Quantum yield and excitation rate of single molecules close to metallic nanostructures.

ABSTRACT: The interaction of dyes and metallic nanostructures strongly affects the fluorescence and can lead to significant fluorescence enhancement at plasmonic hot spots, but also to quenching. Here we present a method to distinguish the individual contributions to the changes of the excitation, radiative and non-radiative rate and use this information to determine the quantum yields for single molecules. The method is validated by precisely placing single fluorescent dyes with respect to gold nanoparticles as well as with respect to the excitation polarization using DNA origami nanostructures. Following validation, measurements in zeromode waveguides reveal that suppression of the radiative rate and enhancement of the non-radiative rate lead to a reduced quantum yield. Because the method exploits the intrinsic blinking of dyes, it can generally be applied to fluorescence measurements in arbitrary nanophotonic environments.

Excitation Wavelength-Dependent Photoluminescence Decay of Hybrid Gold/Quantum Dot Nanostructures.

Project description:Hybrid nanostructures comprised of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and quantum dots (QDs) have been found to exhibit unique, new optical properties due to the interaction that occurs between the MNPs and QDs. The aim of this work is to understand how the exciton-plasmon interaction in these systems is dependent on the excitation wavelength. The nanoassemblies consisted of gold (Au) NPs coated in a silica (SiO2) shell of a controlled thickness and core/shell CdSe/CdS QDs adsorbed onto the SiO2 shells. Our findings show that the photoluminescence lifetimes of the hybrid constructs are dependent on the excitation wavelength relative to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au NPs. When the excitation wavelength is closer to the LSPR, the photoluminescence decay of the hybrid structures is faster. We demonstrate that by tuning the excitation wavelength close to the resonance, there is an enhancement in the exciton-plasmon coupling between the Au NPs and QDs resulting in a shortening in the QD photoluminescence lifetime. We then propose a possible mechanism to explain this excitation wavelength-dependent phenomenon.

Quantum size effects on the work function of metallic thin film nanostructures.

Project description:In this paper, we present the direct observation of quantum size effects (QSE) on the work function in ultrathin Pb films. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we show that the very existence of quantum well states (QWS) in these ultrathin films profoundly affects the measured tunneling decay constant kappa, resulting in a very rich phenomenon of "quantum oscillations" in kappa as a function of thickness, L, and bias voltage, V(s). More specifically, we find that the phase of the quantum oscillations in kappa vs. L depends sensitively upon the bias voltage, which often results in a total phase reversal at different biases. On the other hand, at very low sample bias (|V(s)| < 0.03 V) the measurement of kappa vs. L accurately reflects the quantum size effect on the work function. In particular, the minima in the quantum oscillations of kappa vs. L occur at the locations where QWS cross the Fermi energy, thus directly unraveling the QSE on the work function in ultrathin films, which was predicted more than three decades ago. This further clarifies several contradictions regarding the relationship between the QWS locations and the work function.

Normal Incidence Excitation of Out-of-Plane Lattice Resonances in Bipartite Arrays of Metallic Nanostructures.

Project description:As a result of their coherent interaction, two-dimensional periodic arrays of metallic nanostructures support collective modes commonly known as lattice resonances. Among them, out-of-plane lattice resonances, for which the nanostructures are polarized in the direction perpendicular to the array, are particularly interesting since their unique configuration minimizes radiative losses. Consequently, these modes present extremely high quality factors and field enhancements that make them ideal for a wide range of applications. However, for the same reasons, their excitation is very challenging and has only been achieved at oblique incidence, which adds a layer of complexity to experiments and poses some limitations on their usage. Here, we present an approach to excite out-of-plane lattice resonances in bipartite arrays under normal incidence. Our method is based on exploiting the electric-magnetic coupling between the nanostructures, which has been traditionally neglected in the characterization of arrays made of metallic nanostructures. Using a rigorous coupled dipole model, we demonstrate that this coupling provides a general mechanism to excite out-of-plane lattice resonances under normal incidence conditions. We complete our study with a comprehensive analysis of a potential implementation of our results using an array of nanodisks with the inclusion of a substrate and a coating. This work provides an efficient approach for the excitation of out-of-plane lattice resonances at normal incidence, thus paving the way for the leverage of the extraordinary properties of these optical modes in a wide range of applications.

Room temperature excitation spectroscopy of single quantum dots.

Project description:We report a single molecule detection scheme to investigate excitation spectra of single emitters at room temperature. We demonstrate the potential of single emitter photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy by recording excitation spectra of single CdSe nanocrystals over a wide spectral range of 100 nm. The spectra exhibit emission intermittency, characteristic of single emitters. We observe large variations in the spectra close to the band edge, which represent the individual heterogeneity of the observed quantum dots. We also find specific excitation wavelengths for which the single quantum dots analyzed show an increased propensity for a transition to a long-lived dark state. We expect that the additional capability of recording excitation spectra at room temperature from single emitters will enable insights into the photophysics of emitters that so far have remained inaccessible.

Camouflaged Nanosilver with Excitation Wavelength Dependent High Quantum Yield for Targeted Theranostic.

