Eosin Y-catalyzed visible-light-mediated aerobic oxidative cyclization of N,N-dimethylanilines with maleimides.

ABSTRACT: A novel and simple strategy for the efficient synthesis of the corresponding tetrahydroquinolines from N,N-dimethylanilines and maleimides using visible light in an air atmosphere in the presence of Eosin Y as a photocatalyst has been developed. The metal-free protocol involves aerobic oxidative cyclization via sp(3) C-H bond functionalization process to afford good yields in a one-pot procedure under mild conditions.

Project description:Azo compounds are useful molecules with a wide range of applications in organic chemistry. Here, a novel visible-light-driven oxidative dehydrogenation of alkyl 2-phenylhydrazinecarboxylates is used for the synthesis of azo compounds. This synthetic method was conducted under an aerobic environment with mild reaction conditions. Sodium anthraquinone sulfonate (SAQS) was employed as the crucial organic photocatalyst in a visible-light-driven reaction to generate various azo compounds in high yields. In addition, aerobic transformation of hydrazobenzenes to azobenzenes using visible light was successfully carried out under SAQS-mediated reaction conditions. This procedure is a practical and promising synthetic approach to produce useful azo compounds.

Rh-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cyclization of anilines, alkynes, and CO.

Project description:Transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative C-H cyclization of anilines has been an attractive and powerful strategy for the efficient construction of N-heterocycles. However, primary and tertiary anilines are rarely employed in this strategy due to the relative instability with strong oxidants or the presence of three C-N bonds. We describe here a novel Rh-catalyzed C-H cyclization of a wide range of anilines with alkynes and CO, using an aerobic oxidative protocol. Particularly, the simple primary anilines and readily prepared tertiary anilines could be easily converted to quinolin-2(1H)-ones, which are high value-added, biologically significant N-heterocycles, via C-N bond cleavage.

Visible-light-promoted and chlorophyll-catalyzed aerobic desulfurization of thioamides to amides.

Project description:A novel method for the metal-free synthesis of amides from thioamides based on visible-light photoredox catalysis and in an air atmosphere is reported. Natural pigment chlorophyll is used as a photosensitizer to generate singlet molecular oxygen 1O2, which is involved in the aerobic desulfurization of thioamides. The protocol provides amides in good yields at room temperature under mild conditions. On the basis of experimental results, a plausible photoredox mechanism is proposed.

Visible Light-Mediated Dearomative Hydrogen Atom Abstraction/ Cyclization Cascade of Indoles.

Project description:The photochemical synthesis of yet unknown 2-oxospiro[azetidine-3,3'-indolines] (17 examples, 80-95 % yield), 2,4-dioxospiro[azetidine-3,3'-indolines] (eight examples, 87-97 % yield), and 1-oxo-1,3-dihydrospiro[indene-2,3'-indolines] (17 examples, 85-97 % yield) is described. Starting from readily accessible 3-substituted indoles, a dearomatization of the indole core was accomplished upon irradiation at λ=420 nm in the presence of thioxanthen-9-one (10 mol%) as the sensitizer. Based on mechanistic evidence (triplet energy determination, deuteration experiments, by-product analysis) it is proposed that the reaction proceeds by energy transfer via a 1,4- or 1,5-diradical intermediate. The latter intermediates are formed by excited state hydrogen atom transfer from suitable alkyl groups within the C3 substituent to the indole C2 carbon atom. Subsequent ring closure proceeds with pronounced diastereoselectivity to generate a 4- or 5-membered spirocyclic dearomatized product with several options for further functionalization.

Project description:Allylic sulfamides undergo efficient aerobic oxidative cyclization at room temperature, mediated by a new Pd catalyst system consisting of 5% Pd(TFA)(2)/10% DMSO in THF. The synthetic utility of these reactions is enhanced by several features: (1) the sulfamide substrates are accessible in multi-gram scale from the corresponding allylic and primary amines, (2) the cyclic sulfamide products are readily converted to the corresponding 1,2-diamines upon treatment with LiAlH(4), and (3) substrates derived from chiral allylic amines cyclize with very high levels of diastereoselectivity.

Project description:A metal-free, photoinduced aerobic tandem amine dehydrogenation/Povarov cyclization/aromatization reaction between N-aryl glycine esters and indoles leads to tetracyclic 11H-indolo[3,2-c]quinolines under mild conditions and with high yields. The reaction can be performed by using molecular iodine along with visible light, or by combining an organic photoredox catalyst with a halide anion. Mechanistic studies reveal that product formation occurs through a combination of radical-mediated oxidation steps with an iminium ion or N-haloiminium ion [4+2]-cycloaddition, and the N-heterocyclic products constitute new analogues of the antiplasmodial natural alkaloid isocryptolepine.

Visible light sensitizer-catalyzed highly selective photo oxidation from thioethers into sulfoxides under aerobic condition.

Project description:We report herein a visible light sensitizer-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of thioethers, affording sulfoxides in good to excellent yields. The loading of the catalyst was as low as 0.1?mol%. The selectivity was excellent. Mechanism studies showed both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical anion were likely involved in this transformation.

Owing to their low reduction potentials, the inexpensive organic dye eosin Y could be used as the photocatalyst of the organocatalytic hydroimination reaction. Furthermore, reaction conditions for a unique iminohydroxylation were identified; visible-light-mediated electron transfer from novel electron donor-acceptor complexes of the oximes and Et3N was proposed as a key step of this process.

A wide range of substrates bearing different substituents and derived from ubiquitous carboxylic acids, including α-amino acids, were synthesized and examined under this very mild, efficient, and cost effective transition-metal-free synthetic method. These afforded various functionalized oxindoles featuring a C3 quaternary stereogenic center. Mechanistic experiments suggest a radical mechanism.
