ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND:Of the two known Eupareophora species, more is known about the larva and bionomics of the Nearctic E. parca, than the rarely recorded West Palaearctic E. exarmata. NEW INFORMATION:The last instar larva and prepupa of E. exarmata is illustrated and briefly described. In Germany its host is Fraxinus excelsior.

Project description:Keys to adults and larvae of the genera of West Palaearctic nematine sawflies are presented. Species of some of the smaller genera are keyed, and their taxonomy, distribution, and host plants reviewed, with a geographic focus on north-western Europe, particularly Sweden. Dinematus Lacourt, 2006 is a new junior subjective synonym of Pristiphora Latreille, 1810, resulting in the new combination Pristiphora krausi (Lacourt, 2006) for the type species of Dinematus. Hemichroa monticola Ermolenko, 1960 is a new junior subjective synonym of Hemichroa australis (Serville, 1823). Lectotypes are designated for Tenthredo opaca Fabricius, 1775, Mesoneura opaca var. nigerrima Enslin, 1914, Mesoneura opaca var. obscuriventris Enslin, 1914, Nematus hypogastricus Hartig, 1837, Nematus alnivorus Hartig, 1840, Leptopus rufipes Förster, 1854, Nematus protensus Förster, 1854, and Platycampus luridiventris var. pleuritica Enslin, 1915. A phylogenetic analysis based on four genes (mitochondrial COI and nuclear NaK, POL2, and TPI) supports the current generic classification.

Review of the sawfly genus Empria (Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae) in Japan.

Project description:The following eleven Empria species are reported from Japan: Empria candidata (Fallén, 1808), Empria japonica Heidemaa & Prous, 2011, Empria liturata (Gmelin, 1790), Empria loktini Ermolenko, 1971, Empria plana (Jakowlew, 1891), Empria quadrimaculata Takeuchi, 1952, Empria rubicola Ermolenko, 1971, Empria tridens (Konow, 1896), Empria tridentis Lee & Ryu, 1996, Empria honshuana Prous & Heidemaa, sp. n., and Empria takeuchii Prous & Heidemaa, sp. n. The lectotypes of Poecilosoma pallipes Matsumura, 1912, Empria itelmena Malaise, 1931, Tenthredo candidata Fallén, 1808, and Tenthredo (Poecilostoma) hybrida Erichson, 1851 are designated. Empria itelmena Malaise, 1931, syn. n. is synonymized with Empria plana (Jakowlew, 1891). Poecilosoma pallipes Matsumura, 1912, previously assigned to Empria, is transferred to Monsoma, creating Monsoma pallipes (Matsumura, 1912), comb. n. Results of phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (ITS1 and ITS2) sequences are also provided.

The complete mitochondrial genome of <i>Athalia proxima</i> (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:The nearly complete mitochondrial genome of Athalia proxima is 15852 bp in size, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and a partial control region. Compared to ancestral organization, seven tRNA genes were rearranged. Bayesian and maximum-likelihood trees recovered the monophyly of Tenthredinidae and A. proxima was the basal lineage. The mitogenome sequence provided fundamental data for resolving phylogenetic and genetic problems of Tenthredinidae.

Mitochondrial Phylogenomics of Tenthredinidae (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinoidea) Supports the Monophyly of Megabelesesinae as a Subfamily.

Project description:Tenthredinidae represents one of the external feeders of the most diverse superfamily, Tenthredinoidea, with diverse host plant utilization. In this study, four complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes), those of Cladiucha punctata, Cladiucha magnoliae, Megabeleses magnoliae, and Megabeleses liriodendrovorax, are newly sequenced and comparatively analyzed with previously reported tenthredinid mitogenomes. The close investigation of mitogenomes and the phylogeny of Tenthredinidae leads us to the following conclusions: The subfamilial relationships and phylogenetic placements within Tenthredinidae are mostly found to be similar to the previously suggested phylogenies. However, the present phylogeny supports the monophyly of Megabelesesinae as a subfamily, with the sister-group placement of Cladiucha and Megabeleses outside of Allantinae. The occurrence of the same type of tRNA rearrangements (MQI and ANS1ERF) in the mitogenomes of Megabelesesinae species and the presence of apomorphic morphological characters also provide robust evidence for this new subfamily. The divergence and diversification times of the subfamilies appear to be directly related to colonization of the flowering plants following the Early Cretaceous. The origin time and diversification patterns of Megabelesesinae were also well matched with the divergence times of their host plants from Magnoliaceae.

