Handwriting Moroccan regions recognition using Tifinagh character.

ABSTRACT: The territorial organization of Morocco during administratives division of 2009 is based on 16 regions. In this work we will create a system of recognition of handwritten words (names of regions) using the Amazigh language is an official language by the Moroccan Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) (2003a) [1] such as this language is slightly treated by researchers in pattern recognition field that is why we decided to study this language (El Kessab et al., 2013 [3]; El Kessab et al., 2014 [4]) that knowing the state make a decision to computerize the various public sectors by this language. In this context we propose a data set for handwritten Tifinagh regions composed of 1600 image (100 Image for each region). The dataset can be used in one hand to test the efficiency of the Tifinagh region recognition system in extraction of characteristics significatives and the correct identification of each region in classification phase in the other hand.

Project description:The Tifinagh alphabet-IRCAM is the official alphabet of the Amazigh language widely used in North Africa [1]. It includes thirty-one basic letter and two letters each composed of a base letter followed by the sign of labialization. Normalized only in 2003 (Unicode) [2], ICRAM-Tifinagh is a young character repertoire. Which needs more work on all levels. In this context we propose a data set for handwritten Tifinagh characters composed of 1376 image; 43 Image For Each character. The dataset can be used to train a Tifinagh character recognition system, or to extract the meaning characteristics of each character.

CBD2023: A Hypercomplex Bangla Handwriting Character Recognition Data for Hierarchical Class Expansion.

Project description:Object recognition technology has made significant strides, but recognizing handwritten Bangla characters (including symbols, compound forms, etc.) remains a challenging problem due to the prevalence of cursive writing and many ambiguous characters. The complexity and variability of the Bangla script and individual's unique handwriting styles make it difficult to achieve satisfactory performance for practical applications, and the best existing recognizers are far less effective than those developed for English alpha-numeric characters. Compared to other major languages, there are limited options for recognizing handwritten Bangla characters. This research has described a new dataset to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of handwriting recognition systems for the Bengali language spoken by over 200 million people worldwide. This dataset aims to investigate and recognize Bangla handwritten characters, focusing on enlarging the recognized character classes. To achieve this, a new challenging dataset for handwriting recognition is introduced, collected from numerous students' handwriting from two institutions.

Self-Powered Intelligent Human-Machine Interaction for Handwriting Recognition.

Project description:Handwritten signatures widely exist in our daily lives. The main challenge of signal recognition on handwriting is in the development of approaches to obtain information effectively. External mechanical signals can be easily detected by triboelectric nanogenerators which can provide immediate opportunities for building new types of active sensors capable of recording handwritten signals. In this work, we report an intelligent human-machine interaction interface based on a triboelectric nanogenerator. Using the horizontal-vertical symmetrical electrode array, the handwritten triboelectric signal can be recorded without external energy supply. Combined with supervised machine learning methods, it can successfully recognize handwritten English letters, Chinese characters, and Arabic numerals. The principal component analysis algorithm preprocesses the triboelectric signal data to reduce the complexity of the neural network in the machine learning process. Further, it can realize the anticounterfeiting recognition of writing habits by controlling the samples input to the neural network. The results show that the intelligent human-computer interaction interface has broad application prospects in signature security and human-computer interaction.

Effect of Handwriting on Visual Word Recognition in Chinese Bilingual Children and Adults.

Project description:In a digital era that neglects handwriting, the current study is significant because it examines the mechanisms underlying this process. We recruited 9- to 10-year-old Chinese children (n = 24), who were at an important period of handwriting development, and adult college students (n = 24), for both behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG) experiments. We designed four learning conditions: handwriting Chinese (HC), viewing Chinese (VC), drawing shapes followed by Chinese recognition (DC), and drawing shapes followed by English recognition (DE). Both behavioral and EEG results showed that HC facilitated visual word recognition compared to VC, and behavioral results showed that HC facilitated visual word recognition compared to drawing shapes. HC and VC resulted in a lateralization of the N170 in adults, but not in children. Taken together, the results of the study suggest benefits of handwriting on the neural processing and behavioral performance in response to Chinese characters. The study results argue for maintaining handwriting practices to promote the perception of visual word forms in the digital age.

Convolutional ensembles for Arabic Handwritten Character and Digit Recognition.

Project description:A learning algorithm is proposed for the task of Arabic Handwritten Character and Digit recognition. The architecture consists on an ensemble of different Convolutional Neural Networks. The proposed training algorithm uses a combination of adaptive gradient descent on the first epochs and regular stochastic gradient descent in the last epochs, to facilitate convergence. Different validation strategies are tested, namely Monte Carlo Cross-Validation and K-fold Cross Validation. Hyper-parameter tuning was done by using the MADbase digits dataset. State of the art validation and testing classification accuracies were achieved, with average values of 99.74% and 99.47% respectively. The same algorithm was then trained and tested with the AHCD character dataset, also yielding state of the art validation and testing classification accuracies: 98.60% and 98.42% respectively.

DarNERcorp: An annotated named entity recognition dataset in the Moroccan dialect.

