Robust magnetic moments on the basal plane of the graphene sheet effectively induced by OH groups.

ABSTRACT: Inducing robust magnetic moments on the basal plane of the graphene sheet is very difficult, and is one of the greatest challenges in the study of physical chemistry of graphene materials. Theoretical studies predicted that introduction of a kind of sp(3)-type defects formed by OH groups is an effective pathway to achieve this goal [Boukhvalov, D. W. &Katsnelson, M. I. ACS Nano 5, 2440-2446 (2011)]. Here we demonstrate that OH groups can efficiently induce robust magnetic moments on the basal plane of the graphene sheet. We show that the inducing efficiency can reach as high as 217 ?B per 1000 OH groups. More interestingly, the magnetic moments are robust and can survive even at 900°C. Our findings highlight the importance of OH group as an effective sp(3)-type candidate for inducing robust magnetic moments on the basal plane of the graphene sheet.

The edge- and basal-plane-specific electrochemistry of a single-layer graphene sheet.

Project description:Graphene has a unique atom-thick two-dimensional structure and excellent properties, making it attractive for a variety of electrochemical applications, including electrosynthesis, electrochemical sensors or electrocatalysis, and energy conversion and storage. However, the electrochemistry of single-layer graphene has not yet been well understood, possibly due to the technical difficulties in handling individual graphene sheet. Here, we report the electrochemical behavior at single-layer graphene-based electrodes, comparing the basal plane of graphene to its edge. The graphene edge showed 4 orders of magnitude higher specific capacitance, much faster electron transfer rate and stronger electrocatalytic activity than those of graphene basal plane. A convergent diffusion effect was observed at the sub-nanometer thick graphene edge-electrode to accelerate the electrochemical reactions. Coupling with the high conductivity of a high-quality graphene basal plane, graphene edge is an ideal electrode for electrocatalysis and for the storage of capacitive charges.

How are Hydroxyl Groups Localized on a Graphene Sheet?

Project description:Arrangements of hydroxyl groups on graphene sheets were systematically investigated using density functional theory calculations that included van der Waals interactions. Results show that hydroxyl groups tend to gather at para-positions on graphene sheets to generate perfect ring-like hexahydroxyl group adsorption. The close proximity of hydroxyl groups is in good agreement with the experimental separation between unoxidized, aromatic and oxidized, saturated regions in graphene oxide. The orientation of hydrogen atoms in hydroxyl groups creates both O-H···O and O-H···π hydrogen bonds. Calculations also indicated that the binding energy per hydroxyl group follows a logarithmic function with respect to the number of hydroxyl groups. Besides, the opening band gap was observed for several derivatives, and the relationship between the band gap and O/C ratio was found to be nonmonotonic. Analysis of the density of states showed that bands around the Fermi levels of derivatives between graphene and hydroxyl groups are mainly composed of 2p z orbitals of carbon and oxygen atoms.

Inducing Kondo screening of vacancy magnetic moments in graphene with gating and local curvature.

Project description:In normal metals the magnetic moment of impurity-spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature which marks the formation of a cloud of conduction-band electrons that screen the local-moment. In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. What then is the fate of magnetic-moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene? Theory predicts that coupling to the conduction-band electrons will drive a quantum phase transition between a local-moment phase and a Kondo-screened phase. However, attempts to experimentally confirm this prediction and its intriguing consequences, such as electrostatically tunable magnetic-moments, have been elusive. Here we report the observation of Kondo-screening and the quantum phase-transition between screened and unscreened phases of vacancy magnetic moments in graphene. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and numerical renormalization-group calculations we show that this transition enables to control the screening of local moments by tuning the gate voltage and the local curvature of the graphene membrane.

