Survey data on household electricity consumption and living status in Northwestern China.

ABSTRACT: Based on 1128 survey questionnaires, main information on urban and rural household electricity consumption was obtained. Original data included household income, the price of electricity, all kinds of electrical appliances, purchase price of main appliances, household size, electricity consumption, as well as power, daily use time of electrical appliances in this data article. These data fully reflected behavior, preferences and living pattern of sample households in electricity use and provided the basis for analyzing the relationship between household electricity consumption and the quality of life ("Does electricity consumption improve residential living status in less developed regions? An empirical analysis using the quantile regression approach" [1]).

Project description:The IDEAL household energy dataset described here comprises electricity, gas and contextual data from 255 UK homes over a 23-month period ending in June 2018, with a mean participation duration of 286 days. Sensors gathered 1-second electricity data, pulse-level gas data, 12-second temperature, humidity and light data for each room, and 12-second temperature data from boiler pipes for central heating and hot water. 39 homes also included plug-level monitoring of selected electrical appliances, real-power measurement of mains electricity and key sub-circuits, and more detailed temperature monitoring of gas- and heat-using equipment, including radiators and taps. Survey data included occupant demographics, values, attitudes and self-reported energy awareness, household income, energy tariffs, and building, room and appliance characteristics. Linked secondary data comprises weather and level of urbanisation. The data is provided in comma-separated format with a custom-built API to facilitate usage, and has been cleaned and documented. The data has a wide range of applications, including investigating energy demand patterns and drivers, modelling building performance, and undertaking Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring research.

Household electricity consumption in Greece: A dataset based on socio-economic features.

Project description:The electricity consumption of a residence depends on many factors such as the habits and economical status of the occupants, the properties of the household and many more. To shed more light on the subject a data set for households was created. The data were collected in Greece through an anonymous survey that comprises 26 questions, resulting in 188 data points from 104 households from different time periods. Each data point contains attributes that are divided into four categories. In the first category, the information is about the household data such as the type and properties of the residence. Next, occupants' socio-economic features are gathered. In this category information for the number and type of the occupants, the employment status and the total income of the residents is included. The third category of attributes is about the energy-related occupants' behavior. Finally, the location of the household was provided from the users to estimate the weather conditions for the provided time. Data augmentation was performed to discover non-trivial relationships between the data points. Thus, a secondary set of features was computed based on the raw attributes and is also included. The provided data set can be used to extract insights that could be valuable during the imminent energy crisis.

Electricity consumption data of a student residence in Southern Africa.

Project description:The time-series dataset presented in this article was captured using a real-time energy monitoring device from a distribution panel of a student residence in Johannesburg, South Africa. The data was captured from April 2016 to January 2018. The data from the three conductors supplying the student residence with electricity was automatically aggregated and presented as a single data point. The granularity was at resolution levels of watt-minute and kilowatt-hour. A total of 13,966 hrs of data points was captured. The data has not been processed further. Hence, data consists of 1,209-hour of missing data points. In addition to the energy consumption data, 16 months of hourly data for wind speed, temperature and humidity of the closest weather station has been provided. The data will be useful in the formulation of mathematical models of electricity consumption that is most suitable for a student residence. Furthermore, the data provided in this article will encourage the development of a data-driven electricity consumption management strategy and policy formulation for student residences.

Mortgage payments and household consumption in urban China.

Project description:By exploiting variation both in mortgage payoffs and mortgage interest-rate resets, we find that a decline in mortgage payments induces a significant increase in nondurable goods spending, even when households have substantial amounts of liquidity. Following mortgage payoff, households increase consumption expenditures by 61% of the original payment. In comparison, households increase consumption by only 36% in response to a transitory payment adjustment induced by interest rate changes. Households with a higher payment-to-income ratio have a significantly lower marginal propensity to consume (MPC). These results have practical implications for policy markers seeking to design consumption boosting policies and are important for understanding how changes in monetary policy may affect consumer spending patterns.

Monthly electricity consumption data at 1 km × 1 km grid for 280 cities in China from 2012 to 2019.

Project description:High spatio-temporal resolution estimates of electricity consumption are essential for formulating effective energy transition strategies. However, the data availability is limited by complex spatio-temporal heterogeneity and insufficient multi-source feature fusion. To address these issues, this study introduces an innovative downscaling method that combines multi-source data with machine learning and spatial interpolation techniques. The method's accuracy showed significant improvements, with determination coefficients (R2) increasing by 30.1% and 33.4% over the baseline model in two evaluation datasets. With this advanced model, we estimated monthly electricity consumption across 1 km x 1 km grid for 280 Chinese cities from 2012 to 2019. Our dataset is highly consistent with officially released electricity consumption of different industries (Pearson correlation coefficients within 0.83 - 0.91). Moreover, our data can reflect the electricity consumption patterns of different urban land uses compared to other datasets. This study bridges a significant gap in fine-grained electricity consumption data, providing a robust foundation for the development of sustainable energy policies.

