We show that for two weakly coupled identical neuronal oscillators with strictly positive phase resetting curve, isochronous synchrony can only be seen in the absence of noise and an arbitrarily weak noise can destroy entrainment and generate intermittent phase slips. Small inhomogeneity-mismatch in the intrinsic firing rate of the neurons-can stabilize the phase locking and lead to more precise relative spike timing of the two neurons. Project description:Inhomogeneous electronic states resulting from entangled spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated electron materials; such behavior has been observed in many classes of d-electron materials, including the high-Tc copper-oxide superconductors, manganites, and most recently the iron–pnictide superconductors. The complexity generated by competing phases in these materials constitutes a considerable theoretical challenge—one that still defies a complete description. Here, we report a manifestation of electronic inhomogeneity in a strongly correlated f-electron system, using CeCoIn5 as an example. A thermodynamic analysis of its superconductivity, combined with nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements, shows that nonmagnetic impurities (Y, La, Yb, Th, Hg, and Sn) locally suppress unconventional superconductivity, generating an inhomogeneous electronic “Swiss cheese” due to disrupted periodicity of the Kondo lattice. Our analysis may be generalized to include related systems, suggesting that electronic inhomogeneity should be considered broadly in Kondo lattice materials.

Project description:We report observation of a radial dependence in the magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially strained CoFe2O4 nanopillars in a BaTiO3 matrix. This archetypal example of a multiferroic heterostructure with a self-assembling three-dimensional architecture possesses significant out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy originates from the large magnetostriction of CoFe2O4 and the state of stress within the nanocomposite. Magnetometry suggests the existence of two magnetic phases with different anisotropies. Micromagnetic simulations of a core-shell magnetic anisotropy qualitatively reproduce features of the magnetic hysteresis and elucidate the magnetization reversal mechanism: The magnetization initially reorients within the pillar core, followed by that of the shell. This is consistent with polarized small-angle neutron scattering which can be described by a CoFe2O4 magnetization that is nonuniform on nanometer length scales. As the length scale of inhomogeneity of the magnetic anisotropy is similar to estimates of the relaxation of the displacement field from the CoFe2O4-BaTiO3 interface, stress and its influence on structure provide an important route to new functionality of vertically aligned nanopillars for applications in low-power memory, computing, and sensing.

Project description:In this report we discuss the effect of radiofrequency field (RF) inhomogeneity on cross-polarization (CP) under magic-angle spinning (MAS) by reviewing the dependence of the CP-detected signal intensity as a function of the position in the sample space. We introduce a power-function model to quantify the position-dependent RF-amplitude profile. The applicability of this model is experimentally verified by nutation spectra obtained by direct signal detection, as well as by CPMAS signal detection, in two commercial MAS probes with different degrees of RF inhomogeneity. A conclusion is that substantial sections of a totally filled rotor, even in a probe with rather good homogeneity, do not contribute at all to the detected spectra. The consequence is that in CPMAS-based recoupling experiments, such as the CP-with-variable-contact-time (CPVC), spatial selectivity of the Hartmann-Hahn matching condition overcomes complications that could be caused by RF inhomogeneity permitting determination of accurate spectral parameters even in cases with high inhomogeneity.

Project description:An object that is immersed in a fluid and approaching a substrate may find a potential energy minimum at a certain distance due to the balance between attractive and repulsive Casimir-Lifshitz forces, a phenomenon referred to as quantum trapping. This equilibrium depends on the relative values of the dielectric functions of the materials involved. Herein, we study quantum trapping effects in planar nanocomposite materials and demonstrate that they are strongly dependent on the characteristics of the spatial inhomogeneity. As a model case, we consider spherical particles embedded in an otherwise homogeneous material. We propose an effective medium approximation that accounts for the effect of inclusions and find that an unprecedented and counterintuitive intense repulsive Casimir-Lifshitz force arises as a result of the strong optical scattering and absorption size-dependent resonances caused by their presence. Our results imply that the proper analysis of quantum trapping effects requires comprehensive knowledge and a detailed description of the potential inhomogeneity (caused by imperfections, pores, inclusions, and density variations) present in the materials involved.

Project description:The ability of the analytic anisotropic algorithm (AAA), a superposition- convolution algorithm implemented in the Eclipse (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) treatment planning system (TPS), to accurately account for the presence of inhomogeneities in simple geometries is examined. The goal of 2% accuracy, as set out by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group 65, serves as a useful benchmark against which to evaluate the inhomogeneity correction capabilities of this treatment planning algorithm. A planar geometry phantom consisting of upper and lower layers of Solid Water (Gammex rmi, Middleton, WI) separated by a heterogeneity region of variable thickness, is modeled within the Eclipse TPS. Results obtained with the AAA are compared with experimental measurements. Seven different materials, spanning the range from air to aluminum, constitute the inhomogeneity layer. In general, the AAA overpredicts dose beyond low-density regions and underpredicts dose distal to volumes of high density. In many cases, the deviation between the AAA and experimental results exceeds the Task Group 65 target of 2%. The source of these deviations appears to arise from an inability of the AAA to correctly account for altered attenuation along primary ray paths.

