The meaning and measurement of work fatigue: Development and evaluation of the Three-Dimensional Work Fatigue Inventory (3D-WFI).

ABSTRACT: Although work fatigue represents an important construct in several substantive areas, prior conceptual definitions and measures have been inadequate in a number of ways. The goals of the present study were to develop a conceptual definition and outline the desirable characteristics of a work fatigue measure, briefly examine several prior measures of work fatigue-related constructs, and develop and evaluate a new measure of work fatigue. The Three-Dimensional Work Fatigue Inventory (3D-WFI) provides separate and commensurate assessments of physical, mental, and emotional work fatigue. Results from a pilot study (n = 207) and a broader evaluative study of U.S. wage and salary workers (n = 2,477) suggest that the 3D-WFI is psychometrically sound and evinces a meaningful pattern of relations with variables that comprise the nomological network of work fatigue. As with all new measures, additional research is required to evaluate fully the utility of the 3D-WFI in research on work fatigue.

Project description:BackgroundRoot system architecture (RSA) is an essential characteristic for efficient water and nutrient absorption in terrestrial plants; its plasticity enables plants to respond to different soil environments. Better understanding of root plasticity is important in developing stress-tolerant crops. Non-invasive techniques that can measure roots in soils nondestructively, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), are useful to evaluate RSA plasticity. However, although RSA plasticity can be measured by tracking individual root growth, only a few methods are available for tracking individual roots from time-series three-dimensional (3D) images.ResultsWe developed a semi-automatic workflow that tracks individual root growth by vectorizing RSA from time-series 3D images via two major steps. The first step involves 3D alignment of the time-series RSA images by iterative closest point registration with point clouds generated by high-intensity particles in potted soils. This alignment ensures that the time-series RSA images overlap. The second step consists of backward prediction of vectorization, which is based on the phenomenon that the root length of the RSA vector at the earlier time point is shorter than that at the last time point. In other words, when CT scanning is performed at time point A and again at time point B for the same pot, the CT data and RSA vectors at time points A and B will almost overlap, but not where the roots have grown. We assumed that given a manually created RSA vector at the last time point of the time series, all RSA vectors except those at the last time point could be automatically predicted by referring to the corresponding RSA images. Using 21 time-series CT volumes of a potted plant of upland rice (Oryza sativa), this workflow revealed that the root elongation speed increased with age. Compared with a workflow that does not use backward prediction, the workflow with backward prediction reduced the manual labor time by 95%.ConclusionsWe developed a workflow to efficiently generate time-series RSA vectors from time-series X-ray CT volumes. We named this workflow 'RSAtrace4D' and are confident that it can be applied to the time-series analysis of RSA development and plasticity.

Project description:BackgroundThe volume and thickness of intravesical prostatic protrusion and other characteristics of benign prostatic hyperplasia have not been investigated. We determine the effects of age and prostate volume on anatomical features of benign prostatic hyperplasia using three-dimensional measurement in this study.MethodsThis retrospective study included a total of 98 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Three-dimensional models of prostate, central gland, peripheral zone, intravesical prostatic protrusion, prostatic urethra and bladder were reconstructed according to pelvic T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of these patients. The models were used to measure the intravesical prostatic protrusion volume, intravesical prostatic protrusion thickness, intravesical prostatic protrusion index, intravesical prostatic protrusion, prostate volume, peripheral zone volume, peripheral zone thickness, peripheral zone index, prostatic urethra thickness, the angle and distance of distal prostatic urethra with regard to coronal plane and sagittal plane and so on.ResultsIntravesical prostatic protrusion volume, intravesical prostatic protrusion thickness and peripheral zone volume of prostate volume >80 mL group were significantly higher than these in prostate volume <80 mL group (P<0.001, 0.01, 0.01, respectively). These parameters significantly increased with age (P<0.001, 0.01, 0.05, respectively). Peripheral zone index was significantly lower of prostate volume >80 mL group than these in prostate volume <80 mL group (P<0.05). Peripheral zone index significantly decreased with age (P<0.01). Intravesical prostatic protrusion index had no significant difference in all age groups. Peripheral zone thickness and prostatic urethra thickness had no significant difference in all groups. The distance and angle of distal prostatic urethra prostatic urethra with regard to coronal plane were significantly higher than these with regard to sagittal plane (both P<0.001).ConclusionsThe rearward slope of the prostatic urethra is greater than the left or right offset during the process of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Three-dimensional measurement provides good supports for further clinical and scientific research.

Project description:BackgroundEndometrial thickness is an essential factor affecting female fertility. Clinically, ultrasound imaging is the first choice for the examination of uterine and endometrial-related diseases. However, the boundary of some endometrial is challenging to distinguish due to the effects of image resolution and noise. In addition, the irregular shape of the endometrium makes it more difficult for doctors to measure its thickness. Through the automatic segmentation and extraction of the endometrium, the maximum thickness of the endometrium can be measured automatically and accurately. This provides a quantitative index for doctors to use diagnostically.MethodsIn this study, 85 cases of three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound (3D TVUS) images were collected retrospectively, including 75 cases of endometrial adhesion and 10 cases of non-adhesion. Firstly, the ultrasound images were filtered by block-matching and 3D filtering and speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion (SRAD). These two kinds of filtered images were combined with the original image to construct a three-channel image. Then, the augmented images were sent to 3D U-Net to realize endometrium segmentation. The performance of the segmentation models was evaluated using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), Jaccard, sensitivity, and 95th percentile Hausdorff distance (HD95). Finally, the medial axis transform was used to extract the endometrial centerline, based on which the endometrial thickness could be automatically measured.ResultsThe endometrium segmentation method proposed in this paper achieved 90.83% in Dice, 83.35% in Jaccard, 90.85% in sensitivity, and 12.75 mm in HD95 in the testing set. Taking the doctor's manual measurement as the gold standard, 94.20% of the automatic endometrial thickness measurements based on the segmentation results were within the allowable error range of clinical diagnosis.ConclusionsThis paper presents an automatic endometrium segmentation and thickness measurement method for 3D TVUS images. The experimental results show that this method has high segmentation accuracy to recognize endometrial adhesion images. Furthermore, the thickness measurement based on the segmentation results has high reliability and repeatability, and the accuracy can meet clinical diagnosis needs.
