When VSEPR fails: experimental and theoretical investigations of the behavior of alkaline-earth-metal acetylides.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis, structural, and spectral characterization as well as a theoretical study of a family of alkaline-earth-metal acetylides provides insights into synthetic access and the structural and bonding characteristics of this group of highly reactive compounds. Based on our earlier communication that reported unusual geometry for a family of triphenylsilyl-substituted alkaline-earth-metal acetylides, we herein present our studies on an expanded family of target derivatives, providing experimental and theoretical data to offer new insights into the intensively debated theme of structural chemistry in heavy alkaline-earth-metal chemistry.

Role of Alkaline-Earth Metal-Catalyst: A Theoretical Study of Pyridines Hydroboration.

Project description:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to investigate the mechanism of alkaline-earth-metal-catalyzed hydroboration of pyridines with borane. In this reaction, the active catalytic species is considered to be an alkaline earth metal hydride complex when the corresponding alkaline earth metal is used as the catalyst. The theoretical results reveal that initiation of the catalytic cycle is hydride transfer to generate a magnesium hydride complex when β-diimine alkylmagnesium is used as a pre-catalyst. The magnesium hydride complex can undergo coordination of the pyridine reactant followed by hydride transfer to form a dearomatized magnesium pyridine intermediate. Coordination of borane and hydride transfer from borohydride to magnesium then give the hydroboration product and regenerate the active magnesium hydride catalyst. The rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle is hydride transfer to pyridine with a free energy barrier of 29.7 kcal/mol. Other alkaline earth metal complexes, including calcium and strontium complexes, were also considered. The DFT calculations show that the corresponding activation free energies for the rate-determining step of this reaction with calcium and strontium catalysts are much lower than with the magnesium catalyst. Therefore, calcium and strontium complexes can be used as the catalyst for the reaction, which could allow mild reaction conditions.

Metal-metal bonded alkaline-earth distannyls.

Project description:The first families of alkaline-earth stannylides [Ae(SnPh3)2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 3, 1; Sr, x = 3, 2; Ba, x = 4, 3) and [Ae{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 4, 4; Sr, x = 4, 5; Ba, x = 4, 6), where Ae is a large alkaline earth with direct Ae-Sn bonds, are presented. All complexes have been characterised by high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy, including 119Sn NMR, and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The molecular structures of [Ca(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (1'), [Sr(SnPh3)2·(thf)4] (2'), [Ba(SnPh3)2·(thf)5] (3'), 4, 5 and [Ba{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)5] (6'), most of which crystallised as higher thf solvates than their parents 1-6, were established by XRD analysis; the experimentally determined Sn-Ae-Sn' angles lie in the range 158.10(3)-179.33(4)°. In a given series, the 119Sn NMR chemical shifts are slightly deshielded upon descending group 2 from Ca to Ba, while the silyl-substituted stannyls are much more shielded than the phenyl ones (δ 119Sn/ppm: 1', -133.4; 2', -123.6; 3', -95.5; 4, -856.8; 5, -848.2; 6', -792.7). The bonding and electronic properties of these complexes were also analysed by DFT calculations. The combined spectroscopic, crystallographic and computational analysis of these complexes provide some insight into the main features of these unique families of homoleptic complexes. A comprehensive DFT study (Wiberg bond index, QTAIM and energy decomposition analysis) points at a primarily ionic Ae-Sn bonding, with a small covalent contribution, in these series of complexes; the Sn-Ae-Sn' angle is associated with a flat energy potential surface around its minimum, consistent with the broad range of values determined by experimental and computational methods.

Alkaline and Alkaline-earth Cyanoacetylides: A Combined Theoretical and Rotational Spectroscopic Investigation.

Project description:The metallic cyanoacetylides LiC3N, NaC3N, MgC3N and CaC3N have been investigated by combined spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations. The theoretical calculations predict for the four species that the linear isomer with formula MCCCN (M= Li, Na, Mg and Ca) is the most stable one. We used the laser ablation molecular beam Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy to synthesize these species by the reaction of metal vapors, produced by laser ablation, and the 3-bromo-2-propynenitrile (BrCCCN). The pure rotational spectra were observed by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-18 GHz frequency region only for LiCCCN and NaCCCN, while no spectral signatures for MgCCCN and CaCCCN could be detected. Finally, we have searched for LiCCCN and NaCCCN species towards the carbon-rich evolved star IRC + 10216 but only upper limits to their abundances have been obtained.

Emerging superconductivity rules in rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal hydrides.

Project description:Hydrides of alkaline-earth and rare-earth metals have garnered significant interest in high-temperature superconductor research due to their excellent electron-phonon coupling and high T c upon pressurization. This study explores the electronic structures and electron-phonon coupling of metal hydrides XHn (n = 4,6), where X includes Ca, Mg, Sc, and Y. The involvement of d-orbital electrons alters the Fermi surface, leading to saddle-point nesting and a charge density wave (CDW) phase transition, which opens the superconducting gap. For instance, in YH6, the exchange coupling between Y-4d and H-1s holes in the phonon softening region results in T c values up to 230 K. The study suggests that factors, such as the origin of the CDW order, hydrogen concentration, and d-orbital contributions are crucial to superconductivity. This work proposes a new rule for high T c superconductors, emphasizing the importance of double gaps and electron-phonon interactions at exchange coupling sites, and predicts potential high-quality superconductors among rare-earth hydrides.

Alkaline earth metal-assisted dinitrogen activation at nickel.

