Spin Hall voltages from a.c. and d.c. spin currents.

ABSTRACT: In spin electronics, the spin degree of freedom is used to transmit and store information. To this end the ability to create pure spin currents--that is, without net charge transfer--is essential. When the magnetization vector in a ferromagnet-normal metal junction is excited, the spin pumping effect leads to the injection of pure spin currents into the normal metal. The polarization of this spin current is time-dependent and contains a very small d.c. component. Here we show that the large a.c. component of the spin currents can be detected efficiently using the inverse spin Hall effect. The observed a.c.-inverse spin Hall voltages are one order of magnitude larger than the conventional d.c.-inverse spin Hall voltages measured on the same device. Our results demonstrate that ferromagnet-normal metal junctions are efficient sources of pure spin currents in the gigahertz frequency range.

Bending strain engineering in quantum spin hall system for controlling spin currents.

Project description:Quantum spin Hall system can exhibit exotic spin transport phenomena, mediated by its topological edge states. Here the concept of bending strain engineering to tune the spin transport properties of a quantum spin Hall system is demonstrated. We show that bending strain can be used to control the spin orientation of counter-propagating edge states of a quantum spin system to generate a non-zero spin current. This physics mechanism can be applied to effectively tune the spin current and pure spin current decoupled from charge current in a quantum spin Hall system by control of its bending curvature. Furthermore, the curved quantum spin Hall system can be achieved by the concept of topological nanomechanical architecture in a controllable way, as demonstrated by the material example of Bi/Cl/Si(111) nanofilm. This concept of bending strain engineering of spins via topological nanomechanical architecture affords a promising route towards the realization of topological nano-mechanospintronics.

Chiral antiferromagnetic Josephson junctions as spin-triplet supercurrent spin valves and d.c. SQUIDs.

Project description:Spin-triplet supercurrent spin valves are of practical importance for the realization of superconducting spintronic logic circuits. In ferromagnetic Josephson junctions, the magnetic-field-controlled non-collinearity between the spin-mixer and spin-rotator magnetizations switches the spin-polarized triplet supercurrents on and off. Here we report an antiferromagnetic equivalent of such spin-triplet supercurrent spin valves in chiral antiferromagnetic Josephson junctions as well as a direct-current superconducting quantum interference device. We employ the topological chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Ge, in which the Berry curvature of the band structure produces fictitious magnetic fields, and the non-collinear atomic-scale spin arrangement accommodates triplet Cooper pairing over long distances (>150 nm). We theoretically verify the observed supercurrent spin-valve behaviours under a small magnetic field of <2 mT for current-biased junctions and the direct-current superconducting quantum interference device functionality. Our calculations reproduce the observed hysteretic field interference of the Josephson critical current and link these to the magnetic-field-modulated antiferromagnetic texture that alters the Berry curvature. Our work employs band topology to control the pairing amplitude of spin-triplet Cooper pairs in a single chiral antiferromagnet.

Acoustic spin Hall effect in strong spin-orbit metals.

Project description:We report on the observation of the acoustic spin Hall effect that facilitates lattice motion-induced spin current via spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Under excitation of surface acoustic wave (SAW), we find that a spin current flows orthogonal to the SAW propagation in nonmagnetic metals (NMs). The acoustic spin Hall effect manifests itself in a field-dependent acoustic voltage in NM/ferromagnetic metal bilayers. The acoustic voltage takes a maximum when the NM layer thickness is close to its spin diffusion length, vanishes for NM layers with weak SOI, and increases linearly with the SAW frequency. To account for these results, we find that the spin current must scale with the SOI and the time derivative of the lattice displacement. These results, which imply the strong coupling of electron spins with rotating lattices via the SOI, show the potential of lattice dynamics to supply spin current in strong spin-orbit metals.

Spin-neutral currents for spintronics.

Project description:Electric currents carrying a net spin polarization are widely used in spintronics, whereas globally spin-neutral currents are expected to play no role in spin-dependent phenomena. Here we show that, in contrast to this common expectation, spin-independent conductance in compensated antiferromagnets and normal metals can be efficiently exploited in spintronics, provided their magnetic space group symmetry supports a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface. Due to their momentum-dependent spin polarization, such antiferromagnets can be used as active elements in antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions (AFMTJs) and produce a giant tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. Using RuO2 as a representative compensated antiferromagnet exhibiting spin-independent conductance along the [001] direction but a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface, we design a RuO2/TiO2/RuO2 (001) AFMTJ, where a globally spin-neutral charge current is controlled by the relative orientation of the Néel vectors of the two RuO2 electrodes, resulting in the TMR effect as large as ~500%. These results are expanded to normal metals which can be used as a counter electrode in AFMTJs with a single antiferromagnetic layer or other elements in spintronic devices. Our work uncovers an unexplored potential of the materials with no global spin polarization for utilizing them in spintronics.

