ABSTRACT: Electrical tuning of selective reflection of light is achieved in a very broad spectral range from ultraviolet to visible and infrared by an oblique helicoidal state of a cholesteric liquid crystal in a wide temperature range (including room temperature). The phenomenon offers potential applications in tunable smart windows, lasers, optical filters and limiters, as well as in displays.

Ultraviolet light screen using cholesteric liquid crystal capsules on the basis of selective reflection.

Project description:Sunscreen can protect human skin from sunlight by decreasing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, specifically UV-B and UV-A. In this study, a new type of UV screen system is proposed using cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) capable of selectively reflecting UV-A within the human skin temperature range of 32-36 °C. Polycaprolactone (PCL) capsules with CLC mixture which had a helical chiral pitch corresponding to the wavelength of UV light were made by a solvent evaporation method. The average diameter of the capsules was about 34 μm. Consequently, it was confirmed that the CLC mixture (COC : CN = 80 : 20) could reflect UV-A light over 350-380 nm within the human skin temperature range. Also, it was confirmed that the CLC/PCL microcapsules could block UV light over 290-400 nm by about 6%.

Intense ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum laser.

Project description:A high-brightness ultrabroadband supercontinuum white laser is desirable for various fields of modern science. Here, we present an intense ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum femtosecond laser source (with 300-5000 nm 25 dB bandwidth) with 0.54 mJ per pulse. The laser is obtained by sending a 3.9 μm, 3.3 mJ mid-infrared pump pulse into a cascaded architecture of gas-filled hollow-core fiber, a bare lithium niobate crystal plate, and a specially designed chirped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, under the synergic action of second and third order nonlinearities such as high harmonic generation and self-phase modulation. This full-spectrum femtosecond laser source can provide a revolutionary tool for optical spectroscopy and find potential applications in physics, chemistry, biology, material science, industrial processing, and environment monitoring.

Efficient visible light modulation based on electrically tunable all dielectric metasurfaces embedded in thin-layer nematic liquid crystals.

Project description:All-dielectric metasurfaces have attracted attention for highly efficient visible light manipulation. So far, however, they are mostly passive devices, while those allowing dynamic control remain a challenge. A highly efficient tuning mechanism is immersing the metasurface in a birefringent liquid crystal (LC), whose refractive index can be electrically controlled. Here, an all-dielectric tunable metasurface is demonstrated based on this concept, operating at visible frequencies and based on TiO2 nanodisks embedded in a thin LC layer. Small driving voltages from 3~5 V are sufficient to tune the metasurface resonances, with an associated transmission modulation of more than 65%. The metasurface optical responses, including the observed electric and magnetic dipole resonance shifts as well as the interfacial anchoring effect of the LC induced by the presence of the nanostructures, are systematically discussed. The dynamic tuning observed in the transmission spectra can pave the way to dynamically tunable metasurface devices for efficient visible light modulation applications.

Electrically tunable two-dimensional heterojunctions for miniaturized near-infrared spectrometers.

Project description:Miniaturized spectrometers are of considerable interest for their portability. Most designs to date employ a photodetector array with distinct spectral responses or require elaborated integration of micro & nano optic modules, typically with a centimeter-scale footprint. Here, we report a design of a micron-sized near-infrared ultra-miniaturized spectrometer based on two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure (2D-vdWH). By introducing heavy metal atoms with delocalized electronic orbitals between 2D-vdWHs, we greatly enhance the interlayer coupling and realize electrically tunable infrared photoresponse (1.15 to 1.47 μm). Combining the gate-tunable photoresponse and regression algorithm, we achieve spectral reconstruction and spectral imaging in a device with an active footprint < 10 μm. Considering the ultra-small footprint and simple fabrication process, the 2D-vdWHs with designable bandgap energy and enhanced photoresponse offer an attractive solution for on-chip infrared spectroscopy.

Hyperspectral infrared microscopy with visible light.

Project description:Hyperspectral microscopy is an imaging technique that provides spectroscopic information with high spatial resolution. When applied in the relevant wavelength region, such as in the infrared (IR), it can reveal a rich spectral fingerprint across different regions of a sample. Challenges associated with low efficiency and high cost of IR light sources and detector arrays have limited its broad adoption. Here, we introduce a new approach to IR hyperspectral microscopy, where the IR spectral map is obtained with off-the-shelf components built for visible light. The method is based on the nonlinear interference of correlated photons generated via parametric down-conversion. In this proof-of-concept we demonstrate the chemical mapping of a patterned sample, where different areas have distinctive IR spectroscopic fingerprints. The method provides a wide field of view, fast readout, and negligible heat delivered to the sample, which opens prospects for its further development for applications in material and biological studies.

Efficient gate-tunable light-emitting device made of defective boron nitride nanotubes: from ultraviolet to the visible.

