Lynx: a knowledge base and an analytical workbench for integrative medicine.

ABSTRACT: Lynx (http://lynx.ci.uchicago.edu) is a web-based database and a knowledge extraction engine. It supports annotation and analysis of high-throughput experimental data and generation of weighted hypotheses regarding genes and molecular mechanisms contributing to human phenotypes or conditions of interest. Since the last release, the Lynx knowledge base (LynxKB) has been periodically updated with the latest versions of the existing databases and supplemented with additional information from public databases. These additions have enriched the data annotations provided by Lynx and improved the performance of Lynx analytical tools. Moreover, the Lynx analytical workbench has been supplemented with new tools for reconstruction of co-expression networks and feature-and-network-based prioritization of genetic factors and molecular mechanisms. These developments facilitate the extraction of meaningful knowledge from experimental data and LynxKB. The Service Oriented Architecture provides public access to LynxKB and its analytical tools via user-friendly web services and interfaces.

Project description:IntroductionThe International Classification of Primary Care, Second version (ICPC-2) aligned with the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) is a standard for primary care epidemiology compendium. ICPC-2 has been also intended to identify the clinical topics in family medicine. Contextual field-specific knowledge in family medicine and primary care such as health structures, management, categories of patients, research methods, ethical or environmental features are not standardized and reflect, more often, the views of experts.MethodsA qualitative research method, applied to the analysis of several Family Medicine congresses, has helped identify, in addition to clinical items, a spectrum of contextual concepts addressed by family doctors during their exchanges at the congresses. Assembled in a hierarchical manner, these concepts were given expression, together with ICPC-2, under the name of Q-codes Version 2.5, in the multilingual multi-terminology semantic server of the Department of Information and medical informatics (D2Im) at the University of Rouen, France. The two classifications are edited under the acronym 3 CGP for Core Content classification of General Practice. This free access server allows you to consult the ICPC-2 in 22 languages and the Q-codes in ten languages.ResultsThe result of the joint use of these two classifications, as descriptors in congress to identify the concepts in texts or index the gray literature for family medicine and primary care is presented here in its various pilot uses. The validity and generalizability of 3CGP appears to be good in the light of the translations already carried out by colleagues around the world and of the applicability of the method in the two sides of the Atlantic. However the reproducibility and the inter-coder variations still remain to be tested for Q-codes. Maintenance remains an issue.ConclusionThis method highlights the conceptual extension, the complexity and the dynamics of the role of general practitioner and family doctor as well as of primary care physician.

Project description:BackgroundThe prevalence of CAM use is increasing. This integrative review investigated New Zealand healthcare professionals' practice of, attitudes toward, and knowledge about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).MethodsLiterature search was conducted in four databases from inception to April 2020. Studies were included if they reported results from primary data collection on practice of, attitudes toward, or knowledge about CAM amongst New Zealand healthcare professionals.ResultsEleven studies (two of 'high-quality', seven of 'moderate-quality', and two of 'low-quality') were identified with 2060 healthcare professionals including general practitioners (GPs), nurses, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and medical specialists. New Zealand healthcare professionals were generally positive regarding CAM use, but have concerns on the scientific evidence, regulation, safety, financial costs of CAM, and encourage an evidence-based CAM practice and stronger CAM regulation. Findings indicated that around 25% of GPs practise CAM, and 82.3% refer patients to CAM practitioners. When treating pregnant women, 48.4% of physiotherapists practise acupuncture, and 37.3% of midwives recommend CAM. GPs believe that acupuncture is the most helpful CAM modality, and most commonly practiced and referred patients to acupuncture. Up to 58% of GPs and Plunket nurses wanted to receive further education on CAM, and up to 66.7% GPs favour the idea CAM should be included in medical curriculums.ConclusionsNine of the 11 included studies were of moderate to high quality, thus enhancing the reliability of the review findings. In order to better manage CAM in New Zealand New Zealand clinical settings, there is a need to invest in CAM research and education, and enhance CAM regulation. This review is a first step in developing an evidence base to offer insights for further development of effective CAM policies regarding safety, efficacy, regulation and integration in New Zealand.