Project description:Rare examples of trinuclear [Ni-N2-M-N2-Ni] core (M = Ca, Mg) with linear bridged dinitrogen ligands are reported in this work. The reduction of [iPr2NN]Ni(μ-Br)2Li(thf)2 (1) (iPr2NN = 2,4-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimido)pentyl) with elemental Mg or Ca in THF under an atmosphere of dinitrogen yields the complex {iPr2NNNi(μ-N2)}2M (thf)4 (M = Mg, complex 2 and M = Ca, complex 3). The bridging end-on (μ-N2)2M(thf)4 moiety connects the two [iPr2NNNi]- nickelate fragments. A combination of X-ray crystallography, solution and solid-state spectroscopy have been applied to characterize complexes 2 and 3, and DFT studies have been used to help explain the bonding and electronic structure in these unique Ni-N2-Mg and Ni-N2-Ca complexes.

Disilane Cleavage with Selected Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Salts.

Project description:The industry-scale production of methylchloromonosilanes in the Müller-Rochow Direct Process is accompanied by the formation of a residue, the direct process residue (DPR), comprised of disilanes Men Si2 Cl6-n (n=1-6). Great research efforts have been devoted to the recycling of these disilanes into monosilanes to allow reintroduction into the siloxane production chain. In this work, disilane cleavage by using alkali and alkaline earth metal salts is reported. The reaction with metal hydrides, in particular lithium hydride (LiH), leads to efficient reduction of chlorine containing disilanes but also induces disproportionation into mono- and oligosilanes. Alkali and alkaline earth chlorides, formed in the course of the reduction, specifically induce disproportionation of highly chlorinated disilanes, whereas highly methylated disilanes (n>3) remain unreacted. Nearly quantitative DPR conversion into monosilanes was achieved by using concentrated HCl/ether solutions in the presence of lithium chloride.

Alkaline earth metal vanadates as sodium-ion battery anodes.

Project description:The abundance of sodium resources indicates the potential of sodium-ion batteries as emerging energy storage devices. However, the practical application of sodium-ion batteries is hindered by the limited electrochemical performance of electrode materials, especially at the anode side. Here, we identify alkaline earth metal vanadates as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries. The prepared calcium vanadate nanowires possess intrinsically high electronic conductivity (>?100?S?cm-1), small volume change (<?10%), and a self-preserving effect, which results in a superior cycling and rate performance and an applicable reversible capacity (>?300?mAh?g-1), with an average voltage of ?1.0?V. The specific sodium-storage mechanism, beyond the conventional intercalation or conversion reaction, is demonstrated through in situ and ex situ characterizations and theoretical calculations. This work explores alkaline earth metal vanadates for sodium-ion battery anodes and may open a direction for energy storage.The development of suitable anode materials is essential to advance sodium-ion battery technologies. Here the authors report that alkaline earth metal vanadates are promising candidates due to the favorable electrochemical properties and interesting sodium-storage mechanism.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Different Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Polymers.

Project description:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymers are often considered as the most promising donor moiety in traditional bulk heterojunction solar cell devices. In this paper, we report the synthesis, characterization of various DPP-based copolymers with different molecular weights, and polydispersity where other aromatic repeating units (phenyl or thiophene based) are connected by alternate double bonds or triple bonds. Some of the copolymers were used for device fabrication and the crucial parameters such as fill factor (FF) and open circuit voltage (V oc) were calculated. The density functional theory was used to optimize the geometries and deduce highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps of all the polymers and theoretically predict their optical and electronic properties. Optical properties of all the polymers, electrochemical properties, and band gaps were also obtained experimentally and compared with the theoretically predicted values.

Properties of Alkaline-Earth-Metal Polynitrogen Ternary Materials at High Pressure.

Project description:We report the formation of cubic and tetragonal BaSrN3 at 100 GPa using an ab initio structure search method. Pressure ramping to 0 GPa reveals a reaction pressure threshold of 4.92 and 7.23 GPa for the cubic and tetragonal BaSrN3, respectively. The cubic phase is stabilized by coulombic interaction between the ions. Meanwhile, tetragonal BaSrN3 is stabilized through an expansion of the d-orbital in Ba and Sr atoms that is compensated by delocalization of π-electrons in N through reduction of π overlap. Elastic properties analysis suggests that both phases are mechanically stable. The structures also have high melting points as predicted using an empirical model, and all imaginary modes vanishes at about 2000 K. These results have significant implication for the design of cleaner and environmentally friendly high energy density materials.

Understanding of metal-insulator transition in VO<sub>2</sub> based on experimental and theoretical investigations of magnetic features.

Project description:The metal-insulator transition temperature Tc in VO2 is experimentally shown to be almost the same as a magnetic transition temperature Tm characterized by an abrupt decrease in susceptibility, suggesting the evidence of the same underlying origin for both transitions. The measurement of susceptibility shows that it weakly increases on cooling for temperature range of T > Tm, sharply decreases near Tm and then unusually increases on further cooling. A theoretical approach for such unusual observations in susceptibility near Tm or below is performed by modeling electrons from each two adjacent V4+ ions distributed along V-chains as a two-electron system, which indicates that the spin exchange between electrons could cause a level splitting into a singlet (S = 0) level of lower energy and a triplet (S = 1) level of higher energy. The observed abrupt decrease in susceptibility near Tm is explained to be due to that the sample enters the singlet state in which two electrons from adjacent V4+ ions are paired into dimers in spin antiparallel. By considering paramagnetic contribution of unpaired electrons created by the thermal activation from singlet to triplet levels, an expression for susceptibility is proposed to quantitatively explain the unusual temperature-dependent susceptibility observed at low temperatures. Based on the approach to magnetic features, the observed metal-insulator transition is explained to be due to a transition from high-temperature Pauli paramagnetic metallic state of V4+ions to low-temperature dimerized state of strong electronic localization.
