Comparison of carbon balances between continuous-cover and clear-cut forestry in Sweden.

ABSTRACT: Continuous-cover forestry (CCF) has been recognized for the production of multiple ecosystem services, and is seen as an alternative to clear-cut forestry (CF). Despite the increasing interest, it is still not well described how CCF would affect the carbon balance and the resulting climate benefit from the forest in relation to CF. This study compares carbon balances of CF and CCF, applied as two alternative land-use strategies for a heterogeneous Norway spruce (Picea abies) stand. We use a set of models to analyze the long-term effects of different forest management and wood use strategies in Sweden on carbon dioxide emissions and carbon stock changes. The results show that biomass growth and yield is more important than the choice of silvicultural system per se. When comparing CF and CCF assuming similar growth, extraction and product use, only minor differences in long-term climate benefit were found between the two principally different silvicultural systems.

Potential of continuous cover forestry on drained peatlands to increase the carbon sink in Finland.

Project description:Land-based mitigation measures are needed to achieve climate targets. One option is the mitigation of currently high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of nutrient-rich drained peatland forest soils. Continuous cover forestry (CCF) has been proposed as a measure to manage this GHG emission source; however, its emission reduction potential and impact on timber production at regional and national scales have not been quantified. To quantify the potential emission reduction, we simulated four management scenarios for Finnish forests: (i) The replacement of clear-cutting by selection harvesting on nutrient-rich drained peatlands (CCF) and (ii) the current forest management regime (BAU), and both at two harvest levels, namely (i) the mean annual harvesting (2016-2018) and (ii) the maximum sustainable yield. The simulations were conducted at the stand scale with a forest simulator (MELA) coupled with a hydrological model (SpaFHy), soil C model (Yasso07) and empirical GHG exchange models. Simulations showed that the management scenario that avoided clear-cutting on nutrient-rich drained peatlands (i.e. CCF) produced approximately 1 Tg CO2 eq. higher carbon sinks annually compared with BAU at equal harvest level for Finland. This emission reduction can be attributed to the maintenance of a higher biomass sink and to the mitigation of soil emissions from nutrient-rich drained peatland sites.

Retention as an integrated biodiversity conservation approach for continuous-cover forestry in Europe.

Project description:Retention forestry implies that biological legacies like dead and living trees are deliberately selected and retained beyond harvesting cycles to benefit biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. This model has been applied for several decades in even-aged, clearcutting (CC) systems but less so in uneven-aged, continuous-cover forestry (CCF). We provide an overview of retention in CCF in temperate regions of Europe, currently largely focused on habitat trees and dead wood. The relevance of current meta-analyses and many other studies on retention in CC is limited since they emphasize larger patches in open surroundings. Therefore, we reflect here on the ecological foundations and socio-economic frameworks of retention approaches in CCF, and highlight several areas with development potential for the future. Conclusions from this perspective paper, based on both research and current practice on several continents, although highlighting Europe, are also relevant to other temperate regions of the world using continuous-cover forest management approaches.

Large difference in carbon emission – burial balances between boreal and arctic lakes.

Project description:Lakes play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle by burying C in sediments and emitting CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere. The strengths and control of these fundamentally different pathways are therefore of interest when assessing the continental C balance and its response to environmental change. In this study, based on new high-resolution estimates in combination with literature data, we show that annual emission:burial ratios are generally ten times higher in boreal compared to subarctic - arctic lakes. These results suggest major differences in lake C cycling between biomes, as lakes in warmer boreal regions emit more and store relatively less C than lakes in colder arctic regions. Such effects are of major importance for understanding climatic feedbacks on the continental C sink - source function at high latitudes. If predictions of global warming and northward expansion of the boreal biome are correct, it is likely that increasing C emissions from high latitude lakes will partly counteract the presumed increasing terrestrial C sink capacity at high latitudes.

A Comparison between Indoor and Outdoor Rape Suspects in Sweden.

