Review of Afrotropical Figitinae (Figitidae, Cynipoidea, Hymenoptera) with the first records of Neralsia and Lonchidia for the region.

ABSTRACT: The cynipoid subfamily Figitinae is poorly represented in the Afrotropical region with two genera (Figites Latreille and Xyalophora Kieffer) and six species currently known. Here we record an additional two genera (Neralsia Cameron and Lonchidia Thomson) for the region and describe three new species: Neralsiahaddocki sp. n.; Xyalophoratedjoansi sp. n.; Xyalophoratintini sp. n. Benoit's species described in 1956 are synonymized under Figitesaciculatus (Benoit, 1956): Figiteseffossus syn. n.; Figitesfavonius syn. n.; Figitesfurvus syn. n.; Figitesfraudator syn. n. Identification keys to the figitine genera and species occurring in the Afrotropical region are provided. Afrotropical cynipoidea (hymenoptera).

Project description:The Afrotropical Cynipoidea are represented by 306 described species and 54 genera in four families: Cynipidae, Figitidae, Liopteridae and Ibaliidae, the latter represented by a single introduced species. Seven of these genera are only represented by undescribed species in the region. Seven new genus-level synonymies, one genus resurrected from synonymy, 54 new combinations, one combination reinstated, and one new replacement name are presented. We provide identification keys to the families, subfamilies and genera of cynipoid wasps occurring in the Afrotropical region (Africa south of the Sahara, including Madagascar and southern Arabian Peninsula). Online interactive Lucid Phoenix and Lucid matrix keys are available at: http://www.waspweb.org/Cynipoidea/Keys/index.htm. An overview of the biology and checklists of species for each genus are provided. This paper constitutes the first contributory chapter to the book on Afrotropical Hymenoptera.

Keys to world Charipinae (Hymenoptera, Cynipoidea, Figitidae).

Project description:Eight genera of Charipinae are defined, keyed out, and illustrated. Keys for all charipine species within each valid genus, including Alloxysta, Apocharips, Dilyta, Phaenoglyphis, and Thoreauana, are presented, except for Dilapothor, Lobopterocharips, and Lytoxysta, which are monotypic. Figures are provided to show the diagnostic morphological features as used in the keys.

Revision of the afrotropical oberthuerellinae (cynipoidea, liopteridae).

Project description:The Afrotropical Oberthuerellinae are revised, and new dichotomous and multi-entry keys to the species of Oberthuerella, Tessmannella, and Xenocynips are provided. All previously described species in these genera are redescribed; descriptions are augmented by color images of the holotype for each species. The following 11 species are described as new: Oberthuerella cyclopia Buffington & van Noort; Oberthuerella eschara Buffington & van Noort; Oberthuerella kibalensis van Noort & Buffington; Oberthuerella pardolatus Buffington & van Noort; Oberthuerella sharkeyi Buffington & van Noort; Oberthuerella simba Buffington & van Noort; Tessmannella copelandi Buffington & van Noort; Tessmannella kiplingi Buffington & van Noort; Tessmannella roberti Buffington & van Noort; Xenocynips rhothion Buffington & van Noort; and Xenocynips ronquisti Buffington & van Noort. Systematics of Australian Thrasorinae (Hymenoptera, Cynipoidea, Figitidae) with descriptions of Mikeiinae, new subfamily, two new genera, and three new species.

Project description:The Australian Thrasorinae are revised and Mikeius is transferred to Mikeiinae Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, subfam. n., and Mikeius clavatus Pujade-Villar & Restrepo-Ortiz, sp. n., is described. Two new genera of Thrasorinae are erected: Cicatrix Paretas-Martínez, gen. n., including Cicatrix pilosiscutum(Girault), comb. n. from Amblynotus, Cicatrix schauffi (Buffington), comb. n. from Mikeius, and Cicatrix neumannoides Paretas-Martínez & Restrepo-Ortiz, sp. n.; and Palmiriella Pujade-Villar & Paretas-Martínez, gen. n., including Palmiriella neumanni (Buffington), comb. n. from Mikeius, Thrasorus rieki Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, sp. n., is also described. A phylogenetic analysis of 176 morphological and biological characters, including all these new taxa and all genera previously included in Thrasorinae, was conducted. All subfamilies were recovered as monophyletic, with the following relationships: Parnipinae (Euceroptrinae (Mikeiinae (Plectocynipinae (Thrasorinae)))). A worldwide key to the subfamilies of Figitidae is provided that includes the new subfamily, as well as a key to genera Thrasorinae.

Project description:Fiorianteon sulcatumsp. n. is described from Fianarantsoa Province (Madagascar). It is the first species of Fiorianteon found in the Afrotropical region. The genus Fiorianteon can be distinguished from the closely related genus Conganteon by the distal part of the stigmal vein, which is as long as, or shorter than the proximal part of the stigmal vein (longer than the proximal part of the vein in Conganteon).

The complete mitochondrial genome of Leptopilina syphax (Hymenoptera: Figitidae).

Project description:Leptopilina syphax (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) is a newly recorded species of parasitic wasp, and it attacks the larval stage of Drosophilidae, mainly the Drosophila species. Few works have been done in the basic study of L. syphax, including the data of mitochondrial genome. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of L. syphax (GeneBank accession number: MT649407) was sequenced using Illumina HiSeq X Ten system. The mitochondrial genome is 15,882bp long and comprises 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 22 transfer RNA genes. Meanwhile, 26 genes are in majority strand, and the remaining 11 genes are in minority strand. The overall base composition is 41.7% for A, 6.0% for G, 13.6% for C, and 38.7% for T, with an A + T content of 80.4%, respectively. We also performed a phylogenetic analysis with other known mitochondrial genomes of some parasitic wasps. The results show that L. syphax is closely related to L. boulardi, which is another Drosophila parasitoid.

One of these, Cryptopimpla Taschenberg, 1863, is a predominately northern hemisphere genus represented by 47 described species of which only one is known from the Afrotropical region. Mitochondrial genome of Trichagalma acutissimae (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Cynipidae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:Trichagalma acutissimae (Monzen) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) is a major pest of Quercus variabilis Blume in the Taihang Mountains in China. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of T. acutissimae. This mitogenome was 16,078 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). The whole mitogenome exhibited heavy AT nucleotide bias (86.2%). Except for nad4L that started with TTG, all other PCGs started with the standard ATN codon. All 13 PCGs terminate with the stop codon TAA. Phylogenetic analysis showed that T. acutissimae got together with Synergus sp. with high support value, indicating the close relationship of these two genus. All five Cynipoidea species constituted a major clade and formed a sister group to Proctotrupoidea and Chalcidoidea.