Heptagons in the Basal Plane of Graphene Nanoflakes Analyzed by Simulated X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Project description:The performance of graphene-based electronic devices depends critically on the existence of topological defects such as heptagons. Identifying heptagons at the atomic scale is important to completely understand the electronic properties of these materials. In this study, we report an atomic-scale analysis of graphene nanoflakes with two to eight isolated or connected heptagons, using simulated C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to estimate the XPS profiles depending on the density and the position of the heptagons. The introduction of up to 24% of isolated heptagons shifted the peak position toward high binding energies (284.0 to 284.3 eV), whereas the introduction of up to 39% of connected heptagons shifted the calculated peak position toward low binding energies (284.0 to 283.5 eV). The presence of heptagons also influenced the full width at half-maximum (FWHM). The introduction of 24% of isolated heptagons increased the FWHMs from 1.25 to 1.50 eV. However, the introduction of connected heptagons did not increase the FWHMs above 1.40 eV. The FWHMs increased to 1.40 eV for 19% of connected heptagons, but did not increase further as the percentage of connected heptagons increased to 39%. Based on the calculated results, the XPS profiles of graphene nanoflakes containing heptagons with different densities and positions can be obtained. Our precise identification of heptagons in graphene nanoflakes by XPS lays the groundwork for the analysis of graphene.

Influence from defects of three-dimensional graphene networks on the interface condition between the graphene basal plane and various resins.

Project description:Graphene assisted thermal interface materials (TIMs) attract more and more attention because of their high thermal conductivities. However, how to improve the phonon transport ability at the interface between the graphene basal plane and the matrix is still unclear. In this study, three-dimensional graphene networks (3DGNs) with varying defect densities are fabricated by adjusting the chemical vapor deposition processes, and these specimens are adopted as fillers to modify various resins with different functional groups to reveal the interface contact rule. By optimizing the defect density of the 3DGNs, a synergy between the thermal boundary resistances of the filler and matrix and the high intrinsic thermal conductivity of the filler can be achieved in the resulting TIMs, and the epoxy group from the matrix is found to be the best active group to form a close contact between the defects of the 3DGNs. After that, the thermal performance stability of the resulting TIMs under a high temperature for a long time is detected, and the influence from increased Umklapp scattering is partially offset by the weakened Kapitza scattering. Moreover, the corresponding mechanical properties have been measured to confirm the feasibility of the resulting TIMs for practical application areas.

Mesoscopic Oblique Plane Microscopy via Light-sheet Mirroring.

Project description:Understanding the intricate interplay and inter-connectivity of biological processes across an entire organism is important in various fields of biology, including cardiovascular research, neuroscience, and developmental biology. Here, we present a mesoscopic oblique plane microscope (OPM) that enables whole organism imaging with high speed and subcellular resolution. A microprism underneath the sample enhances the axial resolution and optical sectioning through total internal reflection of the light-sheet. Through rapid refocusing of the light-sheet, the imaging depth is extended up to threefold while keeping the axial resolution constant. Using low magnification objectives with a large field of view, we realize mesoscopic imaging over a volume of 3.7×1.5×1 mm3 with ~2.3 microns lateral and ~9.2 microns axial resolution. Applying the mesoscopic OPM, we demonstrate in vivo and in toto whole organism imaging of the zebrafish vasculature and its endothelial nuclei, and blood flow dynamics at 12 Hz acquisition rate, resulting in a quantitative map of blood flow across the entire organism.

Sulfonylation of RNA 2'-OH groups.

Project description:The nucleophilic reactivity of RNA 2'-OH groups in water has proven broadly useful in probing, labeling, and conjugating RNA. To date, reactions selective to ribose 2'-OH have been limited to bond formation with short-lived carbonyl electrophiles. Here we report that many activated small-molecule sulfonyl species can exhibit extended lifetimes in water and retain 2'-OH reactivity. The data establish favorable aqueous solubility for selected reagents and successful RNA-selective reactions at stoichiometric and superstoichiometric yields, particularly for aryl sulfonyltriazole species. We report that the latter are considerably more stable than most prior carbon electrophiles in aqueous environments and tolerate silica chromatography. Furthermore, an azide-substituted sulfonyltriazole reagent is developed to introduce labels into RNA via click chemistry. In addition to high-yield reactions, we find that RNA sulfonylation can also be performed under conditions that give trace yields necessary for structure mapping. Like acylation, the reaction occurs with selectivity for unpaired nucleotides over those in the duplex structure, and a sulfonate adduct causes reverse transcriptase stops, suggesting potential use in RNA structure analysis. Probing of rRNA is demonstrated in human cells, indicating possible cell permeability. The sulfonyl reagent class enables a new level of control, selectivity, versatility, and ease of preparation for RNA applications.