Project description:As the number of rapes is increasing in Sweden, and the number of individuals convicted of these crimes is decreasing, it is of importance to study offender characteristics of those committing these crimes and the circumstances in which these crimes are conducted, such as indoors or outdoors. Data from Swedish population-based registers were used to identify individuals suspected of rape, aggravated rape, attempted rape or attempted aggravated rape (in short: rape+) against females ≥18 years old between 2007-2017. Latent Class Analysis was then used to identify classes of rape+ suspects with respect to the location of the rape+ and then compare the two groups. A total of 19,723 individuals were included of which the majority (n = 17,520; 88.8%) were suspected of indoor rape+. In both groups, we identified a low offenders' class and a high offenders' class. In addition, first-generation immigrants had a higher odds of being suspected of outdoor rape+ than Swedish-born suspects, and a previous conviction of violent crime was a risk factor for committing outdoor rape+.

Sustained yield forestry in Sweden and Russia: how does it correspond to sustainable forest management policy?

Project description:This paper analyzes how sustained yield (SY) forestry is defined and implemented in Sweden and Russia, two countries with different forest-industrial regimes. We first compare definitions of SY forestry in national legislation and policies. Then we study forest management planning in two large forest management units with respect to: delivered forest products and values, how the harvest level of timber is defined, where the harvest takes place, and what treatments are used to sustain desired forest products and values. In Sweden SY forestry is maximum yield based on high-input forest management, and in Russia it is forestry based on natural regeneration with minimum investments in silviculture. We conclude that how SY forestry contributes to SFM depends on the context. Finally, we discuss the consequences of SY forestry as performed in Sweden and Russia related to its ability to support diverse forest functions, as envisioned in sustainable forest management policy.

Skirting the pitfalls: a clear-cut nomenclature for H3K4 methyltransferases.

Project description:To unravel the system of epigenetic control of transcriptional regulation is a fascinating and important scientific pursuit. Surprisingly, recent successes in gene identification using high-throughput sequencing strategies showed that, despite their ubiquitous role in transcriptional control, dysfunction of chromatin-modifying enzymes can cause very specific human developmental phenotypes. An intriguing example is the identification of de novo dominant mutations in MLL2 as a cause of Kabuki syndrome, a well-known congenital syndrome that is associated with a very recognizable facial gestalt. However, the existing confusion in the nomenclature of the human and mouse MLL gene family impedes correct interpretation of scientific findings for these genes and their encoded proteins. This Review aims to point out this nomenclature pitfall, to explain its historical background, and to promote an unequivocal nomenclature system for chromatin-modifying enzymes as proposed by Allis et al. (2007).

The structure and development of haustorial placentas in leptosporangiate ferns provide a clear-cut distinction between euphyllophytes and lycophytes.

Project description:This light and electron microscope study revealed that leptosporangiate ferns have highly distinctive gametophyte-sporophyte junctions characterized by sporophytic haustoria, the absence of intraplacental spaces and degenerating cells, and the early appearance of wall ingrowths in both generations. Other notable cytological features are highly pleomorphic plastids and mitochondrial aggregates in the gametophytic placental cells. Close similarities with the gametophyte-sporophyte junctions in Tmesipteris and major differences from those of homosporous lycophytes are in line with the placement of psilophytes and ferns in the same clade and distance both from lycophytes. A smooth interface between the two generations in Azolla suggests a clear-cut discontinuity between homosporous and heterosporous ferns, although this is the only heterosporous fern investigated to date. Similarities between the gametophyte-sporophyte junctions of leptosporangiate ferns and hornworts, when balanced against differences between them, are considered more likely the result of parallel evolution rather than homology.

The effects of the Nepal community forestry program on biodiversity conservation and carbon storage.

