Translation of aberrant or problematic mRNAs can cause ribosome stalling which leads to the production of truncated or defective proteins. Therefore, cells evolved cotranslational quality control mechanisms that eliminate these transcripts and target arrested nascent polypeptides for proteasomal degradation.
