Lack of Association between Toxocara Exposure and Suicide Attempts in Psychiatric Patients.

ABSTRACT: Infection with Toxocara may affect the central nervous system. A high seroprevalence of Toxocara infection has been reported in psychiatric patients. To the best of our knowledge, there is no previous report about an association of Toxocara infection with suicide attempts. Therefore, we sought to determine whether Toxocara exposure is associated with suicide attempts in psychiatric patients. We studied 282 psychiatric outpatients (156 with suicide attempts and 126 without suicide attempts). Sera of patients were analyzed for the presence of anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies by using a commercially available enzyme immunoassay. One of the 156 (0.6%) suicide attempters and 1 (0.8%) of the 126 controls were positive for anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies (OR = 0.80; 95% CI: 0.04-13.02; P = 1.00). Toxocara seropositivity was significantly higher (P = 0.01) in male patients with consumption of raw dried goat meat than male patients without this consumption. Results suggest that Toxocara exposure is not associated with suicide attempts in psychiatric outpatients in Durango City, Mexico. However, further studies with larger samples sizes to confirm our results should be conducted. Too few patients were seropositive to assess further associations of Toxocara exposure with sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics of the psychiatric patients.

Project description:Importance:Gender identity conversion efforts (GICE) have been widely debated as potentially damaging treatment approaches for transgender persons. The association of GICE with mental health outcomes, however, remains largely unknown. Objective:To evaluate associations between recalled exposure to GICE (by a secular or religious professional) and adult mental health outcomes. Design, Setting, and Participants:In this cross-sectional study, a survey was distributed through community-based outreach to transgender adults residing in the United States, with representation from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and US military bases overseas. Data collection occurred during 34 days between August 19 and September 21, 2015. Data analysis was performed from June 8, 2018, to January 2, 2019. Exposure:Recalled exposure to GICE. Main Outcomes and Measures:Severe psychological distress during the previous month, measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (defined as a score ?13). Measures of suicidality during the previous year and lifetime, including ideation, attempts, and attempts requiring inpatient hospitalization. Results:Of 27?715 transgender survey respondents (mean [SD] age, 31.2 [13.5] years), 11?857 (42.8%) were assigned male sex at birth. Among the 19?741 (71.3%) who had ever spoken to a professional about their gender identity, 3869 (19.6%; 95% CI, 18.7%-20.5%) reported exposure to GICE in their lifetime. Recalled lifetime exposure was associated with severe psychological distress during the previous month (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.56; 95% CI, 1.09-2.24; P?<?.001) compared with non-GICE therapy. Associations were found between recalled lifetime exposure and higher odds of lifetime suicide attempts (aOR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.60-3.24; P?<?.001) and recalled exposure before the age of 10 years and increased odds of lifetime suicide attempts (aOR, 4.15; 95% CI, 2.44-7.69; P?<?.001). No significant differences were found when comparing exposure to GICE by secular professionals vs religious advisors. Conclusions and Relevance:The findings suggest that lifetime and childhood exposure to GICE are associated with adverse mental health outcomes in adulthood. These results support policy statements from several professional organizations that have discouraged this practice.

Project description:Suicidal behavior (SB) has a complex etiology of genes, environment or both. One of the genetic components in SB could be copy number variations (CNVs), since CNVs are implicated in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, a recently published genome-wide and case-control study failed to observe a significant role of CNVs in SB (see E-MTAB-3519). Here we complement those initial observations by conducting a brief CNV-association study, for the first time in a family-based trio-sample with severe suicide attempt (SA) outcome in offspring (n=660 trios; the \GISS\ sample, see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23422793 and refs therein). For association testing, we here used the FBAT-CNV methodology (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18228561), which allows for CNV association testing directly on the raw intensity values (Illumina \log R ratio\), evaluating any type of CNVs (e.g. de novo or inherited) without reliance on CNV calling algorithms and robust to control selection biases. Here we have deposited these raw logR-values for 88,450 on-chip CNV-loci of the HumanOmni1-Quad_v1 chip, arranged in a standard pedigree format used as input for FBAT-CNV analysis in SVS software (goldenhelix.com): column 1 is the family ID, column 2 is the Subject type (1 = offspring, 2 = mother, 3 = father), column 3 is the father ID (? for missing), column 4 is the mother ID (? for missing), column 5 is the sex (1 = female, 0 = male), column 6 is the affection status (1 = suicide attempt, 0 = not affected) and columns 7 and onward are the logR-values for each CNV-loci as is listed in the header row. We observed experiment-wide significant association (P ≤ 5.6 x 10-7) of two proximal CNVs at chromosome 14 (Illumina markers cnvi0108946 and cnvi0118308, with NCBI 36.3 start positions 22794779 and 22582820). However, these CNV-associations mapped to T-cell receptor regions, and therefore most likely reflect inter-individual variation in somatic rearrangements occurring in white blood cells (as our source of DNA was blood), rather than association with SA. In conclusion, our results did not suggest any major role of CNVs in SA etiology, in line with the results of the recent case-control study (see E-MTAB-3519).
