Chemical control of electrical contact to sp² carbon atoms.

ABSTRACT: Carbon-based nanostructures are attracting tremendous interest as components in ultrafast electronics and optoelectronics. The electrical interfaces to these structures play a crucial role for the electron transport, but the lack of control at the atomic scale can hamper device functionality and integration into operating circuitry. Here we study a prototype carbon-based molecular junction consisting of a single C60 molecule and probe how the electric current through the junction depends on the chemical nature of the foremost electrode atom in contact with the molecule. We find that the efficiency of charge injection to a C60 molecule varies substantially for the considered metallic species, and demonstrate that the relative strength of the metal-C bond can be extracted from our transport measurements. Our study further suggests that a single-C60 junction is a basic model to explore the properties of electrical contacts to meso- and macroscopic sp(2) carbon structures.

Project description:Controlling the orientation of redox enzymes on electrode surfaces is essential in the development of direct electron transfer (DET)-based bioelectrocatalytic systems. The electron transfer (ET) distance varies according to the enzyme orientation when immobilized on an electrode surface, which influences the interfacial ET rate. We report control of the orientation of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) as a model enzyme through the fusion of gold-binding peptide (gbp) at either the N- or the C-terminus, and at both termini to strengthen the binding interactions between the fusion enzyme and the gold surface. Key factors influenced by the gbp fusion site are described. Collectively, our data show that control of the CODH orientation on an electrode surface is achieved through the presence of dual tethering sites, which maintains the enzyme cofactor within a DET-available distance (<14 Å), thereby promoting DET at the enzyme-electrode interface.

Quantum-Chemical Prediction of Molecular and Electronic Structure of Carbon-Nitrogen Chemical Compound with Unusual Ratio Atoms: C(N20)

Project description:Using various versions of quantum-chemical calculation, namely four versions of density functional theory (DFT), (DFT B3PW91/TZVP, DFT M06/TZVP, DFT B3PW91/Def2TZVP, and DFT M06/Def2TZVP) and two versions of the MP method (MP2/TZVP and MP3/TZVP), the existence possibility of the carbon-nitrogen-containing compound having an unusual M: nitrogen ratio of 1:20, unknown for these elements at present, was shown. Structural parameters data are presented; it was noted that, as may be expected, CN4 grouping has practically a tetrahedral structure, and the chemical bond lengths formed by nitrogen atoms and a carbon atom in the frameworks of each of the calculation methods indicated above are equal to each other. Thermodynamical parameters, NBO analysis data, and HOMO/LUMO images for this compound are also presented. A good agreement between the calculated data obtained using the above three quantum-chemical methods was noticed, too.

A new chemical compound with an unusual ratio of number of carbon and nitrogen atoms - C(N<sub>12</sub>): quantum-chemical modelling.

Project description:Based on the results of a quantum chemical calculation using the DFT B3PW91/TZVP, MP2/TZVP and MP3/TZVP levels, the possibility of the existence of carbon-nitrogen compounds having the unusual carbon : nitrogen ratio 1 : 12, which is unknown for these elements at present, was shown. Data on the structural parameters are presented; it was shown that all CN4 groupings are strictly planar. In addition, the bond lengths formed by nitrogen atoms and a C atom are equal to each other, and the bond angles formed by nitrogen atoms and a C atom are equal to 90.0°, or practically do not differ from this value. Thermodynamical parameters, NBO analysis data and HOMO/LUMO images for this compound are presented, too. Good agreement was found between the calculated data obtained using the above three quantum-chemical methods.

Detection of gas atoms with carbon nanotubes

Project description:Owning to their unparalleled sensitivity resolution, nanomechanical resonators have excellent capabilities in design of nano-sensors for gas detection. The current challenge is to develop new designs of the resonators for differentiating distinct gas atoms with a recognizably high sensitivity. In this work, the characteristics of impulse wave propagation in carbon nanotube-based sensors are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations to provide a new method for detection of noble gases. A sensitivity index based on wave velocity shifts in a single-walled carbon nanotube, induced by surrounding gas atoms, is defined to explore the efficiency of the nano-sensor. The simulation results indicate that the nano-sensor is able to differentiate distinct noble gases at the same environmental temperature and pressure. The inertia and the strengthening effects by the gases on wave characteristics of carbon nanotubes are particularly discussed, and a continuum mechanics shell model is developed to interpret the effects.

Interplay of structure and photophysics of individualized rod-shaped graphene quantum dots with up to 132 sp² carbon atoms.

Project description:Nanographene materials are promising building blocks for the growing field of low-dimensional materials for optics, electronics and biophotonics applications. In particular, bottom-up synthesized 0D graphene quantum dots show great potential as single quantum emitters. To fully exploit their exciting properties, the graphene quantum dots must be of high purity; the key parameter for efficient purification being the solubility of the starting materials. Here, we report the synthesis of a family of highly soluble and easily processable rod-shaped graphene quantum dots with fluorescence quantum yields up to 94%. This is uncommon for a red emission. The high solubility is directly related to the design of the structure, allowing for an accurate description of the photophysical properties of the graphene quantum dots both in solution and at the single molecule level. These photophysical properties were fully predicted by quantum-chemical calculations.

