In Situ FTIR Spectroscopic Monitoring of Electrochemically Controlled Organic Reactions in a Recycle Reactor.

ABSTRACT: An electrochemical cell coupled with a recycle loop through a transmission FTIR cell is employed in studies of two free radical organic reactions, the oxidation of allylic alcohols and the trifluoromethylation of heteroarenes. Rapid mixing through the recycle loop allows continuous monitoring of reaction progress. Electrochemical generation of free radicals allows their controlled mediation into the reaction mixture for more efficient reaction. Kinetic profiles provide mechanistic insight into reactions under electrochemical control.

In situ monitoring of photocatalyzed isomerization reactions on a microchip flow reactor by IR-MALDI ion mobility spectrometry.

Project description:The visible-light photocatalytic E/Z isomerization of olefins can be mediated by a wide spectrum of triplet sensitizers (photocatalysts). However, the search for the most efficient photocatalysts through screenings in photo batch reactors is material and time consuming. Capillary and microchip flow reactors can accelerate this screening process. Combined with a fast analytical technique for isomer differentiation, these reactors can enable high-throughput analyses. Ion mobility (IM) spectrometry is a cost-effective technique that allows simple isomer separation and detection on the millisecond timescale. This work introduces a hyphenation method consisting of a microchip reactor and an infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (IR-MALDI) ion mobility spectrometer that has the potential for high-throughput analysis. The photocatalyzed E/Z isomerization of ethyl-3-(pyridine-3-yl)but-2-enoate (E-1) as a model substrate was chosen to demonstrate the capability of this device. Classic organic triplet sensitizers as well as Ru-, Ir-, and Cu-based complexes were tested as catalysts. The ionization efficiency of the Z-isomer is much higher at atmospheric pressure which is due to a higher proton affinity. In order to suppress proton transfer reactions by limiting the number of collisions, an IM spectrometer working at reduced pressure (max. 100 mbar) was employed. This design reduced charge transfer reactions and allowed the quantitative determination of the reaction yield in real time. Among 14 catalysts tested, four catalysts could be determined as efficient sensitizers for the E/Z isomerization of ethyl cinnamate derivative E-1. Conversion rates of up to 80% were achieved in irradiation time sequences of 10 up to 180 s. With respect to current studies found in the literature, this reduces the acquisition times from several hours to only a few minutes per scan.

In Situ FTIR Spectroscopic Monitoring of the Formation of the Arene Diazonium Salts and its Applications to the Heck-Matsuda Reaction.

Project description:This study depicts the use of a fiber-optic coupled Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) probe for the in-depth study of arene diazonium salt formation and their utilization in the Heck-Matsuda reaction. The combination of these chemical reactions and in situ IR spectroscopy enabled us to recognize the optimum parameters for arene diazonium salt formation and to track the concentrations of reactants, products and intermediates under actual reaction conditions without time consuming HPLC analysis and the necessity of collecting the sample amid the reaction. Overall advantages of the proposed methodology include precise reaction times as well as identification of keto enol tautomerization in allylic alcohols supporting the 'path a' elimination mechanism in the Heck-Matsuda reaction.

In situ SERS monitoring of photochemistry within a nanojunction reactor.

Project description:We demonstrate a powerful SERS-nanoreactor concept composed of self-assembled gold nanoparticles (AuNP) linked by the sub-nm macrocycle cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]). The CB[n] functions simultaneously as a nanoscale reaction vessel, sequestering and templating a photoreaction within, and also as a powerful SERS-transducer through the large field enhancements generated within the nanojunctions that CB[n]s define. Through the enhanced Raman fingerprint, the real-time SERS-monitoring of a prototypical stilbene photoreaction is demonstrated. By choosing the appropriate CB[n] nanoreactor, selective photoisomerism or photodimerization is monitored in situ from within the AuNP-CB[n] nanogap.

Electrochemically Active In Situ Crystalline Lithium-Organic Thin Films by ALD/MLD.

