Cosmochemical fractionation by collisional erosion during the Earth's accretion.

ABSTRACT: Early in the Solar System's history, energetic collisions of differentiated bodies affected the final composition of the terrestrial planets through partial destruction. Enstatite chondrites (EC) are the best candidates to represent the primordial terrestrial precursors as they present the most similar isotopic compositions to Earth. Here we report that collisional erosion of >15% of the early Earth's mass can reconcile the remaining compositional differences between EC and the Earth. We base our demonstration on experimental melting of an EC composition at pressures between 1 bar and 25 GPa. At low pressures, the first silicate melts are highly enriched in incompatible elements Si, Al and Na, and depleted in Mg. Loss of proto-crusts through impacts raises the Earth's Mg/Si ratio to its present value. To match all major element compositions, our model implies preferential loss of volatile lithophile elements and re-condensation of refractory lithophile elements after the impacts.

Project description:Silicon and Mg in differentiated rocky bodies exhibit heavy isotope enrichments that have been attributed to evaporation of partially or entirely molten planetesimals. We evaluate the mechanisms of planetesimal evaporation in the early solar system and the conditions that controled attendant isotope fractionations. Energy balance at the surface of a body accreted within ~1 Myr of CAI formation and heated from within by 26Al decay results in internal temperatures exceeding the silicate solidus, producing a transient magma ocean with a thin surface boundary layer of order < 1 meter that would be subject to foundering. Bodies that are massive enough to form magma oceans by radioisotope decay (≥ 0.1% M ⊕) can retain hot rock vapor even in the absence of ambient nebular gas. We find that a steady-state rock vapor forms within minutes to hours and results from a balance between rates of magma evaporation and atmospheric escape. Vapor pressure buildup adjacent to the surfaces of the evaporating magmas would have inevitably led to an approach to equilibrium isotope partitioning between the vapor phase and the silicate melt. Numerical simulations of this near-equilibrium evaporation process for a body with a radius of ~ 700 km yield a steady-state far-field vapor pressure of 10-8 bar and a vapor pressure at the surface of 10-4 bar, corresponding to 95% saturation. Approaches to equilibrium isotope fractionation between vapor and melt should have been the norm during planet formation due to the formation of steady-state rock vapor atmospheres and/or the presence of protostellar gas. We model the Si and Mg isotopic composition of bulk Earth as a consequence of accretion of planetesimals that evaporated subject to the conditions described above. The results show that the best fit to bulk Earth is for a carbonaceous chondrite-like source material with about 12% loss of Mg and 15% loss of Si resulting from near-equilibrium evaporation into the solar protostellar disk of H2 on timescales of 104 to 105 years.

Project description:Hydrogen exchange in solution combined with ion fragmentation in the gas phase followed by MS detection emerged in recent years as a powerful tool to study higher order protein structure and dynamics. However, a certain type of ion chemistry in the gas phase, namely, internal rearrangement of labile hydrogen atoms (the so-called hydrogen scrambling), is often cited as a factor limiting the utility of this experimental technique. Although several studies have been carried out to elucidate the roles played by various factors in the occurrence and the extent of hydrogen scrambling, there is still no consensus as to what experimental protocol should be followed to avoid or minimize it. In this study we employ fragmentation of mass-selected subpopulations of protein ions to assess the extent of internal proton mobility prior to dissociation. A unique advantage of tandem MS is that it not only provides a means to map the deuterium content of protein ions whose overall levels of isotope incorporation can be precisely defined by controlling the mass selection window, but also correlates this spatial isotope distribution with such global characteristic as the protein ion charge state. Hydrogen scrambling does not occur when the charge state of the precursor protein ions selected for fragmentation is high. Fragment ions derived from both N- and C-terminal parts of the protein are equally unaffected by scrambling. However, spatial distribution of deuterium atoms obtained by fragmenting low-charge-density protein ions is consistent with a very high degree of scrambling prior to the dissociation events. The extent of hydrogen scrambling is also high when multistage fragmentation is used to probe deuterium incorporation locally. Taken together, the experimental results provide a coherent picture of intramolecular processes occurring prior to the dissociation event and provide guidance for the design of experiments whose outcome is unaffected by hydrogen scrambling.
