Reversible Activation and Transfer of White Phosphorus by Silyl-Stannylene.

Project description:Use of a silyl supported stannylene (Mes TerSn(Sit Bu3 ) [Mes Ter=2,6-(2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 )2 C6 H3 ] enables activation of white phosphorus under mild conditions, which is reversible under UV light. The reaction of a silylene chloride with the activated P4 complex results in facile P-atom transfer. The computational analysis rationalizes the electronic features and high reactivity of the heteroleptic silyl-substituted stannylene in contrast to the previously reported bis(aryl)stannylene.

Photocatalytic stannylation of white phosphorus.

Project description:Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) are highly important chemicals, finding numerous applications in both academia and industry. Herein we describe a simple photocatalytic method for the stannylation of white phosphorus (P4) using a cheap, commercially-available distannane, (Bu3Sn)2, and anthraquinone as a simple photocatalyst. Subsequent 'one pot' transformation of the resulting stannylated monophosphine intermediate (Bu3Sn)3P provides direct, convenient and versatile access to valuable OPCs such as acylated phosphines and tetraalkylphosphonium salts.

Activation of white phosphorus by low-valent group 5 complexes: formation and reactivity of cyclo-P4 inverted sandwich compounds.

Project description:We report the synthesis and comprehensive study of the electronic structure of a unique series of dinuclear group 5 cyclo-tetraphosphide inverted sandwich complexes. White phosphorus (P4) reacts with niobium(III) and tantalum(III) ?-diketiminate (BDI) tert-butylimido complexes to produce the bridging cyclo-P4 phosphide species {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)M]2(?-?(3):?(3)P4)} (1, M = Nb; 2, M = Ta) in fair yields. 1 is alternatively synthesized upon hydrogenolysis of (BDI)Nb(N(t)Bu)Me2 in the presence of P4. The trinuclear side product {[(BDI)NbN(t)Bu]3(?-P12)} (3) is also identified. Protonation of 1 with [HOEt2][B(C6F5)4] does not occur at the phosphide ring but rather involves the BDI ligand to yield {[(BDI(#))Nb(N(t)Bu)]2(?-?(3):?(3)P4)}[B(C6F5)4]2 (4). The monocation and dication analogues {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)Nb]2(?-?(3):?(3)P4)}{B(Ar(F))4}n (5, n = 1; 6, n = 2) are both synthesized by oxidation of 1 with AgBAr(F). DFT calculations were used in combination with EPR and UV-visible spectroscopies to probe the nature of the metal-phosphorus bonding.

Facile storage and release of white phosphorus and yellow arsenic.

Project description:The storage of metastable compounds and modifications of elements are of great interest for synthesis and other, e.g., semiconductor, applications. Whereas white phosphorus is a metastable modification that can be stored under certain conditions, storage of the extremely (light- and air-)sensitive form of arsenic, yellow arsenic, is a challenge rarely tackled so far. Herein, we report on the facile storage and release of these tetrahedral E4 molecules (E = P, As) using activated carbon as a porous storage material. These loaded materials are air- and light-stable and have been comprehensively characterized by solid-state 31P{1H} MAS NMR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction analysis, nitrogen adsorption measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, we show that these materials can be used as a suitable E4 source for releasing intact white phosphorus or yellow arsenic, enabling subsequent reactions in solution. Because the uptake and release of E4 are reversible, these materials are excellent carriers of these highly reactive modifications.

The genome evolution and low-phosphorus adaptation in white lupin.

Project description:White lupin (Lupinus albus) is a legume crop that develops cluster roots and has high phosphorus (P)-use efficiency (PUE) in low-P soils. Here, we assemble the genome of white lupin and find that it has evolved from a whole-genome triplication (WGT) event. We then decipher its diploid ancestral genome and reconstruct the three sub-genomes. Based on the results, we further reveal the sub-genome dominance and the genic expression of the different sub-genomes varying in relation to their transposable element (TE) density. The PUE genes in white lupin have been expanded through WGT as well as tandem and dispersed duplications. Furthermore, we characterize four main pathways for high PUE, which include carbon fixation, cluster root formation, soil-P remobilization, and cellular-P reuse. Among these, auxin modulation may be important for cluster root formation through involvement of potential genes LaABCG36s and LaABCG37s. These findings provide insights into the genome evolution and low-P adaptation of white lupin.

White matter alterations in individuals experiencing attenuated positive psychotic symptoms.

