Transformation optics with Fabry-Perot resonances.

ABSTRACT: Transformation optics is a powerful tool to design various novel devices, such as invisibility cloak. Fantastic effects from this technique are usually accompanied with singular mappings, resulting in challenging implementations and narrow bands of working frequencies. Here in this article, Fabry-Pérot resonances in materials of extreme anisotropy are used to design various transformation optical devices that are not only easy to realize but also work well for a set of resonant frequencies (multiple frequencies). As an example, a prototype of a cylindrical concentrator is fabricated for microwaves.

Adaptive optics enhanced sensitivity in Fabry-Perot based photoacoustic tomography.

Project description:All-optical ultrasound detection bears a number of unique advantages for photoacoustic tomography, including the ability for high resolution sampling of the acoustic field and its compatibility with a wide variety of other optical modalities. However, optical schemes based on miniaturized cavities are sensitive to optical aberrations as well as manufacturing-induced cavity imperfections which degrade sensor sensitivity and deteriorate photoacoustic image quality. Here we present an experimental method based on adaptive optics that is capable of enhancing the overall sensitivity of Fabry-Pérot based photoacoustic sensors. We experimentally observe clear improvements in photoacoustic signal detection as well as overall image quality after photoacoustic tomography reconstructions when applied to mammalian tissues in vivo.

MEMS Tunable Metasurfaces Based on Gap Plasmon or Fabry-Perot Resonances.

Project description:Tunable metasurfaces promise to enable adaptive optical systems with complex functionalities. Among possible realizations, a recent platform combining microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with gap-surface plasmon (GSP) metasurfaces offers high modulation efficiency, broadband operation, and fast response. We compare tunable metasurfaces operating in GSP and Fabry-Pérot (FP) regions by investigating polarization-independent blazed gratings both numerically and experimentally. Peak efficiency is calculated to be ∼75% in both cases (∼40% in measurements), while the operation bandwidth is found larger when operating in the GSP region. Advantages of operating in the FP region include relaxed assembly requirements and operation tolerances. Additionally, simulation and experimental results show that coupling between neighboring unit cells increases for larger air gaps, resulting in deteriorated efficiency. We believe the presented analysis provides important guidelines for designing tunable metasurfaces for diverse applications in miniaturized adaptive optical systems.

Fabry-Perot resonances and a crossover to the quantum Hall regime in ballistic graphene quantum point contacts.

Project description:We report on the observation of quantum transport and interference in a graphene device that is attached with a pair of split gates to form an electrostatically-defined quantum point contact (QPC). In the low magnetic field regime, the resistance exhibited Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonances due to np'n(pn'p) cavities formed by the top gate. In the quantum Hall (QH) regime with a high magnetic field, the edge states governed the phenomena, presenting a unique condition where the edge channels of electrons and holes along a p-n junction acted as a solid-state analogue of a monochromatic light beam. We observed a crossover from the FP to QH regimes in ballistic graphene QPC under a magnetic field with varying temperatures. In particular, the collapse of the QH effect was elucidated as the magnetic field was decreased. Our high-mobility graphene device enabled observation of such quantum coherence effects up to several tens of kelvins. The presented device could serve as one of the key elements in future electronic quantum optic devices.

Optical 'magnetic mirror' metasurfaces using interference between Fabry-Perot cavity resonances in coaxial apertures.

Project description:Here we propose and computationally demonstrate a quasi-planar metasurface consisting of arrays of pairs of concentric coaxial apertures in a metallic film. The structure relies on destructive interference between Fabry-Pérot modes excited in each aperture at resonance producing transmitted fields that interfere destructively leading to suppressed transmission. Conversely, we show that in the case of a perfect conductor, near-perfect, broadband reflection can be achieved with zero phase change in the electric field and a variation of 2π on passing through the coincident resonances. Extending the concept to shorter wavelengths, we show that mirrors exhibiting close to a 2π phase excursion, albeit with a reduction in the amplitude reflection coefficient at resonance and a lower Q, can be also achieved. Structures such as these can be used to enhance light-matter interactions at surfaces and act as high impedance ground planes for antenna applications.

Taming Fabry-Perot resonances in a dual-metasurface multiband antenna with beam steering in one of the bands.

Project description:Metasurfaces are artificial materials that can provide properties not readily available in nature for the interaction with acoustic, elastodynamic, or electromagnetic waves. In Electromagnetics, metasurfaces allow particular functionalities to antennas, which in turn lately have been increasingly pushed to a multiband operation. To fully exploit metasurfaces' capabilities, the use of a metasurface reflector and a metasurface superstrate surrounding a radiating element in multiband antennas is interesting. However, such topology generally creates multiple reflections inside the formed cavity, known as Fabry-Pérot resonances. Here we show that one should tame this phenomenon to use two parallel metasurfaces surrounding a planar radiating element. We present the conditions to obtain directive, multiband antennas under such circumstances. The concepts are validated with a compact device for 5G/4G/Wi-Fi 2.4/5/6E performing a beam steering in the 5G without disturbing the radiation patterns of the other bands. This device demonstrates that the functionalities of two metasurfaces may be exploited in a single design if the presented conditions are respected. We also anticipate our work to be a starting point for other studies in the wave domain. For example, compact, multiband, beam-steerable microphones or sonar transducers with two parallel metasurfaces could be investigated in the future.

