Representatives of the subfamily bruchinae (coleoptera

Chrysomelidae) are usually small and inconspicuous, with only a few species drawing the attention. Here we deal with several unusually colored species of Amblycerus Thunberg, 1815, one of the two most diverse bruchine genera in the Western hemisphere. We define the virens group that consists of five species whose bodies are covered with a green vestiture, including one new for science, Amblycerus medialis Ribeiro-Costa, Vieira & Manfio, sp. n. (Type locality: Brazil: Pará, Rondônia). This study also provides redescriptions, diagnoses, comparative notes, illustrations, geographic distribution records and a key to the species in this group.

Project description:The type specimens of species of Apionidae described by Carl Peter Thunberg are reviewed and lecto- and paralectotypes are designated for Apion craccae Thunberg, 1813, Apion limbatum Thunberg, 1813, Apion punctigerum Thunberg, 1815 and Apion astragali Thunberg, 1815. A new genus Thunbergapion (type species Apion limbatum Thunberg, 1813) is described, figured and placed in the tribe Aplemonini Kissinger, 1968. The new combination Thunbergapion limbatum (Thunberg, 1813) is proposed. A key to the known South African genera of the tribe is given. The following new synonymies are established: Oxystoma craccae (Linnaeus, 1767) = Apion craccae Thunberg, 1813 syn. n., Ischnopterapion (Ischnopterapion) loti (Kirby, 1808) = Apion punctigerum Thunberg, 1815, syn. n., and Pseudoprotapion astragali (Paykull, 1800) = Apion astragali Thunberg, 1815, syn. n.

Project description:Andersonoplatus, a new genus with 16 new species from Venezuela (A. andersoni, A. bechyneorum, A. castaneus, A. flavus, A. jolyi, A. laculata, A. lagunanegra, A. macubaji, A. merga, A. merida, A. microoculus, A. peck, A. rosalesi, A. sanare, A. saviniae) and Panama (A. baru), is described and illustrated. All the specimens were collected in leaf litter by R. Anderson and S. and J. Peck. Andersonoplatus is compared to Andersonaltica Linzmeier & Konstantinov, Apleuraltica Bechyne, Distigmoptera Blake and Ulrica Scherer.

Project description:A new subgenus and species, Charidotella (Chapadacassis subgen. n.) paradoxasp. n. is described and figured from the Chapada plateau in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Subgenera of Charidotella Weise, 1896 are listed, supplemented with basic data, diagnostic table, and a key is proposed. Based on a study of respective type material following new combinations are proposed: Charidotella (Philaspis) stulta (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) amoenula (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) cyclographa (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) discoidalis (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) incerta (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) purpurea (Linnaeus, 1758), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) myops (Boheman, 1855), comb. n. (all previously placed in the nominotypical subgenus), and Plagiometrionacingulata (Boheman, 1862), comb. n. (from Charidotella (Xenocassis)).

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of <i>Caryopemon giganteus</i> Pic (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae).

Project description:We sequenced, assembled, and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of the seed beetle Caryopemon giganteus, which represents the first report in the tribe Caryopemini from the subfamily Bruchinae of Chrysomelidae. The circular mitochondrial genome of the species contains 15,727 bases, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and a non-coding region. The GC content of the genome is 25.3%, which is higher than any other reported mitochondrial genomes within Bruchinae. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene and the 12S ribosomal RNA gene are 1284 and 835 bp in length, respectively. 12 PCGs started with the typical ATN codon, except for ND1 initiated with TTG. Five PCGs have the typical stop codon of TAA or TGA, while the remainder PCGs are terminated with incomplete stop codons (TA or T). The phylogenetic analysis based on a combination of 13 genes of the mitochondrial genomes of six species of Bruchinae and 23 species from other 10 subfamilies of Chrysomelidae recovered a generally well resolved and strongly supported tree topology, which shows that C. giganteus has the basalmost position in Bruchinae.

Project description:BackgroundThe genus Charaea Baly is distributed in the eastern Palaearctic, Himalayas, China and adjacent countries of the Oriental Region. Currently, 59 species of the genus Charaea have been recorded. The species of Charaea is characterised with a robust tubular aedeagus that terminates with a more or less distinct apical process with the Charaeacoomani group having an internal sac with long sharp lateral sclerites. Up to now, 13 species of this group have been described in the Oriental Region, four of which are found in Vietnam.New informationCharaeadinhcuongi sp. nov. is described as a new species, based on specimens collected from Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam. Colour photographs of habitus and body details and DNA barcode sequences are presented. An identification key is provided for all Vietnamese species from the Charaeacoomani group.
