Insights on the genus Acronymolpus Samuelson with new synonymies and exclusion of Stethotes Baly from the fauna of New Caledonia (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Eumolpinae).

Project description:In this work, several taxonomic problems affecting the recently erected genus Acronymolpus Samuelson, 2015, endemic to New Caledonia, are addressed. Two of the three New Caledonian species described in Stethotes Baly are transferred to Acronymolpus and their priority is recognized over the names proposed in the revision of this genus. Moreover, different forms of Acronymolpus always found in sympatry, one reddish and larger, and the other black and smaller, were each given species status in that revision, but they are recognized here as the females and males, respectively, of the same species. The taxonomic summary of these discoveries is: (i) A. bertiae (Jolivet, Verma & Mille, 2007), comb. n. = A. meteorus Samuelson, 2015, syn. n., and A. turbo Samuelson, 2015, syn. n.; and (ii) A. jourdani (Jolivet, Verma & Mille, 2013), comb. n. = A. gressitti Samuelson, 2015, syn. n., and A. joliveti Samuelson, 2015, syn. n. New distribution data and the male genitalia and the spermatheca of the two valid species of Acronymolpus are described for the first time with reference to taxonomically important characters. Finally, the last New Caledonian species described in Stethotes is recognized here as a member of the endemic genus Taophila Heller: T. mandjeliae (Jolivet, Verma & Mille, 2010), comb. n.

Mitochondrial genome of Chrysochares punctatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:Here, we determined the nearly complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Chrysochares punctatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae), an important insect pest on Apocynum venetum in Northwestern China. This mitogenome was 14,451 bp long, encoding 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 21 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 ribosomal RNA genes. The C. punctatus mitogenome presented an A + T content of 75.11%, with a positive AT-skew (0.064) and a negative GC-skew (-0.192). Ten PCGs started with a typical ATN codon, whereas the remaining three PCGs started with AAC (cox1) and TTG (nad1 and nad2). All tRNAs had a typical secondary cloverleaf structure, except for trnS1 which lacked the dihydrouridine arm. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of 13 PCGs recovered a phylogeny within Chrysomelidae: (((Chrysomelinae + Galerucinae), (((Eumolpinae, Lamprosomatinae), Cassidinae), Criocerinae)), Bruchinae).

Project description:The genus Rasilinus gen. n. is described (type species Rasilinus tchambicus sp. n.). Nine new species: Rasilinus bicolor sp. n., Rasilinus bifurcatus sp. n., Rasilinus bimaculatus sp. n., Rasilinus grandidens sp. n., Rasilinus longulus sp. n., Rasilinus subgemellus sp. n., Rasilinus subnodulus sp. n., Rasilinus tchambicus sp. n., Rasilinus virgatus sp. n. are described from New Caledonia. Illustrations of the external morphology, male and female terminalia, dorsal habitus colour photographs of the adults, key to species and distribution map of the new genus Rasilinus are provided.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Colasposoma dauricum auripenne (Motschlsky, 1860) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae).

Project description:The sweet potato leaf beetle Colasposoma dauricum auripenne (Motschlsky, 1860) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae) is one of the main pests in sweet potato. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Colasposoma dauricum auripenne (Motschlsky, 1860) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae) has been sequenced. The mitogenome length is 15,614 bp (GenBank: MW528208), which includes 13 typical insect protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and it contains 78.6% A + T and 21.4% G + C. All PCGs start with ATD (ATT, ATA, ATG) codon and stop with termination codon TAA, TAG and single T. The phylogenetic tree showed that Colasposoma had been cluster together, and form a sister group relationship with Pseudocolaspis. The complete mitogenome of C. dauricum auripenne would help understand Chrysomelidae evolution.

Project description:Colasposoma dauricum Mannerheim, 1849, is an important insect pest distributed in most areas of China. The complete mitochondrial genome of C. dauricum was sequenced and analyzed. The phylogenetic relationships between C. dauricum and other 10 species in the superfamily Chrysomeloidea were reconstructed using maximum likelihood (ML) methods based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences, the phylogenetic analysis showed that C. dauricum is closely related to Basilepta fulvipes in the same subfamily.

Project description:The study of external morphology of the New Caledonian leaf beetle Dematochroma foaensis Jolivet, Verma & Mille (Chrysomelidae, Eumolpinae, Colaspoidini) substantiates its new combination into the genus Rhyparida Baly (Chrysomelidae, Eumolpinae, Nodinini). The species is redescribed here to highlight characters important for suprageneric diagnosis. This is the second species of Nodinini found in New Caledonia, otherwise rich in species of Colaspoidini, raising questions about the paucity of Rhyparida and this tribe in New Caledonian fauna, when they are dominant in surrounding archipelagoes, and very rich in potential source areas such as Australia and New Guinea. Some alternative explanations for this pattern are advanced, serving as alternative hypotheses until our knowledge on the ecology of these species improves or supported phylogenetic scenarios become available for this group.

All the specimens were collected in leaf litter by R. Anderson and S. and J. Peck.