Project description:Approximately 15.5% of global forest is controlled by ~1 billion local people and the area under community control is increasing. However, there is limited empirical evidence as to whether community control is effective in providing critical global ecosystem services, such as biodiversity conservation and carbon storage. We assess the effectiveness of one example of community-controlled forest, Nepal's Community Forestry Program (CFP), at providing biodiversity conservation and carbon storage. Using data from 620 randomly selected CFP and non-CFP forest plots, we apply a robust matching method based on covariates to estimate whether CFPs are associated with greater biodiversity conservation or carbon storage. Our results reveal a significant positive effect of CFP on biodiversity, which is robust against the influence of unobserved covariates. Our results also suggest a significant negative effect of the CFP on aboveground tree and sapling carbon (AGC) at the national scale (-15.11 Mg C ha-1). However, the CFP has a mixed effect on carbon across geographic and topographic regions and in forests with different canopy covers. Though there were no significant effects of the CFP on AGC at lower altitudes, in the Terai or hill regions, and under closed canopies, there were positive effects in open canopies (25.84 Mg C ha-1) at lower slopes (25.51 Mg C ha-1) and negative effects at higher altitudes (-22.81 Mg C ha-1) and higher slopes (-17.72 Mg C ha-1). Our sensitivity analysis revealed that the positive effects are robust to unobserved covariates, which is not true for the negative results. In aggregate, our results demonstrate that CFP can be an effective forest management strategy to contribute to global ecosystem services such as biodiversity, and to a lesser extent carbon.

Comparison of four medium cut-off dialyzers.

Project description:BackgroundRecently, several pharmaceutical companies have developed new medium cut-off (MCO) dialyzers for expanded hemodialysis (HDx). This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of four MCO dialyzers, against each other and versus high-flux hemodialysis (HD) and post-dilution hemodiafiltration (HDF).MethodsA prospective study was carried out on 23 patients who underwent six dialysis sessions: two sessions with the FX80 Cordiax in HD and HDF, and four HDx sessions with the Phylther 17-SD, Vie-18X, Elisio HX19 and Theranova 400 dialyzers. The reduction ratios (RRs) of urea, creatinine, β2-microglobulin, myoglobin, kappa free immunoglobulin light chain (κFLC), prolactin, α1-microglobulin, α1-acid glycoprotein, lambda (λFLC) and albumin were compared. Dialysate albumin loss was also measured.ResultsThe differences in efficacy between the evaluated dialyzers were minimal in small molecules and even up to the size of β2-microglobulin. The main differences were found between myoglobin, κFLC, prolactin, α1-microglobulin and λFLC RRs, in which all four MCO dialyzers, with similar efficacy, were clearly superior to HD and slightly inferior to HDF treatment. Albumin losses in the dialysate with HD dialyzers were <1 g and between 1.5 and 2.5 g in HDx and HDF. The global removal score values were similar in all four HDx treatments, and again significantly higher than those with HD.ConclusionsThe results of the four MCO dialyzers evaluated in this study showed good efficiency, with no significant performance differences between them while being completely safe in terms of albumin loss. Likewise, the study confirms the superiority of HDx over high-flux HD with an efficacy close to that of post-dilution HDF.

A tRNA modification balances carbon and nitrogen metabolism by regulating phosphate homeostasis.

Project description:Cells must appropriately sense and integrate multiple metabolic resources to commit to proliferation. Here, we report that S. cerevisiae cells regulate carbon and nitrogen metabolic homeostasis through tRNA U34-thiolation. Despite amino acid sufficiency, tRNA-thiolation deficient cells appear amino acid starved. In these cells, carbon flux towards nucleotide synthesis decreases, and trehalose synthesis increases, resulting in a starvation-like metabolic signature. Thiolation mutants have only minor translation defects. However, in these cells phosphate homeostasis genes are strongly down-regulated, resulting in an effectively phosphate-limited state. Reduced phosphate enforces a metabolic switch, where glucose-6-phosphate is routed towards storage carbohydrates. Notably, trehalose synthesis, which releases phosphate and thereby restores phosphate availability, is central to this metabolic rewiring. Thus, cells use thiolated tRNAs to perceive amino acid sufficiency, balance carbon and amino acid metabolic flux and grow optimally, by controlling phosphate availability. These results further biochemically explain how phosphate availability determines a switch to a 'starvation-state'.
