Cobalt vanadium oxide thin nanoplates: primary electrochemical capacitor application.

ABSTRACT: Co3V2O8 thin nanoplates are firstly described as a kind of electrode material for supercapacitors. More importantly, from electrochemical measurements, the obtained Co3V2O8 nanoplate electrode shows a good specific capacitance (0.5 A g(-1), 739 F g(-1)) and cycling stability (704 F g(-1) retained after 2000 cycles). This study essentially offers a new kind of metal vanadium oxides as electrochemical active material for the development of supercapacitors.

Enhanced Electrochemical performance at high temperature of Cobalt Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites and its application in lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We report a microwave irradiation method for the preparation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based Co3O4 nanocomposites as anodes for lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries. The Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites displayed good electrochemical behavior as anodic materials for li-ion batteries when compared to pure Co3O4. The Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites with low RGO content resulted in stable electrochemical performance with 100% coulombic efficiency at a high current density of 500?mA/g for 50 cycles. The enhanced capacity of the Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites is due to the incorporation of RGO, which resulted in a four times larger surface area than that of Co3O4. This increased surface area could facilitate the absorption of more lithium ions, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. Interestingly, the novelty of this work is that the designed li-ion batteries showed stable electrochemical performance even at a high temperature of 100?°C, which might be useful for rechargeable battery applications in a wide temperature range.

Amorphous Cobalt Vanadium Oxide as a Highly Active Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution.

Project description:The water-splitting reaction provides a promising mechanism to store renewable energies in the form of hydrogen fuel. The oxidation half-reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is a complex four-electron process that constitutes an efficiency bottleneck in water splitting. Here we report a highly active OER catalyst, cobalt vanadium oxide. The catalyst is designed on the basis of a volcano plot of metal-OH bond strength and activity. The catalyst can be synthesized by a facile hydrothermal route. The most active pure-phase material (a-CoVO x ) is X-ray amorphous and provides a 10 mA cm-2 current density at an overpotential of 347 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte when immobilized on a flat substrate. The synthetic method can also be applied to coat a high-surface-area substrate such as nickel foam. On this three-dimensional substrate, the a-CoVO x catalyst is highly active, reaching 10 mA cm-2 at 254 mV overpotential, with a Tafel slope of only 35 mV dec-1. This work demonstrates a-CoVO x as a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution and validates M-OH bond strength as a practical descriptor in OER catalysis.

Two-dimensional single-crystalline mesoporous high-entropy oxide nanoplates for efficient electrochemical biomass upgrading.

Project description:Mesoporous single crystals have received more attention than ever in catalysis-related applications due to their unique structural functions. Despite great efforts, their progress in engineering crystallinity and composition has been remarkably slower than expected. In this manuscript, a template-free strategy is developed to prepare two-dimensional high-entropy oxide (HEO) nanoplates with single-crystallinity and penetrated mesoporosity, which further ensures precise control over high-entropy compositions and crystalline phases. Single-crystalline mesoporous HEOs (SC-MHEOs) disclose high electrocatalytic performance in 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) for efficient biomass upgrading, with remarkable HMF conversion of 99.3% and superior 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) selectivity of 97.7%. Moreover, with nitrate reduction as coupling cathode reaction, SC-MHEO realizes concurrent electrosynthesis of value-added FDCA and ammonia in the two-electrode cell. Our study provides a powerful paradigm for producing a library of novel mesoporous single crystals for important catalysis-related applications, especially in the two-electrode cell.

Direct Deposition of Amorphous Cobalt-Vanadium Mixed Oxide Films for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation.

Project description:Efficiency of water oxidation catalysts in terms of overpotential, current density, and voltage stability over time with facile methods of their fabrication remains a key challenge in developing competent mechanisms of storing energy in the form of green hydrogen fuels. In this work, a rapid one-step aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method is employed to synthesize amorphous and highly active cobalt-vanadium mixed oxide catalysts (CoVOx) directly over fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. Morphological and structural characterizations made by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques revealed the formation of pure-phase amorphous films with a gradual variation of topography as a function of deposition time. Of these films, the most active film (CoVOx-20) was obtained in 20 min deposition, showing a spongy networking of interwoven nanofibers with a homogeneous distribution of 3-4 nm pores, achieving an overpotential of 308 mV at 10 mA/cm2 current density. A much higher current density of 175 mA/cm2 could be achieved just at 380 mV of overpotential with Tafel slope as low as 62 mV/dec for this whole range while exhibiting long-term stability. Mass activity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data, and the estimation of electrochemically active surface area all endorsed this high catalytic performance of CoVOx-20, which is unprecedented for a low-cost, upscalable, and relatively less conductive substrate such as FTO used here. Our findings, thus, not only highlight the benefits of using AACVD in preparing two-dimensional amorphous catalysts but also prove the high efficiency of CoVOx materials thus obtained, as outlined in a plausible reaction mechanism.

Electrodeposition of Manganese-Nickel Oxide Films on a Graphite Sheet for Electrochemical Capacitor Applications.

Project description:Manganese-nickel (Mn-Ni) oxide films were electrodeposited on a graphite sheet in a bath consisting of manganese acetate and nickel chloride, and the structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of these films were investigated. The electrodeposited Mn-Ni oxide films had porous structures covered with nanofibers. The X-ray diffractometer pattern revealed the presence of separate manganese oxide (g-MnO₂) and nickel oxide (NiO) in the films. The electrodeposited Mn-Ni oxide electrode exhibited a specific capacitance of 424 F/g in Na₂SO₄ electrolyte. This electrode maintained 86% of its initial specific capacitance over 2000 cycles of the charge-discharge operation, showing good cycling stability.

