Shared vision between fathers and daughters in family businesses: the determining factor that transforms daughters into successors.

ABSTRACT: Family businesses are critical to the United States economy, employing 63% of the workforce and generating 57% of GDP (University of Vermont, 2014). Family business continuity, however, remains elusive as approximately 70% of family businesses do not survive the second generation (Poza, 2013). In order to augment our understanding of how next generation leaders are chosen in family businesses, we examine daughter succession. Using a sample of pairs of family business fathers and daughters and drawing on an earlier study of the dearth of successor daughters in family businesses (Overbeke et al., 2013), we reveal that shared vision between fathers and daughters is central to daughter succession. Self-efficacy and gender norms influence shared vision and when fathers and daughters share a vision for the future of the company, daughters are likely to be transformed into successors.

Shared vision promotes family firm performance.

Project description:A clear picture of the influential drivers of private family firm performance has proven to be an elusive target. The unique characteristics of private family owned firms necessitate a broader, non-financial approach to reveal firm performance drivers. This research study sought to specify and evaluate the themes that distinguish successful family firms from less successful family firms. In addition, this study explored the possibility that these themes collectively form an effective organizational culture that improves longer-term firm performance. At an organizational level of analysis, research findings identified four significant variables: Shared Vision (PNS), Role Clarity (RCL), Confidence in Management (CON), and Professional Networking (OLN) that positively impacted family firm financial performance. Shared Vision exhibited the strongest positive influence among the significant factors. In addition, Family Functionality (APGAR), the functional integrity of the family itself, exhibited a significant supporting role. Taken together, the variables collectively represent an effective family business culture (EFBC) that positively impacted the long-term financial sustainability of family owned firms. The index of effective family business culture also exhibited potential as a predictive non-financial model of family firm performance.

Determining Possible Shared Genetic Architecture Between Myopia and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

Project description:PurposeTo determine genetic correlations between common myopia and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).MethodsWe tested the association of myopia polygenic risk scores (PRSs) with POAG and POAG endophenotypes using two studies: the Australian & New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma (ANZRAG) study comprising 798 POAG cases with 1992 controls, and the Rotterdam Study (RS), a population-based study with 11,097 participants, in which intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic disc parameter measurements were catalogued. PRSs were derived from genome-wide association study meta-analyses conducted by the Consortium for Refractive Error and Myopia (CREAM) and 23andMe. In total, 12 PRSs were constructed and tested. Further, we explored the genetic correlation between myopia, POAG, and POAG endophenotypes by using the linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) method.ResultsWe did not find significant evidence for an association between PRS of myopia with POAG (P = 0.81), IOP (P = 0.07), vertical cup-disc ratio (P = 0.42), or cup area (P = 0.25). We observed a nominal association with retinal nerve fiber layer (P = 7.7 × 10-3) and a significant association between PRS for myopia and disc area (P = 1.59 × 10-9). Using the LDSC method, we found a genetic correlation only between myopia and disc area (genetic correlation [RhoG] = -0.12, P = 1.8 × 10-3), supporting the findings of the PRS approach.ConclusionsUsing two complementary approaches we found no evidence to support a genetic overlap between myopia and POAG; our results suggest that the comorbidity of these diseases is not influenced by common variants. The association between myopia and optic disc size is well known and validates this methodology.

Communicating innovation and sustainability in family businesses through successions

Project description:Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to the economy despite the survival rate becomes lower through generations. This study aims to develop a communication model suitable for SMEs during succession for innovation and business sustainability. Nine innovative manufacturing family SMEs in Thailand are selected using assembled multiple-case study method, and in-depth individual interviews are conducted using data triangulation method which the incumbents, successors, and long-serving non-family employees as participants from each business. There are two main findings. Issues regarding organizational innovation, social capital in the form of internal and external network relationships, traditional and territorial knowledge, succession planning and procedure, and sustainability-driven mindset should be communicated, formally or informally, during the succession process. Secondly, the incumbent’s contradiction between his intention and action, the successor’s ability and willingness, and the staff’s response to changes during the succession process, are the main communication barriers against achieving innovation and sustainability. By implementing the communication model to the family business, the incumbents and successors can maximize the business’s structure and resources to be better understood throughout the firm with the business maintaining or reinterpreting its cultures, values, and traditions to the next generation. The model allows family businesses to have better awareness in terms of innovation management, social capital, innovation with their background knowledge as capital, succession, and business sustainability. Successful communication of the topics and concepts during succession should raise the standard and competitiveness of family businesses domestically and internationally. Fathers' participation in the HPV vaccination decision-making process doesn't increase parents' intention to make daughters get the vaccine.

