Project description:Coffee contains caffeine and diterpenes that were associated with decreased breast cancer risk, but results remained inconsistent. The study purpose was to investigate the associations between coffee products and breast cancer risk among Hong Kong Chinese women. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study in three public hospitals. 2169 Chinese women aged 24-84 years old were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire with questions asking types, cups and duration on coffee drinking. We used unconditional multivariate logistic regression to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for breast cancer risk with different coffee products. 238 (20.6%) cases and 179 (17.7%) controls are habitual coffee drinkers. No association was found between overall coffee drinking and breast cancer risk. Compared to the non-habitual coffee drinkers, women who consumed instant coffee (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.10-2.03) were significantly associated with an increased breast cancer risk. Women who drank brewed coffee (AOR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.28-0.82) were negatively associated with breast cancer risk. A positive association between instant coffee and breast cancer risk was observed, contradicted to the outcomes of drinking brewed coffee. Larger studies are warranted to ascertain the role of different types of coffee products in breast cancer risk.

Project description:The prevalence of sarcopenia is increasing in aging populations, so prevention is critical. Vitamins (A, C, E and carotenoids) modify skeletal muscle via protein and collagen synthesis and anti-inflammatory activities. Previous studies have not investigated intake of these vitamins in relation to sarcopenic indices in both younger and older-aged women. Indices of skeletal muscle mass (as fat-free mass (FFM) relative to body size) were measured using DXA and leg explosive power (LEP) using the Nottingham Power Rig in 2570 women aged 18-79 years. Adjusted measures of skeletal muscle were calculated according to quintiles of vitamin C, E, retinol and carotenoid intake, derived from Food Frequency Questionnaires, after stratification by age. Higher vitamin C intake was associated with significantly higher indices of FFM and LEP, (Q5-Q1 = 2.0-12.8%, P < 0.01-0.02). Intakes of total and individual carotenoids were significantly associated with indices of FFM and LEP (Q5-Q1 = 1.0-7.5%). Vitamin E was significantly associated with FFM% and FFMBMI only. In mutually adjusted analysis with vitamin C, total carotene, vitamin E and protein in the model, the strongest associations were with vitamin C. These associations were stronger in younger women (< 65 years). For the first time, our research shows higher dietary intakes of antioxidant vitamins, particularly vitamin C, is associated with higher skeletal muscle mass and power in free-living women. These findings have relevance for the treatment and prevention of frailty and sarcopenia throughout adulthood.

Project description:Background Dietary antioxidants have long been thought to be likely to prevent the development of gliomas. Previous studies have reported vitamin A, C, and E protective effects against gliomas. B vitamins, one of the main vitamins in the diet, are closely related to human health, but the association with gliomas has rarely been reported. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between five B vitamins and glioma. Methods In this Chinese population-based case–control study, 506 glioma cases and 506 matched (age and sex) controls were included. The dietary intake of study participants was assessed using a valid 111-item food frequency questionnaire. The intake of five B vitamins was calculated based on participants’ dietary information from the food frequency questionnaire. The logistic regression model was used to examine the association between B vitamins and glioma, and the restriction cubic spline evaluated the dose–response relationship between the two. Results After adjusting for confounding factors, thiamine (OR = 0.09, 95%CI: 0.05–0.20), riboflavin (OR = 0.12, 95%CI: 0.06–0.25), nicotinic acid (OR = 0.24, 95%CI: 0.12–0.47), folate (OR = 0.07, 95%CI: 0.03–0.15) and biotin (OR = 0.14, 95%CI: 0.07–0.30) in the highest tertile were associated with a significantly decreased risk of glioma compared with the lowest tertile. The results of thiamine and biotin in glioma with different pathological types and grades were different. The restricted cubic spline function showed significant dose–response relationships between the intake of five B vitamins and the risk of glioma. When B vitamins exceeded a specific intake, the risk of glioma did not change. Conclusion Our study suggests that higher dietary intake of thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, and folate are associated with a decreased risk of glioma, but the results of biotin are not consistent among different populations. In the future, prospective studies should be conducted better to validate the effects of B vitamins on gliomas.

