Evolution: why all plumes and jets evolve to round cross sections.

ABSTRACT: Turbulent curtains of smoke rise initially as flat plumes and, above a certain height, they become round plumes. The same evolution of cross-sectional shape is exhibited by jets issuing from flat nozzles. Here we predict based on principle that all such flows should evolve their cross-sectional shapes from flat to round (and not the other way) at a critical distance downstream, which is predictable. The principle is that the prevailing flow architecture provides greater access to the flow of momentum from the moving core (plume, jet) to the still surroundings. For turbulent plumes and jets, the transition distance scales with the long dimensions (L) of the two-dimensional (flat) heat sources and nozzles that drive them. For laminar jets, the transition distance scales with L Re, where Re is the Reynolds number based on nozzle velocity and the smaller dimension of the nozzle cross section. These predictions are confirmed by full numerical experiments of the three-dimensional flow fields of turbulent and laminar jets covering the Re range 10-10(4).

Measurements of top-quark pair differential cross-sections in the lepton+jets channel in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] using the ATLAS detector.

Project description:Measurements of normalized differential cross-sections of top-quark pair production are presented as a function of the top-quark, [Formula: see text] system and event-level kinematic observables in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text]. The observables have been chosen to emphasize the [Formula: see text] production process and to be sensitive to effects of initial- and final-state radiation, to the different parton distribution functions, and to non-resonant processes and higher-order corrections. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text], recorded in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in the lepton+jets channel, requiring exactly one charged lepton and at least four jets with at least two of the jets tagged as originating from a b-quark. The measured spectra are corrected for detector effects and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations. The results are in fair agreement with the predictions over a wide kinematic range. Nevertheless, most generators predict a harder top-quark transverse momentum distribution at high values than what is observed in the data. Predictions beyond NLO accuracy improve the agreement with data at high top-quark transverse momenta. Using the current settings and parton distribution functions, the rapidity distributions are not well modelled by any generator under consideration. However, the level of agreement is improved when more recent sets of parton distribution functions are used.

Machine Learning for Absorption Cross Sections.

Project description:We present a machine learning (ML) method to accelerate the nuclear ensemble approach (NEA) for computing absorption cross sections. ML-NEA is used to calculate cross sections on vast ensembles of nuclear geometries to reduce the error due to insufficient statistical sampling. The electronic properties-excitation energies and oscillator strengths-are calculated with a reference electronic structure method only for a relatively few points in the ensemble. The KREG model (kernel-ridge-regression-based ML combined with the RE descriptor) as implemented in MLatom is used to predict these properties for the remaining tens of thousands of points in the ensemble without incurring much of additional computational cost. We demonstrate for two examples, benzene and a 9-dicyanomethylene derivative of acridine, that ML-NEA can produce statistically converged cross sections even for very challenging cases and even with as few as several hundreds of training points.

Evolthon: A community endeavor to evolve lab evolution.

Project description:In experimental evolution, scientists evolve organisms in the lab, typically by challenging them to new environmental conditions. How best to evolve a desired trait? Should the challenge be applied abruptly, gradually, periodically, sporadically? Should one apply chemical mutagenesis, and do strains with high innate mutation rate evolve faster? What are ideal population sizes of evolving populations? There are endless strategies, beyond those that can be exposed by individual labs. We therefore arranged a community challenge, Evolthon, in which students and scientists from different labs were asked to evolve Escherichia coli or Saccharomyces cerevisiae for an abiotic stress-low temperature. About 30 participants from around the world explored diverse environmental and genetic regimes of evolution. After a period of evolution in each lab, all strains of each species were competed with one another. In yeast, the most successful strategies were those that used mating, underscoring the importance of sex in evolution. In bacteria, the fittest strain used a strategy based on exploration of different mutation rates. Different strategies displayed variable levels of performance and stability across additional challenges and conditions. This study therefore uncovers principles of effective experimental evolutionary regimens and might prove useful also for biotechnological developments of new strains and for understanding natural strategies in evolutionary arms races between species. Evolthon constitutes a model for community-based scientific exploration that encourages creativity and cooperation.