Project description:AimDiffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies suggest that reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) in the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) and superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) occurs among schizophrenia patients and those at risk for psychosis. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of knowledge investigating white matter fibre pathways in non-help-seeking individuals who endorse attenuated positive psychotic symptoms (APPS) across a range of mental disorders. The aim of the current study was to determine if alterations in ILF and SLF microstructures were specific to distressing APPS related to risk for psychosis or to APPS symptoms occurring in multiple mental disorders, which would suggest a shared phenotype among disorders.MethodTwenty-six non-help-seeking young adults were administered the Prodromal Questionnaire. DTI was conducted on participants (n = 13) who endorsed eight or more distressing APPS (D-APPS, a potentially clinically relevant group) and those who endorsed three or fewer distressing APPS (low-APPS; n = 13). Semistructured interviews were administered to determine diagnoses, as well as clinical risk for psychosis status.ResultsResults indicated that the D-APPS group exhibited decreased FA in the left ILF compared with the low-APPS group, even after removing four D-APPS participants who were considered at risk for psychosis.ConclusionFindings suggest that white matter microstructure is altered in individuals experiencing APPS across a range of disorders, independent of clinical high risk for psychosis status. Reduced FA in the left ILF may not be specific to psychosis risk, but rather for APPS that occur in a number of mental disorders.

Metabolic Adaptations of White Lupin Roots and Shoots under Phosphorus Deficiency.

Project description:White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is highly adapted to phosphorus-diminished soils. P-deficient white lupin plants modify their root architecture and physiology to acquire sparingly available soil phosphorus. We employed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for metabolic profiling of P-deficient white lupins, to investigate biochemical pathways involved in the P-acquiring strategy. After 14 days of P-deficiency, plants showed reduced levels of fructose, glucose, and sucrose in shoots. Phosphorylated metabolites such as glucose-6-phosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, myo-inositol-phosphate and glycerol-3-phosphate were reduced in both shoots and roots. After 22 days of P-deficiency, no effect on shoot or root sugar metabolite levels was found, but the levels of phosphorylated metabolites were further reduced. Organic acids, amino acids and several shikimate pathway products showed enhanced levels in 22-day-old P-deficient roots and shoots. These results indicate that P-deficient white lupins adapt their carbohydrate partitioning between shoot and root in order to supply their growing root system as an early response to P-deficiency. Organic acids are released into the rhizosphere to mobilize phosphorus from soil particles. A longer period of P-deficiency leads to scavenging of Pi from P-containing metabolites and reduced protein anabolism, but enhanced formation of secondary metabolites. The latter can serve as stress protection molecules or actively acquire phosphorus from the soil.

Direct catalytic transformation of white phosphorus into arylphosphines and phosphonium salts.

Project description:Phosphorus compounds are ubiquitous in the chemical sciences, finding applications throughout industry and academia. Of particular interest to synthetic chemists are organophosphorus compounds, which contain P-C bonds. However, state-of-the-art processes for the synthesis of these important materials rely on an inefficient, stepwise methodology involving initial oxidation of white phosphorus (P4) with hazardous chlorine gas and the subsequent displacement of chloride ions. Catalytic P4 organofunctionalisation reactions have remained elusive, as they require multiple P-P bond breaking and P-C bond formation events to break down the P4 core, all of which must occur in a controlled manner. Herein, we describe an efficient transition metal-catalyzed process capable of forming P-C bonds from P4. Using blue light photocatalysis, this method directly affords valuable triarylphosphines and tetraarylphosphonium salts in a single reaction step.

Unexpected White Phosphorus (P<sub>4</sub> ) Activation Modes with Silylene-Substituted o-Carboranes and Access to an Isolable 1,3-Diphospha-2,4-disilabutadiene.

Project description:New types of metal-free white phosphorus (P4 ) activation are reported. While the phosphine-silylene-substituted dicarborane 1, CB-SiP (CB=ortho-C,C'-C2 B10 H10 , Si=PhC(tBuN)2 Si, P=P[N(tBu)CH2 ]2 ), activates white phosphorus in a 2 : 1 molar ratio to yield the P5 -chain containing species 2, the analogous bis(silylene)-substituted compound 3, CB-Si2 , reacts with P4 in the molar ratio of 2 : 1 to furnish the first isolable 1,3-diphospha-2,4-disilabutadiene (Si=P-Si=P-containing) compound 4. For the latter reaction, two intermediates having a CB-Si2 P4 and CB-Si2 P2 core could be observed by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The compounds 2 and 4 were characterized including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Their electronic structures and mechanisms were investigated by density functional theory calculations.

Organomagnesium Based Flash Chemistry: Continuous Flow Generation and Utilization of Halomethylmagnesium Intermediates.

Project description:The generation of highly unstable chloromethylmagnesium chloride in a continuous flow reactor and its reaction with aldehydes and ketones is reported. With this strategy, chlorohydrins and epoxides were synthesized within a total residence time of only 2.6 s. The outcome of the reaction can be tuned by simply using either a basic or an acidic quench. Very good to excellent isolated yields, up to 97%, have been obtained for most cases (30 examples).