Project description:BackgroundInterleukin-1β (IL-1B) has been recognized as a pro-inflammatory cytokine and associated with tumorigenesis. We aimed to evaluate the contribution of IL-1B polymorphisms to the susceptibility of cervical cancer in Chinese Uygur population.MethodsSeven variants were genotyped by Agena MassARRAY platform in 267 cervical cancer patients and 302 healthy controls. Allelic, genotypic, and haplotypic association analyses adjusted for age were investigated using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). GEPIA and UALCAN databases were used to evaluate expression and prognostic of IL-1B gene in cervical cancer.ResultsOur result revealed IL-1B rs1143627-AA (OR = 1.98, p = 0.029) and rs16944-GG (OR = 2.01, p = 0.025) was associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer. Besides, we also found two protective single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs3136558 (OR = 0.63, p = 0.011) and rs1143630 (OR = 0.63, p = 0.019). Haplotype ″TGA″ in the block (rs1143630, rs1143627, and rs16944) significantly decreased the susceptibility of cervical cancer (OR = 0.53, p = 0.0007). IL-1B mRNA level was up-regulated in the cervical cancer patients, which was related with poor prognosis in silico.ConclusionsFor the first time, our results provide evidence on polymorphism of IL-1B gene associated with cervical cancer risk in Chinese Uygur population.

Project description:ObjectiveTo investigate the associations between serum vitamin D, calcium and uterine fibroids in a Chinese female population.MethodsIn this case-control study, adult female patients with fibroids (cases) were compared with females without fibroids (controls) in terms of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and calcium levels.ResultsOut of 546 total participants (mean age, 41.68 ± 5.99 years; 279 with fibroids and 267 without fibroids), only 232 had serum 25OHD levels above the sufficient threshold (>20 ng/ml). In addition, females with fibroids had lower serum 25OHD levels versus those without fibroids. The prevalence of fibroids in females with deficient (<12 ng/ml) and insufficient (12-20 ng/ml) 25OHD levels were significantly higher than in females with sufficient (>20 ng/ml) 25OHD levels. Serum calcium levels were within normal range in both groups.ConclusionHypovitaminosis D was highly prevalent among a population of Chinese females of reproductive-age, and serum 25OHD levels were lower in female patients with fibroids.

Project description:Background and aimsDomestic violence (DV) are one of the important risk factors for women's health outcomes. The aim of this study was explored the risk of DV association with the poor pregnancy outcomes (PPOs), including premature delivery, abortion, and stillbirth.MethodsA nested case-control study was applied. Data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were collected from 2000 to 2015. A total of 41,730 participants were included in this study, including 8,346 participants in the case group and 33,384 age- and index year-matched control group. Assessments of DA and PPOs were determined according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision. We conducted a conditional logistic regression analysis to estimate the effect of DV on PPOs.ResultsThe mean age was 35.53 in the 41,730 female participants. The overall incidence rate of PPOs of the participants, who had experienced DV, was 84.05 per 100,000 person-years. which was significantly higher than that for the controls (18.19 per 100,000 person-years). The risk of PPOs was higher in the participants who had experienced DV than in the controls (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3.31; 95% confidence interval [CI] [95% CI]: 2.83-3.86), including for premature delivery (AOR = 3.57; 95% CI: 3.05-4.17), abortion (AOR = 3.31; 95% CI: 2.83-3.86) and stillbirth (AOR = 2.98; 95% CI: 2.55-3.47). The results showed that the longer a participant has been suffering DV, the risk of PPOs was higher.ConclusionsPresent results reaved the risk of PPOs associated with DV. Especially, the longer a woman has been experiencing DV, the risk of PPOs was higher, showed a dose-response effect.

Project description:Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a proinflammatory cytokine that is associated with inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and even tumors. Previous studies revealed that a large group of human malignant tumors have abnormally high IL-17 expression. In the present study, we analyzed two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL17A (rs2275913) and IL17F (rs763780) in 311 cervical cancer patients and 463 controls using TaqMan assays. Our results indicated that the frequencies of AA genotype and A allele of rs2275913 were significantly different between the cervical cancer patients and controls (P = 0.008, OR = 1.32, 95% CI, 1.07-1.62). Stratified analyses revealed that the polymorphism of rs2275913 was also associated with positive peritumor intravascular cancer emboli and high clinical stage. The genotype and allele frequencies of rs763780 did not show any difference between patients and controls or relate to patient clinical characteristics. Collectively, these findings suggested that IL17 gene polymorphism rs2275913 was associated with the susceptibility as well as positive peritumor intravascular cancer emboli and high clinical stage of cervical cancer in Chinese women.