Neuroanatomy Learning: Augmented Reality vs. Cross-Sections.

Project description:Neuroanatomy education is a challenging field which could benefit from modern innovations, such as augmented reality (AR) applications. This study investigates the differences on test scores, cognitive load, and motivation after neuroanatomy learning using AR applications or using cross-sections of the brain. Prior to two practical assignments, a pretest (extended matching questions, double-choice questions and a test on cross-sectional anatomy) and a mental rotation test (MRT) were completed. Sex and MRT scores were used to stratify students over the two groups. The two practical assignments were designed to study (1) general brain anatomy and (2) subcortical structures. Subsequently, participants completed a posttest similar to the pretest and a motivational questionnaire. Finally, a focus group interview was conducted to appraise participants' perceptions. Medical and biomedical students (n = 31); 19 males (61.3%) and 12 females (38.7%), mean age 19.2 ± 1.7 years participated in this experiment. Students who worked with cross-sections (n = 16) showed significantly more improvement on test scores than students who worked with GreyMapp-AR (P = 0.035) (n = 15). Further analysis showed that this difference was primarily caused by significant improvement on the cross-sectional questions. Students in the cross-section group, moreover, experienced a significantly higher germane (P = 0.009) and extraneous cognitive load (P = 0.016) than students in the GreyMapp-AR group. No significant differences were found in motivational scores. To conclude, this study suggests that AR applications can play a role in future anatomy education as an add-on educational tool, especially in learning three-dimensional relations of anatomical structures.

Partial Ionization Cross Sections of Organic Molecules

Project description:Partial ionization cross sections are the absolute yields of specific ions from an electron-molecule collision. They are necessary for modeling plasmas and for determining the sensitivity of mass spectrometers, among other applications. One mass-spectrometric application is estimating the abundance of organic compounds on Mars, as sampled by the rover Curiosity. This is a report of semitheoretical data obtained for a collection of organic molecules identified as possible biomarkers in this exotic context.

Role of charge accumulation in guided streamer evolution in helium DBD plasma jets.

Project description:Experimental data are presented on the evolution of a helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet driven by a tailored voltage waveform generated as bunches of voltage pulses consisting of a superposition of [Formula: see text] kHz bipolar square pulses and [Formula: see text] kHz oscillations. The characteristics of directed ionization waves (guided streamers) are compared for bunches with different first pulse polarities and different bunch duty cycles. The longest and brightest streamers are achieved at the voltage bunch with the first negative pulse and a minimum duty cycle. The dynamics of streamers at the voltage bunch with the first positive pulse are characterized by the shortest length and a lower brightness. The plasma jet length can be smoothly changed by varying the number of pulses in the bunch and the polarity of the first pulse. It is thus possible to precisely localize the region of a strong field in space by combining the parameters of the applied voltage (the duty cycle and polarity of the first pulse of a bunch) with a stepwise propagation mode of a guided streamer.

Quantification of organic aerosol and brown carbon evolution in fresh wildfire plumes.

Project description:The evolution of organic aerosol (OA) and brown carbon (BrC) in wildfire plumes, including the relative contributions of primary versus secondary sources, has been uncertain in part because of limited knowledge of the precursor emissions and the chemical environment of smoke plumes. We made airborne measurements of a suite of reactive trace gases, particle composition, and optical properties in fresh western US wildfire smoke in July through August 2018. We use these observations to quantify primary versus secondary sources of biomass-burning OA (BBPOA versus BBSOA) and BrC in wildfire plumes. When a daytime wildfire plume dilutes by a factor of 5 to 10, we estimate that up to one-third of the primary OA has evaporated and subsequently reacted to form BBSOA with near unit yield. The reactions of measured BBSOA precursors contribute only 13 ± 3% of the total BBSOA source, with evaporated BBPOA comprising the rest. We find that oxidation of phenolic compounds contributes the majority of BBSOA from emitted vapors. The corresponding particulate nitrophenolic compounds are estimated to explain 29 ± 15% of average BrC light absorption at 405 nm (BrC Abs405) measured in the first few hours of plume evolution, despite accounting for just 4 ± 2% of average OA mass. These measurements provide quantitative constraints on the role of dilution-driven evaporation of OA and subsequent radical-driven oxidation on the fate of biomass-burning OA and BrC in daytime wildfire plumes and point to the need to understand how processing of nighttime emissions differs.

