Data analysis and other considerations concerning the study of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys by Atom Probe Tomography.

ABSTRACT: Atom Probe Tomography (APT) analysis and hardness measurements were used to characterize the early stages of precipitation in an Al-0.51 at%Mg-0.94 at%Si alloy as reported in the accompanying Acta Materialia paper [1]. The changes in microstructure were investigated after single-stage or multi-stage heat treatments including natural ageing at 298 K (NA), pre-ageing at 353 K (PA), and automotive paint-bake ageing conditions at 453 K (PB). This article provides and a detailed report on the experimental conditions and the data analysis methods used for this investigation. Careful design of experimental conditions and analysis methods was carried out to obtain consistent and reliable results. Detailed data on clustering for prolonged NA and PA treatments have been reported.

Formation of strength platform in cast Al-Si-Mg-Cu alloys.

Project description:Over the past several decades, it was generally believed that the strength of the industrially widely used cast Al-Si-Mg-Cu alloys enhanced monotonously with increasing Cu content. However, in this study using cast Al9Si0.5MgxCu (x = 0,0.2,0.4,0.6,0.85,1.0,1.25, in wt.%) alloys under T6 heat-treated condition, it was found that the hardness and yield strength of the heat-treated alloys showed a platform in the composition range from 0.4 wt.% to 0.85 wt.% Cu, while still increased with increasing Cu content before and after the platform. With increasing Cu content, the β-Mg2Si intermetallic phase decreased and disappeared at 0.85 wt.% Cu, while the Q-Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 and θ-Al2Cu intermetallic phases increased in the as-cast alloys. After heat treatment, the micron-scale intermetallic phases were dissolved into the Al matrix and precipitated as the nanoscale β″, Q' and θ' strengthening phases. With increasing Cu content, the β″ precipitate decreased and vanished at 0.85 wt.% Cu, while the Q' and θ' precipitates increased in the heat-treated alloys. The trade-off of the phases induces the platform in the strength of the heat-treated alloys, and further increase of the Cu content in this undetected trapped platform range is not favorited industrially as it only decreases ductility.

Thermal Creep Behavior and Creep Crystallization of Al-Mg-Si Aluminum Alloys.

Project description:The experimental temperature is 613.15~763.15 K, and the strain rate is 0.01~10 s-1. The hot compression creep test of the 6082-T6 aluminum alloy sample is carried out by Gleeble-3500 hot compression simulation compressor, and its creep behavior is studied by scanning electron microscope. The results show that the DRX crystal has an irregular shape and that content of the Mg phase, Si phase, and Mn phase in the crystal are the main factors to change the color of DRX crystal. Temperature and strain rate are important factors affecting dynamic recrystallization. Reducing temperature and increasing strain rate will weaken dynamic recrystallization, and DRX critical condition and peak stress (strain) will increase. The constitutive equation of hot creep of 6082 aluminum alloy was established by introducing the work hardening rate-rheological stress curve, and the relationship between DRX critical condition, peak stress (strain) and parameter Z during creep was explored. Based on the Av rami equation, the prediction equation of the DRX volume fraction is established. With the increase of strain, DRX volume fraction is characterized by slow increase, then rapid increase and then slowly increase. In the hot -forming extrusion process of 6082 aluminum alloy, according to the volume fraction prediction equation, the DRX can be reduced, and the internal structure of the material can be optimized by changing the extrusion conditions and particle size.

Property Criteria for Automotive Al-Mg-Si Sheet Alloys.

Project description:In this study, property criteria for automotive Al-Mg-Si sheet alloys are outlined and investigated in the context of commercial alloys AA6016, AA6005A, AA6063 and AA6013. The parameters crucial to predicting forming behavior were determined by tensile tests, bending tests, cross-die tests, hole-expansion tests and forming limit curve analysis in the pre-aged temper after various storage periods following sheet production. Roping tests were performed to evaluate surface quality, for the deployment of these alloys as an outer panel material. Strength in service was also tested after a simulated paint bake cycle of 20 min at 185 °C, and the corrosion behavior was analyzed. The study showed that forming behavior is strongly dependent on the type of alloy and that it is influenced by the storage period after sheet production. Alloy AA6016 achieves the highest surface quality, and pre-ageing of alloy AA6013 facilitates superior strength in service. Corrosion behavior is good in AA6005A, AA6063 and AA6016, and only AA6013 shows a strong susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The results are discussed below with respect to the chemical composition, microstructure and texture of the Al-Mg-Si alloys studied, and decision-making criteria for appropriate automotive sheet alloys for specific applications are presented.