Project description:Many susceptibility genes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Fucosyltransferase 2 (FUT2) and FUT3 genes are related to IBD. This study aimed to investigate whether these genes correlated with the susceptibility to AS. Questionnaires of 673 patients with AS, and peripheral blood specimens of the patients and 687 healthy controls were collected. FUT2 and FUT3 genes were genotyped using the SNPscan method. Frequency differences of the genes at different levels, haplotypes, and interactions were analyzed. No frequency differences were found between the cases and the controls in all the genotypes and the alleles of rs1047781, rs1800028, rs1800030, and rs812936. For rs28362459, a significant difference in allele frequencies was observed in the total participants between the groups [χ2 = 7.515, Pcorrected = 0.030; adjusted odds ratio (ORadjusted)G/T = 0.782; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.650-0.941]. The frequencies of haplotypes TT (rs812936-rs28362459) (χ2 = 5.663, Ppermutation = 0.039) and TG (rs812936-rs28362459) (χ2 = 7.456, Ppermutation = 0.013) in the total participants, and TG (rs812936-rs28362459) in the female subgroup (χ2 = 5.624, Ppermutation = 0.047) showed significant differences between the cases and the controls. No frequency differences at the phenotypic level were found. Two-factor interactions were observed between rs28362459-TG and age, rs28362459-TG and sex, rs28362459 and rs1047781, and the Lewis and secretor status. Rs28362459-G was related to some aggravated symptoms of AS (all Pcorrected < 0.05). These findings indicated that FUT3 polymorphisms were associated with human predisposition to AS at the allele and haplotype level. Rs28362459-G might decrease the susceptibility to AS, but aggravate relevant symptoms.

Project description:BackgroundChina has undergone a significant socioeconomic transformation over the past few decades due to the implementation of family planning policies. These societal changes have resulted in an increased susceptibility among females to developing cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). Unfortunately, studies investigating the correlation between family planning policies in China and the incidence of CMD remain scarce.MethodsData from 1,226 females, aged 30 years or older with ≥ 1 live birth, undergoing routine physical examinations between January 2018 and December 2021 were collected, and they were grouped by number of live births 1, 2, and ≥ 3. A binary logistic regression model was employed to examine the association between the number of live births with CMD. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis was performed to elucidate the impact of the implementation of family planning policies with CMD.ResultsWomen with live births ≥ 3 tended to be older, had higher gravidities, a greater proportion of central obesity, general obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (all P < 0.05). Across the three groups (live birth = 1, =2 and ≥ 3), the odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI for obesity were: 1.00, 3.32 (2.36-4.69), and 5.73 (3.79-8.68); for dyslipidemia were: 1.00, 1.75 (1.29-2.39), and 2.02 (1.38-2.94); and for CMD were: 1.00, 1.91 (1.44-2.54), and 2.15 (1.46-3.15), respectively (all P < 0.05). In addition, based on the different periods of the childbearing policy in China, a subgroup analysis (where age was divided into ≤ 45, 45-65, and ≥ 65 years old) found that each additional live birth increased the prevalence risk of obesity and CMD in the younger generations, while hypertension and dyslipidemia in the elder generation.ConclusionsHigher live births are positively associated with the prevalence of CMD among women in Southwest China. Moreover, giving birth after the implementation of the one-child policy tends to have a higher risk of developing CMD.

Project description:BackgroundVitamins are involved in various human physiological and biochemical mechanisms due to their antioxidant properties and their ability to enhance the immune response. Deficiency of some serum vitamins has been reported to be associated with an increased risk of developing cancer, including thyroid cancer. However, medical literature dealing with cholecalciferol supplementation was not able to show the potential of this intervention in cancer prevention. The aim of this paper is to highlight the association between lower serum vitamins levels and papillary thyroid cancer occurrence.MethodsThis case-control study was conducted between September 2018 and October 2019. Cases were defined as patients with histologically diagnosed papillary thyroid cancer who underwent thyroidectomy were retrospectively recruited and serum levels of various vitamins were assessed by examining their relationships with clinical, pathological and molecular data (n=51). Controls matched on sex and thyroid surgery were randomly selected from the same population (n=49).ResultsIn this study, serum concentrations of vitamins A and E in neoplastic patients were significantly lower than in controls (1.40 vs. 1.78, P<0.003 and 23.9 vs. 29.1, P<0.003, respectively). Serum concentrations of vitamin D and methylmalonic acid were borderline significantly low (15.6 vs. 17.9, P=0.06 and 100.3 vs. 110.4, P=0.055, respectively), while homocysteine was statistically similar in the two groups. Furthermore, serum vitamin levels were compared with the pathological characteristics of cancer patients, and vitamin D concentrations were significantly lower in BRAF-positive than in BRAF-negative neoplastic patients (8.2 vs. 16.0, P=0.021). On the other hand, no significant differences were observed in the correlation between serum levels of vitamins and other pathological characteristics, in particular with regard to lymph node metastases.ConclusionsIn conclusion, albeit with the analysis of a limited sample, this study highlighted the phenomenon that deficiencies in vitamins A and E can be associated with a higher frequency of occurrence of papillary thyroid cancer.