Project description:The present study shows the thorough investigations on optical properties and hydrodynamic diameters of glutathione (GSH) stabilized nanosilver clusters (AgNC) at different stages of synthesis and engineering for the optimized absolute quantum yield to generate fluorescent images of Dalton Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) tumour bearing mice. The initial increment of quantum yield was wavelength dependent and finally it became 0.509 which was due to the camouflaging or entrapment of AgNC in macrophages membranes. The potentiality of macrophages membrane camouflaged silver nanoclusters (AgM) was reflected in the cell viability assay and confocal based live dead cell assay where the AgM has better cell killing effect compared to AgNC with reduced dosage and in vivo mice imaging generated the clear visualization at the tumour sites. Therefore, from the present study, it can be considered that the camouflaged nanosilver can be used for targeted theranostic applications.

Absorption and Quantum Yield of Single Conjugated Polymer Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) Molecules.

Project description:We simultaneously measured the absorption and emission of single conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) molecules in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix using near-critical xenon to enhance the photothermal contrast for direct absorption measurements. We directly measured the number of monomers and the quantum yield of single conjugated polymer molecules. Simultaneous absorption and emission measurements provided new insight into the photophysics of single conjugated polymers under optical excitation: quenching in larger molecules is more efficient than in smaller ones. Photoinduced traps and defects formed under prolonged illumination lead to decrease of both polymer fluorescence and absorption signals with the latter declining slower.

Plasmon-Mediated Drilling in Thin Metallic Nanostructures.

Project description:Thin and ultraflat conductive surfaces are of particular interest to use as substrates for tip-enhanced spectroscopy applications. Tip-enhanced spectroscopy exploits the excitation of a localized surface plasmon resonance mode at the apex of a metallized atomic force microscope tip, confining and enhancing the local electromagnetic field by several orders of magnitude. This allows for nanoscale mapping of the surface with high spatial resolution and surface sensitivity, as demonstrated when coupled to local Raman measurements. In gap-mode tip-enhanced spectroscopy, the specimen of interest is deposited onto a flat metallic surface and probed by a metallic tip, allowing for further electromagnetic confinement and subsequent enhancement. We investigate here a geometry where a gold tip is used in conjunction with a silver nanoplate, thus forming a heterometallic platform for local enhancement. When irradiated, a plasmon-mediated reaction is triggered at the tip-substrate junction due to the enhanced electric field and the transfer of hot electrons from the tip to the nanoplate. This resulting nanoscale reaction appears to be sufficient to ablate the thin silver plates even under weak laser intensity. Such an approach may be further exploited for patterning metallic nanostructures or photoinduced chemical reactions at metal surfaces.

Biexciton quantum yield of single semiconductor nanocrystals from photon statistics.

Project description:Biexciton properties strongly affect the usability of a light emitter in quantum photon sources and lasers but are difficult to measure for single fluorophores at room temperature due to luminescence intermittency and bleaching at the high excitation fluences usually required. Here, we observe the biexciton (BX) to exciton (X) to ground photoluminescence cascade of single colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) under weak excitation in a g((2)) photon correlation measurement and show that the normalized amplitude of the cascade feature is equal to the ratio of the BX to X fluorescence quantum yields. This imposes a limit on the attainable depth of photon antibunching and provides a robust means to study single emitter biexciton physics. In NC samples, we show that the BX quantum yield is considerably inhomogeneous, consistent with the defect sensitivity expected of the Auger nonradiative recombination mechanism. The method can be extended to study X,BX spectral and polarization correlations.

Metallic glass nanostructures of tunable shape and composition.

Project description:Metals of hybrid nano-/microstructures are of broad technological and fundamental interests. Manipulation of shape and composition on the nanoscale, however, is challenging, especially for multicomponent alloys such as metallic glasses. Although top-down approaches have demonstrated nanomoulding, they are limited to very few alloy systems. Here we report a facile method to synthesize metallic glass nanoarchitectures that can be applied to a broad range of glass-forming alloys. This strategy, using multitarget carousel oblique angle deposition, offers the opportunity to achieve control over size, shape and composition of complex alloys at the nanoscale. As a consequence, nanostructures of programmable three-dimensional shapes and tunable compositions are realized on wafer scale for metallic glasses including the marginal glass formers. Realizing nanostructures in a wide compositional range allows chemistry optimization for technological usage of metallic glass nanostructures, and also enables the fundamental study on size, composition and fabrication dependences of metallic glass properties.

Shaped and Feedback-Controlled Excitation of Single Molecules in the Weak-Field Limit.

Project description:Coherent control uses tailored femtosecond pulse shapes to influence quantum pathways and drive a light-induced process toward a specific outcome. There has been a long-standing debate whether the absorption properties or the probability for population to remain in an excited state of a molecule can be influenced by the pulse shape, even if only a single photon is absorbed. Most such experiments are performed on many molecules simultaneously, so that ensemble averaging reduces the access to quantum effects. Here, we demonstrate systematic coherent control experiments on the fluorescence intensity of a single molecule in the weak-field limit. We demonstrate that a delay scan of interfering pulses reproduces the excitation spectrum of the molecule upon Fourier transformation, but that the spectral phase of a pulse sequence does not affect the transition probability. We generalize this result to arbitrary pulse shapes by performing the first closed-loop coherent control experiments on a single molecule.