Atomic Structure of Hardening Precipitates in Al-Mg-Si Alloys: Influence of Minor Additions of Cu and Zn.

Project description:Shifting toward sustainability and low carbon emission necessitates recycling. Aluminum alloys can be recycled from postconsumer scrap with approximately 5% of the energy needed to produce the same amount of primary alloys. However, the presence of certain alloying elements, such as copper and zinc, as impurities in recycled Al-Mg-Si alloys is difficult to avoid. This work has investigated the influence of tiny concentrations of Cu (0.05 wt %) and Zn (0.06 wt %), individually and in combination, on the precipitate crystal structures in Al-Mg-Si alloys in peak aged and overaged conditions. To assess whether such concentrations can affect the hardening precipitate structures, atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography were adopted. The results indicate that low levels of Cu or Zn have a significant influence. Both elements showed a relatively high tendency to incorporate into precipitate structures, where Cu occupies specific atomic sites, creating its own local atomic configurations. However, Zn exhibited distinct behavior through the formation of extended local areas with 2-fold symmetry and mirror planes, not previously observed in precipitates in Al-Mg-Si alloys. Incorporation of Cu and/or Zn will influence the precipitates' electrochemical potential relative to matrix- and precipitate-free zones and thus the corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the presence of Cu/Zn structures (e.g., β'Cu, Q'/C) enhances the thermal stability of these precipitates and, accordingly, the mechanical properties of the material. The results obtained from this work are highly relevant to the topic of recycling of aluminum alloys, where accumulation of certain alloying elements is almost unavoidable; thus, tight compositional control might be critical to avoid quality degradation.

Hardness data related to pre-ageing, natural secondary ageing, and paint bake hardening in Al-Mg-Si alloys.

Project description:The effect of pre-ageing (PA) time and temperature on subsequent natural secondary ageing (NSA) and paint bake (PB) hardening of an AA6014 Al-Mg-Si alloy was systematically investigated, especially when both parameters change. A wide range of PA conditions was covered with temperatures ranging from 80 °C to 160 °C and times from several minutes to several days depending on the PA temperature. Hardness data for such pre-treatments measured by Brinell method are given. Hardness data measured during NSA are fitted by various functions. This dataset might be reused for further kinetic analysis of the clustering in Al-Mg-Si alloys or for the determination of the optimal PA tactics for industrial production.

Metallurgical Parameters Controlling the Eutectic Silicon Charateristics in Be-Treated Al-Si-Mg Alloys.

Project description:The present work was carried out on Al-7%Si-0.4%Mg-X alloy (where X = Mg, Fe, Sr or Be), where the effect of solidification rate on the eutectic silicon characteristics was investigated. Two solidification rates corresponding to dendrite arm spacings (DAS) of 24 and 65 μm were employed. Samples with 24 μm DAS were solution heat-treated at 540 °C for 5 and 12 h prior to quenching in warm water at 65 °C. Eutectic Si particle charateristics were measured using an image analyzer. The results show that the addition of 0.05% Be leads to partial modification of the Si particles. Full modification was only obtained when Sr was added in an amount of 150-200 ppm, depending on the applied solidification rate. Increasing the amount of Mg to 0.8% in Sr-modified alloys leads to a reduction in the effectiveness of Sr as the main modifier. Similar observations were made when the Fe content was increased in Be-treated alloys due to the Be-Fe interaction. Over-modification results in the precipitation of hard Sr-rich particles, mainly Al₄SrSi₂, whereas overheating causes incipient melting of the Al-Cu eutectic and hence the surrounding matrix. Both factors lead to a deterioration in the alloy mechanical properties. Furthermore, the presence of long, acicular Si particles accelerates the occurrence of fracture and, as a result, yields poor ductility. In low iron (less than 0.1 wt%) Al-Si-Mg alloys, the mechanical properties in the as cast, as well as heat treated conditions, are mainly controlled by the eutectic Si charatersitics. Increasing the iron content and, hence, the volume fraction of Fe-based intermetallics leads to a complex fracture mode.

Revealing heterogeneous nucleation of primary Si and eutectic Si by AlP in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys.