Project description:Boron nitride is a promising material for nanotechnology applications due to its two-dimensional graphene-like, insulating, and highly-resistant structure. Recently it has received a lot of attention as a substrate to grow and isolate graphene as well as for its intrinsic UV lasing response. Similar to carbon, one-dimensional boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have been theoretically predicted and later synthesised. Here we use first principles simulations to unambiguously demonstrate that i) BN nanotubes inherit the highly efficient UV luminescence of hexagonal BN; ii) the application of an external perpendicular field closes the electronic gap keeping the UV lasing with lower yield; iii) defects in BNNTS are responsible for tunable light emission from the UV to the visible controlled by a transverse electric field (TEF). Our present findings pave the road towards optoelectronic applications of BN-nanotube-based devices that are simple to implement because they do not require any special doping or complex growth.

Electrically tunable perfect light absorbers as color filters and modulators.

Project description:Methods for spectrally controlling light absorption in optoelectronic devices have attracted considerable attention in recent years. It is now well known that a Fabry-Perot nanocavity comprising thin semiconductor and metal films can be used to absorb light at selected wavelengths. The absorption wavelength is controlled by tailoring the thickness of the nanocavity and also by nanostructure patterning. However, the realization of dynamically tuning the absorption wavelength without changing the structural geometry remains a great challenge in optoelectronic device development. Here it is shown how an ultrathin n-type doped indium antimonide integrated into a subwavelength-thick optical nanocavity can result in an electrically tunable perfect light absorber in the visible and near infrared range. These absorbers require simple thin-film fabrication processes and are cost effective for large-area devices without resorting to sophisticated nanopatterning techniques. In the visible range, a 40?nm spectral shift can be attained by applying a reasonable bias voltage to effect the color change. It is also shown that these electrically tunable absorbers may be used as optical modulators in the infrared. The predicted (up to) 95.3% change in reflectance, transforming the device from perfectly absorbing to highly reflective, should make this technology attractive to the telecommunication (switching) industry.

Electrically Tunable Bifocal Metalens with Diffraction-Limited Focusing and Imaging at Visible Wavelengths.

Project description:Tunable optical devices powered by metasurfaces provide a new path for functional planar optics. In particular, lenses with tunable focal lengths can play a key role in various fields with applications in imaging, displays, and augmented and virtual reality devices. Here, the authors demonstrate an electrically controllable bifocal metalens at visible wavelengths by incorporating a metasurface designed to focus light at two different focal lengths, with liquid crystals to actively manipulate the focal length of the metalens through the application of an external bias. By utilizing hydrogenated amorphous silicon that is optimized to provide an extremely low extinction coefficient in the visible regime, the metalens is highly efficient with measured focusing efficiencies of around 44%. They numerically design and experimentally realize and characterize tunable focusing and demonstrate electrically tunable active imaging at visible wavelengths using the bifocal metalens combined with liquid crystals. Diffraction limited focusing and imaging is verified through the analysis of the measured optical intensities at the focal points and the modulation transfer function. The bifocal metalens is used to demonstrate electrically modulated focus switching between the two designed focal planes, to display images of positive and negative target objects.

Toward Electrically Tunable, Lithography-Free, Ultra-Thin Color Filters Covering the Whole Visible Spectrum.

Project description:The possibility of real-time tuning of optical devices has attracted a lot of interest over the last decade. At the same time, coming up with simple lithography-free structures has always been a challenge in the design of large-area compatible devices. In this work, we present the concept and the sample design of an electrically tunable, lithography-free, ultra-thin transmission-mode color filter, the spectrum of which continuously covers the whole visible region. A simple Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) cavity configuration is used. It is shown that using the electro-optic dielectric material of 4-dimethyl-amino-N-methyl-4-stilbazoliumtosylate (DAST) as the dielectric layer in this configuration enables efficient electrical tuning of the color filter. The total thickness of the structure is 120 nm, so it is ultra-thin. The output color gets tuned from violet to red by sweeping the applied voltage from -12 to +12 Volts (V). We present an in-detail optimization procedure along with a simple calculation method for the resonance wavelength of the MIM cavity that is based on circuit theory. Such power-efficient structures have a large variety of potential applications ranging from optical communication and switching to displays and color-tunable windows.

Topological engineering of terahertz light using electrically tunable exceptional point singularities.

Project description:The topological structure associated with the branch point singularity around an exceptional point (EP) can provide tools for controlling the propagation of light. Through use of graphene-based devices, we demonstrate the emergence of EPs in an electrically controlled interaction between light and a collection of organic molecules in the terahertz regime at room temperature. We show that the intensity and phase of terahertz pulses can be controlled by a gate voltage, which drives the device across the EP. Our electrically tunable system allows reconstruction of the Riemann surface associated with the complex energy landscape and provides topological control of light by tuning the loss imbalance and frequency detuning of interacting modes. Our approach provides a platform for developing topological optoelectronics and studying the manifestations of EP physics in light-matter interactions.
