Controlling spin-dependent tunneling by bandgap tuning in epitaxial rocksalt MgZnO films.

ABSTRACT: Widespread application of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) for information storage has so far been limited by the complicated interplay between tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio and the product of resistance and junction area (RA). An intricate connection exists between TMR ratio, RA value and the bandgap and crystal structure of the barrier, a connection that must be unravelled to optimise device performance and enable further applications to be developed. Here, we demonstrate a novel method to tailor the bandgap of an ultrathin, epitaxial Zn-doped MgO tunnel barrier with rocksalt structure. This structure is attractive due to its good Δ1 spin filtering effect, and we show that MTJs based on tunable MgZnO barriers allow effective balancing of TMR ratio and RA value. In this way spin-dependent transport properties can be controlled, a key challenge for the development of spintronic devices.

One-dimensional confinement and width-dependent bandgap formation in epitaxial graphene nanoribbons.

Project description:The ability to define an off state in logic electronics is the key ingredient that is impossible to fulfill using a conventional pristine graphene layer, due to the absence of an electronic bandgap. For years, this property has been the missing element for incorporating graphene into next-generation field effect transistors. In this work, we grow high-quality armchair graphene nanoribbons on the sidewalls of 6H-SiC mesa structures. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal the development of a width-dependent semiconducting gap driven by quantum confinement effects. Furthermore, ARPES demonstrates an ideal one-dimensional electronic behavior that is realized in a graphene-based environment, consisting of well-resolved subbands, dispersing and non-dispersing along and across the ribbons respectively. Our experimental findings, coupled with theoretical tight-binding calculations, set the grounds for a deeper exploration of quantum confinement phenomena and may open intriguing avenues for new low-power electronics.

Strain-Driven Bidirectional Spin Orientation Control in Epitaxial High Entropy Oxide Films.

Project description:High entropy oxides (HEOs), based on the incorporation of multiple-principal cations into the crystal lattice, offer the possibility to explore previously inaccessible oxide compositions and unconventional properties. Here it is demonstrated that despite the chemical complexity of HEOs external stimuli, such as epitaxial strain, can selectively stabilize certain magneto-electronic states. Epitaxial (Co0.2 Cr0.2 Fe0.2 Mn0.2 Ni0.2 )3 O4 -HEO thin films are grown in three different strain states: tensile, compressive, and relaxed. A unique coexistence of rocksalt and spinel-HEO phases, which are fully coherent with no detectable chemical segregation, is revealed by transmission electron microscopy. This dual-phase coexistence appears as a universal phenomenon in (Co0.2 Cr0.2 Fe0.2 Mn0.2 Ni0.2 )3 O4 epitaxial films. Prominent changes in the magnetic anisotropy and domain structure highlight the strain-induced bidirectional control of magnetic properties in HEOs. When the films are relaxed, their magnetization behavior is isotropic, similar to that of bulk materials. However, under tensile strain, the hardness of the out-of-plane (OOP) axis increases significantly. On the other hand, compressive straining results in an easy OOP magnetization and a maze-like magnetic domain structure, indicating the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Generally, this study emphasizes the adaptability of the high entropy design strategy, which, when combined with coherent strain engineering, opens additional prospects for fine-tuning properties in oxides.

Large lattice distortions and size-dependent bandgap modulation in epitaxial halide perovskite nanowires.

Project description:Metal-halide perovskites have been shown to be remarkable and promising optoelectronic materials. However, despite ongoing research from multiple perspectives, some fundamental questions regarding their optoelectronic properties remain controversial. One reason is the high-variance of data collected from, often unstable, polycrystalline thin films. Here we use ordered arrays of stable, single-crystal cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanowires grown by surface-guided chemical vapor deposition to study fundamental properties of these semiconductors in a one-dimensional model system. Specifically, we uncover the origin of an unusually large size-dependent luminescence emission spectral blue-shift. Using multiple spatially resolved spectroscopy techniques, we establish that bandgap modulation causes the emission shift, and by correlation with state-of-the-art electron microscopy methods, we reveal its origin in substantial and uniform lattice rotations due to heteroepitaxial strain and lattice relaxation. Understanding strain and its effect on the optoelectronic properties of these dynamic materials, from the atomic scale up, is essential to evaluate their performance limits and fundamentals of charge carrier dynamics.