A valve powered by earthworm muscle with both electrical and 100% chemical control.

Project description:Development of bio-microactuators combining microdevices and cellular mechanical functions has been an active research field owing to their desirable properties including high mechanical integrity and biocompatibility. Although various types of devices were reported, the use of as-is natural muscle tissue should be more effective. An earthworm muscle-driven valve has been created. Long-time (more than 2 min) and repeatable displacement was observed by chemical (acetylcholine) stimulation. The generated force of the muscle (1 cm × 3 cm) was 1.57 mN on average for 2 min by the acetylcholine solution (100 mM) stimulation. We demonstrated an on-chip valve that stopped the constant pressure flow by the muscle contraction. For electrical control, short pulse stimulation was used for the continuous and repeatable muscle contraction. The response time was 3 s, and the pressure resistance was 3.0 kPa. Chemical stimulation was then used for continuous muscle contraction. The response time was 42 s, and the pressure resistance was 1.5 kPa. The ON (closed) state was kept for at least 2 min. An on-chip valve was demonstrated that stopped the constant pressure flow by the muscle contraction. This is the first demonstration of the muscle-based valve that is 100% chemically actuated and controlled.

Chemical Control and Spectral Fingerprints of Electronic Coupling in Carbon Nanostructures.

Project description:The optical and electronic properties of atomically thin materials such as single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene are sensitively influenced by substrates, the degree of aggregation, and the chemical environment. However, it has been experimentally challenging to determine the origin and quantify these effects. Here we use time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations to simulate these properties for well-defined molecular systems. We investigate a series of core-shell structures containing C60 enclosed in progressively larger carbon shells and their perhydrogenated or perfluorinated derivatives. Our calculations reveal strong electronic coupling effects that depend sensitively on the interparticle distance and on the surface chemistry. In many of these systems we predict considerable orbital mixing and charge transfer between the C60 core and the enclosing shell. We predict that chemical functionalization of the shell can modulate the electronic coupling to the point where the core and shell are completely decoupled into two electronically independent chemical systems. Additionally, we predict that the C60 core will oscillate within the confining shell, at a frequency directly related to the strength of the electronic coupling. This low-frequency motion should be experimentally detectable in the IR region.

Gold catalysts containing interstitial carbon atoms boost hydrogenation activity.

Project description:Supported gold nanoparticles are emerging catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic reactions, including selective hydrogenation. The traditionally used supports such as silica do not favor the heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen on the surface of gold, thus limiting its hydrogenation activity. Here we use gold catalyst particles partially embedded in the pore walls of mesoporous carbon with carbon atoms occupying interstitial sites in the gold lattice. This catalyst allows improved electron transfer from carbon to gold and, when used for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, gives a three times higher turn-over frequency (TOF) than that for the well-established Au/TiO2 system. The d electron gain of Au is linearly related to the activation entropy and TOF. The catalyst is stable, and can be recycled ten times with negligible loss of both reaction rate and overall conversion. This strategy paves the way for optimizing noble metal catalysts to give an enhanced hydrogenation catalytic performance.

Pyramidalization of backbone carbonyl carbon atoms in proteins.

Project description:The high accuracy of X-ray analyses at atomic resolution is now able to display subtle deformations from standard geometry of building blocks in proteins. From the analysis of nine ultra-high resolution protein structures, we derived the first experimental evidence that a significant pyramidalization at the main-chain carbonyl carbon atom occurs in proteins. Our findings also show that this pyramidalization is related to the main-chain psi torsion angle. The carbonyl carbon atoms of residues that adopt alphaR and extended conformations show a clear preference for positive and negative pyramidalization, respectively. The agreement between our data and those previously obtained from small molecule structures demonstrates that carbon pyramidalization is an intrinsic property of the peptide structure. Although small in magnitude, the pyramidalization is well preserved in the complex folded state of a macromolecular structure that results from the interplay of many different forces. In addition, this property of the peptide group may have interesting implications for the enzymatic reactions involving the carbonyl carbon atoms.

Whispering galleries and the control of artificial atoms.

Project description:Quantum computation using artificial-atoms, such as novel superconducting circuits, can be sensitively controlled by external electromagnetic fields. These fields and the self-fields attributable to the coupled artificial-atoms influence the amount of quantum correlation in the system. However, control elements that can operate without complete destruction of the entanglement of the quantum-bits are difficult to engineer. Here we investigate the possibility of using closely-spaced-linear arrays of metallic-elliptical discs as whispering gallery waveguides to control artificial-atoms. The discs confine and guide radiation through the array with small notches etched into their sides that act as scatterers. We focus on π-ring artificial-atoms, which can generate their own spontaneous fluxes. We find that the micro-discs of the waveguides can be excited by terahertz frequency fields to exhibit whispering-modes and that a quantum-phase-gate composed of π-rings can be operated under their influence. Furthermore, we gauge the level of entanglement through the concurrence measure and show that under certain magnetic conditions a series of entanglement sudden-deaths and revivals occur between the two qubits. This is important for understanding the stability and life-time of qubit operations using, for example, a phase gate in a hybrid of quantum technologies composed of control elements and artificial-atoms.
