The JID is a major resource for publishing dermatologic research. Here we document bibliometric systems that permit detailed analysis of JID's relative scientific quality. We provide an overview of metrics employed by ISI Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge and Elsevier's open-access Scopus to measure JID's comparative performance. Project description:BackgroundPublications regarding the 100 top-cited articles in a given discipline are common, but studies reporting the association between article topics and their citations are lacking. Whether or not reviews and original articles have a higher impact factor than case reports is a point for verification in this study. In addition, article topics that can be used for predicting citations have not been analyzed. Thus, this study aims to METHODS:: We searched PubMed Central and downloaded 100 top-cited abstracts in the journal Medicine (Baltimore) since 2011. Four article types and 7 topic categories (denoted by MeSH terms) were extracted from abstracts. Contributors to these 100 top-cited articles were analyzed. Social network analysis and Sankey diagram analysis were performed to identify influential article types and topic categories. MeSH terms were applied to predict the number of article citations. We then examined the prediction power with the correlation coefficients between MeSH weights and article citations.ResultsThe citation counts for the 100 articles ranged from 24 to 127, with an average of 39.1 citations. The most frequent article types were journal articles (82%) and comparative studies (10%), and the most frequent topics were epidemiology (48%) and blood and immunology (36%). The most productive countries were the United States (24%) and China (23%). The most cited article (PDID = 27258521) with a count of 135 was written by Dr Shang from Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University (China) in 2016. MeSH terms were evident in the prediction power of the number of article citations (correlation coefficients = 0.49, t = 5.62).ConclusionThe breakthrough was made by developing dashboards showing the overall concept of the 100 top-cited articles using the Sankey diagram. MeSH terms can be used for predicting article citations. Analyzing the 100 top-cited articles could help future academic pursuits and applications in other academic disciplines.

Project description:BackgroundNetwork pharmacology (NP) has become an increasingly important focus in the drug research field over the past decade. However, no study to date has mapped the current status of NP. Therefore, we performed a bibliometric study to evaluate the top 100 cited papers on NP.MethodsWe searched the Web of Science Core Collection from its inception to February 25, 2019, using the terms "network pharmacology" and "systems pharmacology." Key data, including title, publication year, number of citations, authors, countries/regions, organizations, and journals, were retrieved and analyzed using Excel 2016 and VOSviewer 1.6.10.ResultsThe total number of citations for the 100 cited papers ranged from 21 to 1,238, published in 53 journals, from 2005 to 2017. The top three journals with the most publications on NP were Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (n?=?8, IF2017?=?6.544), Journal of Ethnopharmacology (n?=?8, IF2017?=?3.115), and PLoS One (n?=?7, IF2017?=?2.766). Most published articles were from the USA (n?=?41) and China (n?=?35). The most active author was Wang Yonghua from the Northwest A&F University, and of the 100 publications, 14 listing his name. The most frequently used substantive terms included "drug discovery," "traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)," "in-vitro," "cancer," and "cardiovascular disease." Conclusions. The USA and China made the greatest contribution to NP research. The current NP research mainly focused on NP methods (including experimental validation) and using them to explore the molecular mechanisms of TCM for some critical diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Furthermore, we believe some guidelines should be developed to regulate NP studies.

Project description:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had widespread effects across the globe and continues to affect global public health. This study aims to select and feature highly cited publications on the COVID-19 vaccine. The Web of Science core database was used to extract relevant articles published in recent years. Progress of vaccine studies made in recent two years has mainly focused on the development of different vaccines and the evaluation of their safety and efficacy for population immunity. Clinical trials mainly focusing on the safety and efficacy of diverse vaccines have flourished. Lipid nanoparticle-formulated, nucleoside-modified RNA vaccine and recombinant adenovirus type-5 (26) vectored SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are most commonly studied. Vaccine application-associated challenges mainly include antibody resistance of new variants and unusual severe complications. The correlation between booster immunizations and reinfection is still in the explored state. Currently, antibody resistance of emerging variants is the main vaccine application-associated challenge and the primary reason for vaccine hesitancy. Effective strategies for reinfection prevention are also urgently needed.

