Excitation of multipole plasmons by optical vortex beams.

ABSTRACT: Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been shown to exhibit a strong potential for nanoscale electromagnetic field manipulation beyond the diffraction limit. Particularly dark mode plasmons circumvent radiation loss and store the energy long in time, which raise the prospect of interesting plasmonics applications, for example biochemical sensing and nanoscale lasing. Here we theoretically investigate a method of exciting multipole plasmons, including dark modes, using normally incident light. By performing numerical calculations, we show that multipole plasmons in metal nanodisks can be selectively excited by circularly-polarized optical vortex beams. We study the electromagnetic fields of the beam cross-sections and their correspondence with the excited multipole plasmon modes with respect to spin and orbital angular momenta. The transfer of angular momentum between photons and plasmons is also discussed.

Phase memory of optical vortex beams.

Project description:Optical vortex beams are under considerable scrutiny due to their demonstrated potential for applications ranging from quantum optics to optical communications and from material processing to particle trapping. However, upon interaction with inhomogeneous material systems, their deterministic properties are altered. The way these structured beams are affected by different levels of disturbances is critical for their uses. Here, for the first time, we quantify the degradation of perfect optical vortex beams after their interaction with localized random media. We developed an analytical model that (1) describes how the spatial correlation and the phase variance of disturbance affect the phase distribution across the vortex beams and (2) establishes the regimes of randomness for which the beams maintain the memory of their initial vorticity. Systematic numerical simulations and controlled experiments demonstrate the extent of this memory effect for beams with different vorticity indices.

Ultra-secure optical encryption based on tightly focused perfect optical vortex beams.

Project description:Light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) with inherent mode orthogonality has been suggested as a new way to the optical encryption. However, the dependence of annular intensity profiles on the topological charge complicates nanoscale light-matter interactions and hampers the ultra-secure encryption application. In this paper, we demonstrate ultra-secure image encryption by tightly focusing perfect optical vortex (POV) beams with controllable annular intensity profiles and OAM states. A simple scheme composed of single spatial light modulator to implement Fourier transform of an ideal Bessel mode with both amplitude and phase modulations is proposed to generate radius-controllable POV in tightly focused beams. Such focused POV beams with identical intensity profiles but varied local OAM density are applied to disorder-coupled gold nanorod aggregates to selectively excite electromagnetic hot spots for encoding information through photothermal deformation. As such, ultra-secure image encryption in OAM states of POV beams in combination with different polarizations can be achieved. Our results lay the ground for diverse nanophotonic applications harnessing the OAM division of POV beams.

Multipole Modes Excitation of uncoupled dark Plasmons Resonators based on Frequency Selective Surface at X-band Frequency Regime.

Project description:In this report, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrates that multipole modes could be excited effectively in dark plasmonic resonators without introducing any other bright resonators at microwave range based on a two-dimensional frequency selective surface (FSS) structure. These excited multipole resonances are closely related to the coupling strength between adjacent S-LSPs resonators (the periodicity of the FSS). The modes splitting effects and resonance frequencies of the excited multipole modes are regulated by changing the numbers of grooves and inner disk radius, both of which play significant roles in the excitation of the dark S-LSPs disk resonator at normal incidence. Moreover, the multipole resonances characteristics of dark S-LSPs resonators in the case of oblique incidence are also presented. Observation of such multipole resonances in dark S-LSPs without introducing extra bright resonance at normal/oblique incidence would find more potential applications in microwave and terahertz based sensors, plasmonic resonance devices and metamaterial devices.

On-Axis Optical Trapping with Vortex Beams: The Role of the Multipolar Decomposition.

Project description:Optical trapping is a well-established, decades old technology with applications in several fields of research. The most common scenario deals with particles that tend to be centered on the brightest part of the optical trap. Consequently, the optical forces keep the particle away from the dark zones of the beam. However, this is not the case when a focused doughnut-shaped beam generates on-axis trapping. In this system, the particle is centered on the intensity minima of the laser beam and the bright annular part lies on the periphery of the particle. Researchers have shown great interest in this phenomenon due to its advantage of reducing light interaction with trapped particles and the intriguing increase in the trapping strength. This work presents experimental and theoretical results that extend the analysis of on-axis trapping with light vortex beams. Specifically, in our experiments, we trap micron-sized spherical silica (SiO2) particles in water and we measure, through the power spectrum density method, the trap stiffness constant κ generated by vortex beams with different topological charge orders. The optical forces are calculated from the exact solutions of the electromagnetic fields provided by the generalized Lorentz-Mie theory. We show a remarkable agreement between the theoretical prediction and the experimental measurements of κ. Moreover, our numerical model gives us information about the electromagnetic fields inside the particle, offering valuable insights into the influence of the electromagnetic fields present in the vortex beam trapping scenario.

A simulation-based analysis of optical read-out for electrochemical reactions using composite vortex beams.