Project description:Intercalated metal-organic framework (iMOF) type electrochemically active aromatic metal carboxylates are intriguing material candidates for various energy storage devices and microelectronics. In this work, we grow in situ crystalline thin films of such materials through atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD); the remarkable benefit of this approach is the possibility to evaluate their electrochemical properties in a simple cell configuration without any additives. Five organic linkers are investigated in combination with lithium: terephthalic acid (TPA), 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC), 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC), 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (BPDC), and 4,4'-azobenzenedicarboxylic acid (AZO). In particular, the electrochemical activity of Li-PDC and the crystal structure of Li-AZO are addressed here for the first time. We believe that the in situ gas-phase thin-film deposition is a crucial requirement to benefit from the iMOF-type electrode materials in, e.g., microelectronics and wearable devices.

Real-time spectroscopic monitoring of photocatalytic activity promoted by graphene in a microfluidic reactor.

Project description:Photocatalytic microreactors have been utilized as rapid, versatile platforms for the characterization of photocatalysts. In this work, a photocatalytic microreactor integrated with absorption spectroscopy was proposed for the real-time monitoring of photocatalytic activity using different catalysts. The validity of this method was investigated by the rapid screening on the photocatalytic performance of a titanium oxide (TiO2)-decorated graphene oxide (GO) sheet for the degradation of methylene blue under monochromatic visible irradiation. The sampling interval time could be minimized to 10?s for achieving real-time detection. The best photocatalytic activity was observed for an optimized TiO2/GO weight mixing ratio of 7:11, with a reaction rate constant up to 0.067?min(-1). The addition of GO into TiO2 enhances photocatalytic activity and adsorption of MB molecules. The synthetic reaction rate constant was up to approximately 0.11?min(-1), which was also the highest among the catalysts. The microreactor exhibited good sensitivity and reproducibility without weakening the performance of the photocatalysts. Consequently, the photocatalytic microreactor is promising as a simple, portable, and rapid screening tool for new photocatalysts.

In-Situ XPS Monitoring and Characterization of Electrochemically Prepared Au Nanoparticles in an Ionic Liquid.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been electrochemically prepared in situ and in vacuo using two different electrochemical device configurations, containing an ionic liquid (IL), N-N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, that serves both as reaction and as stabilizing media for the NPs. It was observed in both devices that Au NPs were created using an anodically triggered route. The created Au NPs are relatively small (3-7 nm) and reside within the IL medium. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is utilized to follow not only the formation of the NPs but also their charging/discharging properties, by monitoring the charging shifts of the Au4f peak representing the electrodes and also the Au NPs as well as the F1s peak of the IL after polarizing one of the electrodes. Accordingly, DC polarization across the electrodes leads to a uniform binding energy shift of F1s of the IL along with that of Au4f of the NPs within. Moreover, this shift corresponds to only half of the applied potential. AC polarization brings out another dimension for demonstrating further the harmony between the charging/discharging property of the IL medium and the Au NPs in temporally and laterally resolved fashions. Polarization of the electrodes result in perfect spectral separation of the Au4f peaks of the NPs from those of the metal in both static (DC) and in time- and position-dependent (AC) modes.

Novel Approaches to In-Situ ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy and Spectroscopic Imaging for Real-Time Simultaneous Monitoring Curing Reaction and Diffusion of the Curing Agent at Rubber Nanocomposite Surface.

Project description:Here, we propose a novel attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy method for simultaneously monitoring the curing reaction and the diffusion behavior of curing agents at the surface of rubber in real-time. The proposed scheme was demonstrated by fluorine rubber (FKM) and FKM/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites with a target curing agent of triallyl-isocyanurate (TAIC). The broadening and the evolution of the C=O stretching of TAIC were quantitatively analyzed to characterize the reaction and the diffusion. Changes in the width of the C=O stretching indicated the reaction rate at the surface was even faster than that of the bulk as measured by a curemeter. The diffusion coefficient of the curing agent in the course of heating was newly calculated by the initial increase in the absorbance and our model based on Fickian diffusion. The diffusion coefficients of TAIC during curing were evaluated, and its temperature and filler dependency were identified. Cross-sectional ATR-FTIR imaging and in situ ATR-FTIR imaging measurements supported the hypothesis of the unidirectional diffusion of the curing agent towards the heated surface. It was shown that our method of in situ ATR-FTIR can monitor the degrees of cure and the diffusion coefficients of curing agents simultaneously, which cannot be achieved by conventional methods, e.g., rheological measurements.