Project description:IntroductionThe HPV vaccination rate in Japan has been dismally low. Our previous survey work found that mothers in Japan, who have a strong influence over their daughters, often are receptive to the fathers' participation in the family's decision-making process about getting their daughter HPV vaccinated.MethodsWe conducted a survey to investigate the nature of the influence of fathers' participation on the mother's decision-making process. From an internet survey panel, we selected a pool of 1,499 eligible mothers who had 12-18 years old daughters. The mothers were randomized into three Groups. To the mothers in Group A, we gave an educational leaflet regarding HPV vaccination and a second leaflet which recommended that they talk with their husbands about the vaccination. To Group B, we gave only the educational leaflet. No leaflets were sent to Group C. A structured survey questionnaire was then distributed through the internet to the mothers.ResultsIn Groups A, B, and C, their intention to have their daughter receive the HPV vaccine was 21.6%, 20.7% and 8.2%, respectively. The percent of Group A mothers who thought their husband's opinion was important for when they made the decision was significantly higher (70%) than in Group B (56.6%) or Group C (47.1%).ConclusionsThe fathers' participation in the mothers' decision-making does not increase the likelihood of HPV vaccination for their daughters. On the other hand, the educational leaflet proved to be effective for this cause.

Do daughters really cause divorce? Stress, pregnancy, and family composition.

Project description:Provocative studies have reported that in the United States, marriages producing firstborn daughters are more likely to divorce than those producing firstborn sons. The findings have been interpreted as contemporary evidence of fathers' son preference. Our study explores the potential role of another set of dynamics that may drive these patterns: namely, selection into live birth. Epidemiological evidence indicates that the characteristic female survival advantage may begin before birth. If stress accompanying unstable marriages has biological effects on fecundity, a female survival advantage could generate an association between stability and the sex composition of offspring. Combining regression and simulation techniques to analyze real-world data, we ask, How much of the observed association between sex of the firstborn child and risk of divorce could plausibly be accounted for by the joint effects of female survival advantage and reduced fecundity associated with unstable marriage? Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79), we find that relationship conflict predicts the sex of children born after conflict was measured; conflict also predicts subsequent divorce. Conservative specification of parameters linking pregnancy characteristics, selection into live birth, and divorce are sufficient to generate a selection-driven association between offspring sex and divorce, which is consequential in magnitude. Our findings illustrate the value of demographic accounting of processes which occur before birth-a period when many outcomes of central interest in the population sciences begin to take shape.

Prolonged Exposure to Platelet Activating Factor Transforms Breast Epithelial Cells.

Project description:Lipid species are known to have various biological functions owing to their structural differences, and each of them possesses a specific role to play depending upon their location and distribution in the cell. Some of these lipids interact with proteins on the cell membrane and acts as second messengers. The level of lipid mediators is generally maintained in the cell by feedback mechanisms; however, their improper degradation or enhanced production leads to their accumulation in the tumor microenvironment and disturbs the homeostasis of the cell. Platelet activating factor (PAF) is a known phospholipid mediator secreted upon immunological challenges by platelets, neutrophils, basophils, and macrophages. PAF, as a potent inflammatory molecule, is well studied, and its role in various cancers and cardiovascular diseases has also been investigated. Interestingly, increased levels of PAF have been found in the blood plasma of smokers, and breast cancer cells have shown the accumulation of PAF in presence of cigarette smoke extract. This accumulation was found to increase tumor cell motility that in turn could promote metastasis. Beyond this, however, the effect of PAF on tumorigenesis has not yet been well explored. Here, we show that the continuous exposure of 3D breast acinar cultures to PAF resulted in the activation of various oncogenic signaling pathways leading to transformation. We also found that the presence of PAF in the micro-environment increased the expression of PAF receptor (PAF-R), which corroborated with the higher expression of PAF-R detected in some epithelial cancers, as per literature. Thus, this study impresses on the fact that the presence of PAF alters the cellular microenvironment and eventually triggers irreversible effects that can cumulatively lead to transformation.

