Interfacial nanodroplets guided construction of hierarchical Au, Au-Pt, and Au-Pd particles as excellent catalysts.

ABSTRACT: Interfacial nanodroplets were grafted to the surfaces of self-sacrificed template particles in a galvanic reaction system to assist the construction of 3D Au porous structures. The interfacial nanodroplets were formed via direct adsorption of surfactant-free emulsions onto the particle surfaces. The interfacial nanodroplets discretely distributed at the template particle surfaces and served as soft templates to guide the formation of porous Au structures. The self-variation of footprint sizes of interfacial nanodroplets during Au growth gave rise to a hierarchical pore size distribution of the obtained Au porous particles. This strategy could be easily extended to synthesize bimetal porous particles such as Au-Pt and Au-Pd. The obtained porous Au, Au-Pt, and Au-Pd particles showed excellent catalytic activity in catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Oxidation of Dichloromethane over Au, Pt, and Pt-Au Containing Catalysts Supported on γ-Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3.

Project description:Au, Pt, and Pt-Au catalysts supported on Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3 were studied in the oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2). High DCM oxidation activities and HCl selectivities were seen with all the catalysts. With the addition of Au, remarkably lower light-off temperatures were observed as they were reduced by 70 and 85 degrees with the Al2O3-supported and by 35 and 40 degrees with the CeO2-Al2O3-supported catalysts. Excellent HCl selectivities close to 100% were achieved with the Au/Al2O3 and Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalysts. The addition of ceria on alumina decreased the total acidity of these catalysts, resulting in lower performance. The 100-h stability test showed that the Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalyst was active and durable, but the selectivity towards the total oxidation products needs improvement. The results suggest that, with the Au-containing Al2O3-supported catalysts, DCM decomposition mainly occurs via direct DCM hydrolysis into formaldehyde and HCl followed by the oxidation of formaldehyde into CO and CO2.

Strong Fe3+-O(H)-Pt Interfacial Interaction Induced Excellent Stability of Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO Electrocatalysts.

Project description:Agglomeration-triggered deactivation of supported platinum electrocatalysts markedly hinders their application in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this study, graphene-supported nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH/rGO), in which Fe3+ was introduced to replace Ni2+ partially in the Ni(OH)2 lattice to provide stronger metal-support bonding sites, was utilized to immobilize Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Given the optimized metal-support interfacial contact (Fe3+-O(H)-Pt) between Pt NPs and NiFe-LDH/rGO nanosheets for Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO electrocatalysts, the Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO electrocatalysts displayed dramatically enhanced durability than that of Pt/Ni(OH)2/rGO counterpart as well as commercial Pt/C, and 86.5% of its initial catalytic activity can be maintained even after 1200 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests during MOR. First-principle calculations toward the resultant M-O(H)-Pt (M = Fe3+, Ni2+) interfacial structure further corroborates that the NiFe-LDH nanosheets can provide stronger bonding sites (via the Fe3+-O(H)-Pt bonds) to immobilize Pt NPs than those of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets (via the Ni2+-O(H)-Pt bonds).

Au-Pt-Ni nanochains as dopamine catalysts: role of elements and their spatial distribution.

Project description:Multi-element materials can improve biosensing ability as each element can catalyze different steps in a reaction pathway. By combining Pt and Ni on self-assembled 1D gold nanochains and controlling their spatial distribution, a detailed understanding of each element's role in dopamine oxidation is developed. In addition, the developed synthesis process provides a simple way to fabricate multi-element composites for electrocatalytic applications based on electrical double-layer formation on the surface of charged nanoparticles. The performance parameters of the catalyst, such as its sensitivity, limit of detection, and range of operation for dopamine sensing, are optimized by changing the relative ratios of Pt : Ni and the morphology of the Pt and Ni domains, using the developed understanding. The morphology of the domains also affects the oxidation state of Ni, which is crucial to the performance of the electrocatalyst.

