The reaction of an iridium PNP complex with parahydrogen facilitates polarisation transfer without chemical change.

ABSTRACT: The short lived pincer complex [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 is shown to be active for signal amplification by reversible exchange. This catalyst formulation enables the efficient transfer of polarization from parahydrogen to be placed into just a single molecule of the hyperpolarisation target, pyridine. When the catalysts (1)H nuclei are replaced by (2)H, increased levels of substrate hyperpolarization result and when the reverse situation is examined the catalyst itself is clearly visible through hyperpolarised signals. The ligand exchange pathways of [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(py)]BF4 that are associated with this process are shown to involve the formation of 16-electron [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2]BF4 and the 18-electron H2 addition product [(C5H3N(CH2P((t)Bu)2)2)Ir(H)2(H2)]BF4.

Creating a hyperpolarised pseudo singlet state through polarisation transfer from parahydrogen under SABRE.

Project description:The creation of magnetic states that have long lifetimes has been the subject of intense investigation, in part because of their potential to survive the time taken to travel from the point of injection in a patient to the point where a clinically diagnostic MRI trace is collected. We show here that it is possible to harness the signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) process to create such states in a hyperpolarised form that improves their detectability in seconds without the need for any chemical change by reference to the model substrate 2-aminothiazole. We achieve this by transferring Zeeman derived polarisation that is 1500 times larger than that normally available at 400 MHz with greater than 90% efficiency into the new state, which in this case has a 27 second lifetime.

Ultrafast Laplace NMR to study metal-ligand interactions in reversible polarisation transfer from parahydrogen.

Project description:Laplace Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) can determine relaxation parameters and diffusion constants, giving valuable information about molecular structure and dynamics. Information about relaxation times (T1 and T2) and the self-diffusion coefficient (D) can be extracted from exponentially decaying NMR signals by performing a Laplace transform, which is a different approach to traditional NMR involving Fourier transform of a free induction decay. Ultrafast Laplace NMR uses spatial encoding to collect the entire data set in just a single scan which provides orders of magnitude time savings. In this work we use ultrafast Laplace NMR D-T2 correlation sequences to measure key relaxation (T2) and diffusion (D) parameters of methanolic solutions containing pyridine. For the first time we combine this technique with the hyperpolarisation technique Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE), which employs an iridium catalyst to reversibly transfer polarisation from parahydrogen, to boost the 1H NMR signals of pyridine by up to 300-fold. We demonstrate use of ultrafast Laplace NMR to monitor changes in pyridine T2 and D associated with ligation to the iridium SABRE catalyst and kinetic isotope exchange reactions. The combined 1440-fold reduction in experiment time and 300-fold 1H NMR signal enhancement allow the determination of pyridine D coefficients and T2 values at 25 mM concentrations in just 3 seconds using SABRE hyperpolarised ultrafast Laplace NMR.

Analysis of chemical exchange in iridium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes using heteronuclear parahydrogen-enhanced NMR.

Project description:The signal amplification by reversible exchange process (SABRE) enhances NMR signals by unlocking hidden polarization in parahydrogen through interactions with to-be-hyperpolarized substrate molecules when both are transiently bound to an Ir-based organometallic catalyst. Recent efforts focus on optimizing polarization transfer from parahydrogen-derived hydride ligands to the substrate in SABRE. However, this requires quantitative information on ligand exchange rates, which common NMR techniques struggle to provide. Here, we introduce an experimental spin order transfer sequence, with readout occurring at 15N nuclei directly interacting with the catalyst. Enhanced 15N NMR signals overcome sensitivity challenges, encoding substrate dissociation rates. This methodology enables robust data fitting to ligand exchange models, yielding substrate dissociation rate constants with higher precision than classical 1D and 2D 1H NMR approaches. This refinement improves the accuracy of key activation enthalpy ΔH‡ and entropy ΔS‡ estimates. Furthermore, the higher chemical shift dispersion provided by enhanced 15N NMR reveals the kinetics of substrate dissociation for acetonitrile and metronidazole, previously inaccessible via 1H NMR due to small chemical shift differences between free and Ir-bound substrates. The presented approach can be successfully applied not only to isotopically enriched substrates but also to compounds with natural abundance of the to-be-hyperpolarized heteronuclei.

