An organic down-converting material for white-light emission from hybrid LEDs.

ABSTRACT: A novel BODIPY-containing organic small molecule is synthesized and employed as a down-converting layer on a commercial blue light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting hybrid device demonstrates white-light emission under low-current operation, with color coordinates of (0.34, 0.31) and an efficacy of 13.6 lm/W; four times greater than the parent blue LED.

Waste to white light: a sustainable method for converting biohazardous waste to broadband white LEDs.

Project description:The Covid-19 pandemic has generated a lot of non-degradable biohazardous plastic waste across the globe in the form of disposable surgical and N95 masks, gloves, face shields, syringes, bottles and plastic storage containers. In the present work we address this problem by recycling plastic waste to single system white light emitting carbon dots (CDs) using a pyrolytic method. The synthesized CDs have been embedded into a transparent polymer to form a carbon dot phosphor. This CD phosphor has a broad emission bandwidth of 205 nm and is stable against photo degradation for about a year. A white LED with CRI ∼70 and CIE co-ordinates of (0.25, 0.32) using the fabricated CD phosphor is reported. Further our phosphor is scalable and is environmentally sustainable, and will find wide application in next generation artificial lighting systems.

Quantum-dot and organic hybrid tandem light-emitting diodes with multi-functionality of full-color-tunability and white-light-emission.

Project description:Realizing of full-color quantum-dot LED display remains a challenge because of the poor stability of the blue quantum-dot and the immature inkjet-printing color patterning technology. Here, we develop a multifunctional tandem LED by stacking a yellow quantum-dot LED with a blue organic LED using an indium-zinc oxide intermediate connecting electrode. Under parallel connection and alternate-current driving, the tandem LED is full-color-tunable, which can emit red, green and blue primary colors as well as arbitrary colors that cover a 63% National Television System Committee color triangle. Under series connection and direct current driving, the tandem LED can emit efficient white light with a high brightness of 107000?cd?m-2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 26.02%. The demonstrated hybrid tandem LED, with multi-functionality of full-color-tunability and white light-emission, could find potential applications in both full-color-display and solid-state-lighting.

Study of the Distribution of Radiative Defects and Reabsorption of the UV in ZnO Nanorods-Organic Hybrid White Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

Project description:In this study, the low temperature aqueous chemical growth (ACG) method was employed to synthesized ZnO nanorods to process-organic hybrid white light emitting diodes (LEDs) on glass substrate. Electroluminescence spectra of the hybrid white LEDs demonstrate the combination of emission bands arising from radiative recombination of the organic and ZnO nanorods (NRs). Depth resolved luminescence was used for probing the nature and spatial distribution of radiative defects, especially to study the re-absorption of ultraviolet (UV) in this hybrid white LEDs structure. At room temperature the cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra intensity of the deep band emission (DBE) is increased with the increase of the electron beam penetration depth due to the increase of defect concentration at the ZnO NRs/Polyfluorene (PFO) interface and probably due to internal absorption of the UV. A strong dependency between the intensity ratio of the UV to the DBE bands and the spatial distribution of the radiative defects in ZnO NRs has been found. The comparison of the CL spectra from the PFO and the ZnO NRs demonstrate that PFO has a very weak violet-blue emission band, which confirms that most of the white emission components originate from the ZnO NRs.

White Light Emission from a Simple Mixture of Fluorescent Organic Compounds.

Project description:Three fluorescent organic compounds-furocoumarin (FC), dansyl aniline (DA), and 7-hydroxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid (CC)-are mixed to produce almost pure white light emission (WLE). This novel mixture is immobilised in silica aerogel and applied as a coating to a UV LED to demonstrate its applicability as a low-cost, organic coating for WLE via simultaneous emission. In ethanol solution and when immobilised in silica aerogel, the mixture exhibits a Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity index of (0.27, 0.33). It was observed that a broadband and simultaneous emission involving coumarin carboxylic acid, furocoumarin and dansyl aniline played a vital role in obtaining a CIE index close to that of pure white light.

Multiple yet switchable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with white-light emission.

Project description:The development of new strategies to construct on-demand porous lattice frameworks from simple motifs is desirable. However, mitigating complexity while combing multiplicity and reversibility in the porous architectures is a challenging task. Herein, based on the synergy of dynamic intermolecular interactions and flexible molecular conformation of a simple cyano-modified tetraphenylethylene tecton, eleven kinetic-stable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with various shapes and two thermo-stable non-porous structures with rare perpendicular conformation are obtained. Multimode reversible structural transformations along with visible fluorescence output between porous and non-porous or between different porous forms is realized under different external stimuli. Furthermore, the collaborative of flexible framework and soft long-chain guests facilitate the relaxation from intrinsic blue emission to yellow emission in the excited state, which represents a strategy for generating white-light emission. The dynamic intermolecular interactions, facilitated by flexible molecular conformation and soft guests, diversifies the strategies of construction of versatile smart molecular frameworks.

Polarized white light from hybrid organic/III-nitrides grating structures.

Project description:Highly polarised white light emission from a hybrid organic/inorganic device has been achieved. The hybrid devices are fabricated by means of combining blue InGaN-based multiple quantum wells (MQWs) with a one-dimensional (1D) grating structure and down-conversion F8BT yellow light emitting polymer. The 1D grating structure converts the blue emission from unpolarised to highly polarised; Highly polarised yellow emission has been achieved from the F8BT polymer filled and aligned along the periodic nano-channels of the grating structure as a result of enhanced nano-confinement. Optical polarization measurements show that our device demonstrates a polarization degree of up to 43% for the smallest nano-channel width. Furthermore, the hybrid device with such a grating structure allows us to achieve an optimum relative orientation between the dipoles in the donor (i.e., InGaN/GaN MQWs) and the diploes in the acceptor (i.e., the F8BT), maximizing the efficiency of non-radiative energy transfer (NRET) between the donor and the acceptor. Time-resolved micro photoluminescence measurements show a 2.5 times enhancement in the NRET efficiency, giving a maximal NRET efficiency of 90%. It is worth highlighting that the approach developed paves the way for the fabrication of highly polarized white light emitters.