Amorphous Vanadium Oxide Thin Films as Stable Performing Cathodes of Lithium and Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Herein, we report additive- and binder-free pristine amorphous vanadium oxide (a-VOx) for Li- and Na-ion battery application. Thin films of a-VOx with a thickness of about 650 nm are grown onto stainless steel substrate from crystalline V2O5 target using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Under varying oxygen partial pressure (pO2) environment of 0, 6, 13 and 30 Pa, films bear O/V atomic ratios 0.76, 2.13, 2.25 and 2.0, respectively. The films deposited at 6‑30 Pa have a more atomic percentage of V5+ than that of V4+ with a tendency of later state increased as pO2 rises. Amorphous VOx films obtained at moderate pO2 levels are found superior to other counterparts for cathode application in Li- and Na-ion batteries with reversible capacities as high as 300 and 164 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C current rate, respectively. At the end of the 100th cycle, 90% capacity retention is noticed in both cases. The observed cycling trend suggests that more is the (V5+) stoichiometric nature of a-VOx better is the electrochemistry.

Simultaneous Electrochemical Deposition of Cobalt Complex and Poly(pyrrole) Thin Films for Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Project description:Supercapacitors are beneficial as energy storage devices and can obtain high capacitance values greater than conventional capacitors and high power densities compared to batteries. However, in order to improve upon the overall cost, energy density, and charge-discharge rates, the electrode material of supercapacitors needs to be fine-tuned with an inexpensive, high conducting source. We prepared a Co(III) complex and polypyrrole (PPy) composite thin films (CoN4-PPy) that was electrochemically deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon working electrode. Cyclic voltammetry studies indicate the superior performance of CoN4-PPy in charge storage in acidic electrolyte compared to alkaline and organic solutions. The CoN4-PPy material generated the highest amount of specific capacitance (up to 721.9 F/g) followed by Co salt and PPy (Co-PPy) material and PPy alone. Cyclic performance studies showed the excellent electrochemical stability of the CoN4-PPy film in the acidic medium. Simply electrochemically depositing an inexpensive Co(III) complex with a high electrically conducting polymer of PPy delivered a superior electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Therefore, the results indicate that novel thin films derived from Co(III) metal complex and PPy can store a large amount of energy and maintain high stability over many cycles, revealing its excellent potential in supercapacitor devices.

Electrochemical Proton Intercalation in Vanadium Pentoxide Thin Films and its Electrochromic Behavior in the near-IR Region.

Project description:This work examines the proton intercalation in vanadium pentoxide (V2 O5 ) thin films and its optical properties in the near-infrared (near-IR) region. Samples were prepared via direct current magnetron sputter deposition and cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the insertion and extraction behavior of protons in V2 O5 in a trifluoroacetic acid containing electrolyte. With the same setup chronopotentiometry was done to intercalate a well-defined number of protons in the Hx V2 O5 system in the range of x=0 and x=1. These films were characterized with optical reflectometry in the near-IR region (between 700 and 1700 nm wavelength) and the refractive index n and extinction coefficient k were determined using Cauchy's dispersion model. The results show a clear correlation between proton concentration and n and k.

Polyelectrolyte-Assisted Dispersions of Reduced Graphite Oxide Nanoplates in Water and Their Gas-Barrier Application.

Project description:Dispersion of graphene and related materials in water is needed to enable sustainable processing of these 2D materials. In this work, we demonstrate the capability of branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) to stabilize reduced graphite oxide (rGO) dispersions in water. Atomic force microscopy colloidal probe measurements were carried out to investigate the interaction mechanisms between rGO and the polyelectrolytes (PEs). Our results show that for positive PEs, the interaction appears electrostatic, originating from the weak negative charge of graphene in water. For negative PEs, however, van der Waals forces may result in the formation of a PE shell on rGO. The PE-stabilized rGO dispersions were then used for the preparation of coatings to enhance gas barrier properties of polyethylene terephthalate films using the layer-by-layer self-assembly. Ten bilayers of rGOBPEI/rGOPAA resulted in coatings with excellent barrier properties as demonstrated by oxygen transmission rates below detection limits [<0.005 cm3/(m2 day atm)]. The observed excellent performance is ascribed to both the high density of the deposited coating and its efficient stratification. These results can enable the design of highly efficient gas barrier solutions for demanding applications, including oxygen-sensitive pharmaceutical products or flexible electronic devices.

Local degradation pathways in lithium-rich manganese-nickel-cobalt-oxide epitaxial thin films.

Project description:The electrochemical performance and microstructure of positive electrodes are intimately linked. As such, developing batteries resistance to capacity and voltage fade requires understanding these underlying structure-properties relationships and their evolution with operation. Epitaxial films of a Li-rich manganese-nickel- cobalt oxide cathode material were deposited on (100) and (111) orientated SrRuO3/SrTiO3 substrates. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy tracked the response of these positive electrode materials, while the microstructure of the pristine and cycled films was characterized using transmission electron microscopy. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy identifies compositional fluctuations in as-deposited films. Phase transformations and dissolution were observed after electrochemical testing. There is a correlation between both local composition and substrate orientation (i.e., surface faceting) and what degradation pathways are active. Regions with comparatively higher concentrations of Ni and Co were more resistant to dissolution and unfavorable phase transformations than those with relatively more Mn. As such, a global composition metric may not be an accurate predictor of degradation and performance. Rather possessing the synthetic ability to engineer the chemical profile as well as characterizing it, pose a challenge and opportunity.