Independent erosion of conserved transcription factor binding sites points to shared hindlimb, vision and external testes loss in different mammals.

Project description:Genetic variation in cis-regulatory elements is thought to be a major driving force in morphological and physiological changes. However, identifying transcription factor binding events that code for complex traits remains a challenge, motivating novel means of detecting putatively important binding events. Using a curated set of 1154 high-quality transcription factor motifs, we demonstrate that independently eroded binding sites are enriched for independently lost traits in three distinct pairs of placental mammals. We show that these independently eroded events pinpoint the loss of hindlimbs in dolphin and manatee, degradation of vision in naked mole-rat and star-nosed mole, and the loss of external testes in white rhinoceros and Weddell seal. We additionally show that our method may also be utilized with more than two species. Our study exhibits a novel methodology to detect cis-regulatory mutations which help explain a portion of the molecular mechanism underlying complex trait formation and loss.

An ? helix to ? barrel domain switch transforms the transcription factor RfaH into a translation factor.

Project description:NusG homologs regulate transcription and coupled processes in all living organisms. The Escherichia coli (E. coli) two-domain paralogs NusG and RfaH have conformationally identical N-terminal domains (NTDs) but dramatically different carboxy-terminal domains (CTDs), a ? barrel in NusG and an ? hairpin in RfaH. Both NTDs interact with elongating RNA polymerase (RNAP) to reduce pausing. In NusG, NTD and CTD are completely independent, and NusG-CTD interacts with termination factor Rho or ribosomal protein S10. In contrast, RfaH-CTD makes extensive contacts with RfaH-NTD to mask an RNAP-binding site therein. Upon RfaH interaction with its DNA target, the operon polarity suppressor (ops) DNA, RfaH-CTD is released, allowing RfaH-NTD to bind to RNAP. Here, we show that the released RfaH-CTD completely refolds from an all-? to an all-? conformation identical to that of NusG-CTD. As a consequence, RfaH-CTD binding to S10 is enabled and translation of RfaH-controlled operons is strongly potentiated. PAPERFLICK:

Unraveling the Role of Shared Vision and Trust in Constructive Conflict Management of Family Firms. An Empirical Study From a Mixed Methods Approach.

Project description:Family firms are a unique setting to study constructive conflict management due to the influence of family ties of the owning family imprinting a sense of common purpose and shared destiny, and high levels of trust. We study the relationship between shared vision and trust that intervene in the adoption of constructive conflict management. To achieve our purpose, we carried out a systematic indirect observation using a mixed methods approach. We used the narratives of 17 semi-structured interviews, audio-recorded and transcribed, of family and non-family managers or directors from five Spanish family firms in the siblings' partnership stage, combined with documentary data obtained from different sources. Intra- and inter-observer reliability were confirmed. Results show a dynamic relationship between shared vision and specific components of trust (benevolence and ability) at different levels of conflict management. We also provide evidence of specific processes of concurrence-seeking and open-mindedness in family and ownership forums accounting for the relevance of family governance in these type of organizations. Family firms are a sum of several subsystems which exhibit a particular resources configuration. This study sheds light on constructive conflict management in family firms opening interesting avenues for further research and offering practical implications to managers, owners, and advisors.

Differences between sons and daughters in the intergenerational transmission of wealth.

Project description:Persistent interest lies in gender inequality, especially with regard to the favouring of sons over daughters. Economists are concerned with how privilege is transmitted across generations, and anthropologists have long studied sex-biased inheritance norms. There has, however, been no focused cross-cultural investigation of how parent-offspring correlations in wealth vary by offspring sex. We estimate these correlations for 38 wealth measures, including somatic and relational wealth, from 15 populations ranging from hunter-gatherers to small-scale farmers. Although small sample sizes limit our statistical power, we find no evidence of ubiquitous male bias, at least as inferred from comparing parent-son and parent-daughter correlations. Rather we find wide variation in signatures of sex bias, with evidence of both son and daughter-biased transmission. Further, we introduce a model that helps pinpoint the conditions under which simple mid-point parent-offspring wealth correlations can reveal information about sex-biased parental investment. Our findings are relevant to the study of female-biased kinship by revealing just how little normative descriptors of kinship systems, such as patrilineal inheritance, capture intergenerational correlations in wealth, and how variable parent-son and parent-daughter correlations can be.
