Crystal structure of (E)-4-{4-[eth-yl(2-hydroxy-eth-yl)amino]-styr-yl}-1-methyl-pyridinium nitrate hemihydrate.

ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C18H23N2O(+)·NO3 (-)·0.5H2O, contains two independent 4-{4-[eth-yl(2-hy-droxy-eth-yl)amino]-styr-yl}-1-methyl-pyridin-1-ium cations, two nitrate anions and one lattice water mol-ecule. In the cations, the pyridine ring is twisted with respect by 7.98?(12) and 18.42?(10)° to the benzene ring. In the crystal, the cations, the anions and the lattice water mol-ecules are linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds and weak C-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular architecture. ?-? stacking occurs between pyridine and benzene rings of adjacent cations, the centroid-centroid distances being 3.8169?(15) and 3.8663?(14)?Å. In the crystal, one of the independent cations is disordered, the central vinyl unit and the terminal hy-droxy-lethyl group being disordered over two sets of sites with site occupancy factors of 0.600?(6) and 0.400?(6).

The benzene ring of the tosyl-ate anion makes a dihedral angle of 4.8 (2)° with the best mean plane of the pyridinium cation. The pyridinium cation and the tosyl-ate anion are hydrogen bonded to the water mol-ecule, and the crystal packing is further stabilized by inter-molecular C-H⋯O and π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid separations of 3.648 (3) and 3.594 (2) Å.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(16)H(19)N(2) (+)·I(3) (-), contains a (E)-2-[4-(dimethyl-amino)-styr-yl)-1-methyl-pyrid-in-ium cation and half each of two triiodide anions. The complete triiodide anions are each generated by inversion symmetry. The planar cation has all of its eighteen non-H atoms situated on a mirror plane. In the crystal, the cations are stacked along the b axis by ?-? inter-actions with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.5757?(13)?Å. The triiodide anions are located between the cations. The crystal structure is further consolidated by short C?C [3.322?(9)-3.3952?(19)?Å] contacts.

Project description:In the title compound, C(18)H(23)N(2) (+)·I(-), the cation exists in the E configuration with respect to the ethenyl C=C bond. One ethyl substituent of the diethyl-amino group of the cation is disordered over two positions in a 0.73789 (9):0.26211 (9) ratio. The cation exists in the E configuration with respect to the C=C bond and the π-conjugated system is essentially planar with a dihedral angle of 0.82 (10)° between the pyridinium and benzene rings. The cation and anion are almost orthogonal with a dihedral angle of 86.71 (10)° between the π-conjugated system of the cation and benzene ring of the anion. In the crystal, mol-ecules are arranged into chains along [001] and adjacent chains are linked by weak C-H⋯O inter-actions. The crystal is further stablilized by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and weak C-H⋯π inter-actions.

The main part of the cation is nearly planar with a dihedral angle of 4.50 (10)° between the pyridinium and benzene rings. In the crystal, the components are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C-H⋯O weak inter-actions. Aromatic π-π stacking inter-actions with centroid-centroid separations of 3.7363 (12) and 3.7490 (13) Å also occur.

The methoxy-carbonyl-methyl and amino groups are essentially coplanar and the methoxy-carbonyl-methyl group makes a dihedral angle of 79.73 (10)° with the mean plane of the hydroxy-phenyl ring. The amino and methoxy-carbonyl-methyl groups are involved in an intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond which generates an S(5) ring motif. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked via N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and weak C-H⋯O inter-actions into a two-dimensional network parallel to the (01) plane. The crystal structure is further stabilized by C-H⋯π inter-actions.
