A daily global mesoscale ocean eddy dataset from satellite altimetry.

ABSTRACT: Mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous coherent rotating structures of water with radial scales on the order of 100?kilometers. Eddies play a key role in the transport and mixing of momentum and tracers across the World Ocean. We present a global daily mesoscale ocean eddy dataset that contains ~45 million mesoscale features and 3.3 million eddy trajectories that persist at least two days as identified in the AVISO dataset over a period of 1993-2014. This dataset, along with the open-source eddy identification software, extract eddies with any parameters (minimum size, lifetime, etc.), to study global eddy properties and dynamics, and to empirically estimate the impact eddies have on mass or heat transport. Furthermore, our open-source software may be used to identify mesoscale features in model simulations and compare them to observed features. Finally, this dataset can be used to study the interaction between mesoscale ocean eddies and other components of the Earth System.

The near-global ocean mesoscale eddy atmospheric-oceanic-biological interaction observational dataset.

Project description:Amongst the variety of oceanic processes running the gamut of spatiotemporal scales, mesoscale eddies are the most common and often have region-specific characteristics. The large kinetic energy inherent to eddies themselves is a strong modulator of the global climate, ocean circulation, productivity, and freshwater transport. This study uses multi-source satellite remote sensing observation data to construct a multi-parameter eddy dataset for the 1993-2019 period, which differs significantly from a few of previous published eddy datasets that include only basic sea surface eddy physical features. Eddies within the dataset have life cycles of greater than four weeks, and their corresponding sea surface chlorophyll, sea surface temperature, and wind fields are provided. Atmospheric and oceanic variables are used to present a comprehensive picture of a given mesoscale eddy's impact on the local physical, but also biological environment. The dataset would find immense value in research on mesoscale eddies, their impact on the atmosphere, and related biological processes.

Global meridional eddy heat transport inferred from Argo and altimetry observations.

Project description:Proportion and pathways of the eddy-induced heat transport are critical in maintaining world's ocean and climate states. However, an observation-based three-dimensional picture of how oceanic eddies contribute to the global heat transport is yet not quantitatively specified, particularly due to insufficiency of data. Here, using refined methods, we have achieved this goal by analyzing millions of high-quality Argo hydrographic profiles and high-resolution satellite altimetric data. We first presented the spatial differences of individual eddies by reconstructing 254 representative eddies all over the ocean, and then calculated heat fluxes associated with eddies in 5°?×?5° boxes. It is revealed that all parameters of eddies vary significantly with both latitudes and longitudes, which is crucial in yielding spatially varying heat fluxes and transports. The eddies not only transport heat towards high latitudes (down-gradient), but also towards low latitudes (up-gradient), particularly at subsurface layers of mid-latitude northern Pacific Ocean and low-latitude Atlantic Ocean. The eddy heat transport is mainly confined in the upper 1000?m of the western part and mid-latitudes of the world's ocean basins, coinciding with maximum meridional temperature gradients. It peaks at 0.8 PW and 0.3 PW (1 PW?=?1015 W) at 45°S and 35°N, respectively, stronger than previous estimates based on model results, and accounts for about one half and one third of the estimated total oceanic heat transport at the same latitudes, respectively. In any location except for the areas associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the eddy stirring component is distinctly (1-10 times) larger than the eddy trapping component.

Lagrangian eddy kinetic energy of ocean mesoscale eddies and its application to the Northwestern Pacific.

Project description:Coherent oceanic mesoscale eddies with unique dynamical structures have great impacts on ocean transports and global climate. Eddy kinetic energy (EKE), derived from time-dependent circulation, is commonly used to study mesoscale eddies. However, there are three deficiencies of EKE when focusing on the analysis of coherent mesoscale eddies. Here, we propose a comprehensive concept-Lagrangian EKE (LEKE) as an additional metric which is a combination of gridded EKE calculated in Eulerian framework and tracked coherent mesoscale eddies in Lagrangian framework. Evidences suggest that LEKE can make up these deficiencies as an effective supplement. In this study, regional application over Northwestern Pacific Ocean is taken as an example. It clearly demonstrates that LEKE reveals more accurate and detailed characteristics of both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies than EKE when coherent mesoscale eddies are the specific focus, such as the variation rates of kinetic energy during the eddy propagation, spatial-temporal differences of kinetic energy between cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies. Overall, using LEKE to analyze coherent mesoscale eddies gives the rise to understand the spatial-temporal contrasts between eddies with different polarities, and provides a new perspective to recognize the crucial role played by coherent mesoscale eddies in the ocean.

Horizontal eddy energy flux in the world oceans diagnosed from altimetry data.

