Market Competitiveness Evaluation of Mechanical Equipment with a Pairwise Comparisons Hierarchical Model.

ABSTRACT: This paper provides a description of how market competitiveness evaluations concerning mechanical equipment can be made in the context of multi-criteria decision environments. It is assumed that, when we are evaluating the market competitiveness, there are limited number of candidates with some required qualifications, and the alternatives will be pairwise compared on a ratio scale. The qualifications are depicted as criteria in hierarchical structure. A hierarchical decision model called PCbHDM was used in this study based on an analysis of its desirable traits. Illustration and comparison shows that the PCbHDM provides a convenient and effective tool for evaluating the market competitiveness of mechanical equipment. The researchers and practitioners might use findings of this paper in application of PCbHDM.

The European tomato market. An approach by export competitiveness maps.

Project description:Most empirical studies examining the export competitiveness of a country in a target market are undertaken by focusing on supply, only analysing the group of competing countries. In addition, if the target market to be analysed is extensive, like the European Union, it is generally analysed as a whole. This study presents an evaluation of the tomato export competitiveness, from a differentiated demand perspective, analysing its main customers markets in the context of European Union. The methodological framework is implemented through Constant Market Share to analyze variations in exports, allowing the portion attributable to competitiveness and segregation into general or specific competitiveness to be quantified. The Constant Market Share was adapted to focus on the differentiated demand so as to observe the influence of the worldwide crisis (2007/08) on the European tomato market. This study allows the analysis of profile changes into the competitor exporting economies. As a contribution to the methodology, this study presents a new graphical way of representing the results of Constant Market Share methodology by means of export competitiveness maps in the European tomato market for the group for each main competitor in each European client market. According to our results, Spain and Belgium are candidate countries to be competitive in the main European markets.

Classifying gene expression profiles from pairwise mRNA comparisons.

Project description:We present a new approach to molecular classification based on mRNA comparisons. Our method, referred to as the top-scoring pair(s) (TSP) classifier, is motivated by current technical and practical limitations in using gene expression microarray data for class prediction, for example to detect disease, identify tumors or predict treatment response. Accurate statistical inference from such data is difficult due to the small number of observations, typically tens, relative to the large number of genes, typically thousands. Moreover, conventional methods from machine learning lead to decisions which are usually very difficult to interpret in simple or biologically meaningful terms. In contrast, the TSP classifier provides decision rules which i) involve very few genes and only relative expression values (e.g., comparing the mRNA counts within a single pair of genes); ii) are both accurate and transparent; and iii) provide specific hypotheses for follow-up studies. In particular, the TSP classifier achieves prediction rates with standard cancer data that are as high as those of previous studies which use considerably more genes and complex procedures. Finally, the TSP classifier is parameter-free, thus avoiding the type of over-fitting and inflated estimates of performance that result when all aspects of learning a predictor are not properly cross-validated.

Identifying and prioritizing industry-level competitiveness factors: evidence from pharmaceutical market.

Project description:BackgroundPharmaceutical industry is knowledge-intensive and highly globalized, in both developed and developing countries. On the other hand, if companies want to survive, they should be able to compete well in both domestic and international markets. The main purpose of this paper is therefore to develop and prioritize key factors affecting companies' competitiveness in pharmaceutical industry. Based on an extensive literature review, a valid and reliable questionnaire was designed, which was later filled up by participants from the industry. To prioritize the key factors, we used the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS).ResultsThe results revealed that human capital and macro-level policies were two key factors placed at the highest rank in respect of their effects on the competitiveness considering the industry-level in pharmaceutical area.ConclusionThis study provides fundamental evidence for policymakers and managers in pharma context to enable them formulating better polices to be proactively competitive and responsive to the markets' needs.

Blazing Signature Filter: a library for fast pairwise similarity comparisons.

