Status of Exosphaeromaamplicauda (Stimpson, 1857), E.aphrodita (Boone, 1923) and description of three new species (Crustacea, Isopoda, Sphaeromatidae) from the north-eastern Pacific.

ABSTRACT: Exosphaeromaamplicauda (Stimpson, 1857) from the west coast of North America is reviewed and redescribed and revealed to be a group of closely related species. A neotype is designated and the species redescribed based on the neotype and topotypic specimens. Exosphaeromaamplicauda is known only from the coast of California, at Marin, Sonoma and San Mateo Counties. Exosphaeromaaphrodita (Boone, 1923), type locality La Jolla, California and previously considered nomen dubium is taken out of synonymy and re-validated. A further three species: Exosphaeromapaydenae sp. n., Exosphaeromarussellhansoni sp. n., and Exosphaeromapentcheffi sp. n. are described herein. Sphaeromaoctonctum Richardson, 1899 is placed into junior synonymy with Exosphaeromaamplicauda. A key to the Pacific West Coast Exosphaeroma is provided.

Redescription of Dynoides elegans (Boone, 1923) (Crustacea, Isopoda, Sphaeromatidae) from the north-eastern Pacific.

Project description:Dynoides elegans (Boone, 1923) from southern California is reviewed, redescribed, and figured. The original species description did not include figures, making it difficult to attribute individuals to the species. Dynoides saldanai Carvacho and Haasmann, 1984 and Dynoides crenulatus Carvacho & Haasman, 1984 from the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Dynoides brevicornis Kussakin & Malyutina, 1987, from Furugelm Island, Peter the Great Gulf in the Sea of Japan, appear morphologically more similar to each other than to western Pacific species. A large pleonal process is present in about half of the Dynoides species, but is absent in this north-eastern Pacific clade and the north-western Pacific Dynoides brevicornis and Dynoides brevispina. Dynoides dentisinus Shen, 1929 possess a large pleonal spine. It is known from China, Japan, and Korea and is introduced in San Francisco Bay; it can be easily distinguished from Dynoides elegans by the presence of a pleonal process in the former. A key to the Pacific West Coast Dynoides is provided.

Redescription of Gnorimosphaeroma oregonense (Dana, 1853) (Crustacea, Isopoda, Sphaeromatidae), designation of neotype, and 16S-rDNA molecular phylogeny of the north-eastern Pacific species.

Project description:Gnorimosphaeroma oregonense (Dana, 1852) is revised, a male neotype is designated, photographed, and illustrated; the species occurs from Vancouver British Columbia to the central California coast. 16S-rDNA sequences (~650 bp) for all available ethanol preserved species of Gnorimosphaeroma were used to hypothesize their relationships. Our analyses revealed a sister taxon relationship between the fully marine G. oregonense and the brackish to freshwater species, G. noblei. The oyster associated and introduced G. rayi is sister to a previously not recognized or identified, but genetically distinct, Gnorimosphaeroma sp. collected at two sites in San Francisco Bay. Gnorimosphaeroma sp. is probably also a western Pacific species based on its genetic relationship to G. rayi. Photographic comparisons are offered for G. oregonense (marine), G. noblei (freshwater), G. rayi (introduced), G. sp. (presumably introduced), and G. insulare (San Nicolas Island). Records of the holdings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History are summarized. Without material available north of Vancouver through Alaska, the range of G. oregonense could not be genetically verified. This review includes a diagnosis and description of the genus Gnorimosphaeroma Menzies, 1954.

Biodiversity and Biogeography of Chthamalid Barnacles from the North-Eastern Pacific (Crustacea Cirripedia).

Project description:The biogeography and ecology of the species of Chthamalus present on the west coast of America are described, using data from 51 localities from Alaska to Panama, together with their zonation on the shore with respect to that of other barnacles. The species present were C. dalli, Pilsbry 1916, C. fissus, Darwin, 1854, C. anisopoma Pilsbry 1916 and four species in the C. panamensis complex. The latter are C. panamensis Pilsbry, 1916, C. hedgecocki, Pitombo & Burton, 2007, C. alani nom. nov. (formerly C. southwardorum Pitombo & Burton, 2007) and C. newmani sp. nov.). These four species were initially separated by enzyme electrophoresis. They could only be partially separated by DNA bar coding but may be separated using morphological characters.

Description of a new species of Petrolisthes in the Indo-West Pacific with a redefinition of P.hastatus Stimpson, 1858 and resurrection of P.inermis (Heller, 1862) (Crustacea, Anomura, Porcellanidae).

Project description:The porcellanid crab Petrolistheshastatus Stimpson, 1858, has been traditionally viewed as a highly variable species with a wide distribution in the West Pacific. For more than a century there has been taxonomic confusion of this species with morphologically similar taxa, some of which were synonymized with Stimpson's taxon. We redefine Petrolistheshastatus, resurrect Petrolisthesinermis as a valid species, discuss the status of Petrolisthestenkatei De Man, 1893, and describe a new species as Petrolistheselegantissimus from Indonesia.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Scyra compressipes Stimpson, 1857 (Decapoda: Epialtidae).