Spin-Hall-effect-modulation skyrmion oscillator.

Project description:The electric-current-induced spin torque on local magnetization allows the electric control of magnetization, leading to numerous key concepts of spintronic devices. Utilizing the steady-state spin precession under spin-polarized current, a nanoscale spin-torque oscillator tunable over GHz range is one of those promising concepts. Albeit successful proof of principles to date, the spin-torque oscillators still suffer from issues regarding output power, linewidth and magnetic-field-free operation. Here we propose an entirely new concept of spin-torque oscillator, based on magnetic skyrmion dynamics subject to lateral modulation of the spin-Hall effect (SHE). In the oscillator, a skyrmion circulates around the modulation boundary between opposite SHE-torque regions, since the SHE pushes the skyrmion toward the modulation boundary in both regions. A micromagnetic simulation confirmed such oscillations with frequencies of up to 15 GHz in media composed of synthetic ferrimagnets. This fast and robust SHE-modulation-based skyrmion oscillator is expected to overcome the issues associated with conventional spin-torque oscillators.

Generation of megahertz-band spin currents using nonlinear spin pumping.

Project description:Spin pumping enables the generation of d.c. and gigahertz-band (GHz-band) voltages from an applied microwave via magnetization dynamics when combined with inverse spin Hall effects. However, generating such voltages in the in-between frequency region, or the megahertz (MHz) band, has been difficult since ferromagnetic resonance usually occurs in the GHz band. Here we show that in spite of GHz-band microwaves applied, MHz-band voltages can be generated by spin pumping with use of nonlinear magnetization dynamics in Y3Fe5O12. The mechanism is ascribed to the MHz-band oscillation of the amplitude of the magnetization precession, which is projected onto a rectified voltage component via spin pumping. The present finding could be useful for frequency down-conversion thanks to the simple and durable structure, continuous-wave operation, and the tunability of an output frequency with low magnetic fields.

Excitation of coherent propagating spin waves by pure spin currents.

Project description:Utilization of pure spin currents not accompanied by the flow of electrical charge provides unprecedented opportunities for the emerging technologies based on the electron's spin degree of freedom, such as spintronics and magnonics. It was recently shown that pure spin currents can be used to excite coherent magnetization dynamics in magnetic nanostructures. However, because of the intrinsic nonlinear self-localization effects, magnetic auto-oscillations in the demonstrated devices were spatially confined, preventing their applications as sources of propagating spin waves in magnonic circuits using these waves as signal carriers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate efficient excitation and directional propagation of coherent spin waves generated by pure spin current. We show that this can be achieved by using the nonlocal spin injection mechanism, which enables flexible design of magnetic nanosystems and allows one to efficiently control their dynamic characteristics.

Spin Hall effect of transversely spinning light.

Project description:Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light-a T-spin-induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin-induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Oscillatory interlayer coupling in spin Hall systems.

Project description:Many spintronics applications consist of ultrathin magnetic and nonmagnetic multilayers and require an in-depth understanding of interfacial magnetism and spin transport. Here, we study permalloy/copper/platinum multilayer systems. We find that magnetic damping, perpendicular anisotropy, and proximity magnetization exhibit correlated oscillations as a function of the copper thickness. We ascribe these observations to an oscillatory interlayer coupling between permalloy and platinum. Such interlayer coupling may have a significant impact on the performance of spintronics applications.

Spin valley and giant quantum spin Hall gap of hydrofluorinated bismuth nanosheet.

Project description:Spin-valley and electronic band topological properties have been extensively explored in quantum material science, yet their coexistence has rarely been realized in stoichiometric two-dimensional (2D) materials. We theoretically predict the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in the hydrofluorinated bismuth (Bi2HF) nanosheet where the hydrogen (H) and fluorine (F) atoms are functionalized on opposite sides of bismuth (Bi) atomic monolayer. Such Bi2HF nanosheet is found to be a 2D topological insulator with a giant band gap of 0.97 eV which might host room temperature QSHE. The atomistic structure of Bi2HF nanosheet is noncentrosymmetric and the spontaneous polarization arises from the hydrofluorinated morphology. The phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) calculations reveal that the proposed Bi2HF nanosheet is dynamically and thermally stable. The inversion symmetry breaking together with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to the coupling between spin and valley in Bi2HF nanosheet. The emerging valley-dependent properties and the interplay between intrinsic dipole and SOC are investigated using first-principles calculations combined with an effective Hamiltonian model. The topological invariant of the Bi2HF nanosheet is confirmed by using Wilson loop method and the calculated helical metallic edge states are shown to host QSHE. The Bi2HF nanosheet is therefore a promising platform to realize room temperature QSHE and valley spintronics.
