On the identity of Blanco's Cissus frutescens and its correct name in Melicope (Rutaceae) with neotypification of Cissus arborea Blanco.

ABSTRACT: The names Cissus frutescens and Cissus arborea have a long history of confusion. Cissus frutescens Blanco belongs to the genus Melicope (Rutaceae) and we herein correct a nomenclatural mistake made by T.G. Hartley in the revision of Melicope. The name Melicope confusa (Merr.) P.S. Liu was accepted for this taxon by Hartley. However, Cissus frutescens Blanco represents the earliest name for this entity and a new combination, Melicope frutescens (Blanco) Appelhans & J.Wen is herein proposed. Neotypification of Cissus arborea Blanco is also provided.

Melicope balgooyi Appelhans, W.L. Wagner & K.R. Wood, a new species and new record in Melicope section Melicope (Rutaceae) for the Austral Islands.

Project description:Melicope balgooyi, a new species of Melicope (Rutaceae) is described. It is known only from the Austral Islands in the South Pacific (French Polynesia). However, it is not closely related to the other two species previously known from the Austral Islands, which are part of Melicope section Vitiflorae. The new species belongs to Melicope section Melicope and is most closely related to species from New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands, and the Society Islands. The new species has alternate to sub-opposite leaves, which is a very rare arrangement in Melicope and has only been described for two other species of the genus so far.

Phylogeny of Hawaiian Melicope (Rutaceae): RAD-seq Resolves Species Relationships and Reveals Ancient Introgression.

Project description:Hawaiian Melicope are one of the major adaptive radiations of the Hawaiian Islands comprising 54 endemic species. The lineage is monophyletic with an estimated crown age predating the rise of the current high islands. Phylogenetic inference based on Sanger sequencing has not been sufficient to resolve species or deeper level relationships. Here, we apply restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) to the lineage to infer phylogenetic relationships. We employ Quartet Sampling to assess information content and statistical support, and to quantify discordance as well as partitioned ABBA-BABA tests to uncover evidence of introgression. Our new results drastically improved resolution of relationships within Hawaiian Melicope. The lineage is divided into five fully supported main clades, two of which correspond to morphologically circumscribed infrageneric groups. We provide evidence for both ancestral and current hybridization events. We confirm the necessity for a taxonomic revision of the Melicope section Pelea, as well as a re-evaluation of several species complexes by combining genomic and morphological data.

The complete chloroplast genome of Melicope pteleifolia (Champ. ex Benth.) T. G. Hartley (Rutaceae).

Project description:Melicope pteleifolia, an important medicinal and horticultural plant, has antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Here, the complete chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia was sequenced and its phylogenetic relationship was investigated. The complete chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia was 159,014 bp in size, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IR, 27,640 bp), a large single copy region (LSC, 85,124 bp), and a small single copy region (SSC, 18,610 bp). The GC content of the chloroplast genome was 38.3%. A total of 133 genes were annotated, including 88 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. pteleifolia clusters together with species of Toddalia, Zanthoxylum, Tetradium, Phellodendron, and Casimiroa.

The third complete chloroplast genome of Melicope pteleifolia (Rutaceae): a widely used folk medicinal herb.

Project description:Melicope pteleifolia commonly known as thin evodia, is an herb used to therapy eczema, dermatitis, and other ailments in traditional Chinese medicine. Here, we reported the third complete chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia based on next-generation sequencing. The third chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia is 158,933 bp in length consisting of large and small single-copy regions of length 85,020 and 18,607 bp, separated by two IR regions of 27,683 bp. The overall GC content was 38.30%. De novo assembly and annotation showed the chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia encodes 134 genes, including 89 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. A huge intraspecies variation was found with 248 SNPs and 97 INDELs among three assemblies of M. pteleifolia. Phylogenetic tree indicated that three assemblies of M. pteleifolia form a clade, sister to the genus Phellodendron and Casimiroa.

The correct name in Oenothera for Gauradrummondii (Onagraceae).

Project description:In 2007, Wagner and Hoch proposed the new name Oenotheraxenogaura W.L.Wagner & Hoch for the species then known as Gauradrummondii (Spach) Torrey & A. Gray (non Oenotheradrummondii Hooker, 1834). However, the authors overlooked the availability of Gaurahispida Bentham (1840) for this species. Accordingly, we herewith make the appropriate new combination for this species, Oenotherahispida (Bentham) W.L.Wagner, Hoch & Zarucchi, and place Oenotheraxenogaura in synonymy.

Reduction of the Hawaiian genus Platydesma into Melicope section Pelea (Rutaceae) and notes on the monophyly of the section.

Project description:Platydesma, an endemic genus to the Hawaiian Islands containing four species, has long been considered of obscure origin. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have unequivocally placed Platydesma within the widespread genus Melicope as sister to the rest of the Hawaiian species of Melicope. This makes submerging Platydesma into Melicope necessary. We make the necessary new combinations: Melicope cornuta (Hillebr.) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, M. cornuta var. decurrens (B.C.Stone) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, M. remyi (Sherff) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner, and M. rostrata (Hillebr.) Appelhans, K.R. Wood & W.L. Wagner. An additional species that has been recognized within Platydesma should now be recognized under its original name M. spathulata A. Gray. All Hawaiian species belong to Melicope section Pelea. Our molecular phylogenetic studies also showed that in addition to merging Platydesma into section Pelea, five species described from New Caledonia need to be excluded from the section in order to achieve monophyly of section Pelea.

Project description:Meclicope pteleifolia is a traditional medicinal herb and edible plant in Southeast China. Here, we report the complete chloroplast genome of M. pteleifolia. The chloroplast genome is 159,012 bp in length with 38.33% GC content, containing a small single-copy (SSC) region (18,609 bp), a large single-copy (LSC) region (851 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs: 27,640 bp each). A total of 131 genes were predicted, including 84 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 2 pseudogenes. Phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast genomes of 17 plant species shows that M. pteleifolia is closest to Zanthoxylum and Casimiroa. These complete chloroplast genomes can be subsequently used for researches of Rutaceae.

Project description:In 1978 when Straley adopted the name Oenothera fruticosa L. subsp. glauca (Michx.) Straley for one of the two recognized subspecies of O. fruticosa it was the correct name for this taxon; however, since that time the botanical code has changed so that now an autonym is treated as having priority over the name or names of the same date and rank that established it. This change means that since 1981 O. fruticosa subsp. glauca was no longer the correct name. The appropriate combination for it is made here as O. fruticosa L. subsp. tetragona (Roth) W.L. Wagner. Original material for the basionym, O. tetragona, is no longer extant so a neotype is designated.

Project description:In 1953, Hara provided new combinations for many sectional and species names when he combined Jussiaea L. with Ludwigia L., and at the time, Ludwigiasect.Oligospermum (Micheli) H.Hara was the correct name for one well-defined section. However, subsequent changes to/clarifications of the botanical code have necessitated a change for that name in that now an autonym is treated as having priority over the name or names of the same date and rank that established it. Since Hara's combination was based on Jussiaeasect.Oligospermum Micheli, the correct name for this section is Ludwigiasect.Jussiaea (L.) Hoch, W.L.Wagner, & P.H.Raven.