Multidimensional traction force microscopy reveals out-of-plane rotational moments about focal adhesions.

Project description:Recent methods have revealed that cells on planar substrates exert both shear (in-plane) and normal (out-of-plane) tractions against the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, the location and origin of the normal tractions with respect to the adhesive and cytoskeletal elements of cells have not been elucidated. We developed a high-spatiotemporal-resolution, multidimensional (2.5D) traction force microscopy to measure and model the full 3D nature of cellular forces on planar 2D surfaces. We show that shear tractions are centered under elongated focal adhesions whereas upward and downward normal tractions are detected on distal (toward the cell edge) and proximal (toward the cell body) ends of adhesions, respectively. Together, these forces produce significant rotational moments about focal adhesions in both protruding and retracting peripheral regions. Temporal 2.5D traction force microscopy analysis of migrating and spreading cells shows that these rotational moments are highly dynamic, propagating outward with the leading edge of the cell. Finally, we developed a finite element model to examine how rotational moments could be generated about focal adhesions in a thin lamella. Our model suggests that rotational moments can be generated largely via shear lag transfer to the underlying ECM from actomyosin contractility applied at the intracellular surface of a rigid adhesion of finite thickness. Together, these data demonstrate and probe the origin of a previously unappreciated multidimensional stress profile associated with adhesions and highlight the importance of new approaches to characterize cellular forces.

Ferroelectric Single-Molecule Magnet with Toroidal Magnetic Moments.

Project description:Materials that coexist magnetic and electric properties on the molecular scale in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with peculiar quantum behaviors have promise in molecular electronics and spintronics. Nevertheless, such molecular materials are limited in potentials because their magnetic signal cannot be transformed into an electrical signal through magnetoresistance or Hall effects for their high insulativity. The discovery of an entirely new material, ferroelectric SMMs (FE SMMs) is reported. This FE SMM also shows single-molecule magnetic behaviors, toroidal magnetic moments, and room-temperature ferroelectricity. The toroidal moment is formed by a vortex distribution of magnetic dipoles in triangular Dy3 clusters. The analysis of ac magnetic susceptibility reveals the coexistence of three distinct magnetic relaxation processes at low temperatures. The ferroelectricity is introduced by incorporating polar alcohol molecules in the structure, which is confirmed by the X-ray diffraction and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. Moreover, the dielectric measurements reveal a ferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition around 150 K due to the symmetry change from Pc to Pna21 . The coexistence of toroidal moment and ferroelectricity along with quantum magnetism in the rare-earth single-molecule magnets yields a unique class of multiferroics.

Magnetic moments induce strong phonon renormalization in FeSi.

Project description:The interactions of electronic, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in solids result in complex phase diagrams, new emergent phenomena and technical applications. While electron-phonon coupling is well understood, and interactions between spin and electronic excitations are intensely investigated, only little is known about the dynamic interactions between spin and lattice excitations. Noncentrosymmetric FeSi is known to undergo with increasing temperature a crossover from insulating to metallic behaviour with concomitant magnetic fluctuations, and exhibits strongly temperature-dependent phonon energies. Here we show by detailed inelastic neutron-scattering measurements and ab initio calculations that the phonon renormalization in FeSi is linked to its unconventional magnetic properties. Electronic states mediating conventional electron-phonon coupling are only activated in the presence of strong magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, phonons entailing strongly varying Fe-Fe distances are damped via dynamic coupling to the temperature-induced magnetic moments, highlighting FeSi as a material with direct spin-phonon coupling and multiple interaction paths.
