Crystal structure of [NiHg(SCN)4(CH3OH)2] n.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, catena-poly[[bis-(methanol-?O)nickel(II)]-di-?-thio-cyanato-?(4) N:S-mercurate(II)-di-?-thio-cyanato-?(4) N:S], was obtained from a gel-growth method using tetra-meth-oxy-silane as gelling agent. The crystal structure is composed of rather regular HgS4 tetra-hedra (point group symmetry .2.) and trans-NiN4O2 octa-hedra (point group symmetry 2..) that are linked through thio-cyanato bridges into a three-dimensional framework. The methanol mol-ecules coordinate via the O atom to the Ni(2+) cations and point into the voids of this arrangement while a weak O-H?S hydrogen bond to an adjacent S atom stabilizes it.

Project description:Di-?-thio-cyanato-bis-[diamminesilver(I)], [Ag2(?-SCN)2(NH3)4], was synthesized by the reaction of AgSCN with anhydrous liquid ammonia. In the binuclear mol-ecule, the Ag(I) atom is coordinated by two ammine ligands and the S atom of one thio-cyanate ligand. Two of these [Ag(SCN)(NH3)2] units are bridged by the S atoms of the thio-cyanate anions at longer distances, leading to a dimer with point group symmetry C 2. The distance between the Ag(I) atoms in the dimer is at 3.0927?(6)?Å within the range of argentophilic inter-actions. The crystal structure displays N-H?N and N-H?S hydrogen-bonding inter-actions that build up a three-dimensional network.

Crystal structure of K[Hg(SCN)3] - a redetermination.

Project description:The crystal structure of the room-temperature modification of K[Hg(SCN)3], potassium tri-thio-cyanato-mercurate(II), was redetermined based on modern CCD data. In comparison with the previous report [Zhdanov & Sanadze (1952 ▶). Zh. Fiz. Khim. 26, 469-478], reliability factors, standard deviations of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates, as well as anisotropic displacement parameters, were revealed for all atoms. The higher precision and accuracy of the model is, for example, reflected by the Hg-S bond lengths of 2.3954 (11), 2.4481 (8) and 2.7653 (6) Å in comparison with values of 2.24, 2.43 and 2.77 Å. All atoms in the crystal structure are located on mirror planes. The Hg(2+) cation is surrounded by four S atoms in a seesaw shape [S-Hg-S angles range from 94.65 (2) to 154.06 (3)°]. The HgS4 polyhedra share a common S atom, building up chains extending parallel to [010]. All S atoms of the resulting (1) ∞[HgS2/1S2/2] chains are also part of SCN(-) anions that link these chains with the K(+) cations into a three-dimensional network. The K-N bond lengths of the distorted KN7 polyhedra lie between 2.926 (2) and 3.051 (3) Å.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of K<sub>2</sub>Hg(SCN)<sub>4</sub>.

Project description:Single crystals of K2Hg(SCN)4 [dipotassium tetra-thio-cyanato-mercurate(II)] were grown from aqueous solutions of potassium thio-cyanate and mercury(II) thio-cyanate and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In comparison with the previously reported structure model [Zvonkova (1952 ?). Zh. Fiz. Khim. 26, 1798-1803], all atoms in the crystal structure were located, with lattice parameters and fractional coordinates determined to a much higher precision. In the (crystal) structure, the HgII atom is located on a twofold rotation axis and is coordinated in the form of a distorted tetra-hedron by four S atoms of the thio-cyanate anions. The K+ cation shows a coordination number of eight.

SiO and CH3OH mega-masers in NGC 1068.

Project description:Maser is an acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation; in astronomy mega-masers are masers in galaxies that are ≥ 10(6) times more luminous than typical galactic maser sources. Observational studies of mega-masers can help us to understand their origins and characteristics. More importantly, mega-masers can be used as diagnostic tracers to probe the physical properties of their parent galaxies. Since the late 1970s, only three types of molecules have been found to form mega-masers: H2O, OH and H2CO. Here we report the detection of both SiO and CH3OH mega-masers near the centre of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at millimetre wavelengths, obtained using the IRAM 30-m telescope. We argue that the SiO mega-maser originated from the nuclear disk and the CH3OH mega-maser originated from shock fronts. High-resolution observations in the future will enable us to investigate AGN feedback and determine the masses of central supermassive black holes in such galaxies.

Structural evidence for the order of preference of inorganic substrates in mammalian heme peroxidases: crystal structure of the complex of lactoperoxidase with four inorganic substrates, SCN, I, Br and Cl.

