Testing of a femtosecond pulse laser in outer space.

ABSTRACT: We report a test operation of an Er-doped fibre femtosecond laser which was conducted for the first time in outer space. The fibre-based ultrashort pulse laser payload was designed to meet space-use requirements, undergone through ground qualification tests and finally launched into a low-earth orbit early in 2013. Test results obtained during a one-year mission lifetime confirmed stable mode-locking all the way through although the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) in the Er-doped gain fibre caused an 8.6% reduction in the output power. This successful test operation would help facilitate diverse scientific and technological applications of femtosecond lasers in space and earth atmosphere in the near future.

Femtosecond-Laser-Pulse Characterization and Optimization for CARS Microscopy.

Project description:We present a simple method and its experimental implementation to determine the pulse durations and linear chirps of the pump-and-probe pulse and the Stokes pulse in a coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscope at sample level without additional autocorrelators. Our approach exploits the delay line, ubiquitous in such microscopes, to perform a convolution of the pump-and-probe and Stokes pulses as a function of their relative delay and it is based on the detection of the photons emitted from an appropriate non-linear sample. The analysis of the non-resonant four-wave-mixing and sum-frequency-generation signals allows for the direct retrieval of the pulse duration on the sample and the linear chirp of each pulse. This knowledge is crucial in maximizing the spectral-resolution and contrast in CARS imaging.

Extending Single Cell Bioprinting from Femtosecond to Picosecond Laser Pulse Durations.

Project description:Femtosecond laser pulses have been successfully used for film-free single-cell bioprinting, enabling precise and efficient selection and positioning of individual mammalian cells from a complex cell mixture (based on morphology or fluorescence) onto a 2D target substrate or a 3D pre-processed scaffold. In order to evaluate the effects of higher pulse durations on the bioprinting process, we investigated cavitation bubble and jet dynamics in the femto- and picosecond regime. By increasing the laser pulse duration from 600 fs to 14.1 ps, less energy is deposited in the hydrogel for the cavitation bubble expansion, resulting in less kinetic energy for the jet propagation with a slower jet velocity. Under appropriate conditions, single cells can be reliably transferred with a cell survival rate after transfer above 95% through the entire pulse duration range. More cost efficient and compact laser sources with pulse durations in the picosecond range could be used for film-free bioprinting and single-cell transfer.

Microsecond cell triple-sorting enabled by multiple pulse irradiation of femtosecond laser.

Project description:Femtosecond-laser-assisted cell manipulation, as one of the high throughput cell sorting techniques, is tailored for single-step multiple sorting based on controllable impulsive force. In this paper, femtosecond laser pulses are focused within a pocket structure and they induce an impulse force acting on the flowing objects. The impulsive force is shown to be controllable by a new method to adjust the femtosecond pulse properties. This allows precise streamline manipulation of objects having various physical qualities (e.g., weight and volume). The pulse energy, pulse number, and pulse interval of the femtosecond laser are altered to determine the impulsive force strength. The method is validated in single cell or bead triple-sorting experiments and its capability to perform streamline manipulation in as little as 10 μs is shown. The shift profiles of the beads acting under the impulsive force are studied in order to better understand the sorting mechanism. Additionally, beads and cells with different fluorescence intensities are successfully detected and directed into different microchannels, with maximum success rates of 90% and 64.5%, respectively. To sum up, all results suggest that this method has the potential to sort arbitrary subpopulations by altering the number of femtosecond pulses and that it takes the first step toward developing a single-step multi-selective system.

Femtosecond Double-Pulse Laser Ablation and Deposition of Co-Doped ZnS Thin Films.

Project description:Nanostructured thin films of Co-doped zinc sulfide were synthesized through femtosecond pulsed laser deposition. The scheme involved ablation of physically mixed Co and ZnS with pairs of ultrashort pulses separated in time in the 0-300 ps range. In situ monitorization of the deposition process was carried out through a simultaneous reflectivity measurement. The crystallinity of generated nanoparticles and the inclusion of Co in the ZnS lattice is demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (TEM-EDX) characterization. Surface morphology, Raman response, and photoluminescence of the films have also been assessed. The role of interpulse temporal separation is most visible in the thickness of the films obtained at the same total fluence, with much thicker films deposited with short delays than with individual uncoupled pulses. The proportion of Co in the synthesized doped ZnS nanoparticles is found to be substantially lower than the original proportion, and practically independent on interpulse delay.

Integrated pulse scope for tunable generation and intrinsic characterization of structured femtosecond laser.

Project description:Numerous techniques have been demonstrated for effective generation of orbital angular momentum-carrying radiation, but intracavity generation of continuously tunable pulses in the femtosecond regime remains challenging. Even if such a creation was realized, the generated pulses-like all pulses in reality-are complex and transitory objects that can only be comprehensively characterized via multidimensional spaces. An integrated lasing system that generates pulses while simultaneously quantifies them can achieve adaptive pulse tailoring. Here, we report a femtosecond pulse scope that unifies vector vortex mode-locked lasing and vectorial quantification. With intracavity-controlled Pancharatnam-Berry phase modulation, continuous and ergodic generation of spirally polarized states along a broadband higher-order Poincaré sphere was realized. By intrinsically coupling a two-dimensional polarization-sensitive time-scanning interferometer to the laser, multidimensional spatiotemporal features of the pulse were further visualized. The proposed methodology paves the way for design optimization of ultrafast optics by integrating complex femtosecond pulse generation and structural customization, facilitating its applications in optical physics research and laser-based manufacturing.

Crystallization of Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films by nano- and femtosecond single laser pulse irradiation.