New atomically precise <b>M1Ag21</b> (M = Au/Ag) nanoclusters as excellent oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

Project description:By introducing 1,1'-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) as an activating ligand, two novel nanoclusters, M1Ag21 (M = Au/Ag), have been controllably synthesized and structurally characterized. The atomically precise structures of the M1Ag21 nanoclusters were determined by SCXC and further confirmed by ESI-TOF-MS, TGA, XPS, DPV, and FT-IR measurements. The M1Ag21 nanoclusters supported on activated carbon (C) are exploited as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in alkaline solutions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that the catalytic activities of the two cluster-based systems originate from the significant ensemble synergy effect between the M13 kernel and dppf ligand in M1Ag21. This work sheds lights on the preparation of cluster-based electrocatalysts and other catalysts that are activated and modified by peripheral ligands.

Low Metal Loading (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd) Photo-Catalysts Supported on TiO2 for Renewable Processes.

Project description:Photo-catalysts based on titanium dioxide, and modified with highly dispersed metallic nanoparticles of Au, Ag, Pd and Pt, either mono- or bi-metallic, have been analyzed by multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, SEM, EDX, UV-Vis and N2 adsorption/desorption. Mono-metallic photo-catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation, while bi-metallic photocatalysts were obtained via deposition-precipitation (DP). The relationship between the physico-chemical properties and the catalyst's behavior for various photo-synthetic processes, such as carbon dioxide photo-reduction to liquid products and glucose photo-reforming to hydrogen have been investigated. Among the tested materials, the catalysts containing platinum alone (i.e., 0.1 mol% Pt/TiO2) or bi-metallic gold-containing materials (e.g., 1 wt% (AuxAgy)/TiO2 and 1 wt% (AuxPtz)/TiO2) showed the highest activity, presenting the best results in terms of productivity and conversion for both applications. The textural, structural and morphological properties of the different samples being very similar, the main parameters to improve performance were function of the metal as electron sink, together with optoelectronic properties. The high activity in both applications was related to the low band gap, that allows harvesting more energy from a polychromatic light source with respect to the bare TiO2. Overall, high selectivity and productivity were achieved with respect to most literature data.

Interfacial interaction modes construction of various functional SSBR-silica towards high filler dispersion and excellent composites performances.

Project description:In this study, various interfacial interaction modes between silica and in-chain functionalized solution styrene butadiene rubbers (F-SSBRs) with -OH (3-mercaptopropanol, MPL), -COOH (11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, MUA), and -Si-(OCH2CH3)3 (3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane, MPTES) were constructed at the molecular level. As the modes of interfacial interaction followed the order of single hydrogen bond interactions to dual hydrogen/covalent bond interactions to single covalent bond interactions, the interfacial interactions presented silica/SSBR-g-MPL < silica/SSBR-g-MUA < silica/SSBR-g-MPTES. Moreover, the interfacial interactions were enhanced as the grafting percentages of the functional group increased. The results showed that silica dispersion was enhanced upon improving the interfacial interaction. As the filler-rubber networks improved and filler-filler networks decreased, the dynamic mechanical properties of the silica/F-SSBR composites improved and were even superior to those of the silica/SSBR/bis(γ-triethoxysilylpropyl)-tetrasulfide (Si69) composite. The rolling resistances of silica/SSBR-g-MPL, silica/SSBR-g-MUA, and silica/SSBR-g-MPTES composites decreased by 21.2%, 27.3%, and 50.8%, respectively. The wet skid resistances of silica/SSBR-g-MPL, silica/SSBR-g-MUA, and silica/SSBR-g-MPTES composites increased by 112.7%, 161.2%, and 184.3%, respectively. However, the excessively strong rubber-rubber networks led to poor mechanical properties. Filler-rubber, filler-filler, and rubber-rubber networks reached equilibrium in the silica/SSBR-g-MUA composite, which had excellent overall performances of high strength, low rolling resistance, and high wet skid resistance.