Project description:BackgroundIdentifying similarities between datasets is a fundamental task in data mining and has become an integral part of modern scientific investigation. Whether the task is to identify co-expressed genes in large-scale expression surveys or to predict combinations of gene knockouts which would elicit a similar phenotype, the underlying computational task is often a multi-dimensional similarity test. As datasets continue to grow, improvements to the efficiency, sensitivity or specificity of such computation will have broad impacts as it allows scientists to more completely explore the wealth of scientific data.ResultsThe Blazing Signature Filter (BSF) is a highly efficient pairwise similarity algorithm which enables extensive data mining within a reasonable amount of time. The algorithm transforms datasets into binary metrics, allowing it to utilize the computationally efficient bit operators and provide a coarse measure of similarity. We demonstrate the utility of our algorithm using two common bioinformatics tasks: identifying data sets with similar gene expression profiles, and comparing annotated genomes.ConclusionsThe BSF is a highly efficient pairwise similarity algorithm that can scale to billions of comparisons without the need for specialized hardware.

Pairwise comparisons across species are problematic when analyzing functional genomic data.

Project description:There is considerable interest in comparing functional genomic data across species. One goal of such work is to provide an integrated understanding of genome and phenotype evolution. Most comparative functional genomic studies have relied on multiple pairwise comparisons between species, an approach that does not incorporate information about the evolutionary relationships among species. The statistical problems that arise from not considering these relationships can lead pairwise approaches to the wrong conclusions and are a missed opportunity to learn about biology that can only be understood in an explicit phylogenetic context. Here, we examine two recently published studies that compare gene expression across species with pairwise methods, and find reason to question the original conclusions of both. One study interpreted pairwise comparisons of gene expression as support for the ortholog conjecture, the hypothesis that orthologs tend to have more similar attributes (expression in this case) than paralogs. The other study interpreted pairwise comparisons of embryonic gene expression across distantly related animals as evidence for a distinct evolutionary process that gave rise to phyla. In each study, distinct patterns of pairwise similarity among species were originally interpreted as evidence of particular evolutionary processes, but instead, we find that they reflect species relationships. These reanalyses concretely show the inadequacy of pairwise comparisons for analyzing functional genomic data across species. It will be critical to adopt phylogenetic comparative methods in future functional genomic work. Fortunately, phylogenetic comparative biology is also a rapidly advancing field with many methods that can be directly applied to functional genomic data.

A Bayesian approach to time-varying latent strengths in pairwise comparisons.

Project description:The famous Bradley-Terry model for pairwise comparisons is widely used for ranking objects and is often applied to sports data. In this paper we extend the Bradley-Terry model by allowing time-varying latent strengths of compared objects. The time component is modelled with barycentric rational interpolation and Gaussian processes. We also allow for the inclusion of additional information in the form of outcome probabilities. Our models are evaluated and compared on toy data set and real sports data from ATP tennis matches and NBA games. We demonstrated that using Gaussian processes is advantageous compared to barycentric rational interpolation as they are more flexible to model discontinuities and are less sensitive to initial parameters settings. However, all investigated models proved to be robust to over-fitting and perform well with situations of volatile and of constant latent strengths. When using barycentric rational interpolation it has turned out that applying Bayesian approach gives better results than by using MLE. Performance of the models is further improved by incorporating the outcome probabilities.

Bayesian estimation of nonsynonymous/synonymous rate ratios for pairwise sequence comparisons.

Project description:The nonsynonymous/synonymous rate ratio (ω = d(N)/d(S)) is an important measure of the mode and strength of natural selection acting on nonsynonymous mutations in protein-coding genes. The simplest such analysis is the estimation of the d(N)/d(S) ratio using two sequences. Both heuristic counting methods and the maximum-likelihood (ML) method based on a codon substitution model are widely used for such analysis. However, these methods do not have nice statistical properties, as the estimates can be zero or infinity in some data sets, so that their means and variances are infinite. In large genome-scale comparisons, such extreme estimates (either 0 or ∞) of ω and sequence distance (t) are common. Here, we implement a Bayesian method to estimate ω and t in pairwise sequence comparisons. Using a combination of computer simulation and real data analysis, we show that the Bayesian estimates have better statistical properties than the ML estimates, because the prior on ω and t shrinks the posterior of those parameters away from extreme values. We also calculate the posterior probability for ω > 1 as a Bayesian alternative to the likelihood ratio test. The new method is computationally efficient and may be useful for genome-scale comparisons of protein-coding gene sequences.