Iridium trihydride and tetrahydride complexes and their role in catalytic polarisation transfer from <i>para</i>hydrogen to pyruvate.

Project description:This work details how the unusual iridium tetrahydride [Ir(H)4(IMes)(sulfoxide)]Na and trihydride [Ir(H)3(IMes)(sulfoxide)2] can be formed in a solvent dependent reaction of [IrCl(COD)(IMes)] with sulfoxide (dimethyl or methylphenyl), base, and H2. In the case of dimethyl sulfoxide, the four hydride ligands of the tetrahydride are equivalent, and the IMes and sulfoxide ligands mutually trans. However, for phenyl methyl sulfoxide, this isomer of the tetrahydride forms alongside its cis counterpart where the remarkable symmetry breaking effect of the sulfoxide leads to it presenting four chemically distinct hydride ligands. These products and their ligand arrangements are characterised and the reaction pathways leading to their formation probed using NMR spectroscopy and parahydrogen-hyperpolarised methods. Subsequently, they form as previously unidentified low concentration by-products in the important SABRE-catalysed hyperpolarisation of pyruvate, and their concentration should be minimised for efficient polarisation transfer.

Controlled Interconversion of a Dinuclear Au Species Supported by a Redox-Active Bridging PNP Ligand Facilitates Ligand-to-Gold Electron Transfer.

Project description:Redox non-innocent ligands have recently emerged as interesting tools to obtain new reactivity with a wide variety of metals. However, gold has almost been neglected in this respect. Here, we report mechanistic investigations related to a rare example of ligand-based redox chemistry in the coordination sphere of gold. The dinuclear metal-centered mixed-valent AuI -AuIII complex 1, supported by monoanionic diarylamido-diphosphine ligand PNPPr and with three chlorido ligands overall, undergoes a complex series of reactions upon halide abstraction by silver salt or Lewis acids such as gallium trichloride. Formation of the ultimate AuI -AuI complex 2 requires the intermediacy of AuI -AuI dimers 5 and 7 as well as the unique AuIII -AuIII complex 6, both of which are interconverted in a feedback loop. Finally, unprecedented ortho-selective C-H activation of the redox-active PNP ligand results in the carbazolyldiphosphine derivative PN*PPr via ligand-to-metal two-electron transfer. This work demonstrates that the redox-chemistry of gold may be significantly expanded and modified when using a reactive ligand scaffold.

Activated chemical bonds in nanoporous and amorphous iridium oxides favor low overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:To date, the search for active, selective, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has not ceased and a detailed atomic-level design of the OER catalyst remains an outstanding (if not, compelling) problem. Considerable studies on different surfaces and polymorphs of iridium oxides (with varying stoichiometries and dopants) have emerged over the years, showing much higher OER activity than the conventionally reported rutile-type IrO2. Here, we have considered different metastable nanoporous and amorphous iridium oxides of different chemical stoichiometries. Using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we investigate the (electro)chemical stability, intercalation properties, and electronic structure of these iridium oxides. Using an empirical regression model between the Ir-O bond characteristics and the measured OER overpotentials, we demonstrate how activated Ir-O bonds (and the presence of more electrophilic oxygens) in these less understood polymorphs of iridium oxides can explain their superior OER performance observed in experiments.

Hydrogen Transfer-Mediated Multicomponent Reaction for Direct Synthesis of Quinazolines by a Naphthyridine-Based Iridium Catalyst.

