Intrinsic Polarization and Tunable Color of Electroluminescence from Organic Single Crystal-based Light-Emitting Devices.

ABSTRACT: A single crystal-based organic light-emitting device (OLED) with intrinsically polarized and color-tunable electroluminescence (EL) has been demonstrated without any subsequent treatment. The polarization ratio of 5:1 for the transversal-electric (TE) and transversal-magnetic (TM) polarization at the emission peak of 575 nm, and 4.7:1 for the TM to TE polarization at the emission peak of 635 nm, respectively, have been obtained. The emitting color is tunable between yellow, yellow-green and orange by changing the polarization angle. The polarized EL and the polarization-induced color tunability can be attributed to the anisotropic microcavity formed by the BP3T crystal with uniaxial alignment of the molecules.

Large Size Color-tunable Electroluminescence from Cationic Iridium Complexes-based Light-emitting Electrochemical Cells.

Project description:Solution-processable light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) with simple device architecture have become an attractive candidate for application in next generation lighting and flat-panel displays. Herein, single layer LECs employing two cationic Ir(III) complexes showing highly efficient blue-green and yellow electroluminescence with peak current efficiency of 31.6 cd A(-1) and 40.6 cd A(-1), respectively, have been reported. By using both complexes in the device, color-tunable LECs with a single spectral peak in the wavelength range from 499 to 570 nm were obtained by varying their rations. In addition, the fabrication of efficient LECs was demonstrated based on low cost doctor-blade coating technique, which was compatible with the roll to roll fabrication process for the large size production. In this work, for the first time, 4 inch LEC devices by doctor-blade coating were fabricated, which exhibit the efficiencies of 23.4 cd A(-1) and 25.4 cd A(-1) for the blue-green and yellow emission, respectively. The exciting results indicated that highly efficient LECs with controllable color could be realized and find practical application in large size lighting and displays.

Electroluminescence Stability of Organic Light-Emitting Devices Utilizing a Nondoped Pt-Based Emission Layer.

Project description:We study the effects of using an emitting material (Pt(II) bis(3-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolate-Pt(fppz)2) characterized by a preferred horizontal dipole alignment and a nearly unitary quantum yield regardless of concentration on the lifetime of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Using such a material as a dopant in increasingly higher concentrations is found to lead to an increase in device stability, a trend that is different from that commonly observed with conventional OLED guests. The results are consistent with the newly discovered exciton-polaron-induced aggregation degradation mechanism of OLED materials. When this emitter is used as a neat emission layer, the material is already in a highly aggregated state, and the device is no longer affected by exciton-polaron interactions. The results demonstrate the potential stability benefits of using such materials in OLEDs.

The fabrication of color-tunable organic light-emitting diode displays via solution processing.

Project description:Electroluminescent devices based on organic semiconductors have attracted significant attention owing to their promising applications in flat-panel displays. The conventional display pixel consisting of side-by-side arrayed red, green and blue subpixels represents the mature technology but bears an intrinsic deficiency of a low pixel density. Constructing an individual color-tunable pixel that comprises vertically stacked subpixels is considered an advanced technology. Although color-tunable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated using the vacuum deposition of small molecules, the solution processing of conjugated polymers would enable a much simpler and inexpensive manufacturing process. Here we present the all-solution processing of color-tunable OLEDs comprising two vertically stacked polymer emitters. A thin layer of highly conducting and transparent silver nanowires is introduced as the intermediate charge injection contact, which allows the emission spectrum and intensity of the tandem devices to be seamlessly manipulated. To demonstrate a viable application of this technology, a 4-by-4 pixelated matrix color-tunable display was fabricated.

Molecular doped, color-tunable, high-mobility, emissive, organic semiconductors for light-emitting transistors.

Project description:Developing high-mobility emissive organic semiconductors with tunable colors is crucial for organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), a pivotal component of integrated optoelectronic devices, but remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate a series of color-tunable, high-mobility, emissive, organic semiconductors via molecular doping with a high-mobility organic semiconductor, 2,6-diphenylanthracene, as the host. The well-matched molecular structures and sizes with efficient energy transfer between the host and guest enable the intrinsically high charge transport with tunable colors. High mobility with the highest value >2 cm2 V-1 s-1 and strong emission with photoluminescence quantum yield >15.8% are obtained for these molecular-doped organic semiconductors. Last, a large color gamut for constructed OLETs is up to 59% National Television System Committee standard, meanwhile with an extremely high current density approaching 326.4 kA cm-2, showing great potential for full-color smart display, organic electrically pumped lasers and other related logic circuitries.

High efficiency blue organic light-emitting diodes with below-bandgap electroluminescence.

Project description:Blue organic light-emitting diodes require high triplet interlayer materials, which induce large energetic barriers at the interfaces resulting in high device voltages and reduced efficiencies. Here, we alleviate this issue by designing a low triplet energy hole transporting interlayer with high mobility, combined with an interface exciplex that confines excitons at the emissive layer/electron transporting material interface. As a result, blue thermally activated delay fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes with a below-bandgap turn-on voltage of 2.5 V and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 41.2% were successfully fabricated. These devices also showed suppressed efficiency roll-off maintaining an EQE of 34.8% at 1000 cd m-2. Our approach paves the way for further progress through exploring alternative device engineering approaches instead of only focusing on the demanding synthesis of organic compounds with complex structures.