Project description:During the propagation of coherent mesoscale eddies, they directly or indirectly induce many effects and interactions at different scales, implying eddies are actually serving as a kind of energy carrier or energy source for these eddy-related dynamic processes. To quantify this dynamically significant energy flow, the multi-year averaged horizontal eddy energy fluxes (EEFs) were estimated by using satellite altimetry data and a two-layer model based on hydrographic climatology. There is a strong net westward transport of eddy energy estimated at the mean value of ~13.3 GW north of 5°N and ~14.6 GW at the band 5°S ~ 44°S in the Southern Hemisphere. However, poleward of 44°S east-propagating eddies carry their energy eastward with an averaged net flux of ~3.2 GW. If confirmed, it would signify that geostrophic eddies not only contain the most of oceanic kinetic energy (KE), but also carry and spread a significant amount of energy with them.

Scalable interpolation of satellite altimetry data with probabilistic machine learning.

Project description:We present GPSat; an open-source Python programming library for performing efficient interpolation of non-stationary satellite altimetry data, using scalable Gaussian process techniques. We use GPSat to generate complete maps of daily 50 km-gridded Arctic sea ice radar freeboard, and find that, relative to a previous interpolation scheme, GPSat offers a 504 × computational speedup, with less than 4 mm difference on the derived freeboards on average. We then demonstrate the scalability of GPSat through freeboard interpolation at 5 km resolution, and Sea-Level Anomalies (SLA) at the resolution of the altimeter footprint. Interpolated 5 km radar freeboards show strong agreement with airborne data (linear correlation of 0.66). Footprint-level SLA interpolation also shows improvements in predictive skill over linear regression. In this work, we suggest that GPSat could overcome the computational bottlenecks faced in many altimetry-based interpolation routines, and hence advance critical understanding of ocean and sea ice variability over short spatio-temporal scales.

Distinct iron cycling in a Southern Ocean eddy.

Project description:Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous in the iron-limited Southern Ocean, controlling ocean-atmosphere exchange processes, however their influence on phytoplankton productivity remains unknown. Here we probed the biogeochemical cycling of iron (Fe) in a cold-core eddy. In-eddy surface dissolved Fe (dFe) concentrations and phytoplankton productivity were exceedingly low relative to external waters. In-eddy phytoplankton Fe-to-carbon uptake ratios were elevated 2-6 fold, indicating upregulated intracellular Fe acquisition resulting in a dFe residence time of ~1 day. Heavy dFe isotope values were measured for in-eddy surface waters highlighting extensive trafficking of dFe by cells. Below the euphotic zone, dFe isotope values were lighter and coincident with peaks in recycled nutrients and cell abundance, indicating enhanced microbially-mediated Fe recycling. Our measurements show that the isolated nature of Southern Ocean eddies can produce distinctly different Fe biogeochemistry compared to surrounding waters with cells upregulating iron uptake and using recycling processes to sustain themselves.

A new, long-term daily satellite-based rainfall dataset for operational monitoring in Africa.

Project description:Rainfall information is essential for many applications in developing countries, and yet, continually updated information at fine temporal and spatial scales is lacking. In Africa, rainfall monitoring is particularly important given the close relationship between climate and livelihoods. To address this information gap, this paper describes two versions (v2.0 and v3.0) of the TAMSAT daily rainfall dataset based on high-resolution thermal-infrared observations, available from 1983 to the present. The datasets are based on the disaggregation of 10-day (v2.0) and 5-day (v3.0) total TAMSAT rainfall estimates to a daily time-step using daily cold cloud duration. This approach provides temporally consistent historic and near-real time daily rainfall information for all of Africa. The estimates have been evaluated using ground-based observations from five countries with contrasting rainfall climates (Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zambia) and compared to other satellite-based rainfall estimates. The results indicate that both versions of the TAMSAT daily estimates reliably detects rainy days, but have less skill in capturing rainfall amount-results that are comparable to the other datasets.

Ocean mesoscale mixing linked to climate variability.

Project description:Mesoscale turbulence in the ocean strongly affects the circulation, water mass formation, and transport of tracers. Little is known, however, about how mixing varies on climate timescales. We present the first time-resolved global dataset of lateral mesoscale eddy diffusivities at the ocean surface, obtained by applying the suppressed mixing length theory to satellite-observed velocities. We find interannual variability throughout the global ocean, regionally correlated with climate indices such as ENSO, NAO, DMI, and PDO. Changes in mixing length, driven by variations in the large-scale flow, often exceed the effect of variations in local eddy kinetic energy, previously thought of as the primary driver of variability in eddy mixing. This mechanism, not currently represented in global climate models, could have far-reaching consequences for the distribution of heat, salt, and carbon in the global ocean, as well as ecosystem dynamics and regional dynamics such as ENSO variance.