Chirality Enhancement Using Fabry-Perot-Like Cavity.

Project description:Chiral molecules that do not superimpose on their mirror images are the foundation of all life forms on earth. Chiral molecules exhibit chiroptical responses, i.e., they have different electromagnetic responses to light of different circular polarizations. However, chiroptical responses in natural materials, such as circular dichroism and optical rotation dispersion, are intrinsically small because the size of a chiral molecule is significantly shorter than the wavelength of electromagnetic wave. Conventional technology for enhancing chiroptical signal entails demanding requirements on precise alignment of the chiral molecules to certain nanostructures, which however only leads to a limited performance. Herein, we show a new approach towards enhancement of chiroptical effects through a Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity formed by two handedness-preserving metamirrors operating in the GHz region. We experimentally show that the FP cavity resonator can enhance the optical activity of the chiral molecule by an order of magnitude. Our approach may pave the way towards state-of-the-art chiral sensing applications.

Theory for Perfect Transmodal Fabry-Perot Interferometer.

Project description:We establish the theory for perfect transmodal Fabry-Perot interferometers that can convert longitudinal modes solely to transverse modes and vice versa, reaching up to 100% efficiency. Two exact conditions are derived for plane mechanical waves: simultaneous constructive interferences of each of two coupled orthogonal modes, and intermodal interference at the entrance and exit sides of the interferometer with specific skew polarizations. Because the multimodal interferences and specific skew motions require unique anisotropic interferometers, they are realized by metamaterials. The observed peak patterns by the transmodal interferometers are similar to those found in the single-mode Fabry-Perot resonance, but multimodality complicates the involved mechanics. We provide their design principle and experimented with a fabricated interferometer. This theory expands the classical Fabry-Perot resonance to the realm of mode-coupled waves, having profound impact on general wave manipulation. The transmodal interferometer could sever as a device to transfer wave energy freely between dissimilar modes.

A tunable Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometer in graphene.

Project description:Electron interferometry with quantum Hall (QH) edge channels in semiconductor heterostructures can probe and harness the exchange statistics of anyonic excitations. However, the charging effects present in semiconductors often obscure the Aharonov-Bohm interference in QH interferometers and make advanced charge-screening strategies necessary. Here we show that high-mobility monolayer graphene constitutes an alternative material system, not affected by charging effects, for performing Fabry-Pérot QH interferometry in the integer QH regime. In devices equipped with gate-tunable quantum point contacts acting on the edge channels of the zeroth Landau level, we observe-in agreement with theory-high-visibility Aharonov-Bohm interference widely tunable through electrostatic gating or magnetic fields. A coherence length of 10 μm at a temperature of 0.02 K allows us to further achieve coherently coupled double Fabry-Pérot interferometry. In future, QH interferometry with graphene devices may enable investigations of anyonic excitations in fractional QH states.

Ultrasonic barrier-through imaging by Fabry-Perot resonance-tailoring panel.

Project description:Imaging technologies that provide detailed information on intricate shapes and states of an object play critical roles in nanoscale dynamics, bio-organ and cell studies, medical diagnostics, and underwater detection. However, ultrasonic imaging of an object hidden by a nearly impenetrable metal barrier remains intractable. Here, we present the experimental results of ultrasonic imaging of an object in water behind a metal barrier of a high impedance mismatch. In comparison to direct ultrasonic images, our method yields sufficient object information on the shapes and locations with minimal errors. While our imaging principle is based on the Fabry-Perot (FP) resonance, our strategy for reducing attenuation in our experiments focuses on customising the resonance at any desired frequency. To tailor the resonance frequency, we placed an elaborately engineered panel of a specific material and thickness, called the FP resonance-tailoring panel (RTP), and installed the panel in front of a barrier at a controlled distance. Since our RTP-based imaging technique is readily compatible with conventional ultrasound devices, it can realise underwater barrier-through imaging and communication and enhance skull-through ultrasonic brain imaging.

Direct laser-written optomechanical membranes in fiber Fabry-Perot cavities.

Project description:Integrated micro- and nanophotonic optomechanical experiments enable the manipulation of mechanical resonators on the single phonon level. Interfacing these structures requires elaborate techniques limited in tunability, flexibility, and scaling towards multi-mode systems. Here, we demonstrate a cavity optomechanical experiment using 3D-laser-written polymer membranes inside fiber Fabry-Perot cavities. Vacuum coupling rates of g0/2π ≈ 30 kHz to the fundamental megahertz mechanical mode are reached. We observe optomechanical spring tuning of the mechanical resonator frequency by tens of kilohertz exceeding its linewidth at cryogenic temperatures. The direct fiber coupling, its scaling capabilities to coupled resonator systems, and the potential implementation of dissipation dilution structures and integration of electrodes make it a promising platform for fiber-tip integrated accelerometers, optomechanically tunable multi-mode mechanical systems, and directly fiber-coupled systems for microwave to optics conversion.