Project description:The family Epialtidae is the most diversified family within superfamily Majoidea but there is no report for complete mitogenome of any species in this family. This study was performed to sequence a complete mitogenome of Scyra compressipes Stimpson, 1857, as the first mitochondrial genome report from the Epialtidae. The complete mitogenome sequence of S. compressipes was 16,415 bp and it consisted of 36 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, and 21 tRNA genes excluding tRNA-Leu (UAG). tRNA genes ranged from 63 bp to 72 bp in length. The base composition of a complete mitogenome of S. compressipes is 34.7% A, 15.3% C, 10.2% G, and 39.8% T. The phylogenetic position of S. compressipes in the superfamily Majoidea was examined based on 13 PCGs. The phylogenetic analysis showed that S. compressipes was most closely related to Maguimithrax spinosissimus, a representative of the family Mithracidae.

Impact of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity in the North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific.

Project description:Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating weather systems affecting the United States and Central America (USCA). Here we show that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) strongly modulates TC activity over the North Atlantic (NA) and eastern North Pacific (eNP). During positive IPO phases, less (more) TCs were observed over NA (eNP), likely due to the presence of stronger (weaker) vertical wind shear and the resulting changes in genesis potential. Furthermore, TCs over NA tend to keep their tracks more eastward and recurve at lower latitudes during positive IPO phases. Such variations are largely determined by changes in steering flow instead of changes in genesis locations. Over the eNP, smaller track variations are observed at different IPO phases with stable, westward movements of TCs prevailing. These findings have substantial implications for understanding decadal to inter-decadal fluctuations in the risk of TC landfalls along USCA coasts.

Morphological description and molecular characterisation of a new species of Anilocra Leach, 1818 (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cymothoidae) from India.

Project description:A fish parasitic isopod recently reported from India as Anilocra leptosoma Bleeker, 1857, was re-examined and morphologically compared to five closely related species: A. capensis Leach, 1818, A. clupei Williams and Bunkley-Williams, 1986, A. leptosoma Bleeker, 1857, A. paulsikkeli Welicky and Smit, 2019 and A. pilchardi Bariche and Trilles, 2006. This species was sequenced and compared to other known Anilocra species based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene fragments. Both morphological and molecular data corroborate that the Anilocra species parasitising the clupeid fish Tenualosa toli (Valenciennes, 1847) from India should be recognised as a new species, and we describe Anilocra grandmaae n. sp. based on the holotype and paratype females. The key characters of A. grandmaae n. sp. include the body being less than 4.0 times as long as wide; antennula article 3 anterodistal margin expanded, 1.2-1.4 times as wide as long; pleonite 1 concealed by pereonite 7 and lateral margin posteriorly produced; pereopods 1-4 with three nodules on dactylus; endopod of pleopods 3-5 with a proximomedial lobe and folding; and pleotelson ovate, with lateral margins converging smoothly to a caudomedial point.

Nerocila species (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cymothoidae) from Indian marine fishes.

Project description:Eleven Nerocila species are recorded from 22 marine fishes belonging to 15 families. Three, Nerocila arres, Nerocila depressa, and Nerocila loveni, are new for the Indian fauna. N. arres and Nerocila sigani, previously synonymized, are redescribed and their individuality is restored. Nerocila exocoeti, until now inadequately identified, is described and distinctly characterized. A neotype is designated. New hosts were identified for N. depressa, N. loveni, Nerocila phaiopleura, Nerocila serra, and Nerocila sundaica. Host-parasite relationships were considered. The parasitologic indexes were calculated. The site of attachment of the parasites on their hosts was also observed. A checklist of the nominal Nerocila species until now reported from Indian marine fishes was compiled.

Central American mountains inhibit eastern North Pacific seasonal tropical cyclone activity.

Project description:The eastern North Pacific (ENP) has the highest density of tropical cyclones (TCs) on earth, and yet the controls on TCs, from individual events to seasonal totals, remain poorly understood. One effect that has not been fully considered is the unique geography of the Central American mountains. Although observational studies suggest these mountains can readily fuel individual TCs through dynamical processes, here we show that these mountains indeed play the opposite role on the seasonal timescale, hindering seasonal ENP TC activity by up to 35%. We found that these mountains significantly interrupt the abundant moisture transport from the Caribbean Sea to the ENP, limiting deep convection over the open ocean area where TCs preferentially occur. This study advances our fundamental understanding of ENP TC genesis mechanisms across the weather-to-climate timescales, and also highlights the importance of topography representation in improving the ENP regional climate simulations, as well as TC seasonal predictions and future projections.