Project description:Importance:Citation analysis is a bibliometric method that uses citation rates to evaluate research performance. This type of analysis can identify the articles that have shaped the modern history of obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN). Objectives:To identify and characterize top-cited OBGYN articles in the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science's Science Citation Index Expanded and to compare top-cited OBGYN articles published in specialty OBGYN journals with those published in nonspecialty journals. Design, Setting, and Participants:Cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of top-cited articles that were indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded from 1980 to 2018. The Science Citation Index Expanded was queried using search terms from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology's 2018 certifying examination topics list. The top 100 articles from all journals and the top 100 articles from OBGYN journals were evaluated for specific characteristics. Data were analyzed in March 2019. Main Outcomes and Measures:The articles were characterized by citation number, publication year, topic, study design, and authorship. After excluding articles that featured on both lists, top-cited articles were compared. Results:The query identified 3?767?874 articles, of which 278?846 (7.4%) were published in OBGYN journals. The top-cited article was published by Rossouw and colleagues in JAMA (2002). Top-cited articles published in nonspecialty journals were more frequently cited than those in OBGYN journals (median [interquartile range], 1738 [1490-2077] citations vs 666 [580-843] citations, respectively; P?<?.001) and were more likely to be randomized trials (25.0% vs 2.2%, respectively; difference, 22.8%; 95% CI, 13.5%-32.2%; P?<?.001). Whereas articles from nonspecialty journals focused on broad topics like osteoporosis, articles from OBGYN journal focused on topics like preeclampsia and endometriosis. Conclusions and Relevance:This study found substantial differences between top-cited OBGYN articles published in nonspecialty vs OBGYN journals. These differences may reflect the different goals of the journals, which work together to ensure optimal dissemination of impactful articles.

Project description:BackgroundOver the last several decades, our understanding of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has improved considerably, thereby enhancing our ability to clinically diagnose and treat the disease.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the top 100 most-cited publications related to HS to update bibliometric information on HS.Materials and methodsWe used the Web of Science database to identify reports on hidradenitis suppurativa. Data from the 100 most-cited publications were extracted and analyzed.ResultsThe citation number of the top 100 most-cited articles was 89-532 (mean, 153.51), with the most productive periods being from years 2007 to 2016. Most publications originated from the British Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. The 100 articles originated from 18 countries, with Denmark being the most productive country, followed by the United States (17), England (14), and Germany (12). Jemec GB, from the University of Copenhagen, had 32 citations and was the most frequently identified author. The 100 articles encompassed several fields of research as follows: pathogenesis (18%), pathophysiology (7%), epidemiology (14%), clinical diagnosis and features (16%), treatment (25%), comorbidity (10%), and others (10%). In total, 11 reviews, three guidelines, and 86 original articles (nine randomized clinical trials) were included.ConclusionThrough this bibliometric analysis, we aimed to indicate a series of intellectual landmark publications that offer us critical reviews, guidelines, and original articles, which highlight the immense level of progress achieved in the field of HS.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aims to identify the most frequently cited articles published in the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA) and to analyze the trends in the content and contributors of the literature within the journal.MethodsThe 100 most cited articles published in the JOA were accessed using the Scopus database. The number of citations, year of publication, level of evidence (LOE), article type, country of origin, and contributing institution were each recorded for each article.ResultsThe United States (63%) was the most prolific publishing nation. The 1990s (30%) and 2000s (47%) were the most productive decades. The most common article category was clinical outcomes (33%), followed by technical note (16%) and biomechanics (14%). The plurality of the top 100 articles were well-designed case-control or cohort studies of LOE II (46%) followed by LOE V (32%) and LOE I (11%).ConclusionsUsing citation analysis, the most influential articles in the JOA were comprehensively and objectively analyzed. The most popular fields of research involved clinical outcomes (33%) and technical note (16%), both of which increase an article's likelihood of being highly cited. Knowledge of the most influential articles in the JOA allows for appreciation of current and potential future areas of literature regarding diagnosis, management, and outcome of a patient undergoing arthroplasty.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study aims to analyze the 100 most cited papers and research trends on stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).MethodsWe used Web of Science to identify the 100 most frequently cited papers on SBRT on September 29, 2021 and extracted the following data: publication year, source title, country/region, organization, total citations, and average number of citations per year. The research type and research domain were classified independently by the authors. Then we carried out a bibliometric analysis to determine the trends in research on SBRT.ResultsThese 100 papers were cited a total of 26,540 times, and the median number of citations was 190 (range, 138-1688). "Stereotactic body radiation therapy for inoperable early stage lung cancer" by Timmerman et al. had the highest number of total citations (1688 times). International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics published the largest number of papers (37 papers), followed by Journal of Clinical Oncology (13 papers). The USA contributed the most papers (67 papers), followed by Canada (18 papers). Primary lung cancer (33 papers, 10,683 citations) and oligometastases (30 papers, 7,147 citations) were the most cited research areas.ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first bibliometric analysis of the most frequently cited papers on SBRT. Our results provide insight into the historical development of SBRT and important advances in its application to cancer treatment. Early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer and oligometastases were the most cited research areas in the top 100 publications on SBRT, and SBRT combined with immunotherapy was a hot topic in the past few years. This study is helpful for researchers to identify the most influential papers and current research hotspots on SBRT.