Direct Growth of a Polypyrrole Aerogel on Hollow CuS Hierarchical Microspheres Yields Particles with Excellent Electromagnetic Wave Properties.

Project description:A current hot topic in polymer science is the development of electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials with desired properties (i.e., proper impedance matching and strong attenuation capability), but it presents a considerable challenge. In this work, solvothermal, and self-assembled polymerization were employed for the controlled fabrication of a uniform polypyrrole (PPy) aerogel coated on hollow CuS hierarchical microspheres (CuS@PPy). The PPy coating thickness of the heterostructure could be tuned by varying the feeding weight ratios of CuS/pyrrole monomer. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the CuS@PPy composites were estimated to be in the frequency range 2⁻18 GHz. The as-prepared Sample B (fabricated by the addition of 35 mg CuS) showed a maximum reflection loss (RL) of -52.85 dB at a thickness of 2.5 mm. Moreover, an ultra-wide effective bandwidth (RL ≤ -10 dB) from 9.78 to 17.80 GHz (8.02 GHz) was achieved. Analysis of the electromagnetic properties demonstrated that the CuS@PPy had a remarkable enhancement compared to pure CuS platelet-based spheres and pure PPy, which can be attributed to the increased relatively complex permittivity and the promoted dielectric loss by the intense interfacial dielectric polarizations. We believe that the as-fabricated CuS@PPy can be a good reference for the fabrication of lightweight and optimal broadband absorbers.

Remodeling nanodroplets into hierarchical mesoporous silica nanoreactors with multiple chambers

Project description:Multi-chambered architectures have attracted much attention due to the ability to establish multifunctional partitions in different chambers, but manipulating the chamber numbers and coupling multi-functionality within the multi-chambered mesoporous nanoparticle remains a challenge. Herein, we propose a nanodroplet remodeling strategy for the synthesis of hierarchical multi-chambered mesoporous silica nanoparticles with tunable architectures. Typically, the dual-chambered nanoparticles with a high surface area of ~469 m2 g−1 present two interconnected cavities like a calabash. Furthermore, based on this nanodroplet remodeling strategy, multiple species (magnetic, catalytic, optic, etc.) can be separately anchored in different chamber without obvious mutual-crosstalk. We design a dual-chambered mesoporous nanoreactors with spatial isolation of Au and Pd active-sites for the cascade synthesis of 2-phenylindole from 1-nitro-2-(phenylethynyl)benzene. Due to the efficient mass transfer of reactants and intermediates in the dual-chambered structure, the selectivity of the target product reaches to ~76.5%, far exceeding that of single-chambered nanoreactors (~41.3%). Multi-chambered structures have attracted great attention due to their ability to create multifunctional partitions in different chambers. Here, the authors prepared mesoporous silica nanoreactors with hierarchical chambers for catalytic cascades.

Shell-Isolated Au Nanoparticles Functionalized with Rhodamine B Fluorophores in Helium Nanodroplets.

Project description:Nanoparticles consisting of three different materials in a layered core@shell@shell structure are synthesized in cold helium droplets by sequential doping. Upon the formation of Au core particles, a first shell layer is formed by adding either Ar, isopropyl alcohol, or hexane. Subsequently, the droplets are doped with rhodamine B (RB) molecules; fluorescence spectra recorded upon laser excitation at 532 nm provide insight into the structure of the formed complexes. For the two-component Au@RB system, the RB fluorescence is quenched in the presence of the Au core. If an intermediate isolating shell layer is introduced (Au@shell@RB), the fluorescence increases again. The results demonstrate that shell-isolated nanoparticles can be formed inside He nanodroplets and functionalized in situ with additional molecules. As the structure of the particles depends on the pickup sequence, the approach can be exploited for the synthesis and investigation of a large variety of different combinations of plasmonic metals, intermediate layers, and molecules.