Climate change and residential electricity consumption in the Yangtze River Delta, China.

Project description:Estimating the impact of climate change on energy use across the globe is essential for analysis of both mitigation and adaptation policies. Yet existing empirical estimates are concentrated in Western countries, especially the United States. We use daily data on household electricity consumption to estimate how electricity consumption would change in Shanghai in the context of climate change. For colder days <7 °C, a 1 °C increase in daily temperature reduces electricity consumption by 2.8%. On warm days >25 °C, a 1 °C increase in daily temperatures leads to a 14.5% increase in electricity consumption. As income increases, households' weather sensitivity remains the same for hotter days in the summer but increases during the winter. We use this estimated behavior in conjunction with a collection of downscaled global climate models (GCMs) to construct a relationship between future annual global mean surface temperature (GMST) changes and annual residential electricity consumption. We find that annual electricity consumption increases by 9.2% per +1 °C in annual GMST. In comparison, annual peak electricity use increases by as much as 36.1% per +1 °C in annual GMST. Although most accurate for Shanghai, our findings could be most credibly extended to the urban areas in the Yangtze River Delta, covering roughly one-fifth of China's urban population and one-fourth of the gross domestic product.

Data-driven load profiles and the dynamics of residential electricity consumption.

Project description:The dynamics of power consumption constitutes an essential building block for planning and operating sustainable energy systems. Whereas variations in the dynamics of renewable energy generation are reasonably well studied, a deeper understanding of the variations in consumption dynamics is still missing. Here, we analyse highly resolved residential electricity consumption data of Austrian, German and UK households and propose a generally applicable data-driven load model. Specifically, we disentangle the average demand profiles from the demand fluctuations based purely on time series data. We introduce a stochastic model to quantitatively capture the highly intermittent demand fluctuations. Thereby, we offer a better understanding of demand dynamics, in particular its fluctuations, and provide general tools for disentangling mean demand and fluctuations for any given system, going beyond the standard load profile (SLP). Our insights on the demand dynamics may support planning and operating future-compliant (micro) grids in maintaining supply-demand balance.

Exploring energy geography: Data insights on household consumption.

Project description:Household energy consumption (HEC) varies across neighbourhoods and gender groups. This database provides raw and analysed data on HEC determinants and their estimated influence on HEC in 2707 residential neighbourhoods (Wijk) in the Netherlands in 2018. The raw data consists of 17 indicators on energy demand, socioeconomic characteristics, microclimate and buildings. The indicators are retrieved from and calculated based on open national and international datasets. The analysed data presents the local coefficients of the HEC determinants, the outcome of the geographically weighted regression model (GWR) presented in the related article [1].

Data for electricity consumption, thermo-physical characteristics of residential buildings in Tehran.

Project description:This data article presents data related to 100 residential units in Tehran, Iran. For each building the ``average monthly electricity consumption'' data for 190 months has been provided. In addition, some physical characteristics of each building are given in the dataset. Presented data includes collected electricity end-users in residential units as well as thermos-physical characteristics of the buildings through a structured questionnaire. The physical characteristics covered in this study include; the number of floors, morphology of the yard and the ratio of the windows on each side window material, area, floor number of the studied residential unit, location in the city, cooling system, heating system, and so on. Information provided in this data article can be useful for research on energy prediction studies and also energy management strategies, and policy making to achieve sustainability targets. Having few datasets published on this topic, especially in hot and arid geographic regions, authors believe that the result of this data study can be generalized to the larger region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The data consists of two parts; 1. Physical specifications of the building and 2. History of electricity consumption.

Data on food insufficiency status in South Africa: Insight from the South Africa General Household Survey.

Project description:Food insecurity or insufficiency, among other factors, is triggered by structural inequalities. Food insecurity is an inflexible problematic situation in South Africa. The country has a custom of evidence-based decision making, stocked in the findings of generalized national household surveys. Conversely, the deep insights from the heterogeneity of the sub-national analysis remain a principally unexploited means of understanding of the contextual experience of food insecurity or insufficiency in South Africa. The data present the food insufficiency status with special focus on adult and children. The data also reveal the adult and children food insufficiency status across the provinces in South Africa. The data contains socioeconomic and demographic characteristics as well the living condition and food security status of the households.