Project description:Selective linkage of renewable alcohols and ammonia into functional products would not only eliminate the prepreparation steps to generate active amino agents but also help in the conservation of our finite fossil carbon resources and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emission. Herein the development of a novel 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,8-naphthyridine-based iridium (III) complex is reported, which exhibits excellent catalytic performance toward a new hydrogen transfer-mediated annulation reaction of 2-nitrobenzylic alcohols with alcohols and ammonia. The catalytic transformation proceeds with the striking features of good substrate and functional group compatibility, high step and atom efficiency, no need for additional reductants, and liberation of H2O as the sole by-product, which endows a new platform for direct access to valuable quinazolines. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the non-coordinated N-atom in the ligand serves as a side arm to significantly promote the condensation process by hydrogen bonding.

Chemical Exchange Reaction Effect on Polarization Transfer Efficiency in SLIC-SABRE.

Project description:Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) is a new and rapidly developing hyperpolarization technique. The recent discovery of Spin-Lock Induced Crossing SABRE (SLIC-SABRE) showed that high field hyperpolarization transfer techniques developed so far were optimized for singlet spin order that does not coincide with the experimentally produced spin state. Here, we investigated the SLIC-SABRE approach and the most advanced quantitative theoretical SABRE model to date. Our goal is to achieve the highest possible polarization with SLIC-SABRE at high field using the standard SABRE system, IrIMes catalyst with pyridine. We demonstrated the accuracy of the SABRE model describing the effects of various physical parameters such as the amplitude and frequency of the radio frequency field, and the effects of chemical parameters such as the exchange rate constants. By fitting the model to the experimental data, the effective life time of the SABRE complex was estimated, as well as the entropy and enthalpy of the complex-dissociation reaction. We show, for the first time, that this SLIC-SABRE model can be useful for the evaluation of the chemical exchange parameters that are very important for the production of highly polarized contrast agents via SABRE.

Lattice atom-bridged chemical bond interface facilitates charge transfer for boosted photoelectric response.

Project description:The construction of chemical bonds at heterojunction interfaces currently presents a promising avenue for enhancing photogenerated carrier interfacial transfer. However, the deliberate modulation of these interfacial chemical bonds remains a significant challenge. In this study, we successfully established a p-n junction composed of atomic-level Pt-doped CeO2 and 2D metalloporphyrins metal-organic framework nanosheets (Pt-CeO2/CuTCPP(Fe)), which enables the realization of photoelectric enhancement by regulating the interfacial Fe-O bond and optimizing the built-in electric field. Atomic-level Pt doping in CeO2 leads to an increased density of oxygen vacancies and lattice mutation, which induces a transition in interfacial Fe-O bonds from adsorbed oxygen (Fe-OA) to lattice oxygen (Fe-OL). This transition changes the interfacial charge flow pathway from Fe-OA-Ce to Fe-OL, effectively reducing the carrier transport distance along the atomic-level charge transport highway. This results in a 2.5-fold enhancement in photoelectric performance compared with the CeO2/CuTCPP(Fe). Furthermore, leveraging the peroxidase-like activity of the p-n junction, we employed this functional heterojunction interface to develop a photoelectrochemical immunoassay for the sensitive detection of prostate-specific antigens.

Change in Tetracene Polymorphism Facilitates Triplet Transfer in Singlet Fission-Sensitized Silicon Solar Cells.

Project description:Singlet fission in tetracene generates two triplet excitons per absorbed photon. If these triplet excitons can be effectively transferred into silicon (Si), then additional photocurrent can be generated from photons above the bandgap of Si. This could alleviate the thermalization loss and increase the efficiency of conventional Si solar cells. Here, we show that a change in the polymorphism of tetracene deposited on Si due to air exposure facilitates triplet transfer from tetracene into Si. Magnetic field-dependent photocurrent measurements confirm that triplet excitons contribute to the photocurrent. The decay of tetracene delayed photoluminescence was used to determine a transfer efficiency of ∼36% into Si. Our study suggests that control over the morphology of tetracene during the deposition will be of great importance to boost the triplet transfer yield further.
