Physicochemical properties of surface charge-modified ZnO nanoparticles with different particle sizes.

ABSTRACT: In this study, four types of standardized ZnO nanoparticles were prepared for assessment of their potential biological risk. Powder-phased ZnO nanoparticles with different particle sizes (20 nm and 100 nm) were coated with citrate or L-serine to induce a negative or positive surface charge, respectively. The four types of coated ZnO nanoparticles were subjected to physicochemical evaluation according to the guidelines published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. All four samples had a well crystallized Wurtzite phase, with particle sizes of ∼30 nm and ∼70 nm after coating with organic molecules. The coating agents were determined to have attached to the ZnO surfaces through either electrostatic interaction or partial coordination bonding. Electrokinetic measurements showed that the surface charges of the ZnO nanoparticles were successfully modified to be negative (about -40 mV) or positive (about +25 mV). Although all the four types of ZnO nanoparticles showed some agglomeration when suspended in water according to dynamic light scattering analysis, they had clearly distinguishable particle size and surface charge parameters and well defined physicochemical properties.

Project description:As one means of close-to-nature management, forest gaps have an important impact on the ecological service function of plantations. To improve the current situation of P. massoniana plantations, three different sizes of forest gaps (large gaps, medium gaps and small gaps) were established to observe whether gap setting can improve the soil fertility and plant diversity of forest plantations. The results showed that compared with the control, the soil organic matter content of different soil layers increased significantly in the medium forest gap and large forest gap. The content of soil organic matter in the surface layer of the middle gap had the largest increase (80.64%). Compared with the control, the content of soil-available potassium between different soil layers decreased significantly by 15.93% to 25.80%. The soil hydrolysable nitrogen reached its maximum under the medium gap. Soil moisture showed significant changes among different gap treatments, different soil layers and their interaction, decreasing significantly in large gaps and small gaps but increasing significantly in medium gaps. The soil bulk density decreased significantly compared with the control, and the surface soil reached the minimum in the medium gap. There were different plant species in forest gaps of different sizes, and shrub layer plants were more sensitive to gap size differences than herb layer plants. The plant diversity indices of the shrub layer increased significantly and showed a maximum under the medium gap. The plant diversity of the herb layer showed the opposite trend, and the Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index and Pielou index were significantly lower than those of the control. RDA showed that different gap treatments had significant effects on the distribution of plants under the forest. Soil available potassium, soil moisture and soil bulk density affected the distribution and diversity of plants under the forest, serving as the limiting factors of plant growth. In forest management, if we strictly consider the improvement of plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties, these results suggest that a medium gap should be established in a plantation for natural restoration.

Project description:Purpose: In the last decades, the advancements of nanotechnologies lead to a massive increase of engineered nanoparticles in consumer products, which translates in an increased human and environmental exposure to nanomaterials. For humans, inhalation is considered as the main exposure route to nanomaterials, which is the reason why lung toxicity studies should be considered as a priority. Inhalation studies are often performed in vivo in rodents. Therefore, in vitro models may represent a valid and efficient alternative to predict the acute toxicity effects of inhaled NPs on human health. The model used in this study represents the human alveolar barrier; it is constituted by four different human pulmonary cell lines (EA.hy 296 on the basolateral side; A549, HMC-1 and macrophage-like cells in the apical side). The cells in the apical side were cultivated at the air-liquid-interface (ALI) and they have been exposed to AuNPs with the VitroCell® Cloud System. Results: We describe the effects after 24 hours of exposure to three different gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in order to evaluate the suitability of our model to assess the toxicological effects of particles. The set of PEGylated AuNPs used included spheres (GNPs), rods (GNRs) and stars (GNSs). The exposure did not cause any significant decrease of viability; all the AuNPs caused cytotoxicity and increase of IL-8 levels at the highest dose. The AuNP were up-taken by the cells in the apical side and they also translocated in the basolateral side. Regarding the global transcript, among differentially expressed genes (DEG) were found genes related to the enhancement of immune cells. Conclusion: AuNPs in the used range of concentrations did not cause severe effects on the co-culture, but different effects were observed for the different types of AuNPs supporting the role of the physico-chemical NP parameters in NP-cell interactions. In addition, our model resulted perfectly suitable to investigate the biological effects of particles especially in terms of inflammatory response and translocation.
