A New Record of Volutella ciliata Isolated from Crop Field Soil in Korea.

ABSTRACT: During a survey of fungal species in South Korea, a species of Volutella ciliata was isolated and described based on the analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of its rDNA and its morphological characteristics. This is the first record of Volutella ciliata isolated from crop field soil in Korea.

Three New Records of Mortierella Species Isolated from Crop Field Soil in Korea.

Project description:Three new fungal species of the genus Mortierella, Mortierella zychae, Mortierella ambigua, and Mortierella indohii, have been reported in Korea. The fungi were encountered during a study on the fungal community of soil samples collected from different locations in Korea. The species were identified based on molecular and morphological analyses. This study presents detailed descriptions of the morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analysis of these three fungi. All three species were found to be sensitive to triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. M. zychae demonstrated the highest intensity of mycelial staining, indicating that this species has the highest potential to produce arachidonic acid of the three species. The staining results indicated that the newly recorded species could potentially be useful for arachidonic acid production.

Discovery of Two New Talaromyces Species from Crop Field Soil in Korea.

Project description:Two new fungal species of the genus Talaromyces, Talaromyces purpurogenus and Talaromyces trachyspermus from the Trichocomaceae family, were recovered during an investigation of fungal communities in soil collected from the Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do provinces of Korea. These two species have not been previously officially reported from Korea. In this study, detailed descriptions of internal transcribed spacer rDNA and beta-tubulin gene regions of these two fungi are presented. Morphological features of the two fungi in five agar media, potato dextrose, oatmeal, malt extract, czapek yeast extract, and yeast extract sucrose, are also reported. The species were identified on the basis of molecular and morphological analysis, and herein we present data with detailed descriptions and figures.

Project description:Two new records of Trichocomaceae, namely Aspergillus allahabadii and Penicillium sizovae, were isolated in 2016 during a survey of fungal diversity in different crop fields locations in Gyeongnam, Korea. These species were identified based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis using internal transcribed spacer region and β-tubulin-encoding gene sequence data. A. allahabadii and P. sizovae have not yet been reported in Korea. Thus, this is the first report of these species in Korea, and their descriptions as well as details of their morphological characters are presented.

Among them, one species was identified and described as P. cainii based on phylogentic analysis of internal transcribed spacer and β-tubulin (BT2) genes and morphological characteristics. This is a first report of P. cainii in Korea.

A new record of Scedosporium dehoogii isolated from paddy field soil in Iran: Phylogeny and antifungal susceptibility profiles.

Project description:Background and purposeScedosporium species are ubiquitous environmental fungi, which are considered emerging agents that trigger disease in humans and animals. The present study aimed to determine Scedosporium dehoogii strain isolated from paddy field soil samples using semi-selective media and evaluate its antifungal susceptibility profile.Materials and methodsThree paddy field soil samples were collected during an investigation for the isolation of Scedosporium species in Mazandaran province, Iran. Morphological and molecular analyses based on ITS-rDNA sequencing were performed. Furthermore, in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing for conventional drugs and novel imidazole (luliconazole) was performed based on Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute M38-A3 guidelines.ResultsIn this study, S. dehoogii was isolated from the soil in paddy fields. Based on the results, itraconazole and luliconazole showed the least and most antifungal activity against this isolate, respectively.ConclusionBased on the findings, molecular identification was essential for distinguishing the species of S. dehoogii. Remarkably, luliconazole showed potent activity against this strain.

New Record of Mariannaea elegans var. elegans in Korea.

Project description:A Mariannaea fungus was isolated during investigation of an elm tree infested with unidentified beetles. Based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence, the fungus was identified as Mariannaea elegans var. elegans. Fungal growth was better on malt extract agar than on potato dextrose agar and oatmeal agar. Optimal temperature and pH for growth of the fungus were 30? and pH 7.0, respectively. The fungus was found to have the ability to produce extracellular enzymes such as amylase, ?-glucosidase, cellulase, and protease. This is first report on M. elegans var. elegans in Korea.
