Project description:Ionic Liquids are a broad group of salts with low melting points that can be specifically tuned for a broad range of applications. Despite being initially considered “green” solvents, their better environmental friendliness compared to traditional solvents has been increasingly challenged. In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular effects of ILs exposure by using RNA-sequencing to study differential gene expression patterns. Thus, we exposed Daphnia magna to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C2mim]Cl), 1-dodecyl chloride-3-methylimidazolium ([C12mim]Cl) and cholinium chloride ([Chol]Cl). Results suggest that the three ILs share several mechanisms of toxicity, including cellular membrane and cytoskeleton damage, oxidative stress, inhibition of antioxidant enzymes, mitochondrial affectation, changes in protein biosynthesis and energy production, DNA damage, and ultimately, programmed cell death and disease initiation. Overall, the dataset revealed that [C2mim]Cl and [C12mim]Cl were, respectively, the least and the most toxic ILs at the transcriptional level. Also, it is reinforced that [Chol]Cl is not devoid of environmental hazardous potential. Unique gene expression signatures could also be identified for each IL.

Project description:The interfacial behavior of ionic liquids promises tunable lubrication as well as playing an integral role in ion diffusion for electron transfer. Diluting the ionic liquids optimizes bulk parameters, such as electric conductivity, and one would expect dilution to disrupt the near-wall molecular ordering. We study this ordering in the ionic liquids [Emim]+[NTf2]-, [Emim]+[DCA]-, and [C4mpyr]+[NTf2]-, diluted in the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide. We found a structural crossover from well-ordered ionic liquids to a well-ordered solvent with increasing dilution, but this occurs nonlinearly, with solvent molecules initially space-filling and solvating and later disrupting the ionic layers. This is of key importance for ionic liquids as optimized tunable nanolubricants.

Project description:Carbohydrates represent a promising option in transitioning from oil-based chemical resources to renewable ones, with the goal of developing chemistries for a sustainable future. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and largely available monosaccharides already provide useful chemical building blocks, so-called platform chemicals, such as levulinic acid and hydroxymethyl furfural, as well as solvents like cyrene or gamma-valerolactone. Therefore, there is great anticipation for novel applications involving materials and chemicals derived from sugars. In the field of ionic liquids (ILs), sugar-based ILs have been overlooked for a long time, mainly on account of their multistep demanding preparation. However, exploring new strategies for accessing sugar-based ILs, their study, and their exploitation, are attracting increasing interest. This is due to the growing concerns about the negative (eco)toxicity profile of most ILs in conjunction with their non-sustainable nature. In the present review, a literature survey concerning the development of sugar-based ILs since 2011 is presented. Their preparation strategies and thermal behavior analyses, sorted by sugar type, make up the first two sections with the intention to provide the reader with a useful guide. A final overview of the potential applications of sugar-based ILs and their future perspectives complement the present analysis.

Project description:In this study, we determined the enthalpies of vaporisation for a suitable set of molecular and ionic liquids using modern techniques for vapour pressure measurements, such as the quartz crystal microbalance, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gas chromatographic methods. This enabled us to measure reasonable vapour pressures, avoiding the problem of the decomposition of the ionic liquids at high temperatures. The enthalpies of vaporisation could be further analysed by applying the well-known "group contribution" methods for molecular liquids and the "centerpiece" method for ionic liquids. This combined approach allowed for the dissection of the enthalpies of vaporisation into different types of molecular interaction, including hydrogen bonding and the dispersion interaction in the liquid phase, without knowing the existing species in both the liquid and gas phases.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) incorporating cyclic phosphonium cations are a novel category of materials. We report here on the synthesis and characterization of four new cyclic phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ILs with aliphatic and aromatic pendant groups. In addition to the syntheses of these novel materials, we report on a comparison of their properties with their ammonium congeners. These exemplars are slightly less conductive and have slightly smaller self-diffusion coefficients than their cyclic ammonium congeners.

Project description:Ionic liquids are an interesting class of soft matter with viscosities of one or two orders of magnitude higher than that of water. Unfortunately, classical, non-polarizable molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of ionic liquids result in too slow dynamics and demonstrate the need for explicit inclusion of polarizability. The inclusion of polarizability, here via the Drude oscillator model, requires amendments to the employed thermostat, where we consider a dual Nosé-Hoover thermostat, as well as a dual Langevin thermostat. We investigate the effects of the choice of a thermostat and the underlying parameters such as the masses and force constants of the Drude particles on static and dynamic properties of ionic liquids. Here, we show that Langevin thermostats are not suitable for investigating the dynamics of ionic liquids. Since polarizable MD simulations are associated with high computational costs, we employed a self-developed graphics processing unit enhanced code within the MD program CHARMM to keep the overall computational effort reasonable.