Project description:DarNERcorp is a manually annotated named entity recognition (NER) dataset in the Moroccan dialect, also called Darija. The dataset consists of 65,905 tokens and their corresponding tags according to BIO scheme. 13.8% of the tokens are named entities spanning four categories: person, location, organization, and miscellaneous. The data were scraped from the Moroccan Dialect section of Wikipedia and processed and annotated using open-source libraries and tools. The data are useful for the Arabic natural language processing (NLP) community as they address the lack in dialectal Arabic annotated corpora. This dataset can be used to train and evaluate named entity recognition systems in dialectal and mixed Arabic.

Robust Combined Binarization Method of Non-Uniformly Illuminated Document Images for Alphanumerical Character Recognition.

Project description:Image binarization is one of the key operations decreasing the amount of information used in further analysis of image data, significantly influencing the final results. Although in some applications, where well illuminated images may be easily captured, ensuring a high contrast, even a simple global thresholding may be sufficient, there are some more challenging solutions, e.g., based on the analysis of natural images or assuming the presence of some quality degradations, such as in historical document images. Considering the variety of image binarization methods, as well as their different applications and types of images, one cannot expect a single universal thresholding method that would be the best solution for all images. Nevertheless, since one of the most common operations preceded by the binarization is the Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which may also be applied for non-uniformly illuminated images captured by camera sensors mounted in mobile phones, the development of even better binarization methods in view of the maximization of the OCR accuracy is still expected. Therefore, in this paper, the idea of the use of robust combined measures is presented, making it possible to bring together the advantages of various methods, including some recently proposed approaches based on entropy filtering and a multi-layered stack of regions. The experimental results, obtained for a dataset of 176 non-uniformly illuminated document images, referred to as the WEZUT OCR Dataset, confirm the validity and usefulness of the proposed approach, leading to a significant increase of the recognition accuracy.

Teachers' Perceptions of Handwriting Legibility Versus the German Systematic Screening for Motoric-Handwriting Difficulties (SEMS).

Project description:Handwriting problems impact school achievement. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the agreement between teachers' opinions and the German Systematische Erfassung motorischer Schreibstörungen's (SEMS) handwriting test and to estimate the prevalence of handwriting problems. This was a prospective, correlational study. Teachers' ratings of handwriting from German children (Grades 2 and 4) were compared to SEMS scores. The agreement was calculated with Gwet's AC2; preliminary cutoffs and prevalence were assessed with receiver-operating characteristic curves. SEMS accurately identified Grade 2 children with handwriting problems (specificity = 98.21%, sensitivity = 100%) but fewer Grade 4 children with handwriting difficulties than did teachers (specificity 97.67%, sensitivity 28.57%). Grade 4 item agreement supports the SEMS' ability to assess underlying handwriting dimensions as perceived by teachers. Teachers identified 12.70% of Grade 2 children versus SEMS 11.11% and 14% of Grade 4 children versus SEMS 6%. The SEMS supports clinical observations and provides information about underlying handwriting dimensions. Because handwriting is used primarily at school, the opinions of teachers are also critical.

Revealing ferroelectric switching character using deep recurrent neural networks.

Project description:The ability to manipulate domains underpins function in applications of ferroelectrics. While there have been demonstrations of controlled nanoscale manipulation of domain structures to drive emergent properties, such approaches lack an internal feedback loop required for automatic manipulation. Here, using a deep sequence-to-sequence autoencoder we automate the extraction of latent features of nanoscale ferroelectric switching from piezoresponse force spectroscopy of tensile-strained PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 with a hierarchical domain structure. We identify characteristic behavior in the piezoresponse and cantilever resonance hysteresis loops, which allows for the classification and quantification of nanoscale-switching mechanisms. Specifically, we identify elastic hardening events which are associated with the nucleation and growth of charged domain walls. This work demonstrates the efficacy of unsupervised neural networks in learning features of a material's physical response from nanoscale multichannel hyperspectral imagery and provides new capabilities in leveraging in operando spectroscopies that could enable the automated manipulation of nanoscale structures in materials.

The visual magnocellular-dorsal dysfunction in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia impedes Chinese character recognition.

Project description:The visual magnocellular-dorsal (M-D) deficit theory of developmental dyslexia (DD) is still highly debated. Many researchers have made great efforts to investigate the relationship between M-D dysfunction and reading disability. Given that visual analysis plays an important role in Chinese reading, the present study tried to examine how the M-D dysfunction affected Chinese character recognition in Chinese children with DD. Sixteen DD children with M-D deficit, fifteen DD children with normal M-D function and twenty-seven age-matched typically developing children participated in this study. A global/local decision task was adopted, in which we manipulated the spatial frequency of target characters to separate an M-D condition from an unfiltered condition. Results of reaction times and error rates showed that in the M-D condition both M-D normal dyslexics and controls exhibited a significant global precedence effect, with faster responses and lower error rates in global decision than in local decision. In contrast, this global advantage was absent for the M-D impaired dyslexics. Accordingly, we propose that the M-D impairment present in some but not all dyslexics might influence global recognition of Chinese characters in this subgroup of children with DD, which might be implicated in their difficulties in learning to read.