Project description:We propose an optical read-out method for extracting faradaic current in electrochemical (EC) reactions and analyze its performance using opto-EC simulations. Our approach utilizes structured electrodes to generate composite optical vortex (COV) beams upon optical illumination. Through opto-EC simulations, we demonstrate that the EC reaction of 10 mM potassium ferricyanide induces a refractive index (RI) change, Δ RI, of approximately 10-4 RI units, leading to the rotation of the COV beam's intensity profile with a peak rotation of 40∘ . This rotation's magnitude is proportional to Δ RI, while the rate correlates with the faradaic current ( If ) density responsible for Δ RI. As the opto-EC information is from bulk Δ RI, it remains unaffected by interfering non-faradaic components at the interface and is advantageous for studying intermediate species and bulk homogeneous reactions. Furthermore, as rotation depends on If density rather than If itself, this method proves beneficial in low If scenarios, such as when employing micro-electrodes to decrease solution resistance or obtain localized EC data. Even in low If density scenarios, like monitoring slow EC reactions, our method enables signal amplification by accumulating rotation over time. This interdisciplinary approach holds promise for advancing EC research and addressing critical challenges across various fields, including energy storage, corrosion protection, environmental remediation, and biomedical sciences.

Multipole plasmons and their disappearance in few-nanometre silver nanoparticles.

Project description:Electron energy-loss spectroscopy can be used for detailed spatial and spectral characterization of optical excitations in metal nanoparticles. In previous electron energy-loss experiments on silver nanoparticles with radii smaller than 20 nm, only the dipolar surface plasmon resonance was assumed to play a role. Here, applying electron energy-loss spectroscopy to individual silver nanoparticles encapsulated in silicon nitride, we observe besides the usual dipole resonance an additional surface plasmon resonance corresponding to higher angular momenta for nanoparticle radii as small as 4 nm. We study the radius and electron beam impact position dependence of both resonances separately. For particles smaller than 4 nm in radius the higher-order surface plasmon mode disappears, in agreement with generalized non-local optical response theory, while the dipole resonance blueshift exceeds our theoretical predictions. Unlike in optical spectra, multipole surface plasmons are important in electron energy-loss spectra even of ultrasmall metallic nanoparticles.

The generation of femtosecond optical vortex beams with megawatt powers directly from a fiber based Mamyshev oscillator.

Project description:Numerous approaches have been developed to generate optical vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) over the past decades, but the direct intracavity generation of such beams with practical output powers in the femtosecond regime still remains a challenge. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate the efficient generation of high-peak-power femtosecond optical vortex pulses from a Mamyshev oscillator (MO) based on few-mode polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs). By employing an appropriate intracavity transverse spatial mode selection technique, ultrafast pulses carrying OAM with selectable topological charge of l = ±1 are successfully generated with an average output power of ∼5.72 W at ∼24.35 MHz repetition rate, corresponding to a single pulse energy of ∼235 nJ. The chirped pulses can be compressed to ∼76 fs outside the cavity, leading to a pulse peak power of ∼2.2 MW. To the best of our knowledge, this is by far the highest pulse energy and peak power for optical vortex pulses ever generated directly from a fiber oscillator. This unprecedented level of performance should be of great interest for a variety of applications including materials processing and imaging.

Achromatic vector vortex beams from a glass cone.

Project description:The reflection of light is governed by the laws first described by Augustin-Jean Fresnel: on internal reflection, light acquires a phase shift, which depends on its polarization direction with respect to the plane of incidence. For a conical reflector, the cylindrical symmetry is echoed in an angular variation of this phase shift, allowing us to create light modes with phase and polarization singularities. Here we observe the phase and polarization profiles of light that is back reflected from a solid glass cone and, in the case of circular input light, discover that not only does the beam contain orbital angular momentum but can trivially be converted to a radially polarized beam. Importantly, the Fresnel coefficients are reasonably stable across the visible spectrum, which we demonstrate by measuring white light polarization profiles. This discovery provides a highly cost-effective technique for the generation of broadband orbital angular momentum and radially polarized beams.

Generation of Subdiffraction Optical Needles by Simultaneously Generating and Focusing Azimuthally Polarized Vortex Beams through Pancharatnam-Berry Metalenses.

Project description:Needle beams have received widespread attention due to their unique characteristics of high intensity, small focal size, and extended depth of focus (DOF). Here, a single-layer all-dielectric metalens based on Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) was used to efficiently generate and focus an azimuthally polarized vortex beam at the same time. Then, additional phase or amplitude modulation was respectively adopted to work with the metalens to produce optical needles. By decorating the PB metalens with the binary optical element (BOE), an optical needle with full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.47 λ and DOF of 3.42 λ could be obtained. By decorating the PB metalens with an annular aperture, an optical needle with long DOF (16.4 λ) and subdiffraction size (0.46 λ) could be obtained. It is expected that our work has potential applications in super-resolution imaging, photolithography, and particle trapping.
