materials.

Poly(carbonate-amide)s Derived from Bio-Based Resources: Poly(ferulic acid-<i>co</i>-tyrosine).

Project description:Ferulic acid (FA), a bio-based resource found in fruits and vegetables, was coupled with a hydroxyl-amino acid to generate a new class of monomers to afford poly(carbonate-amide)s with potential to degrade into natural products. l-Serine was first selected as the hydroxyl-amino partner for FA, from which the activated p-nitrophenyl carbonate monomer was synthesized. Unfortunately, polymerizations were unsuccessful, and the elimination product was systematically obtained. To avoid elimination, we revised our strategy and used l-tyrosine ethyl ester, which lacks an acidic proton on the ? position of the ethyl ester. Four new monomers were synthesized and converted into the corresponding poly(carbonate-amide)s with specific regioselectivities. The polymers were fully characterized through thermal and spectroscopic analyses. Preliminary fluorescent studies revealed interesting photophysical properties for the monomers and their corresponding poly(carbonate-amide)s, beyond the fluorescence characteristics of l-tyrosine and FA, making these materials potentially viable for sensing and/or imaging applications, in addition to their attractiveness as engineering materials derived from renewable resources.

Low-Dimensional Network Formation in Molten Sodium Carbonate.

Project description:Molten carbonates are highly inviscid liquids characterized by low melting points and high solubility of rare earth elements and volatile molecules. An understanding of the structure and related properties of these intriguing liquids has been limited to date. We report the results of a study of molten sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) which combines high energy X-ray diffraction, containerless techniques and computer simulation to provide insight into the liquid structure. Total structure factors (F(x)(Q)) are collected on the laser-heated carbonate spheres suspended in flowing gases of varying composition in an aerodynamic levitation furnace. The respective partial structure factor contributions to F(x)(Q) are obtained by performing molecular dynamics simulations treating the carbonate anions as flexible entities. The carbonate liquid structure is found to be heavily temperature-dependent. At low temperatures a low-dimensional carbonate chain network forms, at T = 1100 K for example ~55% of the C atoms form part of a chain. The mean chain lengths decrease as temperature is increased and as the chains become shorter the rotation of the carbonate anions becomes more rapid enhancing the diffusion of Na(+) ions.