Project description:Lactoperoxidase (LPO) is a member of the family of mammalian heme peroxidases. It catalyzes the oxidation of halides and pseudohalides in presence of hydrogen peroxide. LPO has been co-crystallized with inorganic substrates, SCN(-), I(-), Br(-) and Cl(-). The structure determination of the complex of LPO with above four substrates showed that all of them occupied distinct positions in the substrate binding site on the distal heme side. The bound substrate ions were separated from each other by one or more water molecules. The heme iron is coordinated to His-351 N(ϵ2) on the proximal side while it is coordinated to conserved water molecule W-1 on the distal heme side. W-1 is hydrogen bonded to Br(-) ion which is followed by Cl(-) ion with a hydrogen bonded water molecule W-5' between them. Next to Cl(-) ion is a hydrogen bonded water molecule W-7' which in turn is hydrogen bonded to W-8' and N atom of SCN(-). W-80 is hydrogen bonded to W-9' which is hydrogen bonded to I(-). SCN(-) ion also interacts directly with Asn-230 and through water molecules with Ser-235 and Phe-254. Therefore, according to the locations of four substrate anions, the order of preference for binding to lactoperoxidase is observed as Br(-) > Cl(-) > SCN(-) > I(-). The positions of anions are further defined in terms of subsites where Br(-) is located in subsite 1, Cl(-) in subsite 2, SCN(-) in subsite 3 and I(-) in subsite 4.

High pressure Raman spectroscopy of H2O-CH3OH mixtures.

Project description:Complex intra-molecular interactions and the hydrogen-bonding network in H2O-volatile mixtures play critical roles in many dynamics processes in physical chemistry, biology, and Earth and planetary sciences. We used high pressure Raman spectroscopy to study the pressure evolution of vibrational frequencies and bonding behavior in H2O-CH3OH mixtures. We found that the presence of low CH3OH content in H2O increases the transition pressure where water crystallizes to ice VI, but does not significantly change the pressure where ice VI transforms to ice VII. Furthermore, the stiffening rates of C-H stretching frequencies dω/dP in CH3OH significantly decrease upon the crystallization of water, and the softening rates of the O-H stretching frequencies of ice VII are suppressed over a narrow pressure range, after which the frequencies of these modes shift with pressure in ways similar to pure CH3OH and ice VII, respectively. Such complex pressure evolution of Raman frequencies along with pronounced variations in Raman intensities of CH3OH within the sample, and the hysteresis of the water-ice VI phase transition suggest pressure-induced segregation of low content CH3OH from ice VII. These findings indicate the significant influence of volatiles on the crystallization of sub-surface ocean and thermal evolution within large icy planets and satellites.

Photo-induced H2 production from a CH3OH-H2O solution at insulator surface.

Project description:In a conventional photocatalytic or photochemical process, either a photocatalyst or a molecule is excited by irradiation light that has energy greater than the forbidden band (i.e., the band gap) of the semiconductor or the transition energy of an excited state of the molecule, respectively, for a reaction to occur. However, in this work, we found that a considerable amount of H2 can be generated from a CH3OH-H2O solution at a quartz surface using light with energy far outside the electronic absorbance range of the CH3OH-H2O solution; this process should not occur in principle via either conventional photocatalysis or a photochemical process. The H2 production was further confirmed using 266 nm and 355 nm lasers as light sources. Our work demonstrates that photo-induced H2 production can occur on insulator surfaces (e.g., quartz), which were commonly believed to be inert, and will shed light on the surface nature of insulators.

Crystal structure of La24Ru11.

Project description:The compound La24Ru11 (tetra-cosa-lanthanum undeca-ruthenium) crystallizes in a Ce24Co11-type structure. The non-centrosymmetric crystal structure (space group P63 mc) contains RuLa6 trigonal prisms, La6 octa-hedra and LaRu4 tetra-hedra and is closely related to that of Ce23Ni7Mg4. This communication highlights the crystal-chemical similarities and points out the differences between the two structures. All of the tested crystals were inversion twins.

Project description:In the title compound [systematic name: cyano-(3-phen-oxy-phen-yl)methyl 2,2,3,3-tetra-methyl-cyclo-propane-carboxyl-ate], C22H23NO3, which is the pyrethroid insecticide fenpropathrin, the dihedral angle between the cyclo-propane ring plane and the carboxyl-ate group plane is 88.25?(11)°. The dihedral angle between the benzene and phenyl rings in the phen-oxy-benzyl group is 82.99?(4)°. In the crystal, C-H?N hydrogen bonds and weak C-H?? inter-actions link adjacent mol-ecules, forming loop chains along the b-axis direction.

A further two C-H?O hydrogen bonds together with weak ?-? inter-actions [ring centroid separation = 3.7584?(12)?Å] further aggregate the structure into a three-dimensional architecture.