Regulation of Singlet and Triplet Excitons in a Single Emission Layer: Efficient Fluorescent/Phosphorescent Hybrid White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Two efficient fluorescent molecules, viz., (E)-2-(2-4-(1-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-H-imidazole-2-yl)-[1,1-biphenyl]-4-yl)vinyl-1-yl(naphthalene-1-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (DDIBNPPI) and (E)-4-(2-(2-(-4'-1(2,3-dihyderobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole-2-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)vinyl)-1H-phenanthr[9,10-d]imidazole-1-yl)-1-napthronitrile (DDIBPPIN), were designed and synthesized. DDIBNPPI and DDIBPPIN were obtained by rupturing the covalent bond of phenanthrimidazole core to prevent aggregation-induced quenching. In DDIBPPIN, naphthonitrile group was incorporated into azomethine nitrogen of phenanthrimidazole to enhance charge-transfer ability. The DDIBPPIN/CBP:DDIBPPIN-based device shows blue emission with ηc (current efficiency) of 4.91/4.10 cd/A, ηp (power efficiency) of 4.56/3.84 lm/W, and ηex (external quantum efficiency) of 5.11/5.96%. The ηs (exciton utilization efficiency) values of DDIPNPPI and DDIBPPIN are of 27.0 and 30.3%, respectively. The DDIPNPPI and DDIBPPIN materials employed as a host to fabricate green and red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. The red/white devices (with 0.4% dopant concentration) with DDIBPPIN:Ir(MDQ)2(acac) exhibit maximum L of 69889/26319 cd/m2, ηex of 19.6/16.6%, ηc of 34.6/35.6 cd/A, and ηp of 35.8/36.6 lm/W. The device with DDIBPPIN:Ir(ppy)3/DDIPNPPI:Ir(ppy)3 exhibits green emission [Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (0.30,0.60)/(0.30,0.60)] with maximum L of 69906/69482 cd/m2, ηex of 17.9/17.0%, ηc of 59.8/58.6 cd/A, and ηp of 63.6/61.3 lm/W. The white device using DDIBPPI:Ir(ppy)3 (with 0.4% dopant concentration) exhibits maximum L of 22152 cd/m2, ηex of 15.8%, ηc of 31.4 cd/A, and ηp of 36.1 lm/W.

Converting an Organic Light-Emitting Diode from Blue to White with Bragg Modes.

Project description:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been established as versatile light sources that allow for easy integration in large-area surfaces and flexible substrates. In addition, the low fabrication cost of OLEDs renders them particularly attractive as general lighting sources. Current methods for the fabrication of white-light OLEDs rely on the combination of multiple organic emitters and/or the incorporation of multiple cavity modes in a thick active medium. These architectures introduce formidable challenges in both device design and performance improvements, namely, the decrease of efficiency with increasing brightness (efficiency roll-off) and short operational lifetime. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, white-light generation in an OLED consisting of a sub-100 nm thick blue single-emissive layer coupled to the photonic Bragg modes of a dielectric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). We show that the Bragg modes, although primarily located inside the DBR stack, can significantly overlap with the emissive layer, thus efficiently enhancing emission and outcoupling of photons at selected wavelengths across the entire visible light spectrum. Moreover, we show that color temperature can be tuned by the DBR parameters, offering great versatility in the optimization of white-light emission spectra.

One-dimensional organic lead halide perovskites with efficient bluish white-light emission.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites, an emerging class of solution processable photoactive materials, welcome a new member with a one-dimensional structure. Herein we report the synthesis, crystal structure and photophysical properties of one-dimensional organic lead bromide perovskites, C4N2H14PbBr4, in which the edge sharing octahedral lead bromide chains [PbBr4?2-]? are surrounded by the organic cations C4N2H14?2+ to form the bulk assembly of core-shell quantum wires. This unique one-dimensional structure enables strong quantum confinement with the formation of self-trapped excited states that give efficient bluish white-light emissions with photoluminescence quantum efficiencies of approximately 20% for the bulk single crystals and 12% for the microscale crystals. This work verifies once again that one-dimensional systems are favourable for exciton self-trapping to produce highly efficient below-gap broadband luminescence, and opens up a new route towards superior light emitters based on bulk quantum materials.

Energy down converting organic fluorophore functionalized mesoporous silica hybrids for monolith-coated light emitting diodes.

Project description:The covalent attachment of organic fluorophores in mesoporous silica matrices for usage as energy down converting phosphors without employing inorganic transition or rare earth metals is reported in this article. Triethoxysilylpropyl-substituted derivatives of the blue emitting perylene, green emitting benzofurazane, and red emitting Nile red were synthesized and applied in the synthesis of mesoporous hybrid materials by postsynthetic grafting to commercially available MCM-41. These individually dye-functionalized hybrid materials are mixed in variable ratios to furnish a powder capable of emitting white light with CIE chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.33, y = 0.33 and an external quantum yield of 4.6% upon irradiation at 410 nm. Furthermore, as a proof of concept two different device setups of commercially available UV light emitting diodes, are coated with silica monoliths containing the three triethoxysilylpropyl-substituted fluorophore derivatives. These coatings are able to convert the emitted UV light into light with correlated color temperatures of very cold white (41100 K, 10700 K) as well as a greenish white emission with correlated color temperatures of about 5500 K.