Electronic Tongue Coupled to an Electrochemical Flow Reactor for Emerging Organic Contaminants Real Time Monitoring.

Project description:Triclosan, which is a bacteriostatic used in household items, has raised health concerns, because it might lead to antimicrobial resistance and endocrine disorders in organisms. The detection, identification, and monitoring of triclosan and its by-products (methyl triclosan, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol) are a growing need in order to update current water treatments and enable the continuous supervision of the contamination plume. This work presents a customized electronic tongue prototype coupled to an electrochemical flow reactor, which aims to access the monitoring of triclosan and its derivative by-products in a real secondary effluent. An electronic tongue device, based on impedance measurements and polyethylenimine/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) layer-by-layer and TiO2, ZnO and TiO2/ZnO sputtering thin films, was developed and tested to track analyte degradation and allow for analyte detection and semi-quantification. A degradation pathway trend was observable by means of principal component analysis, being the sample separation, according to sampling time, explained by 77% the total variance in the first two components. A semi-quantitative electronic tongue was attained for triclosan and methyl-triclosan. For 2,4-Dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol, the best results were achieved with only a single sensor. Finally, working as multi-analyte quantification devices, the electronic tongues could provide information regarding the degradation kinetic and concentrations ranges in a dynamic removal treatment.

In Situ Monitoring of Aptamer-Protein Binding on a ZnO Surface Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry.

Project description:The dissolution of zinc oxide is investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate its suitability as a platform for biosensing applications. The results indicate that once the ZnO surface has been functionalised, it is suitably protected, and no significant dissolving of the ZnO occurs. The binding kinetics of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein on aptamer-functionalised zinc oxide surfaces are subsequently investigated. Values are extracted for the refractive index and associated optical constants for both the aptamer layer used and the protein itself. It is shown that upon an initial exposure to the protein, a rapid fluctuation in the surface density is observed. After around 20 min, this effect stabilises, and a fixed increase in the surface density is observed, which itself increases as the concentration of the protein is increased. This technique and setup are demonstrated to have a limit-of-detection down to 1 nanomole (nM) and display a linear response to concentrations up to 100 nM.

<i>In situ</i> Raman and FTIR spectroscopic study on the formation of the isomers MIL-68(Al) and MIL-53(Al).

Project description:The topological metal-organic framework isomers MIL-53 and MIL-68 form from similar educts but differ in their pore geometries. They have been known for several years, but their synthesis is always reported separately. In consequence, the underlying mechanism and decisive synthesis parameters leading to the formation of either MIL-53 or MIL-68 are not understood. The present study shows how to induce the formation of MIL-68(Al) rather than MIL-53(Al) at low synthesis temperatures in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) using a modulated synthesis approach. MIL-68(Al) is identified as the intermediate product of formic acid modulated synthesis, which converts into the thermodynamically stable MIL-53(Al) product at longer synthesis times. The interactions of formic acid with the synthesis precursors responsible for inducing MIL-68(Al) formation are investigated with in situ Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. In contrast to the commonly assumed modulation mechanism of competitive coordination of linker and modulator with the metal node, formic acid is shown to form hydrogen bonds via the carboxylic group of the terephthalic acid (H2BDC) linker, slowing prenucleation building unit and subsequent crystal growth. MIL-68(Al) formation is favored by the combination of a deficiency of terephthalic acid in solution and a slow MOF growth rate. Dissolved H2BDC in solution is proposed to hinder MIL-68(Al) formation by serving as a molecular template for the rhombic MIL-53(Al) pore channels.