Project description:The heterogeneous nucleation of primary Si and eutectic Si can be attributed to the presence of AlP. Although P, in the form of AlP particles, is usually observed in the centre of primary Si, there is still a lack of detailed investigations on the distribution of P within primary Si and eutectic Si in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys at the atomic scale. Here, we report an atomic-scale experimental investigation on the distribution of P in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. P, in the form of AlP particles, was observed in the centre of primary Si. However, no significant amount of P was detected within primary Si, eutectic Si and the Al matrix. Instead, P was observed at the interface between the Al matrix and eutectic Si, strongly indicating that P, in the form of AlP particles (or AlP 'patch' dependent on the P concentration), may have nucleated on the surface of the Al matrix and thereby enhanced the heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si. The present investigation reveals some novel insights into heterogeneous nucleation of primary Si and eutectic Si by AlP in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys and can be used to further develop heterogeneous nucleation mechanisms based on adsorption.

The roles of Eu during the growth of eutectic Si in Al-Si alloys.

Project description:Controlling the growth of eutectic Si and thereby modifying the eutectic Si from flake-like to fibrous is a key factor in improving the properties of Al-Si alloys. To date, it is generally accepted that the impurity-induced twinning (IIT) mechanism and the twin plane re-entrant edge (TPRE) mechanism as well as poisoning of the TPRE mechanism are valid under certain conditions. However, IIT, TPRE or poisoning of the TPRE mechanism cannot be used to interpret all observations. Here, we report an atomic-scale experimental and theoretical investigation on the roles of Eu during the growth of eutectic Si in Al-Si alloys. Both experimental and theoretical investigations reveal three different roles: (i) the adsorption at the intersection of Si facets, inducing IIT mechanism, (ii) the adsorption at the twin plane re-entrant edge, inducing TPRE mechanism or poisoning of the TPRE mechanism, and (iii) the segregation ahead of the growing Si twins, inducing a solute entrainment within eutectic Si. This investigation not only demonstrates a direct experimental support to the well-accepted poisoning of the TPRE and IIT mechanisms, but also provides a full picture about the roles of Eu atoms during the growth of eutectic Si, including the solute entrainment within eutectic Si.

Microstructure and properties of additively manufactured Al-Ce-Mg alloys.

Project description:Additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys is largely dominated by a near-eutectic Al-Si compositions, which are highly weldable, but have mechanical properties that are not competitive with conventional wrought Al alloys. In addition, there is a need for new Al alloys with improved high temperature properties and thermal stability for applications in the automotive and aerospace fields. In this work, we considered laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of two alloys in the Al-Ce-Mg system, designed as near-eutectic (Al-11Ce-7Mg) and hyper-eutectic (Al-15Ce-9Mg) compositions with respect to the binary L → Al + Al11Ce eutectic reaction. The addition of magnesium is used to promote solid solution strengthening. A custom laser scan pattern was used to reduce the formation of keyhole porosity, which was caused by excessive vaporization due to the high vapor pressure of magnesium. The microstructure and tensile mechanical properties of the alloys were characterized in the as-fabricated condition and following hot isostatic pressing. The two alloys exhibit significant variations in solidification structure morphology. These variations in non-equilibrium solidification structure were rationalized using a combination of thermodynamic and thermal modeling. Both alloys showed higher yield strength than AM Al-10Si-Mg for temperatures up to 350 °C and better strength retention at elevated temperatures than additively manufactured Scalmaloy.

Enhancement of the Mechanical Properties in Al?Si?Cu?Fe?Mg Alloys with Various Processing Parameters.

Project description:In this research, various processing conditions were implemented to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys. The silicon content was varied from hypoeutectic (Si-10 wt.%) to eutectic (Si-12.6 wt.%) and hypereutectic (Si-14 wt.%) for the preparation of Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6 Mg (X = 10?14%) alloys using die casting. Subsequently, these alloys were hot-extruded with an optimum extrusion ratio (17:1) at 400 °C to match the output extruded bar to the compressor size. An analysis of the microstructural features along with a chemical compositional analysis were carried out using scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope. The SEM micrographs of the extruded samples displayed cracks in primary Si, and the intermetallic (?-Al?FeSi) phase was fragmented accordingly. In addition, the silicon phase was homogenously distributed, and the size remained constant. The mechanical properties of the extruded samples were enhanced by the increase of silicon content, and consequently the ductility decreased. By implementing proper T6 heat treatment parameters, coherent Al?Cu phases were formed in the Al matrix, and the Si phase was gradually increased along with the silicon content. Therefore, high tensile strength was achieved, reaching values for the Al-XSi-3Cu-0.5Fe-0.6Mg (X = 10?14%) alloys of 366 MPa, 388 MPa, and 420 MPa, respectively.