Spin State Disproportionation in Insulating Ferromagnetic LaCoO<sub>3</sub> Epitaxial Thin Films.

Project description:The origin of insulating ferromagnetism in epitaxial LaCoO3 films under tensile strain remains elusive despite extensive research efforts are devoted. Surprisingly, the spin state of its Co ions, the main parameter of its ferromagnetism, is still to be determined. Here, the spin state in epitaxial LaCoO3 thin films is systematically investigated to clarify the mechanism of strain-induced ferromagnetism using element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy and dichroism. Combining with the configuration interaction cluster calculations, it is unambiguously demonstrated that Co3+ in LaCoO3 films under compressive strain (on LaAlO3 substrate) is practically a low-spin state, whereas Co3+ in LaCoO3 films under tensile strain (on SrTiO3 substrate) have mixed high-spin and low-spin states with a ratio close to 1:3. From the identification of this spin state ratio, it is inferred that the dark strips observed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy indicate the position of Co3+ high-spin state, i.e., an observation of a spin state disproportionation in tensile-strained LaCoO3 films. This consequently explains the nature of ferromagnetism in LaCoO3 films. The study highlights the importance of spin state degrees of freedom, along with thin-film strain engineering, in creating new physical properties that do not exist in bulk materials.

Spin-Dependent Ionization of Chiral Molecular Films.

Project description:Spin selectivity in photo-emission from ferromagnetic substrates functionalized with chiral organic films was analyzed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy at room temperature. Using radiation with photon energy greater than the ionization potential of the adsorbed molecules, photoelectrons were collected that originated from both underlying ferromagnetic substrates and the organic films, with kinetic energies in the range of ca. 0-18 eV. We investigated chiral organic films composed of self-assembled monolayers of α-helical peptides and electrostatically adsorbed films of the protein, bovine serum albumin, with different α-helix and β-sheet contents. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectral widths were found to depend on substrate magnetization orientation and polarization, which we attribute to helicity-dependent molecular ionization cross sections arising from photoelectron impact, possibly resulting in spin-polarized holes. These interactions between spin-polarized photoelectrons and chiral molecules are physically manifested as differences in the measured photoionization energies of the chiral molecular films. Substrate magnetization-dependent ionization energies and work function values were deconvoluted using surface charge neutralization techniques, permitting the measurement of relative spin-dependent energy barriers to transmission through chiral organic films.

Temperature-Dependent Surface Anisotropy in (110) Epitaxial Rare Earth Iron Garnet Films.

Project description:Ferrimagnetic oxide thin films are important material platforms for spintronic devices. Films grown on low symmetry orientations such as (110) exhibit complex anisotropy landscapes that can provide insight into novel phenomena such as spin-torque auto-oscillation and spin superfluidity. Using spin-Hall magnetoresistance measurements, the in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OOP) uniaxial anisotropy energies are determined for a thickness series (5-50 nm) of europium iron garnet (EuIG) and thulium iron garnet (TmIG) films epitaxially grown on a gadolinium gallium substrate with (110) orientation and capped with Pt. Pt/EuIG/GGG exhibits an (001) easy plane of magnetization perpendicular to the substrate, whereas Pt/TmIG/GGG exhibits an (001) hard plane of magnetization perpendicular to the substrate with an IP easy axis. Both IP and OOP surface anisotropy energies comparable in magnitude to the bulk anisotropy are observed. The temperature dependence of the surface anisotropies is consistent with first-order predictions of a simplified Néel surface anisotropy model. By taking advantage of the thickness and temperature dependence demonstrated in these ferrimagnetic oxides grown on the low symmetry (110) orientations, the complex anisotropy landscapes can be tuned to act as a platform to explore rich spin textures and dynamics.