Conserved Noncoding Elements Evolve Around the Same Genes Throughout Metazoan Evolution.

Project description:Conserved noncoding elements (CNEs) are DNA sequences located outside of protein-coding genes that can remain under purifying selection for up to hundreds of millions of years. Studies in vertebrate genomes have revealed that most CNEs carry out regulatory functions. Notably, many of them are enhancers that control the expression of homeodomain transcription factors and other genes that play crucial roles in embryonic development. To further our knowledge of CNEs in other parts of the animal tree, we conducted a large-scale characterization of CNEs in more than 50 genomes from three of the main branches of the metazoan tree: Cnidaria, Mollusca, and Arthropoda. We identified hundreds of thousands of CNEs and reconstructed the temporal dynamics of their appearance in each lineage, as well as determining their spatial distribution across genomes. We show that CNEs evolve repeatedly around the same genes across the Metazoa, including around homeodomain genes and other transcription factors; they also evolve repeatedly around genes involved in neural development. We also show that transposons are a major source of CNEs, confirming previous observations from vertebrates and suggesting that they have played a major role in wiring developmental gene regulatory mechanisms since the dawn of animal evolution.

The wind-driven formation of cross-shelf sediment plumes in a large lake.

Project description:Wind-driven turbidity plumes frequently occur in the western arm of Lake Superior and may represent a significant cross shelf transport mechanism for sediment, nutrient and biota. Here we characterize a plume that formed in late April 2016 using observations from in situ sensors and remote sensing imagery, and estimate the volume of cross shelf transport using both the observations and an idealized analytical model of plume formation. The steady-state, barotropic model is used to determine a relationship between the intensity and duration of a wind event and the volume of water transported from nearshore to offshore during the event. The model transport is the result of nearshore flow in the direction of the wind and a pressure-gradient-driven counter flow in the deeper offshore waters, consistent with observations. The volume of offshore transport associated with the 2016 plume is estimated by both methods to have been on the order of 1010 m3. Analysis of similar events from 2008-2016 shows a strong relationship between specific wind impulse and plume volume. Differences in the intensity and duration of individual events as well as ice cover, which prevents plume formation, lead to interannual variability of offshore transport ranging over an order of magnitude and illustrates how wind-driven processes may contribute to interannual variability of ecosystem functioning.

Calculating Photoabsorption Cross-Sections for Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compounds.

Project description:Characterizing the photochemical reactivity of transient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in our atmosphere begins with a proper understanding of their abilities to absorb sunlight. Unfortunately, the photoabsorption cross-sections for a large number of transient VOCs remain unavailable experimentally due to their short lifetime or high reactivity. While structure-activity relationships (SARs) have been successfully employed to estimate the unknown photoabsorption cross-sections of VOCs, computational photochemistry offers another promising strategy to predict not only the vertical electronic transitions of a given molecule but also the width and shape of the bands forming its absorption spectrum. In this work, we focus on the use of the nuclear ensemble approach (NEA) to determine the photoabsorption cross-section of four exemplary VOCs, namely, acrolein, methylhydroperoxide, 2-hydroperoxy-propanal, and (microsolvated) pyruvic acid. More specifically, we analyze the influence that different strategies for sampling the ground-state nuclear density-Wigner sampling and ab initio molecular dynamics with a quantum thermostat-can have on the simulated absorption spectra. We highlight the potential shortcomings of using uncoupled harmonic modes within Wigner sampling of nuclear density to describe flexible or microsolvated VOCs and some limitations of SARs for multichromophoric VOCs. Our results suggest that the NEA could constitute a powerful tool for the atmospheric community to predict the photoabsorption cross-section for transient VOCs.
