ABSTRACT: The planes of the aromatic rings of the title compound, C16H14O3, make a dihedral angle of 82.52?(8)°. The acetyl group and the phenyl ring make a dihedral angle of 1.65?(1)°. In the crystal, the molecules are linked by C-H?O interactions, generating C(7) chains along the a-axis direction.

The two aromatic rings make a dihedral angle of 76.0?(1)°. The plane of the central -C(=O)-O- group is twisted by 9.4?(2)° out of the plane of the benzoyl ring, and by 83.3?(1)° out of the plane of the phenyl ring. The crystal structure exhibits weak parallel stacking of the benzoyl rings, with an inter-planar distance of 3.65?Å and an offset of 1.84?Å. The methyl group shows orientational disorder.

The bond parameters in 2MP4MBA are similar to those in 3-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (3MP4MBA), 4-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (4MP4MBA) and other aryl benzoates. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings in 2MP4MBA is 73.04?(8)°.

Synthesis and crystal structure of methyl 3-(3-hy-droxy-3-phenyl-prop-2-eno-yl)benzoate.

Project description:The title compound, C17H14O4, was synthesized under mild conditions and characterized by various analytical techniques. Combined NMR and X-ray diffraction data show that the substance exists exclusively in the enol tautomeric form. An intra-molecular ⋯O=C-C=C-OH⋯ hydrogen bond is present in the mol-ecular structure. The analysis of the difference density map disclosed two adjacent positions of a disordered hydrogen atom taking part in this hydrogen bond, indicating the presence of two enol tautomers in the crystal. The enol mol-ecules are assembled through numerous C-H⋯π and π-π as well as weak C(ar-yl)-H⋯O inter-actions, thus forming a dense crystal packing. The obtained substance was also studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