Orientation-dependent structural and photocatalytic properties of LaCoO3 epitaxial nano-thin films.

Project description:LaCoO3 epitaxial films were grown on (100), (110) and (111) oriented LaAlO3 substrates by the polymer-assisted deposition method. Crystal structure measurement and cross-section observation indicate that all the LaCoO3 films are epitaxially grown in accordance with the orientation of LaAlO3 substrates, with biaxial compressive strain in the ab plane. Owing to the different strain directions of CoO6 octahedron, the mean Co-O bond length increases by different amounts in (100), (110) and (111) oriented films compared with that of bulk LaCoO3, and the (100) oriented LaCoO3 has the largest increase. Photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange indicates that the order of photocatalytic activity of the three oriented films is (100) > (111) > (110). Combined with analysis of electronic nature and band structure for LaCoO3 films, it is found that the change of the photocatalytic activity is closely related to the crystal field splitting energy of Co3+ and Co-O binding energy. The increase in the mean Co-O bond length will decrease the crystal field splitting energy of Co3+ and Co-O binding energy and further reduce the value of band gap energy, thus improving the photocatalytic activity. This may also provide a clue for expanding the visible-light-induced photocatalytic application of LaCoO3.

Tuning electromagnetic properties of SrRuO<sub>3</sub> epitaxial thin films via atomic control of cation vacancies.

Project description:Elemental defect in transition metal oxides is an important and intriguing subject that result in modifications in variety of physical properties including atomic and electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties. Understanding the formation of elemental vacancies and their influence on different physical properties is essential in studying the complex oxide thin films. In this study, we investigated the physical properties of epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films by systematically manipulating cation and/or oxygen vacancies, via changing the oxygen partial pressure (P(O2)) during the pulsed laser epitaxy (PLE) growth. Ru vacancies in the low-P(O2)-grown SrRuO3 thin films induce lattice expansion with the suppression of the ferromagnetic T C down to ~120 K. Sr vacancies also disturb the ferromagnetic ordering, even though Sr is not a magnetic element. Our results indicate that both A and B cation vacancies in an ABO3 perovskite can be systematically engineered via PLE, and the structural, electrical, and magnetic properties can be tailored accordingly.

Controlling Crystal Orientation in Films of Conjugated Polymers by Tuning the Surface Energy.

Project description:It has been a long-term goal to understand the molecular orientation in films of conjugated polymers, which is crucial to their efficient exploitation. Here, we show that the surface energies determine the crystal orientation in films of model conjugated polymers, substituted polythiophenes crystallized on substrates. We systematically increase the surface energy of edge-on crystals formed at the vacuum interface by attaching polar groups to the ends of the polymer side chains. This suppresses crystallization at the vacuum interface, resulting in a uniform face-on crystal orientation induced by the graphene substrate in polythiophene films as thick as 200 nm, which is relevant for devices. Surprisingly, face-on crystal orientation is attained in the modified polythiophenes crystallized even on amorphous surfaces. Furthermore, for the samples with still competing interfacial interactions, the crystal orientation can be switched in the same sample, depending on the crystallization conditions. Thus, we report a fundamental understanding and control of the equilibrium crystal orientation in films of conjugated polymers.

Synthesis of epitaxial LuN films.

Project description:Epitaxy of rare-earth nitride films are crucial for studying their physical properties and offer significant potential for applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. However, synthesizing single-crystalline LuN presents significant challenges, leading to a limited understanding of its properties. In this study, we successfully achieved the epitaxial growth of (001)-oriented LuN films on YAlO3 (110) substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering epitaxy. Electrical transport measurement at low temperatures reveals that the LuN film exhibits semiconducting behavior between 300 K and 2 K, with an activation energy of approximately 0.01 eV. Notably, negative magnetoresistance was observed below 12 K, which can result from the defects and magnetic impurities in LuN films. Our results uncover the electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial LuN films.