Hierarchical auxetic mechanical metamaterials.

Project description:Auxetic mechanical metamaterials are engineered systems that exhibit the unusual macroscopic property of a negative Poisson's ratio due to sub-unit structure rather than chemical composition. Although their unique behaviour makes them superior to conventional materials in many practical applications, they are limited in availability. Here, we propose a new class of hierarchical auxetics based on the rotating rigid units mechanism. These systems retain the enhanced properties from having a negative Poisson's ratio with the added benefits of being a hierarchical system. Using simulations on typical hierarchical multi-level rotating squares, we show that, through design, one can control the extent of auxeticity, degree of aperture and size of the different pores in the system. This makes the system more versatile than similar non-hierarchical ones, making them promising candidates for industrial and biomedical applications, such as stents and skin grafts.

Situational and Mixed Business Strategy Analysis for Market Competitiveness: An Exploration in Context of Africa

Project description:The purpose of this study is to review various business strategy options and the experience of some of the companies out there who have managed to create a new market space in already declining and saturated industry. Irrespective of sizes of companies, small, medium or large, it is customary to evolve a business strategy, in order to set the future strategic position of the firm in the marketplace in terms of product and service offering, pricing and growth strategy. An organization could have an ideal strategy formulation in place, but without proper implementation mechanism it would be waste of resource and time and a pointless effort that could not produce the expected result. The research methodology employed in this study is literature review of peer reviewed articles published in quality journals. The analysis and discussion led to findings that there is always a room for incremental innovation and customer value proposition that would lead to create a new demand and market space. Moreover, there is no ‘one size fit’ strategy that would give winning edge for businesses, rather situational approach and combined strategy option could be the approach recommended.

Brain natriuretic peptide measurements using standard biochemical equipment: Comparisons with conventional immunoassays

Project description:Background Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is an essential cardiac biomarker for diagnosing heart failure and for prognoses in patients with various cardiac diseases. However, measurement requires immunological assays that are not available in every hospital. Recently, a novel BNP kit (Nanopia BNP-A, Sekisui Inc.; BNPn) that uses general-purpose, automated, biochemical analyzers has become commercially available. We assessed how its accuracy and utility compare with those of conventional immunological tests. Methods and results We retrospectively collected 1491 conventional BNP measurements (BNPc), which had been clinically indicated for BNP testing and for which residual samples were still stored in the laboratory. We measured BNP using the novel kit and determined the correlation of BNP levels between the two methods. We also assessed the predictive value of both BNP measurements for major cardiac events (MACEs). The analytical performance of both measuring methods was similar. Log-transformed BNP measured by both methods showed strong correlation (r = 0.92); however, log-transformed BNPn was significantly higher than log-transformed BNPc (p<0.001). BNPc of 200 ng/L was used to stratify patients into two groups. According to the regression formula between the two methods, we determined a cut-off value of BNPn as 250 ng/L. During a median of 15 months of follow-up, 43 MACEs developed. Both BNPc and BNPn were associated with MACEs. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that both BNPc and BNPn cut-off values stratified the high-risk group for prognostication. The diagnostic and prognostic utilities were proven even if the lower cut-off values (BNPc = 100 ng/L, BNPn = 130 ng/L) were employed. Conclusions A new BNP measurement using biochemical equipment provides prognostic value similar to that of conventional BNP analysis; thus, it should prove useful in hospitals in which conventional immunological examinations are not available.