Project description:Synchrony has been used to describe simple beat entrainment as well as correlated mental processes between people, leading some to question whether the term conflates distinct phenomena. Here we ask whether simple synchrony (beat entrainment) predicts more complex attentional synchrony, consistent with a common mechanism. While eye-tracked, participants listened to regularly spaced tones and indicated changes in volume. Across multiple sessions, we found a reliable individual difference: some people entrained their attention more than others, as reflected in beat-matched pupil dilations that predicted performance. In a second study, eye-tracked participants completed the beat task and then listened to a storyteller, who had been previously recorded while eye-tracked. An individual's tendency to entrain to a beat predicted how strongly their pupils synchronized with those of the storyteller, a corollary of shared attention. The tendency to synchronize is a stable individual difference that predicts attentional synchrony across contexts and complexity.

Project description:The interactions between and with nanostructures can only be fully understood when the functional group distribution on their surfaces can be quantified accurately. Here we apply a combination of direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM) imaging and probabilistic modelling to analyse molecular distributions on spherical nanoparticles. The properties of individual fluorophores are assessed and incorporated into a model for the dSTORM imaging process. Using this tailored model, overcounting artefacts are greatly reduced and the locations of dye labels can be accurately estimated, revealing their spatial distribution. We show that standard chemical protocols for dye attachment lead to inhomogeneous functionalization in the case of ubiquitous polystyrene nanoparticles. Moreover, we demonstrate that stochastic fluctuations result in large variability of the local group density between particles. These results cast doubt on the uniform surface coverage commonly assumed in the creation of amorphous functional nanoparticles and expose a striking difference between the average population and individual nanoparticle coverage.

Project description:Performing dance is an intrinsically social art form where at least one person moves while another person watches. Dancing in groups promotes social bonding, but how does group dance affect the people watching? A group of dancers and dance novices watched a 30 min dance video individually in an fMRI scanner. In a follow-up behavioural study, the same people watched the video again and provided continuous enjoyment ratings. Firstly, we computed cross-recurrence of continuous enjoyment ratings and inter-subject correlations (ISCs) in fMRI separately for both groups, and with the choreographer of the dance work. At both behavioural and neural levels, dancers responded more similarly to each other than novices. ISCs among dancers extended beyond brain areas involved in audio-visual integration and sensory areas of human movement perception into motor areas, suggesting greater sensorimotor familiarity with the observed dance movements in the expert group. Secondly, we show that dancers' brain activations and continuous ratings are more similar to the choreographer's ratings in keeping with sharing an aesthetic and artistic perspective when viewing the dance. Thirdly, we show that movement synchrony among performers is the best predictor of brain synchrony among both expert and novice spectators. This is consistent with the idea that changes in emergent movement synchrony are a key aesthetic feature of performing dance. Finally, ISCs across perceptual and motor brain areas were primarily driven by movement acceleration and synchrony, whereas ISCs in orbital and pre-frontal brain areas were overall weaker and better explained by the continuous enjoyment ratings of each group. Our findings provide strong evidence that the aesthetic appreciation of dance involves a common experience between dance spectators and the choreographer. Moreover, the similarity of brain activations and of enjoyment increases with shared knowledge of - and practice in - the artform that is being experienced, in this case contemporary performing dance.

Project description:A variety of social and economic arrangements exist to facilitate the exchange of goods, services, and information over gaps in social structure. Each of these arrangements bears some relationship to the idea of brokerage, but this brokerage is rarely like the pure and formal economic intermediation seen in some modern markets. Indeed, for reasons illuminated by existing sociological and economic models, brokerage is a fragile relationship. In this paper, we review the causes of instability in brokerage and identify three social mechanisms that can stabilize fragile brokerage relationships: social isolation, broker capture, and organizational grafting. Each of these mechanisms rests on the emergence or existence of supporting institutions. We suggest that organizational grafting may be the most stable and effective resolution to the tensions inherent in brokerage, but it is also the most institutionally demanding.

Project description:Phytochromes are widespread red/far-red photosensory proteins well known as critical regulators of photomorphogenesis in plants. It is often assumed that natural selection would have optimized the light sensing efficiency of phytochromes to minimize nonproductive photochemical deexcitation pathways. Surprisingly, the quantum efficiency for the forward Pr-to-Pfr photoconversion of phytochromes seldom exceeds 15%, a value very much lower than that of animal rhodopsins. Exploiting ultrafast excitation wavelength- and temperature-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy, we resolve multiple pathways within the ultrafast photodynamics of the N-terminal PAS-GAF-PHY photosensory core module of cyanobacterial phytochrome Cph1 (termed Cph1Δ) that are primarily responsible for the overall low quantum efficiency. This inhomogeneity primarily reflects a long-lived fluorescent subpopulation that exists in equilibrium with a spectrally distinct, photoactive subpopulation. The fluorescent subpopulation is favored at elevated temperatures, resulting in anomalous excited-state dynamics (slower kinetics at higher temperatures). The spectral and kinetic behavior of the fluorescent subpopulation strongly resembles that of the photochemically compromised and highly fluorescent Y176H variant of Cph1Δ. We present an integrated, heterogeneous model for Cph1Δ that is based on the observed transient and static spectroscopic signals. Understanding the molecular basis for this dynamic inhomogeneity holds potential for rational design of efficient phytochrome-based fluorescent and photoswitchable probes.