Geographical distribution of the giant honey bee <i>Apis laboriosa</i> Smith, 1871 (Hymenoptera, Apidae).

Project description:Worldwide pollinator declines have dramatically increased our need to survey and monitor pollinator distributions and abundances. The giant honey bee, Apis laboriosa, is one of the important pollinators at higher altitudes of the Himalayas. This species has a restricted distribution along the Himalayas and neighbouring mountain ranges of Asia. Previous assessments of its distribution, published more than 20 years ago, were based on museum specimens. Since then, 244 additional localities have been revealed through field trips by the authors, publications, and websites. We present a revised distribution for A. laboriosa that better defines its range and extends it eastward to the mountains of northern Vietnam, southward along the Arakan Mountains to west-central Myanmar, into the Shillong Hills of Meghalaya, India, and northwestward in Uttarakhand, India. This species is generally found at elevations between 1000-3000 m a.s.l.. In northeastern India A. laboriosa colonies occur during summer at sites as low as 850 m a.s.l. and some lower elevation colonies maintain their nests throughout the winter. Finally, we report three regions in Arunachal Pradesh, India, and nine locations in northern Vietnam, where we observed workers of A. laboriosa and A. dorsata foraging sympatrically; their co-occurrence supports the species status of Apis laboriosa.

Characterization of the mitochondrial genome of <i>Analcellicampa xanthosoma</i> gen. et sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae).

Project description:A new genus with a new species of the tribe Hoplocampini of Hoplocampinae was described from China: Analcellicampa xanthosoma Wei & Niu, gen. et sp. nov. Hoplocampa danfengensis G. Xiao 1994 was designated as the type species of the new genus. The characters of Analcellicampa danfengensis (G. Xiao) comb. nov. were briefly discussed. A key to the tribes and known genera of Hoplocampinae was provided. The nearly complete mitochondrial genome of A. xanthosoma was characterized as having a length of 15,512 bp and containing 37 genes (22 tRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and 2 rRNAs). The gene order of this new specimen was the same as that in the inferred insect ancestral mitochondrial genome. All PCGs were initiated by ATN codons and ended with TAA or T stop codons. All tRNAs had a typical cloverleaf secondary structure, except for trnS1. Remarkably, the helices H991 of rrnS and H47 of rrnL were redundant, while helix H563 of rrnL was highly conserved. A phylogeny based on previously reported symphytan mitochondrial genomes showed that A. xanthosoma is a sister group to Monocellicampa pruni, with high support values. We suggest that A. xanthosoma and M. pruni belong to the tribe Hoplocampini of Hoplocampinae.

Project description:The mitochondrial genome of Hemathlophorus brevigenatus Wei, 2005 collected from Huanggang Mountain of China is described using the NGS approach. The length of the sequence is 15,452 bp containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and one control region. The overall A + T content is 79.5%. tRNA rearrangements occur in the MQI cluster. Phylogenetic analysis of H. brevigenatus resolved it in a clade with Allantus togatus in Allantinae which provides new evidence for the phylogeny of Tenthredinidae.

Project description:We assembled the near-complete mitochondrial genome of Colochela zhongi Wei, 2016 with next-generation sequencing (NGS). The total genome size of C. zhongi was 15,095 bp with 80.6% A + T content, containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. Three tRNA genes rearrangements were found compared to the ancestral organization. Phylogenetic analysis results based on heterogeneity models of 46 Symphytan and two Apocritan strongly supported that C. zhongi was closely related to Siobla xizangensis.