Project description:Machine learning and semantic analysis are computer-based methods to evaluate complex relationships and predict future perspectives. We used these technologies to define recent, current and future topics in pancreatic cancer research. Publications indexed under the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) term 'Pancreatic Neoplasms' from January 1996 to October 2021 were downloaded from PubMed. Using the statistical computing language R and the interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language Python, we extracted publication dates, geographic information, and abstracts from each publication's metadata for bibliometric analyses. The generative statistical algorithm "latent Dirichlet allocation" (LDA) was applied to identify specific research topics and trends. The unsupervised "Louvain algorithm" was used to establish a network to identify relationships between single topics. A total of 60,296 publications were identified and analyzed. The publications were derived from 133 countries, mostly from the Northern Hemisphere. For the term "pancreatic cancer research", 12,058 MeSH terms appeared 1,395,060 times. Among them, we identified the four main topics "Clinical Manifestation and Diagnosis", "Review and Management", "Treatment Studies", and "Basic Research". The number of publications has increased rapidly during the past 25 years. Based on the number of publications, the algorithm predicted that "Immunotherapy", Prognostic research", "Protein expression", "Case reports", "Gemcitabine and mechanism", "Clinical study of gemcitabine", "Operation and postoperation", "Chemotherapy and resection", and "Review and management" as current research topics. To our knowledge, this is the first study on this subject of pancreatic cancer research, which has become possible due to the improvement of algorithms and hardware.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the Middle East (ME) countries' contribution to the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA)'s publications in the past 20 years.MethodsAll articles published in JOA from 2000 to 2020 were evaluated for the contribution prevalence of ME countries' authors, which were divided into category I, if all the authors were affiliated to ME institutions, and category II, if at least one coauthor affiliated to ME institutions was listed in the articles with other international authors.ResultsA total of 7837 original articles were evaluated. Authors affiliated with ME institutions contributed to 144 (1.8%) articles (148 individual country contributions) from ten (62.5%) out of a total of 16 ME countries. Sixty-eight articles (47.2%) were classified as category I; cooperation between different ME institutes (The authors were from two different ME countries.) was reported in two (1.4%) articles. The top five contributing countries were Egypt, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, contributing 89.2% of the total articles published by ME institutions. Out of the 144 articles, 80 (55.6%) articles were published between 2016 and 2020, 37 (25.7%) articles between 2011 and 2015, and 29 (20.1%) articles between 2000 and 2010. There was a 15.7% mean annual growth in the percentage of ME articles.ConclusionAlthough there was an increasing trend in the contributions of ME countries' authors to JOA publications over the past 20 years, the overall contribution is still low; moreover, the cooperation between ME institutions is minimal.

Project description:BackgroundMany authors are concerned which types of peer-review articles can be cited most in academics and who were the highest-cited authors in a scientific discipline. The prerequisites are determined by: (1) classifying article types; and (2) quantifying co-author contributions. We aimed to apply Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) with social network analysis (SNA) and an authorship-weighted scheme (AWS) to meet the prerequisites above and then demonstrate the applications for scholars.MethodsBy searching the PubMed database (pubmed.com), we used the keyword "Medicine" [journal] and downloaded 5,636 articles published from 2012 to 2016. A total number of 9,758 were cited in Pubmed Central (PMC). Ten MeSH terms were separated to represent the journal types of clusters using SNA to compare the difference in bibliometric indices, that is, h, g, and x as well as author impact factor(AIF). The methods of Kendall coefficient of concordance (W) and one-way ANOVA were performed to verify the internal consistency of indices and the difference across MeSH clusters. Visual representations with dashboards were shown on Google Maps.ResultsWe found that Kendall W is 0.97 (χ = 26.22, df = 9, P < .001) congruent with internal consistency on metrics across MeSH clusters. Both article types of methods and therapeutic use show higher frequencies than other 8 counterparts. The author Klaus Lechner (Austria) earns the highest research achievement(the mean of core articles on g = Ag = 15.35, AIF = 21, x = 3.92, h = 1) with one paper (PMID: 22732949, 2012), which was cited 23 times in 2017 and the preceding 5 years.ConclusionPublishing article type with study methodology and design might lead to a higher IF. Both classifying article types and quantifying co-author contributions can be accommodated to other scientific disciplines. As such, which type of articles and who contributes most to a specific journal can be evaluated in the future.