Project description:The amorphous to crystalline phase transformation of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films by UV nanosecond (ns) and femtosecond (fs) single laser pulse irradiation at the same wavelength is compared. Detailed structural information about the phase transformation is collected by x-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The threshold fluences to induce crystallization are determined for both pulse lengths. A large difference between ns and fs pulse irradiation was found regarding the grain size distribution and morphology of the crystallized films. For fs single pulse irradiated GST thin films, columnar grains with a diameter of 20 to 60 nm were obtained as evidenced by cross-sectional TEM analysis. The local atomic arrangement was investigated by high-resolution Cs-corrected scanning TEM. Neither tetrahedral nor off-octahedral positions of Ge-atoms could be observed in the largely defect-free grains. A high optical reflectivity contrast (~25%) between amorphous and completely crystallized GST films was achieved by fs laser irradiation induced at fluences between 13 and 16 mJ/cm(2) and by ns laser irradiation induced at fluences between 67 and 130 mJ/cm(2). Finally, the fluence dependent increase of the reflectivity is discussed in terms of each photon involved into the crystallization process for ns and fs pulses, respectively.

Designable Layer Edge States in Quasi-2D Perovskites Induced by Femtosecond Pulse Laser.

Project description:The low-energy layer edge states (LESs) from quasi 2D hybrid perovskite single crystals have shown great potential because of their nontrivial photoelectrical properties. However, the underlying formation mechanism of the LESs still remains controversial. Also, the presence or creation of the LESs is of high randomness due to the lack of proper techniques to manually generate these LESs. Herein, using a single crystals platform of quasi-2D (BA)2 (MA)n-1 Pbn I3n+1 (n > 1) perovskites, the femtosecond laser ablation approach to design and write the LESs with a high spatial resolution is reported. Fundamentally, these LESs are of smaller bandgap 3D MAPbI3 nanocrystals which are formed by the laser-induced BA escaping from the lattice and thus the lattice shrinkage from quasi-2D to 3D structures. Furthermore, by covering the crystal with tape, an additional high-energy emission state corresponding to the reformation of (BA)2 PbI4 (n = 1) within the irradiation region is generated. This work presents a simple and efficient protocol to manually write LESs on single crystals and thus lays the foundation for utilizing these LESs to further enhance the performance of future photoelectronic devices.

Single-pulse ultrafast real-time simultaneous planar imaging of femtosecond laser-nanoparticle dynamics in flames.

Project description:The creation of carbonaceous nanoparticles and their dynamics in hydrocarbon flames are still debated in environmental, combustion, and material sciences. In this study, we introduce single-pulse femtosecond laser sheet-compressed ultrafast photography (fsLS-CUP), an ultrafast imaging technique specifically designed to shed light on and capture ultrafast dynamics stemming from interactions between femtosecond lasers and nanoparticles in flames in a single-shot. fsLS-CUP enables the first-time real-time billion frames-per-second (Gfps) simultaneous two-dimensional (2D) imaging of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser-induced heating (LIH) that are originated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot particles, respectively. Furthermore, fsLS-CUP provides the real-time spatiotemporal map of femtosecond laser-soot interaction as elastic light scattering (ELS) at an astonishing 250 Gfps. In contrast to existing single-shot ultrafast imaging approaches, which are limited to millions of frames per second only and require multiple laser pulses, our method employs only a single pulse and captures the entire dynamics of laser-induced signals at hundreds of Gfps. Using a single pulse does not change the optical properties of nanoparticles for a following pulse, thus allowing reliable spatiotemporal mapping. Moreover, we found that particle inception and growth are derived from precursors. In essence, as an imaging modality, fsLS-CUP offers ultrafast 2D diagnostics, contributing to the fundamental understanding of nanoparticle's inception and broader applications across different fields, such as material science and biomedical engineering.

Controlling population of the molecular rotational state and the alignment theoretically by tailored femtosecond laser pulse.

Project description:We demonstrate that the population of the molecular rotational state through a stimulated impulsive Raman excitation can be controlled by tailoring the femtosecond laser pulse with a V-style phase modulation. The results show that, by precisely manipulating the modulation parameters, both the odd and even populations of the molecular rotational state can be completely suppressed or reconstructed. Meanwhile, the relative excitation between the odd and even populations can be obtained. Finally, we show that field-free molecular alignment can be controlled due to the modulation of the molecular rotational state populations.

Femtosecond Single-Pulse and Orthogonal Double-Pulse Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS): Femtogram Mass Detection and Chemical Imaging with Micrometer Spatial Resolution.

Project description:Femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS) is employed to detect tiny amounts of mass ablated from macroscopic specimens and to measure chemical images of microstructured samples with high spatial resolution. Frequency-doubled fs-pulses (length 400 fs, wavelength 520 nm) are tightly focused with a Schwarzschild microscope objective to ablate the sample surface. The optical emission of laser-induced plasma (LIP) is collected by the objective and measured with an echelle spectrometer equipped with an intensified charge-coupled device camera. A second fs-laser pulse (1040 nm) in orthogonal beam arrangement is reheating the LIP. The optimization of the experimental setup and measurement parameters enables us to record single-pulse fs-LIBS spectra of 5 nm thin metal layers with an ablated mass per pulse of 100 femtogram (fg) for Cu and 370 fg for Ag films. The orthogonal double-pulse fs-LIBS enhances the recorded emission line intensities (two to three times) and improves the contrast of chemical images in comparison to single-pulse measurements. The size of ablation craters (diameters as small as 1.5 µm) is not increased by the second laser pulse. The combination of minimally invasive sampling by a tightly focused low-energy fs-pulse and of strong enhancement of plasma emission by an orthogonal high-energy fs-pulse appears promising for future LIBS chemical imaging with high spatial resolution and with high spectrochemical sensitivity.