Project description:Water-miscible alkylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) are "green" co-solvents for laccase catalysis, but generally inhibit enzyme activity. Here, we present novel insights into inhibition mechanisms by a combination of enzyme kinetics analysis and molecular simulation. Alkylimidazolium cations competitively bound to the TI Cu active pocket in the laccase through hydrophobic interactions. Cations with shorter alkyl chains (C₂~C₆) entered the channel inside the pocket, exhibiting a high compatibility with laccase (competitive inhibition constant Kic = 3.36~3.83 mM). Under the same conditions, [Omim]Cl (Kic = 2.15 mM) and [Dmim]Cl (Kic = 0.18 mM) with longer alkyl chains bound with Leu296 or Leu297 near the pocket edge and Leu429 around TI Cu, which resulted in stronger inhibition. Complexation with alkylimidazolium cations shifted the pH optima of laccase to the right by 0.5 unit, and might, thereby, lead to invalidation of the Hofmeister series of anions. EtSO₄- showed higher biocompatibility than did Ac- or Cl-, probably due to its binding near the TI Cu and its hindering the entry of alkylimidazolium cations. In addition, all tested ILs accelerated the scavenging of 2, 2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals, which, however, did not play a determining role in the inhibition of laccase.

Project description:Charge scaling as an effective solution to the experiment-computation disagreement in molecular modelling of ionic liquids (ILs) could bring the computational results close to the experimental reference for various thermodynamic properties. According to the large-scale benchmark calculations of mass density, solvation, and water-ILs transfer-free energies in our series of papers, the charge-scaling factor of 0.8 serves as a near-optimal option generally applicable to most ILs, although a system-dependent parameter adjustment could be attempted for further improved performance. However, there are situations in which such a charge-scaling treatment would fail. Namely, charge scaling cannot really affect the simulation outcome, or minimally perturbs the results that are still far from the experimental value. In such situations, the vdW radius as an additional adjustable parameter is commonly tuned to minimize the experiment-calculation deviation. In the current work, considering two ILs from the quinuclidinium family, we investigate the impacts of this vdW-scaling treatment on the mass density and the solvation/partition thermodynamics in a fashion similar to our previous charge-scaling works, i.e., scanning the vdW-scaling factor and computing physical properties under these parameter sets. It is observed that the mass density exhibits a linear response to the vdW-scaling factor with slopes close to -1.8 g/mL. By further investigating a set of physiochemically relevant temperatures between 288 K and 348 K, we confirm the robustness of the vdW-scaling treatment in the estimation of bulk properties. The best vdW-scaling parameter for mass density would worsen the computation of solvation/partition thermodynamics, and a marginal decrease in the vdW-scaling factor is considered as an intermediate option balancing the reproductions of bulk properties and solvation thermodynamics. These observations could be understood in a way similar to the charge-scaling situation. i.e., overfitting some properties (e.g., mass density) would degrade the accuracy of the other properties (e.g., solvation free energies). Following this principle, the general guideline for applying this vdW-tuning protocol is by using values between the density-derived choice and the solvation/partition-derived solution. The charge and current vdW scaling treatments cover commonly encountered ILs, completing the protocol for accurate modelling of ILs with fixed-charge force fields.

Project description:Lignin, the second most abundant biopolymer found in nature, has emerged as a potential source of sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials. Finding suitable solvents, as well as technologies for efficient and affordable lignin dissolution and depolymerization, are major obstacles in the conversion of lignin to value-added products. Certain ionic liquids (ILs) are capable of dissolving and depolymerizing lignin but designing and developing an effective IL for lignin dissolution remains quite challenging. To address this issue, the COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) model was used to screen 5670 ILs by computing logarithmic activity coefficients (ln(γ)) and excess enthalpies (HE) of lignin, respectively. Based on the COSMO-RS computed thermodynamic properties (ln(γ) and HE) of lignin, anions such as acetate, methyl carbonate, octanoate, glycinate, alaninate, and lysinate in combination with cations like tetraalkylammonium, tetraalkylphosphonium, and pyridinium are predicted to be suitable solvents for lignin dissolution. The dissolution properties such as interaction energy between anion and cation, viscosity, Hansen solubility parameters, dissociation constants, and Kamlet-Taft parameters of selected ILs were evaluated to assess their propensity for lignin dissolution. Furthermore, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to understand the structural and dynamic properties of tetrabutylammonium [TBA]+-based ILs and lignin mixtures and to shed light on the mechanisms involved in lignin dissolution. MD simulation results suggested [TBA]+-based ILs have the potential to dissolve lignin because of their higher contact probability and interaction energies with lignin when compared to cholinium lysinate.