Hybrid Color-Tunable Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes Using Electrospraying.

Project description:This paper proposes a new paradigm in polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) fabrication by using a uniform electrosprayed microparticle film as the active layer. Among the seven electrospraying parameters analyzed, three crucial parameters are statistically identified and optimized to obtain thin electrosprayed microparticle layers. Using optimized electrospraying conditions, single-color red-emitting PLED (MEH-PPV) with a peak current density of 16.1 mA/mm2 under a 13.5 V bias and a peak external quantum efficiency of 3.2% are successfully fabricated. Finally, a combinatorial approach is implemented using both MEH-PPV (red-emitting) and F8BT (green-emitting) polymer microparticles at different mixing ratios to tune the emission spectrum of the devices. As such, it has been demonstrated that hybrid multilayer films using different organic materials with nonorthogonal solvents can be produced using this new approach. The parameter analysis and color-tunable properties pave the way towards white light PLED fabrication.

Efficient and chromaticity-stable flexible white organic light-emitting devices based on organic-inorganic hybrid color-conversion electrodes.

Project description:We have developed a novel organic-inorganic hybrid color conversion electrode composed of Ag NWs/poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) via a solution process, which is the first report on a color conversion electrode for applications in flexible optoelectronics. Using the Ag NWs/MEH-PPV composite film as the anode on polyethylene terephthalate substrate and combined with a blue organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) unit employing bis(3,5-difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl-(2-carboxypyridyl)iridium(iii)) (Flrpic) in 1,3-bis(carbazol-9-yl)benzene (mCP) as the emitting layer, a highly efficient and chromaticity-stable color-conversion flexible white OLEDs (WOLEDs) is achieved with a maximum current efficiency of 20.5 cd A-1. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency reported for color-conversion based flexible WOLEDs. Our work provides an approach to achieving high-performance flexible WOLEDs devices and demonstrates great potential for lighting and display applications.

Circularly polarized electroluminescence from a single-crystal organic microcavity light-emitting diode based on photonic spin-orbit interactions.

Project description:Circularly polarized (CP) electroluminescence from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has aroused considerable attention for their potential in future display and photonic technologies. The development of CP-OLEDs relies largely on chiral-emitters, which not only remain rare owing to difficulties in design and synthesis but also limit the performance of electroluminescence. When the polarization (pseudospin) degrees of freedom of a photon interact with its orbital angular momentum, photonic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) emerges such as Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) effect. Here, we demonstrate a chiral-emitter-free microcavity CP-OLED with a high dissymmetry factor (gEL) and high luminance by embedding a thin two-dimensional organic single crystal (2D-OSC) between two silver layers which serve as two metallic mirrors forming a microcavity and meanwhile also as two electrodes in an OLED architecture. In the presence of the RD effect, the SOIs in the birefringent 2D-OSC microcavity result in a controllable spin-splitting with CP dispersions. Thanks to the high emission efficiency and high carrier mobility of the OSC, chiral-emitter-free CP-OLEDs have been demonstrated exhibiting a high gEL of 1.1 and a maximum luminance of about 60000 cd/m2, which places our device among the best performing CP-OLEDs. This strategy opens an avenue for practical applications towards on-chip microcavity CP-OLEDs.

Sub-turn-on exciton quenching due to molecular orientation and polarization in organic light-emitting devices.

Project description:The efficiency of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) is often limited by roll-off, where efficiency decreases with increasing bias. In most OLEDs, roll-off primarily occurs due to exciton quenching, which is commonly assumed to be active only above device turn-on. Below turn-on, exciton and charge carrier densities are often presumed to be too small to cause quenching. Using lock-in detection of photoluminescence, we find that this assumption is not generally valid; luminescence can be quenched by >20% at biases below turn-on. We show that this low-bias quenching is due to hole accumulation induced by intrinsic polarization of the electron transport layer (ETL). Further, we demonstrate that selection of nonpolar ETLs or heating during deposition minimizes these losses, leading to efficiency enhancements of >15%. These results reveal design rules to optimize efficiency, clarify how ultrastable glasses improve OLED performance, and demonstrate the importance of quantifying exciton quenching at low bias.

Identifying and Reducing Interfacial Losses to Enhance Color-Pure Electroluminescence in Blue-Emitting Perovskite Nanoplatelet Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Perovskite nanoplatelets (NPls) hold promise for light-emitting applications, having achieved photoluminescence quantum efficiencies approaching unity in the blue wavelength range, where other metal-halide perovskites have typically been ineffective. However, the external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of blue-emitting NPl light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have reached only 0.12%. In this work, we show that NPl LEDs are primarily limited by a poor electronic interface between the emitter and hole injector. We show that the NPls have remarkably deep ionization potentials (≥6.5 eV), leading to large barriers for hole injection, as well as substantial nonradiative decay at the NPl/hole-injector interface. We find that an effective way to reduce these nonradiative losses is by using poly(triarylamine) interlayers, which lead to an increase in the EQE of the blue (464 nm emission wavelength) and sky-blue (489 nm emission wavelength) LEDs to 0.3% and 0.55%, respectively. Our work also identifies the key challenges for further efficiency increases.
