An active atmospheric methane sink in high Arctic mineral cryosols.

ABSTRACT: Methane (CH4) emission by carbon-rich cryosols at the high latitudes in Northern Hemisphere has been studied extensively. In contrast, data on the CH4 emission potential of carbon-poor cryosols is limited, despite their spatial predominance. This work employs CH4 flux measurements in the field and under laboratory conditions to show that the mineral cryosols at Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian high Arctic consistently consume atmospheric CH4. Omics analyses present the first molecular evidence of active atmospheric CH4-oxidizing bacteria (atmMOB) in permafrost-affected cryosols, with the prevalent atmMOB genotype in our acidic mineral cryosols being closely related to Upland Soil Cluster α. The atmospheric (atm) CH4 uptake at the study site increases with ground temperature between 0 °C and 18 °C. Consequently, the atm CH4 sink strength is predicted to increase by a factor of 5-30 as the Arctic warms by 5-15 °C over a century. We demonstrate that acidic mineral cryosols are a previously unrecognized potential of CH4 sink that requires further investigation to determine its potential impact on larger scales. This study also calls attention to the poleward distribution of atmMOB, as well as to the potential influence of microbial atm CH4 oxidation, in the context of regional CH4 flux models and global warming.

Project description:Frenulate species were identified from a high Arctic methane seep area on Vestnesa Ridge, western Svalbard margin (79°N, Fram Strait) based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI). Two species were found: Oligobrachia haakonmosbiensis, and a new, distinct, and undescribed Oligobrachia species. The new species adds to the cryptic Oligobrachia species complex found at high latitude methane seeps in the north Atlantic and the Arctic. However, this species displays a curled tube morphology and light brown coloration that could serve to distinguish it from other members of the complex. A number of single tentacle individuals were recovered which were initially thought to be members of the only unitentaculate genus, Siboglinum. However, sequencing revealed them to be the new species and the single tentacle morphology, in addition to thin, colorless, and ringless tubes indicate that they are juveniles. This is the first known report of juveniles of northern Oligobrachia. Since the juveniles all appeared to be at about the same developmental stage, it is possible that reproduction is either synchronized within the species, or that despite continuous reproduction, settlement, and growth in the sediment only takes place at specific periods. The new find of the well-known species O. haakonmosbiensis extends its range from the Norwegian Sea to high latitudes of the Arctic in the Fram Strait. We suggest bottom currents serve as the main distribution mechanism for high latitude Oligobrachia species and that water depth constitutes a major dispersal barrier. This explains the lack of overlap between the distributions of northern Oligobrachia species despite exposure to similar current regimes. Our results point toward a single speciation event within the Oligobrachia clade, and we suggest that this occurred in the late Neogene, when topographical changes occurred and exchanges between Arctic and North Atlantic water masses and subsequent thermohaline circulation intensified.

Project description:Glacier forefield soils can provide a substantial sink for atmospheric CH4, facilitated by aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB). However, MOB activity, abundance, and community structure may be affected by soil age, MOB location in different forefield landforms, and temporal fluctuations in soil physical parameters. We assessed the spatial and temporal variability of atmospheric-CH4 oxidation in an Alpine glacier forefield during the snow-free season of 2013. We quantified CH4 flux in soils of increasing age and in different landforms (sandhill, terrace, and floodplain forms) by using soil gas profile and static flux chamber methods. To determine MOB abundance and community structure, we employed pmoA gene-based quantitative PCR and targeted amplicon sequencing. Uptake of CH4 increased in magnitude and decreased in variability with increasing soil age. Sandhill soils exhibited CH4 uptake rates ranging from -3.7 to -0.03 mg CH4 m-2 day-1 Floodplain and terrace soils exhibited lower uptake rates and even intermittent CH4 emissions. Linear mixed-effects models indicated that soil age and landform were the dominating factors shaping CH4 flux, followed by cumulative rainfall (weighted sum ≤4 days prior to sampling). Of 31 MOB operational taxonomic units retrieved, ∼30% were potentially novel, and ∼50% were affiliated with upland soil clusters gamma and alpha. The MOB community structures in floodplain and terrace soils were nearly identical but differed significantly from the highly variable sandhill soil communities. We concluded that soil age and landform modulate the soil CH4 sink strength in glacier forefields and that recent rainfall affects its short-term variability. This should be taken into account when including this environment in future CH4 inventories.IMPORTANCE Oxidation of methane (CH4) in well-drained, "upland" soils is an important mechanism for the removal of this potent greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. It is largely mediated by aerobic, methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB). Whereas there is abundant information on atmospheric-CH4 oxidation in mature upland soils, little is known about this important function in young, developing soils, such as those found in glacier forefields, where new sediments are continuously exposed to the atmosphere as a result of glacial retreat. In this field-based study, we investigated the spatial and temporal variability of atmospheric-CH4 oxidation and associated MOB communities in Alpine glacier forefield soils, aiming at better understanding the factors that shape the sink for atmospheric CH4 in this young soil ecosystem. This study contributes to the knowledge on the dynamics of atmospheric-CH4 oxidation in developing upland soils and represents a further step toward the inclusion of Alpine glacier forefield soils in global CH4 inventories.
